Vanessa was the daughter of Gilbert Wilson and Mary Hedgecock, though was raised by Mary and Mathew Bones; Mathew she considered to be her true father, although not by blood but rather by love. Vanessa loved and appreciated her parents very much, understanding the sacrifices, they made to make her younger life more comfortable. Vanessa had two older siblings, a brother Vincent, and a sister Vicky, and although she may not have shown it, she did truly love them, and would regret not telling how much she cared for them toward the end of her life. She lived her life primarily in Camden, New York, going to school and gaining a GED from Camden High School. Vanessa would be the first in her family to go on to college, at Onondaga Community College where she gained her associates degree in photography. She would work and travel around taking pictures of people and places until an injury at work prohibited her from continuing to do so. She would marry twice in her life; she remained with her second husband, David R. Edgerton, until her untimely death. Vanessa and David Edgerton would go on to have a son Travis M. Edgerton, who she was able to see graduate from Camden High School. David, who is a custom car builder, would often travel to car shows with Vanessa and Travis; it was a work they all enjoyed. Vanessa also loved to go to garage sales, she enjoyed walking about and coming home with trinkets and what have you. Vanessa would have cancer three times. She was in every regard a fighter. When she was sick, she would spend her time in forest pathways made by the family on their own property, or in one of her most favorite places in the world, Forest Park in Camden. She loved taking pictures of the wild flora and fauna there. People who knew Vanessa understood very clearly that she loved all animals, she always had a dog and/or a cat in her life. Vanessa was also an avid lover of butterflies, fairies, and birds, anything that could fly really. She would always try to help an injured bird or butterfly she found, and if she encountered a cocoon, she would take the time to ensure it was safe and protected. While she was sick, Vanessa’s son and husband would always support her and be with her when she needed them to be. While she was sick, she also confided in her friends, many of which she had since she was in high school. She had undying love and support in her life, which she tried to return back to the people who loved her. Vanessa did not want a funeral, making remarks that they are too sad, so the family will hold a celebration of life at a future date. If you knew her, the family requests that you do not send flowers, instead donate to any one of the animal shelters of the donor’s choosing, Vanessa would rather it have been done that way. Cathy J. Shannon - March 28, 1955 - June 21, 2022

Departed: 06/21/2022 (Camden)
Obituary Preview: Cathy J. Shannon was united in Heaven with her one true love, James R. Shannon, Sr on June 21st 2022. She truly was never the same after he lost his battle to cancer just over two years ago. Cathy was born on March 28, 1955 to Harold & Carole Watkins Closs in Lowville,NY. Beloved sister to Harold (Marlene) Closs, Jr., Camden, NY, Debbie (Jim) Moore, Florida, and Julie (Chuck) Mikitin, Taberg, NY. Cathy & Jim were united in marriage on July 28th 1973. They were the traditional blue-collar family… he worked as many hours as he could to provide for his family, and she took great pride in making sure that he always had a packed lunch for extra-long shifts and/or a hot meal waiting for him when he got home. Cathy & Jim raised two wonderful children… Kelly J (Mike) West, McConnellsville, NY and James R. Shannon, Jr., World traveler/Gypsy. Aside from her own kids, Cathy was “Mom” to many…one of Kelly’s childhood best friends, Denyel Miller spent as much time with Cathy as she did her own mother, also Florence DiGennaro Reed, who lived with Kelly and her family at the tail end of her high school years. You see, that was the thing about Cathy…she would always make sure that everyone felt special, welcomed and loved. I can recall many overnight stays with friends and close family/cousins, where we would all either sit around together watching scary movies while munching on endless snacks and drinks provided by “Mom” / “Aunt Cathy” or we’d listen intently as she loved to educate us all with her life’s lessons and words of wisdom. Kelly would go to upstairs to bed and leave everyone else downstairs, as she would easily bore listening to her mother go on and on …but, we never did ! I would be remiss if I failed to mention Cathy’s favorite little sidekick, her Jen Ben/Benny (niece, Jenny Shannon Kimball) who lived right next door, but probably spent more time with her favorite Aunt Cathy than her own mom ! Cathy was first and foremost a homemaker…but, did work locally at times throughout her life. Like the old Ren’s Store in McVille or local area medical offices as front desk receptionist. Cathy had a kind heart, a listening ear and a caring demeanor…which is why she was best suited for any customer service job, because she could easily strike up a conversation with anyone ! Her children and her grandchildren were her pride and joy, much like her husband Jim…they were her reason for living ! Sadly though, sometimes when a couple is prematurely separated by an unexpected passing…the other half just can’t seem to bare a life without the other. We have to believe that she was just lost without him … but, now they will be together for eternity ! Cathy was predeceased by her beloved parents and husband. She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren…Gage R. Mundell, Dakota W. West & fiance’ Delaney Alberico and Ryeland MJ West, many, many nieces, nephews, friends and family she gained through Jim. Funeral arrangementsunder the direction of LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY will be private. There will be no calling hours. Interment McConnellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Abraham House, 417 N. Washington St, Rome, NY. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Cathy J.
