Joyce Lee Rogers - July 02, 1942 - May 19, 2024

Departed: 05/19/2024 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Lee Rogers was born on July 2, 1942, in Virgin Beach, Virginia. She is the daughter of Frank and Mildred Bangley who have preceded her in death. She also has a younger sister, Patricia, who resides in North Carolina.
Joyce married a Navy Sailor, Russell Edward Rogers in 1964. It did not take them long to start building a family. Edward was born in 1965, Brian a year later in 1966, Russell born 1970, and Scott in 1972. With a husband who was constantly out to sea, her life revolved around these children. As a Navy Wife, Joyce lived in Florida, California, New Jersey, Virginia, and Japan. She travelled all over the Far East, including the Philippines, Korea, and Hong Kong. Regardless of where she was and where she went, her message to her children and friends was always the same… family first. Her other love was animals. At her death, she had 2 dogs, over a dozen cats that lived in and outside the house. She fed deer, squirrels, possums, raccoons, various birds, and any other critters around the house that may want a meal. Over the years, she had many pet animals, including even ducks and rabbits.
Joyce was a nurturing human being. She was always the team mom on her children’s sports teams, providing drinks and food for all the kids. If any of the kids needed anything, they knew they could come to “Mrs. Rogers” and she would provide. As I write this Obituary, many of my and my brother’s past friends have called to tell me she was their “second mom”. Joyce Rogers was selfless. She never spent money on herself; in her mind, there was always someone else that needed it more. Her life was not without tragedy however, in 1984 her youngest son Scott died in an accident at the age of 12. Forty years later, she will be buried with Scott at Barrancas National Cemetery. Joyce Rogers even in death is the Matriarch of the Rogers Family. With her husband of 60 years, they have 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 more great grandchildren soon to be born. Joyce Rogers has left an eternal mark on this earth. Countless generations of the Rogers Family will go on thanks to deeds and the example that set forth by the way she lived her life.
I can speak for my brothers and my father when I say that we have not only lost a mother, our protector, our biggest fan, but we have lost our best friend. A Committal Service will be held on Tuesday May 21, 2024, at Barrancas National Service, 1 Cemetery Road Pensacola, Florida 32508. The Procession will meet no later than 12:30pm at Olive Baptist Church-Warrington Campus, 103 West Winthrop Avenue Pensacola, Florida 32507

Janet Clements Amos - May 31, 1932 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: A brilliant, bold, and talented teacher died on April 24, 2024. Janet Sharlene Clements Amos, who would have turned 92 years old this May 31st, was also a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born on Sand Mountain in Tenbroek, Alabama, to Marvin Andrew Clements and Eva Ree Brittain Clements. Eva died from an appendectomy shortly after her daughter’s birth, and when Janet was four, Marvin married Mary Vora Hulgan. Soon Janet was blessed with sisters, Rita, and Linda.
Like her new husband, Marvin, Vora earned a college degree and worked full time even though such accomplishments represented a significant deviation from the norm for women in the nineteen thirties. Vora taught elementary school at Williams School, where Marvin was principal, coached basketball, and instructed grades 7-9 math and science. As a student there, Janet stayed active in the Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and the 4-H Chapter. In ninth grade, her superior sewing skills (she made an original dress suit with piping!) earned her a trip to Montgomery and garnered her a state title. Janet not only loved to sew, but also to type, do math, write, and organize.
Upon completion of high school, Janet attended Jacksonville State University (JSU). The same day as her college graduation, she married JSU alum Richard “Dick” Samuel Amos, Jr. After fighting in and returning from World War II, Dick went to work for Boy Scouts of America, Inc. One winter day, as he met with scout leader Marvin Clements at the latter’s church in the Williams Community, a lady hanging Christmas directions caught his eye. So smitten was he that, even after ascertaining that the young woman who had captivated him was scout leader Clements’s own eldest daughter, Dick pledged he would someday make her his wife.
Once Janet had finished her own degree and made ecstatic Dick’s pledge a reality, the couple began their teaching careers. Their inaugural positions occurred at West Point High School (Alabama, 1953-1955), followed by Crestview High School, (Florida 1955-1956), and finally and happily at Milton High School (MHS, Florida 1956-1983). The new husband and wife also entered master’s programs at Auburn University. According to Janet, Auburn’s motto, “Research, Instruction, Extension,” was especially meaningful for the young couple. If Auburn had not brought extension classes closer to Florida, Dick and she would not have completed their graduate degrees. The Amos’s had relocated to Dick’s hometown of Milton in 1955 to be closer to his father and mother.
At Milton, Dick taught psychology and history and later became the school’s guidance director. Janet’s specialties were vocational office education, business English, shorthand, finance, accounting, and economics. Evenings, she taught at Pensacola State College (formerly Pensacola Junior College). Janet always said that if a person chose to become a teacher, that person “had better have two jobs.” Dick sponsored the Student Council (SGA), and Janet sponsored the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). She was grateful for the opportunity she and her daughter, Anthea, were given by Milton High to be Grand Marshals of the 2021-2022 Milton High School Homecoming Parade in which she carried Dick’s 1940 & #39’s MHS sweater (original orange and black school colors).
