Obituary Preview: Olean- Dale B. Wagner “Loving Husband, Brother & Uncle”

Dale Wagner, 61 of 2222 Johnson Road, passed way on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the Cuba Memorial Hospital after a courageous 13 month battle with Glioblastoma with his wife by his side.

Born July 3, 1961 at the Cuba Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Herbert L. and Ethel L. Prentice Wagner. On November 19, 1983 he married Cynthia Meyers who survives.

Dale graduated from Angelica High School in 1979. He took Boces courses in building trades. Dale worked at Fassett Lane Lumber in Wellsville shortly after graduation. He then spent over 30 years in the Olean area doing contract cleaning. Then went to join the team at the Olean General Hospital in March of 2018. It saddened him to have to leave his job because of his diagnosis. Dale still had high hopes of getting better and going back to work.

Dale will forever be known as a hardworking man. He was detail oriented and highly organized in everything he did. Dale didn’t like being called a perfectionist, he just liked things done right. Dale was so gifted in so many ways. He did his own home projects. Dale truly had a gift for woodworking and was looking forward to retirement to be able to use his tools he had collected through the years.

Dale enjoyed the simple things in life. He enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. Looking back Dale wished he had spent more time with his dear nieces and nephews. He loved sitting around a campfire and going for long walks with his wife. He enjoyed the wildlife in his backyard. He also enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills play.

Dale’s faith in his Heavenly Father Jehovah gave him strength to endure his terminal illness. He encouraged others by his faith in God’s Kingdom to look forward to the time when no one will ever be sick again.

Dale leaves behind his loving wife of 39 years, Cindy and 5 siblings, Myrna Brodman of Henrietta, Dave Wagner of Bullhead City, AZ, Julie Bray of Olean, Zena Rittenhouse of Angelica and Daren Wagner of Alpharetta, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Dale was predeceased by his parents.

A special thanks to all of you family, friends, and neighbors for all your prayers and support and meals during this difficult journey.

Emma J. Hicklin, 104, formerly of Cuba went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at The Pines Health Care & Rehab Center in Olean.

Emma was born on January 14th, 1919, in Mount Morris to Melvin Nelson Smith and Mary Elizabeth Witcher Smith. In 1937 she married Donald Miles who predeceased her in 1955, She married Frank Schena of Cuba in 1973 who predeceased her in 1987, in 1999 she married Frank Hicklin of Olean who predeceased her in 2011.

She came from a very large family with nine siblings, six brothers and three sisters, all which have predeceased her. They were a poor family eking out a living mostly on small farms at four different locations in Mount Morris, Olean, Hinsdale and Cuba.

Later, when her kids were grown, she went to work at Acme electric, working in the Cuba, Allegany and Hinsdale plants over the years. She learned to drive so she could drive herself to work. After working there for several years, she retired.

Emma loved music and when she was younger, she played the piano, organ, guitar and her dad’s harmonica. Her family has fond memories of gathering around to sing hymns, Christmas songs and others as they were growing up. Emma was loved by everyone and always reciprocated that love.

Emma is survived by sons: Marvin Miles, Robert (Bob) Miles, Jim Miles and Ray (Sally) Miles and a daughter, Margaret (Peg) Geyer, 16 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and 11 Great Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her three husbands, Emma was predeceased by her siblings: Henry, Melvin, John, Charles, Daniel and Clifford Smith, Margaret Chokrach, Mabelle Glaske and Mary Shultz Washington, a grandson Robert John Miles and great grandson Tony (Anthony) Geyer.

David G. Cross of 8293 N. Branch Road passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.

David was born on May 31, 1969, in Buffalo and was the son of Gordon E. and Gail M. Ranney Cross. On January 5, 1998, David met the love of his life, his “wife”, Gail A. Jones, who survives.

