Clara Rochon - August 26, 1931 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: On the morning of May 4, 2024, Clara Rochon, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Clara lived a long and full life for over 92 years. She kept herself physically and mentally active and was surprised by a recent cancer diagnosis. But in the face of terminal illness, Clara was determined to continue to live her life and not wait around to die. She immediately booked a flight to Las Vegas where she played bingo and slot machines with her long-time partner, Henry Williams. At the end of three weeks, Clara returned home to put her affairs in order, spend time with her family and play bingo again until she could play no more. Every night she played, she was joined by family, sometimes up to two dozen deep at the bingo parlor. We rarely won, but we were already rich in love and in the presence of our beloved Clara. To us, the loss of her was inconceivable and we spent every moment with her that we could, whether it was playing bingo, having family dinners and get-togethers or just bringing any food or treat she wanted. We lost our matriarch, but she leaves behind a rich history and long line descendants.
Clara Rochon was born on August 26, 1931, in Manila, Philippines to Zosimo dela Cruz and Feliza Miranda. Clara was the second of four daughters born to Zosimo and Feliza, including her Ate (elder sister) Dora; younger sisters, Teresita and Jeanette. Clara has four additional siblings, including: Josefina Dela Cruz, Evelyn Duncan, Benjamin Dela Cruz and Edilberto Dela Cruz. She spent her childhood and most of her young adult life in the Philippines where she raised four daughters, Mercy, Dolores, Linda and Ettajane (“Gigi”) as a single mother. Clara met Greg Rochon, Sr. while he was stationed in the Philippines, and they were married shortly after. Greg Sr. adopted Clara’s daughters and together, they had three more children, Maude, Francis (“Frank”) and Gregory. They moved to the United States in 1967 where they lived in several different states as a military family. Eventually, Clara set roots in San Diego, California where she worked as a master seamstress and restaurant hostess, and finally opening a successful Filipino restaurant called the Tipanan.
While the marriage did not last, Clara and Greg Sr. remained close friends and raised their children together. Clara was always chasing opportunity, no matter where it led her. This ambition brought her to Kodiak, Alaska in the mid-70s where she worked in a cannery with several other pioneering Filipinos who chose to make Alaska their home. It was in Kodiak where she learned of the ultimate opportunity even further north above the arctic circle in Barrow. Oil flowing through the new Alaska Pipeline had created jobs opportunities for brave and enterprising individuals who could adapt to an unforgiving arctic climate and a different way of life. Clara set the path and one by one, her children followed her. Eventually, Barrow became home to Clara’s children and grandchildren.
Clara worked many jobs throughout her lifetime, sometimes two or three jobs at the same time. Her greatest joy came from working for herself. Besides the Tipanan in San Diego, her other businesses included The Stop Shop and Ice Cream Parlor in Barrow and Clara’s Clothing when she moved to Anchorage. Clara loved to sew and create outfits for her many grandchildren. She even handmade an entire trousseau of flower girl dresses for her granddaughter’s wedding. Clara slowed down a bit in her later years, still sewing occasionally but mostly enjoying time at her trailer doing gardening and home improvements during the warmer Alaskan months. During the winter, Clara was a snowbird with Henry, spending time driving in their motor home between Oklahoma, Las Vegas and California. She also enjoyed visiting family in Hawaii.
Clara Rochon was preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild and she leaves behind her seven children, 27 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. The legacy she leaves behind are the virtues she instilled in all of us: self-determination, courage to try new things, strong work ethic and a strong sense of self-worth. She loved all of us equally and saw each of us for our unique talents and abilities. She expected nothing but the best from us because we are cut from the finest cloth. We are Clara’s Kids.

She passed along a deep love for family to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Monetta moved with her family to Bakersfield, CA when she was 5 years old. She had an adventurous spirit and had many tales of long adventures with her siblings in the hills and around Kern river in Bakersfield, CA. After marrying her high school sweetheart in 1959, this sense of adventure brought Monetta to Alaska in 1960. What was meant to be one year turned into almost 64 years of living in Alaska. First, in Kenai and Soldotna, then moving to Anchorage in 1965. Monetta loved Alaska and was always willing to take her children camping, boating and fishing. An avid journaler, Monetta captured many of these adventures in writing, chronicling her many trips up and down the Al-Can Highway and outings with her children.
