Anthony Benedict Hinners - April 23, 1963 - April 09, 2022

Departed: 04/09/2022 (Manson)
Obituary Preview: Anthony (Tony) Benedict Hinners was born April 23rd, 1963. He was the 7th child of Kenneth and Katherine (Benedict) Hinners. Tony attended school in Pomeroy and graduated with the Class of 1981. After high school, he graduated from Iowa Central Community College and went straight to Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He also acquired special certification in eye enucleation through the Iowa Donor Network.
From a young age, Tony had always wanted to be a funeral director and he held that title for over 30 years. He was respected by so many for his professionalism and took great pride in supporting others during their times of need.
When Tony wasn’t working, he could be found driving around with any number of friends, brothers or children on the lookout for deer or an asparagus patch. He loved the outdoors and spent time smoking meat, fishing and hunting anything from turkeys to mushrooms. He spent countless hours showing Ethan all the best spots. Tony looked forward to the weekends spent hunting through every single season with his brothers.
No matter what Tony was doing, he was all in. He infused passion into every event, game, hobby, and conversation. He encouraged everyone to share in his passions. He was on the move constantly; Tony was also a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan and rarely watched a game sitting down.
Above all of his hobbies, Tony loved being with his family. Tony was the father of Abby, Anthony, Gavin, Ethan, Eve, and Ben including step-children, Josie (Matthew) and Michael (Elizabeth). Underneath his hard outer shell, he held an enormous amount of love for his children and grandchildren. Tony was excited for the arrival of each and every one of them. He was a protector whenever necessary and would do anything for them, no questions asked. He lived for each of them and treasured the times he spent on the floor roughhousing or lifting them up by his pinky.
Tony had an energy that made his presence known before he walked in the door. He had one volume, loud. He was obnoxious and thrived on being an instigator. He made it his mission to get a rise out of people, many times his sisters. Tony would be considered by many as a hands-on guy. From a firm handshake, to a pinch under your arm, or a claw gripping the back of your neck. His ways of showing others he cared about them usually came with immeasurable intensity. But these were the things that made Tony his own genuine self, and there will never be another like him. He left this world suddenly on April 9th, 2022 at the age of 58. He worked hard, played harder and loved deeply. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Tony is survived by his children: Abby, Anthony, Gavin, Ethan, Eve, and Ben; step-children, Josie and Michael; grandchildren: Ayden, Ollie, Bentley, Audrey, and Erabella; step-grandchildren: Camden, Josiah and Declan, Eliana, Ezriella and Michael Ezra; father, Kenneth Hinners; brothers: Mike Hinners, Tim (Barb) Hinners, Darren Hinners, Paul (Sonja) Hinners, and Brock (Janelle) Hinners; sisters: Kim (Mike) Hart, Stephanie (Chuck) Long, Sandi (Roger) Huster, Gabby (Doug) Hepperle, Kendra (Bryan) Williams, and Alicia (Kelsey) Staiert; countless nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Preceded in death by his mother, Katherine; infant twin siblings, Alfred and Angela; paternal and maternal grandparents.

