Obituary Preview: Garey Dysart McKee, age 84, of Benton, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:36 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2022.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 11,2022 at the First Baptist Church of Benton, with Rev. Jim Jenkel officiating. Burial will follow in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Benton, Illinois.
Arrangements are with the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.
Garey was born on April 27, 1937, in Columbia, Missouri; the son of Albert F. McKee and Helen (Shackleford) McKee. He first married the former Anita Cecilia Dickson on February 2, 1957, together they shared 34 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on March 13, 1991. He would later marry Dora McCalla in 1993 and she preceded him in death in 2001. On May 25, 2002, he married the former Sharon (West) Parkhill; together they were married for 18 years until her death on February 18, 2020.
Garey served his country in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1963, stationed in Baltimore, Maryland.
He completed his college education and received a master’s degree in history from the University of Delaware.
He retired from General Motors Company where he last worked as a purchasing agent in the Northeast United States. Garey was also a former Archeologist.
He was an active member, Deacon, and Sunday School Teacher at the First Baptist Church of Benton. He loved his church and church family.
Garey also enjoyed archeology, geology, genealogy, history, carpentry work, gardening and doing anything outdoors pertaining to yard work. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family. He was also the Membership Chairman for the Franklin County Arts Association.
Surviving are his four children: Heathir McKee of Enumclaw, Washington, Dierdre McKee of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jason McKee of Townsend, Delaware, and Garey McKee of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sherry’s two children: Danny Parkhill and wife Tammy of Benton,  Jennifer Keener and husband Jeff of Benton; grandchildren: Jeffrey Donahe, Anita Donahe, Sean Moran, Nathan Davis, Dustin Parkhill, Brandy Trogolo, Andy Johnson; great-grandchildren: Serenity Parkhill, Adrien Parkhill, Kennedy Parkhill, Brecken Johnson, Forrest Johnson, Hattie Parkhill, Brooklyn Parkhill, Avey Parkhill, Carley Schmidt, Megan Davis and Tobias Davis; a step-brother Donald Cunningham of Booneville, Missouri.
Mr. McKee was preceded in death by his parents; three wives; and a sister Dorothy Tracy.

Thomas Eugene Smith was born on April 6, 1953, in Benton, IL, the son of Everett Smith and Lucille (Irby) Smith.
He was a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Benton.
Years ago, he formerly worked as a laborer at the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton.
Tom enjoyed attending and cheering for the Benton Ranger's Basketball team.
Surviving are two brothers: Robert Smith of Desloge, MO, Rev. John Smith and wife Sherry of Springfield, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

Dale was born on December 2, 1949, in Christopher, Illinois; the son of Harry Wingo and Ethel (Eckels) Wingo. He married the former Ethel Diania (Ison) Braden on June 10, 2007, and she survives.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War where he received a Bronze Star Medal and 2 Army Commendation Medals.
He was a retired coal miner having last worked at Old Ben #24. He was a proud member of the U.M.W.A.
Dale loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, and riding horses.
He is survived by his loving wife Diania Wingo of Benton; two sons: Jeff Wingo and wife Melissa of Bonnie, IL, John Wingo and wife Trisha of Johnston City, IL; three step-children: Adam Braden and wife Kimberly of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Lori Braden of Knoxville, TN, Christopher Braden of Houma, LA; twelve grandchildren: Dala Wingo, Breana Wingo, Kassi Ing, Kelsi Wingo, Kali Wagers, Allison Baker, Alec Wingo, Daniel Braden, Shai Austin, Michaela Austin, Tressa McCosker, Asher Braden; twelve great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and their families.

