Carl H. Rosner - April 04, 1929 - April 16, 2022

Departed: 04/16/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: An arc of bright light began in Hamburg, Germany on Saturday April 4th, 1929, and ended in Schenectady NY on April 16th, 2022, also a Saturday. Despite (and also because of) having survived some of the most horrific episodes of World War II, Carl H. Rosner was a fierce optimist with an enduring commitment to living with purpose and meaning.   During an especially tumultuous period of history, Carl H. Rosner spent several childhood years in an orphanage and endured one year as a teenager in the Buchenwald concentration camp. His early education had been interrupted by the forced closure of his Jewish school by the Nazis when he was in 7th grade. For the next several years, he managed to retain a voracious appetite for reading and self-education. It wasn’t until he migrated to Sweden in 1945, following the liberation of Buchenwald by American troops, that Carl resumed his formal studies while working full-time. He graduated in 1950 with an electrical engineering degree from Stockholm Institute of Technology.   It was in Stockholm that Carl met his future wife, Frieda; she was also a Holocaust survivor, from Vilna Lithuania, who was in Sweden with her parents awaiting visas for America. The couple married in Israel and migrated to the U.S. in 1952; by 1955, Carl graduated from Newark College of Engineering and was hired by GE. He subsequently earned an MBA from RPI in 1963. Working with other pioneers at the General Electric Research and Development Lab he played a substantial role in making the world's most powerful superconducting magnets. He then led Intermagnetics General (IGC was a spin-off from General Electric) to success as a prime manufacturer of MRI magnets. This video features interviews with Rosner and his coworkers who helped change our world by designing better MRI technology. This short clip features rare visual material from IGC (now owned by Philips), and the GE Hall of History (MiSci).   While becoming a pioneer in superconductivity and a Wizard of Schenectady, he also helped raise a family, and worked to serve both his civic and Jewish community. Together with his late wife Frieda, who passed away in 2000, he enjoyed meaningful close friendships with other WWII refugees, treasuring the freedom and quality of life provided in the U.S. He took special pride in the outstanding education his children were able to receive at the best universities in the country.   Always, Carl purposefully chose to focus on the future, to devote himself to “doing good.” He also “did well,” one could certainly say. But all of his efforts in the name of achievement were motivated by a belief that his own miraculous survival demanded of him a lifetime of helping others, whether in the form of generous philanthropy or by way of scientific innovation. He received numerous awards at both state and national levels, and was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. He received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1992 for Manufacturing by Inc. Magazine and Ernst & Young. In 2010 he helped establish the IEEE Council on Superconductivity Carl H. Rosner Entrepreneurship Award.   Carl was a righteous man who assiduously shared the story of his fortunate and stubborn Holocaust survival with students of all ages. He wanted all of us to learn from history, to deepen and expand our humanity, to question authority and pursue justice. Among many other indelible lessons, he taught us to love words and books, to follow our minds’ inquiries, and to believe in tomorrow’s possibilities.   As a husband and father, he was devoted and generous, wise and honest, loyal and forgiving. As an applied scientist, he was relentlessly curious and committed to the pursuit of practical innovations that would improve the lives of others. As a businessman, he was fair and tenacious, always treating his colleagues and employees with consideration and respect. As a Holocaust survivor, he was unwavering in his determination to live a meaningful life. As a friend, he was kind and caring, trustworthy and authentic. As a human being, he was ever-evolving, a beacon of inspiration, resilience, and hope.    In departing this world, Carl H. Rosner leaves behind one of his two younger brothers, Joseph Rosner of Bnei Brak, Israel; three children: Monica R. Brettler of Newton, MA;  Elizabeth Rosner of Berkeley CA, and Raphael Rosner of Marlboro VT (spouse Saint Rosner); six grandchildren: Talya Brettler (spouse Immanuel Buder), Ezra Brettler (fiancée Maya Sztainer), Frida, Meroushka, Chloe and Theodore Rosner; one great grandchild Eliana Brettler Buder; and many bereft friends, including and especially his longtime executive assistant Cathy Arduini. He also leaves a legacy of perseverance against obstacles, and a history of remembrance in the pages of his daughter Elizabeth’s books.    Graveside services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the Beth Israel Cemetery on Schermerhorn Street in Rotterdam (lower cemetery) Charitable contributions can be sent to the Carl Rosner Fund at the Albany Jewish Federation. https://youtu.be/Gzhi33fIURs To view the livestream of the service of Mr. Rosner, please visit the above link which will be available on Tuesday just prior to the service which will commence at 12 noon

Philip Cohen - May 29, 1921 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Philip Cohen of East Schodack passed away at the age of 100 on April 6, 2022, at his home of 77 years.  Philip was with his family, under the care of Hospice and an exceptional team of caretakers.  The last of his generation, Philip was predeceased by his devoted wife Eileen Dreisenstock Cohen, his siblings Ruby Cowan, Bessie Collins, Sarah Beskin, Al (Moishe) Cohen and their spouses.  He was a first-generation American son of Frank and Fanny Cohen.  Born in NYC, his family relocated to Troy, NY in the late 1930’s, where he met his wife Eileen in 1943 at her grandfather’s farm. From that point on they were together for 72 years until her passing six years ago.