James Rodger Gordon - May 07, 1937 - March 02, 2022

Departed: 03/02/2022 (Manson)
Obituary Preview: James Rodger Gordon of Manson, IA, passed away on March 2, 2022, at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 84. Visitation will be Monday, March 7, 2022, from 4 to 6:30 at the Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home in Manson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul American Lutheran Church with Reverend Peter Rosenkvist officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery with a luncheon following at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Jim was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on May 7, 1937. He grew up in Manson on the family farm with his parents, Roscoe and Thyra Gordon. As an only child, Jim started farming at the age of 13 when his father suffered a stroke. His mother always said that Jim had to become a man at a young age and lost a lot of his childhood. But Jim never felt that way because of his love for farming. After Jim’s graduation from Manson High School, he met Connie Marie Barnes. They were married May 17, 1959, and were blessed with two children, Katherine and Kevin. During this time, Jim became employed with the Illinois Central Railroad as an engineer. In later years, he often said he couldn’t wait to get to work because he loved running the engine and especially the people he worked with. Between farming and the railroad, Jim always made time to be a good husband and father. He retired from the railroad after 38 years and continued farming.
Jim’s mornings consisted of going to Cubby’s for breakfast and enjoying the company of friends while there. He rarely said where he was going, you would just see his vehicle drive down the lane. We all knew we’d see him again in 15 minutes to an hour later. Jim had a love for animals and would often call them “The Buttson’s”. He also had a love for sweets. If it was bad for you, he was probably eating it. Jim had a very big heart and always cared for people. He was quick to give and never expected anything in return.
Life was good, but we all know life can throw you some curves. In a few short years, Jim experienced many health issues. He suffered from kidney failure, cancer, a heart attack, and then lost the function of his new kidney through open heart surgery. Through all of this, Jim kept his sense of humor and remained a strong fighter.
Jim is survived by his wife Connie of Manson, IA, daughter Katherine Poppinga (David) of Boerne, TX, and son Kevin Gordon (Jen) of Gowrie, IA, and grandchildren Ashley Butler (Tony) of Spencer, IA, Andrew Adams of San Antonio, TX, Mason Gordon of Gowrie, IA, Justin Poppinga of Fort Worth, TX, Danielle Sibbitt of Fort Dodge, IA, Lincoln Sibbitt of St. Louis, MO and great grandchildren Brock and Hailee Butler of Spencer, IA.

Marilyn Ann Jud - March 13, 1932 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Manson)
Obituary Preview: “The earliest I can remember I was 3 years old when we lived in Richards, IA. My grandmother lived there about a block away. There was a grocery store & an elevator as the train went through on the edge of town a couple of blocks from our house.
A few years later we moved to the farm owned by Gus & Florence Gleason. The house was way above average – there were cloth sheets in different rooms up & downstairs.
My dad helped Gus farm for $1 a day & free rent. We had chickens & 1 cow we owned and Gus had cows in the pasture that we milked for him. I remember we had ducks & geese too. We had running water but we had to pump up this big pressure tank to get water to the faucets on both floors. About a year later one of the Groot farms became available for rent. It seems like it was 240 acres. We had a Case tractor and Dad purchased a John Deere tractor so mom could work in the field too. While I was out of school for the summer I took care of my sisters, Zadonna & Paulette, while Mom was farming with Dad. Many times, after the chores were done, it was off to Twin Lakes to fish & catch bullheads. We ate so many bullheads that I grew to dislike eating fish. Carl & I dated since the summer of my freshman year. We had free outdoor movies next to Carl’s parents (JUD) Hardware store on main street Knierim. There were three Taverns, a Barbershop, a Telephone office with a pay phone as you entered, a Lumber yard, a Bank building (which Bonnie & Clyde robbed) and there was a Hatchery & small Restaurant owned by Oscar & Myrtle George. “
Marilyn graduated from Somers High School in 1949. While in high school she was a proud member of the girl’s basketball team. Carl Jud & Marilyn Ramthun married on August 7, 1949 in Rockwell City and made their home in Knierim. While Carl worked for the railroad, Marilyn briefly worked at the local Knierim telephone switchboard before working at Friendship Haven for over 25 years. She purchased Berry Hearing Aid Center in 1978 where she worked until she retired.
Carl & Marilyn had three children: Carlette (Allen) Jud-Paulson, Rick (Coral) Jud & Bill (Nancy) Jud. Grandchildren, great grandchildren & great great grandchildren: Tony Paulson, Tameron & Bennett; Nicole (Jim) Payne, Merrick, Molly & Potter; Mike (Rachael) Jud, Danielle, Miranda & Nathan; Cindy (Brent) Mitchell, Logan, Quinn & Drake; Rich (Robin) Jud, Harlie, Hunter (Braden & Beckett) Moser, Holden & Heather; Cory (Tiffany) Jones, Dylan (Makayla Larson), Carter, Grayson & Brannaugh; Alex (Bret) Smith, Mia & Ledger; Gabe (Stephanie) Jones, Julia, Gavin & Braxton.
Marilyn was member of Trinity Lutheran Church @ Knierim. Faith, Family & Friends were what she cherished most. Marilyn's service can be viewed through live streaming at the Trinity Lutheran Facebook page: immanueltrinitylutheran