Obituary Preview: Norma Jane Page, of Ewing, Illinois, passed this life and entered her eternal home on March 26, 2022, at 2:00 a.m. at Franklin Hospital with her family by her side.          Norma was born December 21, 1930, to Ralph Marcus Smith and Serena “Pearl” Carlton Smith in Gary, Indiana. She married William “Thurmond” Page on June 29, 1951. Together Thurmond and Norma enjoyed 57 years together building their family farm until he died in 2009. She was owner/manager of the H & R Block franchise in Benton for 42 years. Norma was named Franklin County Farmwife of the Year in 1978. Norma was active in the 4-H as a member and a 4-H Club Leader. She was a member of Benton First Free Will Baptist Church, charter member of the Macedonia Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #1028; and assisted with the summer lunch program at the Benton Ministerial Alliance.           Norma was the third oldest of nine children. Those surviving include Robert C. Smith (Lorene) of Royalton, Joyce Thomas (Bob) Thomas of West Frankfort, Linda Akerman (Dr. Lou) of Silverdale, WA, Jack Smith (Frances) of Benton, and sister-in-law Virginia Smith of Whittington.          Norma is survived by her five children: Robert Ray Page (Janice) of Benton, Jean Ann Chamness of West Frankfort, Jane Ellen Page of Mt. Vernon, Patricia Lynn Wilson (David) of Benton, and John Kendall Page (Tanya) of Benton.         Sixteen grandchildren survive: Robert “Brandon” Page of Chesterfield, MO, Bradley Thomas (Monica) of Benton, Ashley Kern (Travis) of Thompsonville, Dr. Allison Schumacher (Dr. Charles) of Effingham, Garrett Thomas (Meghan) of Highland, Curtis Wilson (Kristen) of DuQuoin, Sarah Hutchcraft (Gideon) of Pinckneyville, Brice Wilson of Benton, Jacob Page (Stephanie) of Benton, Quinton Wilson of Benton, Austin Thomas (Michelle) of Carbondale, Emalee Watkins (Jeremy) of Benton, Emily McKinney of Christopher, Erin Page of Bluford, Kelsey Page of Benton, Logan Page of Benton.

Burial will follow in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022, at the Leffler Funeral Home.
Kathy's family requests that all attending the visitation and funeral to wear a mask to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and to protect the family and yourself from this terrible disease that took Kathy's life.   Masks will be provided at the funeral home and required to be worn at all times while at her services.
Kathy was born on November 25, 1960, in St. Clair County, Illinois; the daughter of Braxton Eugene Neuenschwander and Joann (Hutchcraft) Neuenschwander. She married David Dean Ezell on April 9, 1979, and he survives.
She was the head cook at Benton Grade School District #47 in the K-4 building. Her family said, “she enjoyed her job”.
Kathy enjoyed decorating her home, riding the side by side with her husband, drinking margueritas with her son, and shopping with her daughter.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving is her loving husband of 42 years, David Dean Ezell of Benton; a daughter Melissa Ann (Ezell) Borrini and husband Anthony of Iowa Colony, TX; a son Matthew Dean Ezell of Benton; her mother Joann Neuenschwander of Benton; a sister Lorna McNinch and husband Pat of Stillman Valley, IL; a half-sister Linda Hickam of Troy, IL; an uncle: Gary Hutchcraft and wife Brenda of Macedonia, IL; her dog Missy Moo; and several nieces and nephews.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Hamline was a retired coalminer, having last worked at Freeman United Coal Mine #3. He was a member of the UMWA.
Martin enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his 4 wheeler. Most of all he enjoyed his time spent with his kids and their families, and the annual cookouts and doughnut fry.
Surviving are five children: Mary Arview and husband Elva “Toot” of Thompsonville, Gayla Morgan of Thompsonville, Tammy Parkhill and husband Raymond of Thompsonville, Raenita Gunter and husband Jack of Thompsonville, Charles Hamline and wife Stacy of West Frankfort; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; lifelong friends: Russell “Shaggy” Browning of West Frankfort, Barbara Evans of Benton, and the late Cotton Hargis of Buckner; and several nieces and nephews.