Monetta was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She started working in the Anchorage, Alaska temple soon after its dedication in 1999. She was also blessed to serve on two missions. Monetta and Allen served a 2-year mission in Alabama and Mississippi. Throughout this mission, Monetta and her husband worked on preserving old documents for use in genealogical work, which was a great passion of hers. Monetta spent many hours working on her own genealogy and volunteered her time making documents available for others to do their genealogical work. She and Allen also served a mission at home in Anchorage Alaska at the LDS Employment Center. Monetta felt blessed that she was able to serve the lord in all of these roles.
Monetta owned Asay Trucking, Inc. with her husband and was very involved in the operation and management of the business. Calvin LeRoy Wilson - September 19, 1952 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Calvin (Cal) LeRoy Wilson, beloved father, son, brother and friend made his last cast on Thursday, March 28th, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones in Anchorage, Alaska. Born on September 19th, 1952, to Velda and Harold Wilson in Red Cloud, Nebraska.
Raised alongside his younger brother, Ronnie (Ron) Wilson, in Fort Collins, Colorado, Cal excelled both in athletics and academics. As a student athlete, he participated in football, baseball, basketball, track and field, and somehow found time for 4H where he won numerous awards before graduating from Poudre High School in 1971. While in high school, he also worked in the Emergency Room, where he became passionate about helping people, so he left home to attend Colorado Mesa University, in Grand Junction, Colorado to become a doctor. Looking for an adventure while on summer break in 1974, he left for Alaska to work construction, only to fall in love with the Last Frontier and to call it home for the next 50 years.
After living life to its fullest throughout the remainder of the ‘70’s, Cal married and had his only child in June of 1983 with Elizabeth (Beth) Claiborne. Although the marriage didn’t work out, they shared a special bond with their son, Ian Wilson, and would become best friends in their later years.
Cal’s love for people was one of a kind, and he had cast a wide net over the years that brought in all walks of life. Now as a single parent, he now had a side kick! I’m willing to bet it helped with the ladies… but more importantly, he now had his proudest accomplishment by his side. Whether it was skiing together down at Alyeska, fishing on the Kenai or smashing some eggs benedict on a Sunday F St. Station, he was always proud and happy to be a father.
Cal had found his niche in sales. He loved to fish, so naturally found himself in the seafood industry early on, whether it was working for 10th & M or going out on his own and starting up his own business. As Ian grew up, so did the tab for his hockey. So, Cal shifted gears and started his next chapter of his sales career in the car industry.
If he wasn’t at work or at the rink during hockey season, you’d most likely find him tearing up the slopes in the winter, tying the perfect knot and fishing on the Kenai in the summer, or making new friends down at F St year-round.
Cal Wilson has been preceded in death by his father Harold Wilson, Grandparents Daniel and Emma (Ring) Baker, Clyde and Ora (Keatley) Wilson, Aunts and Uncles, and his best friend Jim Christy.
Cal leaves behind his son and pride and joy, Ian Wilson. He is survived by his mother Velda Wilson, brother and sister-in-law Ron and Belinda Wilson, nephews Curtis, Jake and Ryan, brother from another mother Richard Skelton and countless friends who loved and adored him. Although he may not be here to call us on every birthday, he will forever be in our hearts and spirit. His love was genuine, and he truly cared about everyone in his life.
Stay tuned, as we will have a service for Cal in May and a celebration of life in June or July.

She enjoyed all the teams she worked with; the AHA Northstars, the Boy’s snd Girl's Club Bulldogs, and the Alaska Firebirds. She was at the rink so often she ended up serving as Vice President of the Anchorage Hockey Association.
Upon retiring from the daycare business she decided to fill her day with a job at Walmart. That turned into a long career where she was awarded Employee of the Month too many times to count. She made many friends in her time there and it proved to be a fun and rewarding experience.
Susan’s greatest joy was her storybook romance with her husband Larry. They had many adventures together; riding their motorcycles around Oregon, making the big move to Alaska, raising their active kids, and enjoying time with their crazy little grandkids. After a beautiful long 52 year marriage they were still madly in love. Susan always said that they were made for each other.