James Harvey Cunningham - October 02, 1929 - January 07, 2022

Departed: 01/07/2022 (Manson)
Obituary Preview: Two noteworthy events took place in October in 1929. First, James Harvey Cunningham was born on October 2nd to Mildred and James “Harry” Cunningham of Chicago, Illinois. Second, the stock market crashed and the baby’s life was forever shaped by The Great Depression. After his father died in 1934, Jimmy’s mother placed him in the Klingberg Children’s Home to be raised with a handful of similarly disadvantaged children. Five years later, Mildred met and married Christian Walter, a Manson, Iowa high school graduate. Jimmy lived with them in various Chicago apartments and hotel rooms until 1944 when, barely into his teen years, he said good-bye and moved to Manson. Throughout his junior high and high school years, young Jim slopped 150 head of hogs, fed 300 chickens, cared for a team of workhorses, planted and picked corn, put up hay, churned butter, and grew to love the hard work and stability he found on the George Hermann farm. For Jim, there was no challenge too large to conquer and no machine too broken to fix. After high school graduation in 1948, Jim began a pen pal relationship with a fellow children’s home alumnus, Dorisann Hill. They soon bonded over mutual experiences as “homekids” and their deeply rooted faith in Jesus Christ. The couple married in March 1951 and settled in Manson. Uncle Sam came calling the following year and Dorisann joined Jim in Salzburg, Austria, where he proudly served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps Camp Truscott Rail Operations Office. The Cunninghams returned in 1954, started a family, and began the never-ending task of refurbishing an historic home beside the railroad tracks on the west end of town. For the next 46 years, Jim spent his days printing calendars at The Dalton Press and his evenings and weekends were devoted to serving to the community he cherished. His various volunteer roles included Cub Scout Master for Pack 95; custodian for the United Church of Christ; member of numerous city and county boards; and officer positions with the VFW, American Legion, and Calhoun County Commission of Veteran Affairs. Jim retired from The Dalton Press in 1997 but he wasn’t ready for the rocking chair. He had already completed small-engine repair classes and an automobile restoration course at Iowa Central Community College, so he restored several antique cars. He previously finished a course in commercial truck driving, so he trained as an Emergency Medical Technician in order to serve with the Manson ambulance team. And when the United Church of Christ was unable to fill many open pastoral positions, he went back to school, completed his training, and at the age of 77 began preaching from the pulpit for more than a dozen years at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove. In his later years, Jim spent most of his time caring for Dorisann, and she for him. He found joy reading and writing poetry. He once ended a letter to his son, “Tie a little string around your finger so you’ll remember me. Any little thing to make me linger in your memory.” Jim Cunningham went home to the Lord on Friday, January 7, 2022 but he will forever linger in the memories of those he faithfully served and in the hearts of those who loved him. Friends and family are invited to “tie a little string around their finger” when they say good-bye at the visitation and funeral service. Services will be held at the United Church of Christ – Congregational in Manson on Thursday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 12:30 until service time. Facemasks are required, or livestreaming will be available at this website by clicking on the box at the bottom of the obituary. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson. Survivors include his wife Dorisann; their three children James (Lorna) Cunningham of Edgewater, MD; Robert (Cathy) Cunningham of West Des Moines, IA; Constance (Kevin) Hansen of Cedar Falls, IA; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and stepbrother Melvin Walter.

Born Leola Darlene Egli on August 27, 1925, Darlene grew up in Manson, IA, and still has deep family roots there. She brought into the world and shared her life freely with her four children, Bill Klotz (deceased), Connie Klotz of Minnetonka, MN; Ted Klotz of Chaska, MN; and Curt Klotz (spouse, Teresa) of Minneapolis, MN. Darlene’s long life was shared with three husbands, all of whom preceded her in death. Edward Klotz (formerly of Manson), with whom Darlene had her children. She purchased and ran the locally renowned Big Dipper Ice Cream Shop in Manson in the 1960s. In the same period, and ahead of her time, she won the “Man of the Year” award for sales in 1967 from Pioneer Insurance Company. Her family remembers with humor and exasperation the trophy with her name on it displaying the figure of a man holding a briefcase. Though her work ethic and business sense guided her well throughout her life, she also enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, dancing to big band swing, singing in the church choir and a women’s barbershop quartet, and watching sunsets on Spirit Lake.