David was a class of 1988 graduate of Olean High School. He graduated from Paul Smith College with his associates degree in Culinary Arts. David worked at Angee’s, The Castle, Brothers Bistro, Century Manor, Moon Winks, Rafi’s, St. Bonaventure Club House, Pit Stop and Woodside Tavern where he felt it was the best place he ever cooked.

David loved his friends and family. He enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, playing the drums, camping, bonfires especially big ones and burning wax boxes David also loved birds, nature, cooking, gatherings with friends, the Buffalo Sabres, books, dogs, and tequila. David was known for his humor and sarcasm, love of music including Rusted Root, The Grateful Dead, and the Ramones.

Along with his wife, Gail, David is survived by; his mother, Gail Cross of Olean; 2 daughters, Jessica P. (Jonathan) Townsend of Fredonia and Mary K. Pasieka of Cuba; a grandson Carter A. Mooney and 3 siblings, Barbara Ann Evans of Monroe, NC, Brian M. (Susan) Cross of Olean, Daryl T. (Tabatha) Cross of Monroe, NC, a niece and several nephews.

David was predeceased by his father Gordon E. Cross on September 21, 2013.

Charles R. Taylor - February 11, 1932 - January 08, 2023

Charles Ross Taylor, 90, died peacefully on January 8, 2023, in hospice care at Olean General Hospital in Olean.

He was born on February 11, 1932, in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, to Andrew and Isabella Ross Taylor.

Charles finished high school at the age of fourteen and immediately went into full-time work as an apprentice blacksmith. In 1951, he joined the British Army and served in Germany and then Egypt.

In 1955, he emigrated to the United States, settled in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania, and worked as a draftsman for Stackpole Carbon Co. in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania.

Six months prior to emigrating, Charles met Elizabeth Aitken. In June 1957, Elizabeth (Betty) emigrated to the United States, and they were married on December 28th of that year. Charles became an American citizen in the late 1950s.

In 1967, Charles took a job as a draftsman at Clark Bros. and moved to Olean. After several years at Clarks, he worked as an orderly at Olean General Hospital, worked as a cross country tractor trailer driver and then went back to drafting at Dresser Rand. in Wellsville until he retired in 1997.

Charles was a member of Abundant Life Ministries Weston Mills. He was an avid tennis player and a familiar figure at the Oak Hill Park tennis courts across from his home. He was also a determined golfer and had played as recently as this past September, with plans to play again this spring with his sons.

Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years Elizabeth Taylor, his daughter Elaine Chew (Mark), and sons Andrew Taylor (Shae) and Bruce Taylor (Nancy); grandchildren Mandi Hornung (Jonathan), Ashley Griffith (Clinton), Keren Warren (Tim), Charles Chew and Makayla Taylor; and great-grandchildren Natalie, Joseph, Charlie, Oliver, Ansley, Roslyn and Lillian.

Charles was predeceased by a brother, George Taylor, on March 31, 2022.

Mary L. Manko of 4497 Hamilton Road passed away on Thursday (December 8, 2022) at the Absolut Care of Allegany, following a lengthy illness.

Mary was born on November 14, 1928 in Cuba where she lived her whole life. She was the daughter of Antonio and Carolina Meale Midey and was the youngest of six children. On August 12, 1950, at Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Church, she married her loving husband George James Manko, Sr., who predeceased her on November 20, 1993.

Mary was a 1946 graduate of Cuba Central High School and 1948 graduate of Olean Business Institute. She worked at Clark Brothers in Olean after graduation which is now known as Dresser Rand.

Mary was a life-long parishioner of Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Church in Cuba. She was a member of the Women’s Altar Society and served faithfully on many church committees. She cherished her post as caretaker of the candles. She was also a member of both the Cuba Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed her life-long patronage of the Cuba Circulating Library.

Mary is survived by her three children; James (Ethel Kennedy) Manko of Providence, R.I., Thomas (Janet Mosconi) Manko of Avon, and Karen S. Manko of West Hartford, Conn.; three grandsons, Stephen, Daniel and Michael; and twenty-five nieces and nephews.