Philip was a one-of-a-kind self-made man, growing up in the most difficult days of the depression.  He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp and in the Army Air Corp as a WWII munitions specialist.   During his lifetime he embraced every bit of technology created in the last century.  Until recently, he was on his computer reading the news, shopping and learning from the limitless content of YouTube.  He loved the movies of the 20’s and 30’s and could answer any question about them with accuracy.  Philip was hired as the first toll collector on the NYS Thruway, scoring the highest score on the first civil service exam and quickly becoming a Section Supervisor.  He was an expert in car repair, every sort of mechanical and electrical system, and continued to travel the world on YouTube. Philip was a strong, fit, beautiful man – and a man of few words.  His “dirty look” will live in memory for generations, as will the Cohen Family picnics in “the country”, where he umpired softball games and gave hayrides through the woods and hills of his home.
Philip is survived by three children, five grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  They are Robert Cohen (Rose), Locust Grove, Va; Marilyn Clopman (Joseph dec’d), Port St Lucie, Fl; and Susan Kugler (Dennis), East Schodack.  Grandchildren Andrew (Astrid), Mark (Johanna) and Nathan Clopman; and Kathryn Schmieding (Shawn) and William Kugler (Katie).  Great grandchildren Henry, Oscar and Hugo Clopman; Paul and Rose Clopman; River and Archer Schmieding; and Theo and Alana Kugler.  Philip is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, as well as good neighbors that are like family.
Philip’s legacy to his family was his intellect, good judgement, strong work ethic, sense of humor and quest for lifelong learning. He was proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments but was most amazed that his great grandchildren are the smartest generation ever. A graveside service will be held at the Independent Benevolent Cemetery on Fuller Road in Albany on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 11:30am  Albany,   In memory of their grandfather, Mr. Cohen's grandson's  Andrew and Nathan Clopman  will be officiating at the service

Dr. Stuart Ira Erner - August 09, 1951 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Slingerlands, New York - Erner
Stuart I. Erner, M.D., 70, died suddenly on April 1, 2022, in Albany, N.Y.
He was born August 9, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Phyllis B. and Henry J. Erner. He grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, N.Y., also with his younger brother Barry, who survives him.
Coming from a legacy of accomplished musicians, Stu studied classical piano from the age of five and taught himself guitar. During rock ‘n’ roll’s British invasion he fell in love and he paid his way through college and medical school playing gigs, also performing stand-up comedy. He enjoyed much Jewish, New York and latter-day Borscht belt culture, including such stand-up comedians as Jackie Mason and George Carlin and the Great Depression and World War II-era slapstick shorts of The Three Stooges.
At Stony Brook University in Long Island he was a relief pitcher on the baseball team and obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1972.
A childhood fascination with disease and lifelong struggles with personal and community health led him to study medicine. While at Tufts University Medical School in Boston he met a nurse on a blind date, Marlene Ellen Rinde, who survives him; the two married the next year.
Often generous to a fault, while a medical resident 1976-79 Stu established a nutrition program at the Neighborhood Health Center, a free health clinic in Pittsfield, Mass. Later in New York's Capital District he shared his medical expertise as a regular guest taking calls on the radio show on WQBK and WGY radio.
In 1979 he and Marlene moved to the Capital District. He practiced with Pankin & Balsam, 1979-87; Capital District Internal Medicine & Bariatric, 1987-97; and the Capital Region Progressive Medicine & Longevity Practice, from 2001 until his death.
He & Marlene had two children: Tobi, 39, a social worker in New York City, and Phil, 41, a farmer & politician in Kingston, N.Y. Music was Stu’s greatest gift to them; he loved playing and listening to all kinds of music and celebrated all musical achievements. Their house was always full of jamming with family & friends. With him directing the family band from the piano, Tobi sang lead and Phil played drums. When brother Barry visited, he played bass. Stu always kvelled over Tobi’s musical theater performances like his ancestors beforehand. Tobi & Phil continue to sing together especially for social causes.