Neither time nor death will remove the memory that students have of Janet C. Amos’s vivacious, precise, and exacting - but caring - nature. She was an engaging, profound writer, who loved her students and left an urgency with them to strive for greatness no matter what vocation they chose. “You endeavor to make your boss (and organization) look better to others,” she would say. “No less than the best is acceptable.” This applied to how she taught. For example, early in her career when she learned the county had chosen an inferior (cheaper) brand of typewriters for the high school business courses in Santa Rosa, Janet went to see the principal and then the Superintendent with one of the purchased machines and a Royal Typewriter, the better choice. She proceeded to type as she spoke to each gentleman and showed them the exact mechanisms that would break under continued use from students and the almost flawless print created by the Royal Typewriter’s strikes. She even had each gentleman type on the two machines. As expected, Royal Typewriters were purchased for Milton High. “We are not typing for the future grade or a job; these students are the future. One day everyone will be typing, not just writing. If other schools have the best, we must do all we can to supply the students with the same.” In Vocational Office Education (VOE), Janet taught “her brilliant ladies” leadership and business. (Yes, her students were all female in the VOE classes, and she would often comment that it should be required for males since they needed to learn leadership, finance, and typing, too). She said that a boss was only as good as his or her secretary, since “it was a partnership”; whether anyone at the time wanted to admit this or not. In their role of assisting a boss, these ladies had to know the best practices and to continuously do more than was expected. “Don’t just do your job, learn the part of the leader, look the part, too; one day you may be the boss and, yes, I expect all of you to be in charge one day.”
While at Milton High, no lengths were too challenging to try to earn the funds for members of her FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America Organization) to travel to conferences and competitions including State and Nationals---she had students at both. From a small window in the brick wall on the northwest hallway of MHS, students sold school supplies each morning. During Homecoming, these same students sold yellow mums decorated with a bold, black M made from pipe cleaners and tied with black and gold glittered ribbons. Students from Dick and Janet’s first day teaching in the 50s until her last have written, called, and texted weekly. Some people, like Janet Amos, have this kind of impact on the world.
Janet was a woman of startling charm, endearing charisma, and diverse talents from cooking and sewing to hunting and fishing. She was a voracious reader, typically reading three books simultaneously. She kept them beside her chair, on her nightstand, in her handbag, and under the front seat of the car. Anytime we went to doctors’ appointments or to watch grandchildren/great-grandchildren in sports, plays, or concerts, she would say get your book, “You do not know how long the wait may be.” She was a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs: Milton Woman’s Club Chapter and Alpha Delta Kappa (Delta Chi Chapter), International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, First United Methodist Church, and the Santa Rosa County Retired Educators Association.
It would be tough to find another person who wanted to live and had more on her to do list than Janet did at age 91. Two years ago, Janet accidentally choked on a vitamin which led to resuscitation three times. While on a vent, she would write messages. When the hospitalist in ICU said this was too stressful and took the markers and poster board away, Janet began to use a finger to doodle in her surviving daughter Anthea’s hand. It took seconds for Anthea to recognize the shorthand so many students and she had learned from the gifted educator. Mother and daughter continued this method of communication until the erring physician was replaced. Janet was alert, clear, determined, and positive -- making herself understood – until the end. Surviving family have speculated that Janet probably entered Heaven with a to-do list both for herself and others.
Janet Clements Amos loved her family. She said she wanted them to know that no matter what, she fought for every moment she had with them and was never ever going to give up; she was not going “gentle into that good night.” Even after she was told several times over the years that “no hope” existed and she would die within days---she kept fighting and lived years longer to see her sister’s grandchildren marry and have great-grandchildren, to take her own great-grandchildren on trips, to see several graduate, perform in recitals, concerts, and competitions, to cook for them, sew for them, to hike part of the Appalachian Trail and mine for garnets and sapphires in Franklin, NC and gold in Dahlonega, GA and to love them. She always believed there was more to do, to learn, to live for. As a child, she looked forward particularly to spending summers in Davenport, Florida, and time on Sand Mountain with her sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and as an adult, she loved to go to Jacksonville, Alabama, to visit her parents, sisters, and their families. Dick and she loved to take their two daughters travelling, camping, fishing, and hunting. Her genius and kindness will continue to yield enviable memories of how much she valued life and what her presence and wisdom brought to the lives and souls of her students, friends, and family.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Dr. Anthea Estelle Amos; her grandchildren, John Paul Hendrix II (Kentucky) and Brittain (Curtis) Estelle Metzler; great-grandchildren, Breeana, Tyler, Julie, Kyra Janet, and Brenton Metzler; sisters, Linda (David) Hedgepath, Sr. (Alabama) and Rita Reaves (Alabama); nieces, nephews, and cousins, Linda Cale (Alabama), Jerry (Carolyn) Lang and Ashley, John and Lindsey Lang (Pensacola), John (Kay) Lang (Ocean Springs), William and Jennifer Lang (Memphis), Lorri (Jerome) Gray (Alabama), Matthew (Catherine) and Adalyn Gray, Zackrey Gray and Dr. John Parks, Lynn (Steve) Shafer (Georgia), Knox and Andrea Newell, Julianna Newell, David (Tara) Hedgepath, Jr. (Alabama), Abby (Kyle) Black, Maggie Hedgepath, Jeff (Becky) Reaves and Ashley (Alabama), Haley (Zackery) Sims and Everly Kate and Walker Clyde, Margaret Ann Larkin (Massachusetts), Barbara Jean Hudson (California), Dale Cowart, Larry (Sue) Clements, Charles (Sharon) Clements, Coralu Clements, and Gary (Debbie) Clements.