Along with her loving husband, George, Mary was predeceased by her parents; five siblings, Nicholas Vincent, Julia Angelina, Anthony Philip, Vincent Daniel and Dean Carl; a niece, Joanne Midey Halberstadt and baby nephew, Anthony Midey.

Mary lived her life simply and deeply through family, church, friends and Cuba. She will be greatly missed.

Graham was born on September 28, 1942, in Little Hulton, Manchester, England and was the son of Stanley and Jessie Piper Hughes. On October 8, 1977, at Bethany Lutheran Church he married his loving wife of 45 years Suzanne M. Stringer who survives.

Graham came to Toronto, Canada at the age of four and then moved to Andover, Massachusetts. Graham was a graduate of University of Massachusetts Lowell where he received a Doctorate Degree in Engineering. Graham worked for Dresser Rand and Haliburton for over 40 years.

Graham enjoyed traveling many places, gardening, bird watching, walking in the woods with wife and dogs. He formerly enjoyed playing gold when he could.

Graham was predeceased by a brother, Ian Hughes.

Most of all Sam enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her children whom she adored and her nieces and nephews. Sam is survived by her parents James and Krista of Scio, three children, Aubrianna E.M Randall, Oakley J. Blake, and Autumn R. Blake, three stepchildren, Haylee, Preston, and Mya Blake, four siblings, Joshua JK (Jessica) Randall of Bolivar, Jeremy I. (Lindsey) Hamilton of Junction Cave, Oregon, Dylan J. (Kailynn) Randall of Scio, and Alyssa M. (Timothy) Doherty of Friendship, many nieces and nephews, paternal grandfather David (Jodi)Randall of Cuba and paternal grandparents William Rockland (Judith) Hill. On November 29, 1997, it the Cuba Kingdom Hall he married the love of his life Margaret Szoke who predeceased him on July 2, 2015. After the death of his father Kenneth was raised by his mother Margaret and his stepfather George Barber. He began working at Cuba Cheese at the age of 17 and continued working for over 40 years as a milk receiver retiring in 2000. Kenneth also helped all of the other farmers beside his family farm on Crab Hollow Road working on weekends and holidays along with them when he was laid off at Cuba Cheese. Kenneth has been a member of Kingdom Hall since 1997. He enjoyed hunting, cutting wood, and walking he would walk all over from Crab Tree Hollow to Cuba Cheese. Kenneth is survived by one sister, Mary L. Adams of Black Creek. Kenneth Was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret; his parents; 3 sisters, Margaret Gaines and Ruth Hemingway, and Dorothy Johnson; and 3 brothers Harold, Joseph and Richard Williams Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Genesee Pkwy, Cuba on Saturday June 18, 2022 from 10:00am to Noon at which time a funeral service will be held. Barbara graduated from Bainbridge Central School and throughout her career worked in administrative assistant roles in law, energy, local government, manufacturing, and transportation. She was also an elected town justice in Dayton and village justice in South Dayton. Barbara was a faithful attendant of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Portville and later, United Methodist Church in Cuba. She enjoyed social activities and dabbled at the piano. Barbara loved to be active in the outdoors, enjoyed walking, swimming, and bicycling especially around her beloved Cuba Lake. She also enjoyed traveling, music, and dancing through life to the end. Barbara is survived by her sister, Mary Lou (Richard) Cholewinski of Hernado, FL.; two sons, Scott (Stacy) Renner of Syracuse and Dan (Sarah) Renner of Monroe City, MO.; two daughters, Sandra (Jeff) Keppel of Smethport, PA., and Mary (Jim) Murphy of Glens Falls; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, infant son John Renner, her brother Philip Besaw, her husband Robert Johnson, and her former husband Richard Renner. Family will receive friends at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Genesee Pkwy, Cuba on Tuesday March 15th, 2022, from 3:00-5:00pm at which time a funeral service will be held. The Rev. Kay of Cherry Creek; six grandchildren, Justin, Courtney, Chelsea, Keeler, Dustin, and Andrew; many great grandchildren, four siblings, Beverly (Lynn) Witherite of Sandy Ridge, PA, Judith (David) Mourer of Youngsville, PA, Wilber Blair (Linda) Keeler, of Lubbock, TX, Marion D. Lyle Paul Edwards - August 08, 1929 - February 04, 2022

Lyle Paul Edwards,92, formerly of Bolivar, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at the Wellsville Manor following an illness.