She is survived by her husband Larry Nicholas, her son Vinton John Nicholas, daughter in law Susy Nicholas, her daughter Jennie Faraci, son in law Peter Faraci, her four grandchildren, Anna and Penny Nicholas, and Nicholas and Samantha Faraci, her sister Janna Kinkade and her brother John Kinkade as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Elizabeth Mary Maciariello - May 31, 1930 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Mary Maciariello, nee Glaub, died peacefully while surrounded by family on 2/18/24 in Anchorage, Alaska. She was born 5/31/1930 in Breese, Illinois and like many of her generation, saw the world change greatly in her near century on earth. Born during the Great Depression to Harry and Elizabeth Glaub, the eleventh of thirteen children, she watched her brothers leave to fight in World War II, and then met a young Air Force soldier named Mac at Scott Air Force Base after the war. They married, had seven children, and though they divorced in 1982 they remained friends until his passing in 2013. They made their homes in Illinois, Delaware, and finally Alaska, arriving in 1962 after she urged him to take the job offered up here even though they couldn’t find King Salmon on any map.
She worked for American Greetings, but her true calling was being a wife and mother and keeping a beautiful home. She was the one everyone called when they needed something: Girl Scout leader, school volunteer, costume sewer, backstage mom. Her home was always open to all who needed a place and many of our friends called her their second Mom. She was the biggest cheerleader, always; she watched us bowl, dance, play sports, spelling bees, you name it and she was there. She had a quick and clever sense of humor (even if it made us roll our eyes occasionally!) and a lot of common sense and working knowledge of the world. She was involved in all our lives, right up to the end, though dementia had started to steal corners of her life from her, and us. She had that “never surrender” streak in her soul that she passed on to us.
She enjoyed being part of her grandkids’ lives, going to games, motocross races, bowling, and most recently her great grandchildren’s football and hockey games. She did beautiful needlepoint and worked the newspaper’s word find and crossword every day.

Tyrone Elmo Powell - February 23, 1937 - January 09, 2024

Departed: 01/09/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Tyrone Elmo Powell, beloved father, husband, grandfather passed away peacefully in Tucson, AZ on January 9, 2024. He was 86 years old. Ty was preceded in death by his great love, his wife, Roberta Elizabeth Brown Powell, to whom he was married for 51 years.
Tyrone is survived by three sons Mark, Craig (Corryn) and Bruce (Lissa) Powell and four grandchildren, Tyler, Reece, Austin and Aubrey.
Tyrone was born in Winnsboro, Louisiana on February 23, 1937. He and his parents moved to Anchorage, Alaska in the bitterly cold month of February in 1954.
Ty, as he was called by family and friends, was raised in a family of modest means; he was hard working and largely self educated and was, through perseverance, able to elevate himself to a professional position with State Farm Insurance. He ran his own agency for 31 years and received several awards for his service. Ty never forgot his modest upbringing and helped many others along their paths to success.
Ty had an innate creativity and by putting his imagination to work was able to attain two patents, one of which was Hole Shot, a drag strip amusement ride using electric motor propulsion for race cars. Ty loved coaching youth baseball and took the 1974 Nunaka Valley All Star Team to the Western Regional Finals in San Bernardino, California. However, Ty's real love was always his family. He worked hard to support them and encouraged, especially his grandchildren, to find work that satisfied them and shared all that he had learned during his life and in his professional career.
Ty was a man who listened to and understood others; he was eager to assist others in fixing almost anything, all the while sharing his unbiased advice and views on the subject at hand. After the love of his life, Roberta died, he assumed the role of grandpa with enthusiasm.
In his earlier years, Ty played football at the original Anchorage High School. He excelled playing tight end, but his best catch was the adorable cheerleader who he was smitten by, and later became his wife and life long companion in 1958.
Ty continued to enjoy sports all of his life. He played golf, loved sport cars, and cheered on his beloved Arizona Wildcat teams with passion.
Ty loved to travel to his roots in the south and Louisiana in particular. He enjoyed exploring his interest in Antebellum houses, had fun at the Mayhaw Jelly festival's and explored his family roots, especially the Powell family who settled in Marion Louisiana in the 1800's. While in Marion, Ty visited the graveyard where his great, great grandfather Powell was buried. The inscription on the grave marker was barely visible, so Ty replaced it with a new one to proudly mark the site.
Ty had a passion for Starbucks coffee, especially that Venti Triple Shot Latte' with whole milk, no foam, no room at the top. If he had a piece of lemon bread with that, it simply made his day. When he and Roberta had visited the Bake Shop in Girdwood, Alaska the cinnamon rolls and sourdough pancakes were their favorites.
He chose the Bible verse, Timothy 4:7. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” He died as he lived, a strong spirited man, a faithful Christian, with a zest for life. We will all miss him.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Anchorage Alaska, in the summer of 2024 at the Angelus Memorial Park. Time and date to be announced.
