Marcus E. Helms - August 18, 1983 - October 02, 2022

Departed: 10/02/2022 (Berne)
Obituary Preview: Marcus Helms, a long-time resident of Berne, IN, passed away unexpectedly on October 2, 2022 at the age of 39 while at his home in Ft. Wayne, IN.
Marcus is survived by his father, Kirk Potts; his children, Hannah Helms (Chelsea Tackett), and Aaliyah Feaster (Tad and Megan Feaster); his siblings, Randy Potts, Rachel (Lee) Hoeppner, Maranda (Austin) Cincotta, Kyla (Sam) Dellinger, Kassy (Josh) Zurcher, Jody (Jake) VanArsdalen, Jennifer (Caleb) Wurster, Brittany and Breanna Potts; as well as 15 nieces and nephews. His mother, Joyce (Helms) Potts, precedes him in death.
Marcus was born on August 18, 1983 to Joyce Helms and Robert Martin (Ft. Wayne resident), in Ft. Wayne, IN. Marcus wasn’t an only child for long; Joyce married Kirk in August of 1986, and from 1987 – 1999 he would have a brother and eight sisters to love and to tease.
Charismatic, fun loving, goofy, crazy, brave, and always trying to make those around him laugh—Marcus made friends everywhere he went. Finding success in a variety of trades, he was quick to make an impression and learn new skills; at the time of his passing, he was a member of the United Steelworkers and employed by Dana Incorporated in Ft. Wayne. Active outdoors, he was the first in a long line of siblings to take their first jobs at Pine Lake—it became somewhat a tradition and rite of passage. Watching his feats from the highest platform—he coaxed at least a couple others into trying new and exhilarating stunts. Over 20 years later, to the delight of his many nieces and nephews, he was showing off that he still had it! A childhood story was shared of Marcus catching a large snake and bringing it into the house to scare his sister. In another, just a few months ago he caught a salamander, put it in his nephew’s boot, and dumped it at his feet. There is a theme that very well sums up his audacious and mischievous nature—his commitment to being a big kid at heart, to live life to the fullest, and a reminder that there’s plenty of joy to be had in the little things (like scaring kids)!
A fierce protector of those he loved, Marcus leaves behind a family who mourns, but who also rejoice in his reunion with their beloved mother and grandmother, Joyce. To see him beam with pride and admiration at the young women his daughters have grown to be, was to witness the purest joy; Hannah and Aaliyah provided Marcus a constant light. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
