We gather here today to celebrate the life of Tommy, a beautiful soul who left us too soon but has left a profound impact on all our lives. As his older sister, I would like to share my memories of Tommy with you, so that we may remember the exceptional person he was and the love that flowed between us.
When Tommy and I were young, we fought all the time, as siblings often do. I was the older and "too-cool" sister, while Tommy was the little brother, obsessed with video games and joking about things like farts. It might not have seemed like it at the time, but these playful moments are now cherished memories that I hold close to my heart.
As we grew older, our relationship changed dramatically, and my role as an older sister took on a deeper meaning when Tommy became a teenager. We started to really love and hang out, laughing together and engaging in deep, meaningful conversations. To my surprise, I found myself looking to Tommy for wisdom, patience, and guidance on how to forgive, how to calm down, and how to breathe. Tommy had those qualities within him that allowed us both to grow into better human beings together.
We explored our spirituality together; gifting each other books about our relationship with God and questioning whether the religious examples we grew up with truly reflected who we were. Through this journey, we strived to practice love, a bond that only strengthened between us.
I cannot begin to describe how grateful I am for every moment I shared with Tommy. To say "thankful" does not do justice to the love and appreciation I have for the brother who helped shape who I am today. Perhaps there is no perfect word, but in my heart, there is a never-ending depth of love for Tommy.
Today, as we remember my dear brother, I am reminded of the song by Mariah Carey, "One Sweet Day," which speaks to the pain of losing someone so close, yet carries the hope of seeing them again one day. One of the lyrics goes: "And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven. Like so many friends we've lost along the way. And I know eventually we'll be together. One sweet day."
Tommy's passing has taken a part of me that I never imagined could hurt so much. But I trust in my God, which brings a sense of peace. His love and light will forever be a shining beacon in our lives until we meet again.
In closing, I encourage each of you to cherish the memories of Tommy, the laughter, the love, and the wisdom he brought to us all. Though he may have departed from this Earth, his spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. In that sense, Tommy is and always will be, with us.