Lyle was born August 8, 1929, in Belmont and was the son of Howard and Mabel B. Goodridge Edwards. On April 5, 1952, at the EUB Church in Obi he married the love of his life Ruth Esther LaFever who survives.

Lyle was a 1946 Graduate Portville Central School. He served in the US Army from 1948 to 1952. In 1949 to 1950 occupation duty in Japan. In 1950 to 1951 in the Korean War with the 1st Cav. 27 Ord. Co. and was honorably discharged in 1952 as a Staff Sargent.

Lyle was employed by G. L. F. as a Store manager, and then Agway a dairy enterprise Salesman where he enjoyed building relationships with the farmers and Families he worked with. He retired in 1990 after 36 years on the job.

Besides his work Lyle enjoyed serving his community and his church. Lyle was a founding member of the Faith Bible Church in Little Genesee in 1970, where he served as a Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School teacher. He was known to fill pulpits in several churches. Lyle and his wife served as a missionary in the Philippines for 17 months and made a short-term mission trip to Venezuela and Lyle made a mission trip to India.

Lyle was member of the Bolivar American Legion Post 0772. He was a member and president of the Portville School board and the Cattaraugus County School Board and was voted Life membership in the Parent Teacher Association. Lyle was a member of the Allegany County Extension Board and was selected Conservation Man of the Year in Potter, PA. Lyle served as a councilman in the town of Genesee and as a supervisor for three years. He enjoyed being a volunteer at Jones Memorial Hospital for several years.

Lyle was proud to be an American soldier and his relationship with his Savior, but most of all he was proud of his wife and family.

Along with his loving wife, Ruth, of almost 70 years, Lyle is survived by; a son, Steven (Wanda) Edwards of Bolivar; 2 daughters, Linda (Larry) St. Lawrence of Great Falls, MT, and Kathleen (Daniel) Simpson of Rapid City, SD; 11 grandchildren, Abigail, Erica, Vanessa, and Brianna St. Lawrence, Luke and Jonathan Simpson, Christopher, Eric, Andrea, Kyle and Matthew Edwards; 19 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Lyle was predeceased by his parents and 2 brothers, Howard and Harry Edwards

Greta was born on December 17th, 1933, in Cattaraugus and was the daughter of Earl and Leona Crosley Rogers. On June 23rd, 1951, she married her loving husband Wayne D. Randolph who predeceased her on April 10th, 2000.

Greta formerly attended Rushford Methodist Church for many years and was a part of the Rushford Senior Citizen group. Greta worked for Jan and Bev’s Home Care as a home aid for about 10 years in the 70s and 80s. Greta enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking and loved decorating for Christmas. She loved to make the holiday special for her family at Christmas time. Greta also enjoyed drawing, quilting, lawn sailing, and her flower garden. Greta enjoyed to make a house a home.

Greta is survived by her six children: Beverly R. (Edward) McVay of Freedom, Shirly M. Saulter of Rushford, Calvin L. Randolph of Ashford, Don B. Randolph of Florida, Steven C. Randolph of Olean, Doug K. (Alex) Randolph of Mt. Morris, four grandchildren; Jonathan, Jeffrey, Tonia, and Amanda, and ten great grandchildren.

Greta was predeceased by her four brothers; Earl Jr., Robert “Bob”, David, and Dennis, three sisters; Crystal Cucchiaro, Teresa Veno, and Maxine Martin, and one grandson; Andrew E. McVay.