James enjoyed fishing, gardening, dancing, listening to music, playing cards, and working on cars. He was known throughout Benton for his tomatoes, and his tomato stand at his home.
Jim wanted it to be known that he loved his family more than anything.

Laverne was born on October 1, 1950, in Benton, Illinois, the daughter of Clyde Ceford Dillon and Alice Elizabeth (Summers) Dillon.  She would marry Thomas Vaughn and he preceded her in death.
She was a caregiver; and enjoyed driving around Rend Lake with her sister looking for and counting deer. She loved to collect cookie jars and Indian artifacts; she loved decorating for Halloween and Christmas; she enjoyed watching The Hallmark Channel; she was an avid Chicago Cubs fan; but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving is her loving daughter Tina Taylor of Benton, IL; three grandchildren: Christopher Michael Schofield, Justin Dean Schofield, and Matthew Quintin Schofield, all three of Mt. Vernon, IL; two great-grandchildren: Sabrina Allison Noel Schofield and Roman David Schofield; two sisters: Kay Dudley and Carol Jean Easley, both of Benton, IL; a brother David Dillon of Benton, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Ralph Edward Smith, age 86, of Whittington; went home, from the Marion VA Medical Center, to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven at 10:15 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2022.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon Monday, February 21, 2022, at the First Christian Church of Benton with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton, with Thompsonville American Legion Post #1194 and the U.S. Army Honor Squad from the Marion National Guard Armory. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Monday, at the First Christian Church, 302 South Main Street, Benton, IL 62812. Arrangements are through the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.
Ralph was born on August 25, 1935, in Franklin County, Illinois, the son of Ralph M. Smith and Pearl (Carlton) Smith. He married the former Virginia Ethel Jones on March 9, 1958; and they were just shy of sharing 64 years of marriage together.
Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Army from January 25, 1955, to January 25, 1957.
He was a self-employed owner & operator of Smith Farms of Whittington. Ralph was ready to serve and lend a helping hand through his volunteering to numerous organizations, including: Director of the Farm Services Board, Farm Bureau Director, Past-President of the Benton Kiwanis, BCHS District 103 School Board Member, past Ewing Township Supervisor, Volunteer Fireman with the Ewing-Northern Fire Protection District, Thompsonville American Legion Post #1194, CASA Advocate, 4H Leader and Supporter, Hospice Volunteer, past Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, Parade Marshal for Farm City Days 2018. He and his wife Virginia together for 23 years were foster parents to numerous children. He was a devoted Christian, and this was proven through his dedication and membership of 60 plus years with the First Christian Church of Benton. Over the years he served his church in various capacities including Elder, Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and was known as “King Apple Butter.”
Ralph enjoyed attending Sulky Harness Races. He had a love for horses. Ralph enjoyed cooking and use to cook the chickens at the Whittington Gun Creek Days, also he could be found cooking at the Kiwanis Pancake Days and Spring BBQs, and Men’s Breakfasts at the First Christian Church. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving is his loving wife Virginia Smith of Whittington; his three children: Ralph Duane Smith and wife Debbie of Whittington, Darla Kay Brachear and husband Mike of Benton, Darrell Eugene Smith and wife Cindy of Whittington; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; siblings: Norma Page of Ewing, Robert Smith and wife Lorene of Royalton, Linda Ackerman and husband Lou of Tucson, AZ, Joyce Thomas and husband Bob of West Frankfort, Jack Smith and wife Frances of Benton; several loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Mary Schwind, Fay Krapf, Martha VanDyke.

Ruth was born on September 27, 1928, in Benton, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Omer Upchurch and Ila (Spencer) Upchurch. She first married Guy Floro and he preceded her in death. Twelve years after Guy’s passing, she married Floyd Morgan, he too, preceded her in death.
She was a former Benton American Legion Auxiliary Member, she kept her dues paid until just recently, when her health was declining.
Surviving are two children: Lycia (Floro) Hall of West Frankfort, IL, Adam Floro of Carbondale, IL; a stepdaughter Pam (Morgan) Tippett of Bonnie, IL; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two sons: Ward Floro and Spencer Floro; a daughter Laraine Floro; and a brother Ernest Upchurch.

