Maj Adele Carrigan - May 30, 1939 - January 29, 2024

Departed: 01/29/2024 (Navarre)
Obituary Preview: Maj Adele Carrigan, 84, of Navarre, FL, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, breaking her free from the long years of confusion while living in advanced stages of dementia that took her memory but not the love in her heart.
Maj was born May 30, 1939, to parents Enio and Valborg Lindberg on the island of Forby, Finland. She had one brother, Kaj, that became her best friend for life. As children, they witnessed war and their family caring for Russian POW(s) held on the island; one being a vet saved her dog’s life from a severe injury. From family and the POW(s) Maj learned to speak Finnish, Swedish, Russian, and English languages fluently that later contributed to her embassy career. Advantages of growing up by the Baltic Sea, Maj became a completive long-distance swimmer and was known to be the strongest female swimmer fearlessly diving from high places into the sea.
At the age of 15, Maj moved to Stockholm, Sweden and a year later enrolled in nursing school where she met her lifelong best friend. While in school she became a nanny for the family of the Iceland’s Ambassador to Sweden and learned to speak Icelandic fluently as well. Upon completing nursing school, she moved to Iceland to become the Ambassador’s private nurse. During one of the local dances, she was swept off her feet by Herman Martin that attended the dance as a Swedish consulate liaison. On April 30, 1961, they were married and later had their first son, David. The US Air Force led the family to the United States where they had their second son, Robert, born in Abilene, Texas. Due to the Vietnam war, the family moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky to live with Herman’s mother and thereafter their daughter, Diane, was born. In 1974, Maj and the children returned to Abilene, Texas where Maj began her new chapter as a single mom. She quickly became best friends with her neighbors that remained close and dear to her heart for all her remaining years.
Maj graduated from another nursing school with honors balancing many small jobs and caring for 3 children. One job included serving at the Petroleum Club where she met Tom Carrigan that would become her husband. There she also met a wealthy woman that that offered her a career to manage her mansion, which she did for 20 years.
Maj and Tom Carrigan were married on August 23, 1984, in Senatobia, Mississippi, where they only spent one year and then returned to Abilene, Texas. Maj traveled back and forth over the years to Finland and Sweden to connect with her loving family and best friend.
Being a single mom, Maj took on a second job that brought her to the Dos Amigos restaurant that would become her extended family. Every person that Maj served, or worked alongside with, was touched by her smile, Finnish accent, wit, and genuine caring heart. All of the staff at Dos Amigos knew Maj as the “Heart of Dos”. She retired from Dos Amigos after 31 years of her loving and devoted service but remained very close to her Dos extended family.
In 2011, Maj moved to Navarre, Florida to join her daughter’s family along with her rescued cat “Pooch”. Maj spent several years enduring assisted living activities as well as enjoying the family gatherings until she became disabled and progressed to advanced memory loss. The assisted living staff loved to call her May-May and were always bewildered when she spoke Swedish, but they quickly learned that she always spoke with love in all languages. Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32, “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Martin; husband, Tom Carrigan; son, David Martin; and brother, Kaj Lindberg.
Maj is survived by her daughter and husband, Diane and Dale Borgsteede; son and wife, Robert and Dee Martin; her grandchildren; and her great-grandchildren, all which she loved deeply.
Maj loved all animals and would go to great lengths to give any animal a second chance. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Everett Animal Welfare Group to assist in carrying on the rescue heart that Maj held so they can afford to save more. When doing so, please add a special note in memory of Maj. Donate to Everett Animal Welfare Group. everettanimalwelfare.rescuegroups.org/info/donate
If you knew Maj, or your heart was touched by her, then you know today that you have a new angel.