Stu was a techno-optimist and futurist, and a lover of Star Trek and the X-Files. He had hopes for a peaceful future of spacefaring for humanity.
He often said that his loves in life were family & friends; his patients; music; and the New York Yankees.
Additional survivors include his brother Barry’s wife Melissa, his sister-in-law Annie Erner, and Barry & Annie’s children Stefanie Jagielski, Jonathan Erner, and David Erner, and their families; sister-in-law Jodie Rinde and her children Daria and Ethan; and numerous cousins. Services at the Ohav Shalom Cemetery on Church Road in Guilderland, NY on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 1pm.  The service will be live streamed at the following link,  beginning at 12:45pm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acye1WZA6Jo
The family will appreciate memorial contributions to: Congregation Ohav Shalom, Albany, N.Y.; the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Latham, N.Y.; and Hungry for Music, Washington, D.C. While working on her Doctorate, she met her husband, Al, who was also pursuing a Doctorate in French Literature. The two put on their best pairs of bellbottoms to marry in 1969, staging a groovy ecumenical service with a potluck reception on the college campus joined by a bevy of professors, colleagues and students. At the U of M, Nikki developed her lifelong dedication to social activism which she relentlessly maintained via Zoom and conference calls even through the years of punishing chemo treatments. Cancer had not met the likes of Nikki Descoteaux. At the University of Michigan she was a leader in the Black Action Movement holding workshops, protests, boycotting classes and marching in the streets of Ann Arbor. In the decades since, she devoted her life to idealism, serving as an articulate advocate for the environment, Women’s rights, and equality for all. Nikki was an ardent visual artist, expressing her creativity in many beautiful mosaic and glass works that she gifted lucky friends and family. She knitted beautiful afghans, donating these “comfort in covers” (her own label) to families in homeless shelters. She also loved and tirelessly supported the performing arts. Despite Al and Mike’s frequent needling, she was actually a lovely and lively singer with a penchant for parodies. Another of Nikki’s true passions was the outdoors, traveling with Al to hike trails, beaches, marshes and mountains the world over. An intrepid explorer, she demonstrated amazing organizational skills in planning all their trips, learning new languages, and ensuring a lifetime of adventures for the family. She will forever be remembered for her love and support of family, a multitude of dear friends and her advocacy for those in need. She gave her all to motherhood and being Al’s steadfast partner on their many trips around the globe.

Richard E. Altman - August 22, 1953 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/8178346320 Richard E. Altman
Loudonville, NY – Richard E. Altman, 68, passed away at the home of his brother in Loudonville on Saturday March 26, 2022 after a long illness.
Rich, devoted and loving son of the late Mildred and Arthur Altman and a loving ‘kid brother’ of Fred for 68 years.  He was also a loving cousin, uncle to Stephen, Eric, Gregory and David and a lifelong friend to a close circle with whom he shared many cherished life memories.
He had boundless compassion and empathy for people of all walks, faiths, races and genders based on their common humanity and without regard to individual differences.  He was the embodiment of these traits through his service to and with others.  You don’t get to be the first ‘male’ to be honored at the annual awards dinner of the Democratic ‘Women’ of Sullivan County without these characteristics being noticed.
He had a unique talent, largely self-taught, with a little help from the City University of New York for embracing and expressing the universal languages of word and music.  He made them both a vocation and an avocation by melding these disciplines into his writings and his advice and counsel to others both professionally and personally as an accomplished public relations and travel and tourism consultant.
His passions ran deep.  There was no more inspired or insightful authority on such diverse subjects as Abraham Lincoln, James Bond, Mohamed Ali and John, Paul, George and Ringo on which he possessed not only a wealth of fact and trivia but also a modest array of scholarly publication.  He had the pleasure to meet, interview and photograph the ‘Fab Four’ and ‘The Greatest’ among many others on a number of occasions.  He wrote so much about Honest Abe and James Bond, that you would think he met them too, even though one was a fictional character and the other died four score and ‘eight’ years before Rich was born.
He also had a passion for the culinary arts and was an accomplished chef of third generation tradition in his family.  He would modestly prefer to say he was just a ‘foodie’ but he has inspired and imparted to a fourth generation some of our favorite tastes and pleasures so they will live on at many more festive meals.
Through it all he was not addicted to personal aggrandizement and his character was always grounded in the tenets attributed to another of his heroes of both fictional portrayal and of a special person in his life: ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’.  That one’s for you Dad, he would have said.
Rich lived by the spiritual principles of his faith and with the humanity attributable to a Saint.  His memory shall be a blessing to all who share it.