Stephen Wayne Chadwell was born on December 28, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois; the son of Herbert Alwayne Chadwell and Cecelia (Savka) Chadwell. He married the former Teresa Anne Snethen on October 19, 1972, and she survives.
He worked as a manufacturing engineer for 34 years with S & C Electric of Chicago.
Mr. Chadwell was a 46-year member of the Constellation Lodge # 0974 A.F. & A.M. of Wheeling, Illinois.
He enjoyed traveling out West, visiting the Grand Canyon, as well as raveling to Alaska. He also, was a former Captain on a charter boat on Lake Michigan, and he and his wife formerly owned and operated Lorraine’s Lounge in Chicago.
Surviving is his loving wife Teresa Anne Chadwell of Thompsonville, IL; a son Stephen Herbert Chadwell and wife Adriana of Gilbert, AZ;  a step-daughter Daisy Flores and husband Paul of Thompsonville, IL; four grandchildren: Stephen Wayne Chadwell, II of Gilbert, AZ, Devin Jesus Chadwell of Chicago, Diego and Daniel Rivera both of Chicago; a brother Joseph Allen Chadwell and wife Margaret of Darien, IL; a step-sister Brenda Lynam and husband Ken of Corbin, KY; step-mother Lorene Kendrick of Corbin, KY; nephews and nieces including: Scott Chadwell, Wendy Chadwell, Shawn Lynam and wife Jennifer, Ken Lynam, Lisa Yunger and husband Keith.

Charles Woodrow Briley was born on October 2, 1941, in Benton, Illinois; the son of Cecil Briley and Idalia (Hicks) Briley. He married the former Lela M. Pedigo on October 21, 1962, and she preceded him in death on September 19, 2013.
Charles was formerly worked in the coal mines until he received a career ending injury and became disabled.
He was a member of the Tamaroa Independent Pentecostal Church.
Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting, Cubs baseball; but most of all, enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids.

Don served his country in the U.S. Army from January 10, 1962, to December 31, 1967.
He was a retired tree trimmer for Asplundh Tree Experts, contracted through ComEd, where he worked for 46 years. He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local #9.
Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, cracking jokes, watching Westerns; most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mary Alice was born on October 12, 1942, the daughter of Herman Jones and Ada Pearl (Kelley) Jones. She married Henry Edwin “Sunny” Sims on September 2, 1962, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 2011.
She was well known throughout the community. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Having worked as a schoolteacher with Christopher Elementary School, a substitute teacher at Benton High School and Benton Grade School, Librarian at Rend Lake College, and formerly worked as a supervisor for homes with the Developedly Disabled.
Mary Alice enjoyed people, and this was shown through her dedication and involvement with the local Girl Scouts. She was a Gold Member of the Girl Scouts, and through dedication and involvement as a Girl Scout volunteer; she received the Girl Scouts Life-Time Achievement Award; of which she was immensely proud.
Before her health declined, she attended the Palestine Baptist Church, was an active member of the Franklin County Historical Society, former Board Member with the Benton Public Library.
Mary Alice enjoyed going to Celtic Festivals, Astrology, Genealogy, attending Active Day in Marion, and enjoyed flower gardening.
She is survived by a daughter Jennifer Sims and husband Jeff George of Whittington; a son Kelley Sims and wife Ginger Farmer-Sims of Christopher; two grandsons: Joshua George and Justin Wagoner; a brother G.W. Jones of Benton; and a niece Chy Ann Jones of Carterville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother Paul Jones.