Zane was born on March 16th, 1927, in South Warsaw, NY and was the son of Walter H. and Lula Merril Scott. He was formerly married to Ewdokija “Tony” Moros. On May 1st, 1988, at the Friendship Episcopal Church he married his loving wife, Lois C. Cafrella who survives. Zane grew up in the Perry-Warsaw area on a family farm. He served in the US Army during WWII in the 33rd Infantry. Zane later became a businessman with multiple businesses including becoming a realtor and worked with his wife under United National Scott Realty in Friendship. He owned and maintained rental properties. He attended Friendship United Methodist Church. When he was younger he enjoyed traveling and he even traveled to the Holy Islands in Israel. Zane will be remembered fondly as a man who was capable and willing fix anything and was always there to help other people. Along with his loving wife of 33 years, Zane leaves behind two children; Walter G. (Lorrain) Scott of Perry, and Larene V. (Steven) McCabe of Warsaw, four stepchildren; Linda C. Terry Palmer of Belfast, Donna C. (Dennis) Bliven of Belmont, Donald C. (Marni) Parker of the Bahamas, and David C. (Lee) Parker of Florida, 14 grandchildren; Dawn, Valeria, Scott, Todd, Wayne, Angela, Sarah, Michael, Matthew, Christopher, Melinda, Katherine, Dustin, and Garrett, and several great and great great grandchildren. Zane was predeceased by his parents, and three brothers. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 9th, 2021, at 1:00pm at United Methodist Church of Friendship, officiated by Rev. Becky Worth at 21 West Main Street Friendship, burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Friendship American Legion will accord full military honors. Dolly was a member of Gospel Fellowship Church where she loved to sing and dance and had many friends and loved to socialize and would talk to anyone. She loved listening to Elvis Presley. She was he light of her family’s lives and she never made a complaint. Dolly was loved by everyone that knew her.

Dolly was the oldest of seven children. Surviving her are her siblings: Georganne J. (Robert) Carney of Cuba, Melanie L. (Lisa Rouleau) Blake of Cuba, Daniel L. Blake of Olean, Sherry L. (Robert) Zajicek of Cuba, Darry L. (Cheryl) Blake of Cuba, and Kathleen S. Cummins, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Dolly was predeceased by her parents and a brother-in-law Jeffrey Cummins.

Burton Lee Yates, Jr of 2475 Route 305 Cuba, passed away on November 26th, 2021, in Olean General Hospital following a brief illness.

Lee was born in Cuba on December 26th, 1959. He was the son of Burton Lee Yates, Sr and Mary Lee Wilkins. He is survived by the love of his life, Cindy, whom he married on November 17th, 1978.

Lee graduated from Portville Central School in 1978 as well as Olean BOCES where he took up welding. He worked for Palmer Airmotive at the Wellsville Airport where he worked on planes. He later followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and worked in the oil fields in the Allegany, NY and Bradford, PA area. He was employed by Pennzoil Company for about 14 years and then East Resources for another several years. Truly a man who loved the oil field and hard work, he also enjoyed producing oil on a lease he owned for several years in Obi. He was currently employed for the Town of Clarksville Highway Department where he started in 1999.

Lee will be remembered as a hardworking, gentle man who was willing to help many around his community. In the 1980’s, he worked with the youth in the Richburg area in the AWANA program at Richburg First Day Baptist Church, where he also served on the Deacon Board. He always made sure his family was provided for and was not too proud to take any job to make sure there was food on their table. Lee was an avid outdoors man and hard worker who enjoyed his motorcycles, tractors, and his land. He proudly resided on the homestead owned by his grandparents Darrol and Ethel Wilkins. He loved hosting family gatherings in his pavilion he built on the homestead. The most memorable for family and friends will be his fourth of July celebration in the summer of 2021 where his love of God, Family and Patriotism to his Country were evident to all in attendance. Most of all he loved being able to truly spend time with his wife and family, taking a trip across the country with his wife in 2012, many trips to the Outer Banks and Gospel Cruises with extended family. He attended Obi Community Church and Central Baptist Church in Olean.

