Gary was born in Dubuque, IA, on  February 24, 1943, to his parents, Leonard Thomas Smith and Monica (Clemen) Smith. Gary was raised in  Peosta, IA on the family farm with his seven brothers and sisters.
Gary graduated from Peosta High School, Class of 1961. Gary married Carol Ann (Bakey) on June 27, 1964, at Holy  Family Church, New Melleray, IA. Gary was proudly employed for 48-years at John Deere Dubuque Works as THE third shift toolmaker. Towards the end of his career at John Deere, Gary's left hand was pulled into a milling machine  and he lost a finger and a thumb. He took an ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital in an attempt to  reattach his digits. In the operating room, the surgeon told him they couldn't be reattached. So, Gary had  the doctor cut off what was left and sew them up, with no anesthesia! He then went back to work the very  next day. Clearly Gary loved his profession, but he went back to work to prevent John Deere from recording  a lost day of work due to an accident...Gary was also very dedicated to his family and was always available  to lend a hand. During his off hours, you could find him working on machinery or helping with the harvest  on the farm in Peosta. Some years, he would do his shift at "Deere's" and head straight to the farm, harvest  corn with his father and brothers, catch a few hours of sleep and repeat!
Gary was a member of the UAW Local 94 Union, Brotherhood of Teamsters and  Elks Lodge. Gary also enjoyed his experiences as the team bus driver for The Gentlemen of Dubuque Rugby  club. In his younger years Gary enjoyed wrenching on cars and owned many classic GM  vehicles, his favorite, a 1969 Pontiac GTO. He also owned one Ford, a couple of Toyota and whatever was  the flavor of the month at Grady's Done Right Autos. Gary definitely knew the meaning of "You asked for it, you got it..." As documented via family photographs, when still in his teens, Gary once hoisted an engine  out of his car using a chain and a branch of a tree on the family farm. He started this project around noon  and by 7:00 pm that same night, he had swapped engines and was on his way to the dance! On any given  weekend you could find Gary at a local stock car race or touring around on his Harley Davidson. Once Gary  fell in love and married Carol, slow pitch softball, bowling, euchre and dancing became more his speed.  Gary was a proud father of two children and grandfather to four. You may have bumped into Gary a time or  two and been unable to escape as he energetically shared every detail about his kids, grandkids, or latest  experience. Later in life, Gary enjoyed vacationing with Carol and spending time in Arizona with family and  friends. After retirement you might have seen Gary at the local lock and damn #11, reading the paper, drinking coffee or just talking to people. He was such a fixture at lock #11, that many of the captains knew him by name and said hello when locking through...While dad is no longer with us, we know he is now  reunited with mom and together they are on their way to breakfast at the Village Inn, you go Elvis!
He is survived by his son, Dan Smith and his wife Jennifer (Helle) Smith, Dubuque, and their children, Cole and  Gabriella. His daughter, Dana Holthaus, and her husband Brad Holthaus, Dubuque, and their children  Isabella and Sophia. Brothers, Leonard Thomas "Lonnie" Smith II, and Christopher (Mary Beth) Smith.  Sisters, Mary Helen (Richard) Goss, Laura Smith. Cousin Grayson (Janet) Smith. Brother-in-laws Richard  (Keiko) Bakey, Gene “Mud” Bakey, John (Ruth) Bakey, Mark Beckman, Mike Breen and Don Hentges. Sister in-law Juanita Bakey and many loving nieces and nephews.
Gary is preceded in death by his wife Carol Ann (Bakey) Smith, his father Leonard, mother Monica (Clemen) Smith, and their stillborn baby. His stepmother and aunt, Innocence Ann (Clemen) Smith, brother David Smith, sisters Diane Hentges and Karen Smith. His father-in-law James Bakey, mother-in-law Bernice (Cavanaugh)  Bakey, brother-in-law Jerry (Juanita) Bakey, and sisters-in-law, Mary (Bakey) Breen, Darlene (Bakey)  Beckman and Kay (Gene) Bakey.

Larry was born on August 15, 1952, in Osage, Iowa, to Dr. Charles F. Watson and Mary Sue (Kennedy) Watson. He attended Fairfield High School, spent a year at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and completed his undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. Larry married Patricia Wessol in 1980 in Madison. The two later divorced. In 2009 Larry’s best friend Dr. Dan Engelbrecht and his wife Sue introduced him to the love of his life, Hania (Laskowska) Mormann. In 2015 the couple was married at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Larry warmly welcomed Hania’s children, Annie and Daniel, into his family as his own.
Larry lived life to the fullest and was always up for an adventure. His happiness and carefree attitude were contagious. He was known for always joking and his incredibly giving soul – whether it be sharing his musical talents, supporting countless local artists, or graciously giving to his favorite charities.
Larry started his dental career in 1979, acquiring a practice in Madison. He served the local community for 22 years and sold his practice in 1999. Larry continued practicing dentistry as a Locum Tenens Dentist in Wisconsin and frequently traveled to South Dakota to serve the Native American reservations. He expanded his impact by joining the VA Madison Healthcare team and practicing as a dentist for five years, retiring in 2016. Larry’s patients remember his kind, compassionate, and gentle nature.
In his retirement, Larry loved traveling, golf, the Iowa Hawkeyes, spending time with Hania at their Galena hobby farm, and their dog Willa. Perhaps what he loved most of all was doing whatever he could to make Hania happy.