Obituary Preview: James Ronald “Jim” Heifner, age 83, of Thompsonville, passed away at 10:48 a.m. Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Franklin Hospital of Benton.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2022, at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Elder Willie Huffine officiating. Burial with Military Honors provided by the Thompsonville American Legion Post #1194 and the Army National Guard, will be in the Brady Cemetery East of Akin. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the funeral hour at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.
James Ronald Heifner was born in Hamilton County, Illinois on July 17, 1938; the son of William Martin Heifner and Ida Mae (Poynor) Heifner.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving from 1961 to 1963, spending most of that time in Thailand.
He married Patricia Ann Flannigan on June 17, 1967, at Plasters Grove Free Will Baptist Church, and she survives. They had two children, Cynthia Ann Heifner Biggs and James Martin Heifner, both of Akin. He also leaves behind three cherished granddaughters Payeton Heifner, Harley Heifner, and Brooke Biggs. He was also blessed with one great-grandson Dramir Haskins.
Jim is survived by a sister, Darlene Roberts of Dale, Illinois; and was preceded in death by a brother Charles, who died as an infant; a sister Barbara Wyant; brothers John Heifner, and Carlton Heifner. He was very close to his siblings who lived near most of his life. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Plasters Grove Free Will Baptist Church for 47 years, where he became a Trustee and Deacon.
Jim made a living as a coal miner and working in the oil fields and construction.
He was a member of the Thompsonville American Legion Post #1194 and the Akin Masonic Lodge # 749 of Thompsonville. He was also a Caretaker and on the Board of Trustees for Brady Cemetery, and at one time Eastern Township Trustee and Republican Precinct Committeeman.
He enjoyed collecting antiques and “trading” with friends. Most of all he loved visiting with family and friends whether it was drinking coffee in Thompsonville, fellowship at his church or just at home. He will be remembered as a devoted family man and good friend to many.

Her working career consisted of working in a dry-cleaning plant in Taylorville, IL, waitress, laborer with American Can Company, cleaned houses, worked with the Franklin County Senior Services at the West Frankfort Wit and Wisdom Center, and she was a cosmetologist.
She was a member of the Logan Church of God, where she formerly served as a Sunday School Teacher, and Church Clerk.
Thelma enjoyed sewing, most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving is her three children: Loretta Rice and husband Steve of Logan, IL, Jack D. Smothers of Logan, IL, Lisa Morse and husband Zandle and son Tyler of Buncombe, IL; five grandchildren: Melissa Coons, James Pense and wife Chrystal, Paula Coons Arpasi and husband Thomas, Daniel Rice, Chloe Morse; three great-grandchildren: Kaven, Aubrie and Mia; a sister Gena Clark and husband Jack of Monroe, TN; a brother: Raymond Eads and wife Janice of Livingston, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2022, at the West City Church of God, with Rev. Harol Whitlock officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, at the West City Church of God. Arrangements are through the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.
Al was born on June 30, 1940, in Centralia, IL, the son of Albert James Babb and Myra (Rainey) Babb. He married the former Martha Ann Wimberly on November 20, 1959, and she survives.
He was a retired painter, former owner/operator of Reabans Drive-in which he later changed the name to Al’s Drive-in, of Benton. He also was a former coal miner.
Mr. Babb was a member of the West City Church of God.
Al enjoyed home improvement projects for his family, working in general; but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Martha Ann Babb of West Frankfort, IL; three children: Jeff Babb and wife Denise of Harrisburg, PA, Dara Barnes and husband Shane of Fort Worth, TX, Amy Dollins and husband Mike of Benton, IL; eight grandchildren: Destiny Babb, Bethany Jackson and husband Spencer, Caleb Babb, Lydia Mellenger and husband Ethan, Shae Pendleton and husband Drew, Zach Barnes and wife Brittany, Michaela Montgomery and husband Ethan, MacKenzi Dollins; four great-grandchildren: Graeson Barnes, Everhett Barnes, Allistair Barnes, Caden Pendleton; a brother David Babb and wife Norma of Indianapolis, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
