Kairul "Sheila" Persaud - December 22, 1942 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (South Richmond Hill)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kairul "Sheila" Persaud, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and great-grandmother. Sheila was born in Georgetown, Guyana in 1942 to Abdool Wahab Khan (Alice) and Najerian Khan.
Sheila began her journey as a short-hand typist in Guyana, where she met and fell in love with her husband, Thakoor Persaud. Their love story led to a beautiful marriage on August 20th, 1961, blessed with five children. Sheila's life was a testament to resilience and adaptability. From a city slicker turned country girl, she embraced every challenge with determination and grace.
Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she ventured into owning a store in Stabroek Market, showcasing her strength and leadership. In 1989, Sheila immigrated to the United States with her family, embracing a new chapter with courage and determination. She cut her hair short, started wearing jeans and went out looking for work so that she can feed her family. Back then, there wasn't an internet to apply for a job so she strolled up and down Jamaica Avenue in Queens with her determined personality and applied for work at every single store. She found her home at Woolworth's Department Store where she spent most of her career as one of their top sales people. She worked tirelessly and never complained.
Despite her demanding schedule, Sheila always made time for her family, cherishing moments at Great Adventure, Coney Island, and other beloved New York City spots on her day off.
Her culinary skills were legendary, ensuring no visitor left her home without a hearty meal. Sheila's love extended beyond her immediate family; she was a constant presence in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Sheila is survived by her loving husband, Thakoor, her children Juliet (Omesh), Janet, Annette (Chris), Ricky, and Nalini, Grandchildren: Lenny (Priya), Marciano, Mike, Mark, David (Victoria), C.J., Lukas, and Georgia. Great Grandchildren: Sophia and Olivia.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life during the viewing on Wednesday, May 8th from 5 pm to 9 pm at Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home, 103-33 Lefferts Blvd., Richmond Hill, NY 11419.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 9th, starting at 10 am at Glenn Morris Presbyterian Church, 118-02 109th Avenue, Richmond Hill, NY 11420, followed by cremation at All Souls Crematory, 7202 Astoria Blvd S, East Elmhurst, NY 11370 at 12 pm.

Elizabeth Ticas - September 27, 1926 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (South Richmond Hill)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Betteta Ticas aka Doña Eli, Mrs. Ticas, Mami
Born in Lima Peru on September 27, 1926.
Her widowed mother Sra. Mejia was the proprietor and principal photographer of the most renown photography studio in the city. In the Fall of 1954, while on tour, acclaimed singer Oscar Ticas walked into the studio for new head shots. He spotted Señorita Betteta. He was thunderstruck. Soon after he asked for her hand. Mama forbade the marriage.
They eloped.
As the tour continued through South America, Señor Ticas began to fall on hard times. One bright spot: daughter, Milagros Anahí was born that Summer. Señora Ticas seeing the need to provide for her family, asked her sister, who was already residing in Baltimore, MD, for sponsorship into the US. From there we moved to NYC.
Even with almost no ability to speak English, but armed with an education in Fine Arts and photography experience, Mrs. Ticas landed a job in what used to be the Photography District in Manhattan. She became our major wage earner and believed in the American Dream. Mami never looked back, just put on the rosiest glasses and stayed positive in the face of all adversity and challenge. For her, there would be only one outcome: “Veeektorrry!!!”
.
Being human & fallible, she did sometimes pave the road to Hell with her good intentions. But, without exception, she did try to do her best for others.
.
She saw the good in everyone, was nice to everybody, had a smile for all. Loved all.
She also loved vanilla ice cream, ‘shrimples’, Irish coffee, her cats* and Paris. But, she adored her son-in-law John DeCesare. Now, that she has left us on March 9, 2024, in her honor, go out and ¡AMAD! *Bobbi and the Strays will appreciate any donation you care to offer: https://bobbiandthestrays.org/donate/
