Luis Guel - August 25, 1930 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Sunnyvale)
Obituary Preview: Peacefully with his loved ones at his home bedside, Luis now rejoices with our Lord in heaven. He joins his beloved wife of 54 years Alicia “Licha” Ceja Guel (1929-2003), his two sons Jesse Manuel (1952-2024) and Juan Raul (1953-2024) and son-in-law, Ruben Gonzalez (1953-2022).
Luis was born in Laramie, Wyoming the son of Mexican migrant parents, Pablo Guel (1902-1980) and Maria del Carmen Corrales de Guel (1910-1992). He was the baby brother of Ana Vinaja and Juan Raul. His sister Rita died before his birth. He was the older brother of Leonardo, Juanita, Hilario “Larry”, Felix, Pablo, Elvia Lares, Alejo “Alex”, Marcelino “Marce”, and Vicente “Vince”.
The Guel family migrated back to San Luis Potosi, Mexico when Luis was 5 years old. He felt a great obligation at a very early age and throughout his youth to care for his siblings and he did anything he could for their livelihood. Luis and his brothers worked odd jobs in the small towns and villages along the Pan-American Highway as his father worked on the highway. Luis convinced his parents to eventually settle in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico for greater opportunities; one of which was meeting his beloved wife several years later at a community dance. As a couple Luis and Licha would be known for their elegant unison on the dance floor to all types of music.
At age 14, Luis moved to the Sacramento and San Francisco areas to find work to help support his family. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17 with his parents' consent so that he could have a steady income for the family. Luis and Licha married on October 9, 1949 and he was deployed to Korea shortly afterwards in 1950. Despite not speaking fluent English at the time, he served in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit and was the recipient of five Bronze stars equivalent to a silver star and was bestowed the Korean War Veterans Memorial Medal for Thanks and Honor by former Congressman Mike Honda in 2016. This commemorative medal was specially crafted with a piece of rusty barbed wire from the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The San Jose GI Forum recognized his service and he was celebrated in Veteran’s Day parades.
Eventually they moved to the Bay Area and lived in East Menlo Park before settling in Sunnyvale. There they purchased a home to which Luis himself built an addition with large family spaces for his growing family and many family members staying with them for various periods of time. Luis was proud of his home which was adorned with his passion for architecture and Mexican-influenced tiles, ceramics, arches, walkways, rose gardens, bougainvillea and jacaranda trees and fragrant gardenias at the entrance door.
Home ownership was a significant accomplishment for Luis who had just a 3rd grade education. He built his home with hard work and with never-ending love and commitment to his wife and his 8 beautiful children. His love and work ethic made him a role model for many. Luis retired as a Lab Technician from Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto with 35 years of service. Throughout his life he assisted many family members with purchasing their own homes.
Luis was a creative and self-taught artist and collector of numerous cultural artifacts, pottery, costumes (sewn by his wife) and religious images which were prominently and proudly displayed throughout his home. Luis’ love for his cultural heritage inspired his family and friends and many others to take pride in their cultural roots and language. He was a self-taught scholar of the Aztec calendar and he authored and published the book Sun of the Stone in 2004. He was earnest in learning many words in the Nahuatl language. Luis is remembered by many for his passionate lectures on the history and significant elements of the Aztec calendar which he gave throughout the Bay Area community, at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and at restorative justice programs in state prisons. Luis hand-carved a monumental and accurate reproduction of the Aztec calendar comprising 158 separate wooden pieces weighing over 400 pounds that has been on exhibition at the Mayfair Community Center in East San Jose since 2018. He was awarded commendations from City officials and the California State Assembly for his research and community work.
Luis taught ballet folklórico to his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and neighborhood children. He established the Ballet Folklórico de Luis Guel that performed in local parades, in festivals and dance halls. His passion for Chinese cuisine led to him mastering his own version of Chinese chicken salad. Tao Tao was his go to place for weekly lunches, birthdays or other family celebrations. He also mastered a family reunion favorite of Luis y Licha’s tacos. Luis was a proud member of the St. Victor’s Guadalupe Society and Club Estrella.
The Luis Guel Family was honored as Familia of the Year in 2018 by the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley.
Luis’ legacy will live on. He is survived by his eldest son Jose Luis “Joe”; daughters Rosa Gonzalez, Maria Guadalupe “Lupe”, Carlota Angelita “Angel” Moncallo, Alicia Del Carmen and Ana Luisa; daughter-in-laws Gloria, Michele, Ernestina; son-in-law Abel Moncallo; 26 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren with 2 expected, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Frank Thomas Dirksen - October 12, 1943 - February 13, 2024

Departed: 02/13/2024 (Sunnyvale)
Obituary Preview: Frank Thomas Dirksen understood God’s love and dedicated his life to serving others. He loved God and the Blessed Mother with all his heart and showed this love through his words and good works. Frank was born in San Jose on October 12, 1943 and was surrounded by loved ones when he left for his heavenly home on February 13, 2024. Lovingly known as Uncle Frank by hundreds of kids and kids-at-heart, he left an impact on everyone he met, reminding us always to care for the weak, to give to the needy, to have Faith, to accept God’s will, and to not judge others.
Frank attended Saint Francis High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business from Santa Clara University in 1966. From 1967 to 1969 he served in the U.S. Army, handling classified materials for the commander at CINCUSAEREUR in Germany. During this time he organized athletic programs for the company team and children of the soldiers. After leaving the army, he structured his life so he could spend his time serving others. He worked nights as a security guard, so he could focus on giving to others during the day. He drove seniors to church on Sundays, made daily visits to nursing homes (always with fresh fruit to give to the residents), and coached hundreds of youngsters in basketball. Frank always focused on making others happy and feel cared for.
Basketball was his passion. He felt that sharing his love and knowledge of basketball with youth was also sharing in God’s love. Frank directed the athletic program at Saint Lawrence School and was the school's head basketball coach. He coached the famous PeeWee basketball team that played during half-times at Wilcox High School, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University and University of the Pacific. After each game he would pile all 15 kids into his Barracuda and reward them with a meal at McDonald’s. Frank also directed a variety of programs and coached many other basketball teams, including Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Santa Clara, Wilcox H.S., Los Altos H.S., Hayward H.S., Lynbrook H.S., Irvington H.S., Lincoln H.S., Anzar H.S., Santa Clara H.S., and Chabot College. After he retired from coaching, he officiated thousands of games. His favorite game to referee was the Revs vs. Sems, with priests facing off against seminarians at Santa Clara University, even though he was often required to call fouls on his favorite priests.
Frank never focused on material possessions, but wanted to be remembered as a faithful person. He was remarkable and will be missed tremendously. May you now enjoy God’s Loving Care.
Frank is preceded in death by his loving parents, Charles and Rita Dirksen, brother Charles Dirksen, Jr., and sisters Mary Lou and Mary Rita Dirksen. He is survived by brothers Victor Dirksen and wife Jeannie and Tony Dirksen and wife Elva, cousin Sister Francis Mary, O.P., and 9 nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 10:30 AM with a Rosary beginning at 10:00 AM at SAINT LAWRENCE THE MARTYR CATHOLIC PARISH, 1971 St. Lawrence Drive, Santa Clara 95051. A reception will follow at the Saint Lawrence Community Center.