Along with his loving wife, Cindy, Lee is survived by two children; a daughter, Holly A. Yates of Cuba and a son, Adam L. (Angela) Yates, of Olean three grandchildren, Anson, Hope, and Zachary, Father, Burton L. Yates Sr. of Bolivar, Father-in-Law, Wayne Marsh of Bolivar, three siblings; Tammy (Joe) Blauvelt, Alan (Lara) Yates, Leah (Garth) Witherell, and three step siblings; Darla (Barry) Rockefeller, Barb (Don) Rockefeller, and Dave (Jaime) Gleason and several beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother, Mary Lee Gleason, step-father Jerry Gleason, step-mother Nancy Yates, Mother-in-Law Harriet Marsh and a brother, Terrance Lee Yates.

Born on Thursday, January 18, 1962 in Olean. Jeff was the youngest of three children and the son of Loyd "Jupe" Coen and Neva Warner Coen Boysha.

Jeff spent his childhood growing up and attending school in Franklinville, at age 10, he relocated with his family to Hinsdale. Jeff graduated from Hinsdale Central School and was also a graduate of BOCES Masonry program. Jeff was an expert and skilled mason his entire life. He was employed by masonry and general contractors in the greater Olean and Buffalo area, as well as working on many projects with his son Tyler. Jeff was a member and a past commander of Sons of Hinsdale American Legion #1434.

Jeff enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, he was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and devoted to companions, his dog Bones and his two kitties Gracie and Alex.

Jeff is survived by his loving family, sons Tyler (Siriah) Coen and Travis (Macey) Hodson, stepchildren Sean (Jolean) Reitz and Amber Reitz. His mother and step father, Neva and Joe Boysha, sister Kay (Reid) Coen-Lubojasky and sister-in-law Sara Coen, Jeff leaves seven grandchildren, Rueger, Jailin, Gatlin, Jayden, Cohen, Corey, Connor, Several nieces and nephews, his son's mother Audrey Shoup as well as many other family members and friends.

Sandra graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Pleasant Hills, PA, and later was a 1954 graduate of Carlo University. She moved to Cuba from Strykersville in 1999. Sandra was a registered dietitian and retired after 40 years. Later she became a secretary at the Cuba First Baptist Church for 12 years.

Sandra was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuba. She took clothes, furniture and household goods to Christian Appalachian Project in Kentucky she made over 75 trips. Sandra was involved in several local Christian projects including Mother Hubbard’s cupboards, bundle up babies, and the pencils and crayon project.

Sandra loved hearing Larry play music. She also enjoyed flower gardening and needlework. Sandra was known for being a caring and giving person.

Along with her loving husband, Larry, Sandra is survived by; a stepson, David L. (Julie) Lathrop of Marilla; 2 stepdaughters, Amy L. Lathrop of Lackawanna, and Kathleen M. Lathrop of Orchard Park; a sister, Andrea (Stephen) Michaels of Pittsburg, PA; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Phil served in the US Army from April 8, 1953 to April 7, 1955. He worked at Dresser Rand in Olean for over 30 years, retiring in 1998. Phil also worked as a meat cutter at Loblaws for a number of years during that same time. Following his retirement, he drove a limousine for a period of time, as well as, shuffling cars between dealerships and the auto auction for Team Chevy for a number of years.

Phil was an avid reader and enjoyed watching crime shows. He also enjoyed being at home, but he truly loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Phil is survived by; 4 children, Linda L. (Thomas) Vennard of Auburndale, FL, Philip H. (Cindy) Cole of Hinsdale, Kathryn M. Cole of Winchester, VA, and Elaiza (Mark) Neu of Cuba; 9 grandchildren, Thomas, Tammi, Kimberly, James, Michael, Kristina, Claudia, Patrick, and Lauren; 18 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
