Linda White - October 28, 1921 - July 30, 2023

Departed: 07/30/2023 (South Richmond Hill)
Obituary Preview: LINDA VICTORIA WHITE 28 October, 1921 - 30 July, 2023
Linda Victoria White was born on October 28, 1921, in Bocas del Toro, Panama, to Hilda and John Beresford Hines. Jamaicans by birth, Linda’s parents migrated to Panama, where, for many years, they lived and worked in various industries within the large complex of the Panama Canal Zone.
Linda was the fourth of eight children, including, Vincent Harold, John Hines, Ransford Gladstone, John Ferdinand, Florence Elizabeth, Beresford John, and Carlos Emmanuel. All her siblings preceded her in death.
Linda was ten years old when her family returned - permanently - to Jamaica; and it is this Jamaican culture and society that shaped her identity, and rooted in her a strong sense of cultural belonging. For her, Jamaica was home.
As powerful as her love of her country, was Linda’s love of the Anglican Church, within which, from an early age, she anchored her faith in God. She often described her feeling of safety in the faith she carried, when circumstances around her seemed determined to fail her. Linda was shy and reticent, but was, simultaneously, a strong-willed, determined and resilient young woman, who refused to bend to life’s challenges. She was always a fighter. And this is one of her multiple qualities that garnered admiration and respect from everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Linda Hines was no more than a young girl when she married Mr. Herbert White, a young (though several years older than she) man with “the perfect tenor voice”, and with whom she fell deeply in love. She was only a year older when she gave birth to her first child. Mr. and Mrs. White were parents to six children: Marjorie (deceased); Horace; Wilmot; Trevor; Patricia, and Cleonie.
Together with her husband, Linda built and operated a successful business - a general family store - which served the needs of the community. Unfortunately, Herbert passed away when their sixth child was only several months old. Linda was still young when, some ten years into her marriage, she was widowed and left as sole caregiver to her six, young children. This was a tragedy that could have - indeed would have - broken the spirits of any less internally resilient human being. However, despite her youth, Linda centered her gaze upon God. She prayed; she exercised her beautiful voice in the loud, proud, singing of her Anglican hymns. She loved popular, and traditional, Jamaican folk music, too. And she sang. Joyfully. No victim, this young woman turned tragedy into purpose. She sang to her soul’s content and filled the hearts of those who heard her with music. And joy. Following her husband’s death, Linda continued the family business on her own. She often humored (she was also possessed of a wicked sense of humor) that, but for her generosity, her business would surely have been more successful. But that’s just who she was: a deeply caring, trusting, generous soul, who never met a person in need to whom she did not gift her very last farthing!
Linda subsequently had three more children: Doreen, Winsome (deceased) and Clive. As a single parent, Linda (affectionately known as Mama), worked tirelessly to help and to provide opportunities for her children. Though she was strict with all her children, as she was with other children in the community, demanding that their conduct be held to the highest standards, her devotion to children made it clear that they were her joy.
She was quite ambitious and thought to be a teacher. Circumstances did not permit her that dream. But she always projected these ambitions into her children and, in turn, into her grandchildren, many of whom she literally helped to raise, both in Jamaica, and following her migration to the United States, where she proudly studied for, and earned her U.S. citizenship.
She had a brilliant mind, Mama did. At the tender age of 101 years and 10 months, she remained an avid consumer of current events. She had a keen sense of history, was politically astute, and especially delighted in the lives of President and Mrs. Obama. In fact, at age 99, she consumed Mrs. Obama’s Becoming, among other books she read. Up until the moment of her passing, Mama’s fierce love for her family and a faithful relationship with God witnessed no failure. Her spirit ascended to Heaven in love and in prayer.
Dearest Mama, our Matriarch, our sage. We love you with all our hearts, though at this moment they break. Thank you for the seeds of wisdom you imparted to us, always with care and hope for our own future. Your profound impact on us all will never be erased. You will forever remain alive in the hearts and minds of your surviving children, your grandchildren, your great, and great-great grandchildren, and in all who had the honor and great fortune to have been known by you.
Thank you. If Roses Grow In Heaven by Dolores M. Garcia If roses grow in Heaven Lord, please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Mother’s arms
And tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and I miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek
And hold her for a while. Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, But there’s an ache within my heart
That will never go away. Acknowledgements
The family of Mrs. Linda White wishes to express our deepest gratitude to all family and friends, who have given your support to us during these very painful times of our lives.
Dearest, dearest, Kamla. You poured your love and all your soul into loving care of our beloved Grandma. And you took such wonderful care of us as well. You are our Angel, Gabriel, upon this earth! And Mama loved you deeply. Special thanks to Drs. Kathe Hift, Dr. Donnel Stern, and Dr. Babette Stern. Words cannot express how much we love you and appreciate your practical help, your medical advice, and your unwavering emotional support, during these long years of our Mom’s illness. You were our anchor when chaos threatened. You are our dear friends, and you are the true meaning of family!
Special thanks are due, as well, to Ms. Catherine Bonet who, in the brief time that you got to know our mother, worked miracles in moments of uncertainty. You brought us hope and calm. We are forever grateful to you.
Thank you, to the Very Rev. Dr. Norman Whitmire, who, at a critical moment in our process, stepped in with resolve and unwavering generosity; and, in so doing, spared us further grief. We are profoundly grateful to you and we know that our words and sentiments will never match your treasured acts of kindness toward our family.
We also wish to extend our thanks to the staff and congregation of All Saints Episcopal Church, for your support in helping smooth our Mother’s journey home. Thank you, as well, members of the Kearns Funeral Home, especially Mr. Patrick Kearns, Sr., who cared for our Mom, and helped ease our way, as we navigated this most difficult path in our lives.
