Raffaele Barletta - February 25, 1926 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: Raffaele Barletta, 96, of Brighton, MA and Mirabella Eclano, Italy died at his home on March 24, 2022. Raffaele was the beloved husband of Angelina (Tutolo) Barletta, also formerly of Mirabella Eclano, Italy for the past 59 years.
Raffaele was born in Italy on February 25, 1926, the son of the late Pietro Barletta and Maria (LoPilato) Barletta. Raffaele emigrated to the U.S. in 1963 to join family members who had previously settled in the Boston area.
He was the devoted father of Marilena Barletta of McLean, Virginia and her husband, Dana Frix, Alida Barletta of Vienna, Virginia and her husband, Douglas Frost, and Orietta Barletta of Lexington, Massachusetts and her husband, Ben Kaplan. He was the proud grandfather of Giancarlo Frix, Luca Frix, Massimo Frix, Giacomo Kaplan, and Francesca Kaplan. He is predeceased by his brothers Bernardino, Antonio, and Salvatore, and leaves his brother Aquilino and sisters Assunta Fiorentino, Rosina Addonizio, and Petrina Tenaglia, who he loved like they were his own children. He also leaves dozens of much-loved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and so many cousins, and friends.
Growing up in Italy, Raffaele worked tirelessly on the family farm and helped to raise his siblings and support his family after the early death of his father when Raffaele was just a teenager. He also served as a local city council member for his town.
After moving to the U.S. to join his family, Raffaele worked in various factory jobs, eventually spending more than 20 years with Honeywell, working on an assembly-line building mainframe computers until his retirement. He was as passionate about American politics as he was about Italian politics. He was animated when he spoke of how the government could and should help the people it served and forever amazed by the resources of this country and how unfairly they were distributed. Everyone who knew him knew what he thought about the issues of the day. As a proud Democrat, he voted in every election he could from the time he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen because it was important to him to have his say in how we were governed. He loved listening to Italian soccer on the radio, watching the Bruins, and eventually warming up to the Patriots and American football.
Raffaele firmly believed that education was the key, and while he felt that opportunity had passed him by, he made certain that his three daughters shared this view. He supported their educational efforts and was proud when his daughters graduated from Harvard, something he couldn't have imagined as a young man working on his farm in Italy. Although he never learned to use a computer himself, he made sure his daughters did and later marveled at the way we could conjure information on any topic from our handheld computer phones.
Raffaele’s home was truly his castle. He was proud of his ability to provide a safe and comfortable place for his family and to have this place in Brighton to call his own where he would live out so many days. He brought his farming skills to Brighton, using every available inch of land he had to create an annual harvest worthy of any farmers’ market. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and generations of neighbors on his front porch. He will be missed.
Visiting Hours at the Lehman Reen & McNamara Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill Ave, Brighton on Wednesday March 30 from 5PM to 8PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday March 31 at 10AM at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA. Interment will take place immediately after in Newton Cemetery & Arboretum, 791 Walnut St., Newton Centre, MA.