Left to honor Larry’s memory are his wife Hania; his stepdaughter Annie (Jeff) Koelker of Asbury and stepson Daniel (Lily) Mormann of Madison; grandchildren Lucy and Charlie Koelker and Mae Mormann; siblings Jim (Bette) Watson of San Antonio, Texas, Dick (Mary Ann) Watson of Seguin, Texas, and Tom (Kathleen) Watson of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother.
As his final act of kindness, Larry’s brain has been donated to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he will aid researchers in studying dementia.
Hania and Larry’s family would like to thank the staff of Home Instead, Finley Hospital Summit Health Center, and countless friends, neighbors, and community leaders for their thoughtful care of Larry. A special thanks to Angela W. Hubanks, PA-C of Grand River Medical Group, for her guidance and compassion.

Mark M. Dalsing - August 20, 1966 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Dubuque)
Obituary Preview: Mark M. Dalsing, 55, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 15th 2022.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at The Church of the Nativity, with a parish wake service beginning at 7:45 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022, at The Church of the Nativity with Fr. Andy Upah officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, with honors accorded by the Dubuque Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.
Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory in Dubuque, IA is in charge of arrangements.
Mark was born August 20th, 1966 to Myron and Judith Dalsing. He was the rambunctious sibling to Lynn and Todd. Residing in Wisconsin and Iowa throughout his life he got to meet many people, many of which he was glad to call friends. He graduated from Southwestern High School in 1984 and then went on to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to major in Criminal Justice. After graduating from college in 1988, Mark went to the police academy to officially become a police officer.
Mark joined the Dubuque Police Department on September 25th, 1989 as a patrolman, then became one of the first bicycle cops and quickly made his way through the rankings. Mark served as a Patrol Lieutenant, Community Policing Captain, and Criminal Investigations Division Captain before becoming Chief of Police in 2010, one of his most proud accomplishments. Throughout his time as Chief, Mark made many changes to the City of Dubuque. He was a proud board member to the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Project Concern and United Way of Dubuque Tri-States. One of the things Mark was most known for was his sense of humor when it came to Facebook posts for the Police Department. After retiring from the police department on September 25th, 2021, Mark became the Affordable Housing Director at Catholic Charities where he served until his passing. No matter his position, he always made sure to leave work at the door and put his family first.
While he enjoyed being an officer, he enjoyed being a husband and father more. Mark married Jennifer M. Eisbach on October 22nd, 1994 at the Church of Nativity in Dubuque. Their wedding was far from perfect. With the mother of the bride having a heart attack, to being locked out of the church and then losing their wedding photos. It didn't matter to Mark and Jennie though because at the end of the day they were now husband and wife. A year later they welcomed their son, Benjamin and two years later their daughter, Emilie. Benjamin later went on to follow in his hero's footsteps and also joined the criminal justice career.
Some of Mark's other proudest accomplishments were being admitted to the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA in 2011. From there he went on to join the Presidential Leadership in 2016 where he had the honor of meeting past Presidents of the USA. He also received his Masters of Business from University of Dubuque where he was an adjunct Criminal Justice professor. Mark also had the honor of being sworn in as a US Marshall, as well as other accomplishments not listed. Mark was an avid participant in the Polar Plunge, dressing up in costumes to plunge into the Mississippi River to raise funds for the Iowa Special Olympics.
Mark enjoyed his retirement for a short while and could often be seen riding in his "new toy", a blue Jeep Wrangler. When he wasn't doing that you could find him walking on Grandview with Jennie and their dog Bucky or participating in 5K races throughout Dubuque. Mark was a huge Packer fan, going as far as painting their basement green and yellow. His favorite pastimes include buying collectable GI Joe figurines and mini football helmets.
Life threw a curve ball at the Dalsing's when Jennie was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2020. It was the scariest time of their lives but Mark made sure to be the light of the room and keep a smile on everyone's face. Mark could be heard cheering Jennie on as she rang the bell December 31st, 2020 that she was cancer free. Jennie truly was the love of his life.
Although he passed suddenly, Mark wouldn't want those who knew him to sit and mourn. Instead he would want everyone to honor his legacy by speaking memories of his past, laughing and joking and being an extra hand to those that needed it.
Left to honor Mark are his wife of 27 years, Jennie, his son Ben (McKenna Middendorf) Dalsing and daughter Emilie (Colten Wessels) Dalsing. His parents, Mike and Judy Dalsing of Lake Wales, FL/Asbury, IA; sister Lynn (Ken) Rigdon of Asbury and their children Kaley (Matthew) Burgmeier, Zachary Rigdon and Jackson (Becca Lahey) Rigdon; and brother Todd (Kim) Dalsing of Minneapolis, MN and their children Isabella and Xavier Dalsing. Mother-in-law Nancy Eisbach; sisters-in-law Tina (Dale) Berning of Hazel Green, WI and their children Nathan (Natalee Vavra) Berning and Natalie Berning; and Julie (Bill) Black of Farley, IA and their children Nicholas (Patti Koster) Brecht,  Aidan, and Liam black; and his law enforcement family.
Mark joined his father in law Peter Eisbach, grandparents Maxine and LaVern Kowalski and Luella and Bernard Dalsing, and best friend Tony Richard in Heaven.
The Dalsing family would like to thank the Dubuque Police Department, Dubuque Fire Department Personnel, and emergency dispatchers that offered their assistance in an emergency moment. For 32 years, the department became another family. We cannot truly thank you all enough for everything. Thank you to Leonard Funeral home for honoring Mark as well.
A Mark Dalsing memorial fund had also been established for his favorite charities.
