Dorothy Sutherland - July 14, 1936 - September 12, 2023

Departed: 09/12/2023 (Tuckahoe)
Obituary Preview: Beloved Dorothy (Lihou) Sutherland passed away on September 12, 2023 at the age of 87. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Sutherland and son-in-law, Albert Butto, and the light of her life - her granddaughter, Mackenzie; sister Jean MacNaughton; brothers Bill, Alistair and John Lihou; their dear families and those of her departed sisters, Ann Corson and Esther Sutherland.
Dorothy Lihou grew up in Paisley, Scotland. The Sutherland family were friends of the Lihous and helped the Lihous emigrate to America in the 1960s. Afterwards, she went on to marry the love of her life, Alexander Sutherland, whom she had first met on his parent's Asker Farm in Scotland. Dorothy achieved her US citizenship, had two children and lived in Linwood NJ with her husband. Life was not easy; her husband was diagnosed with cancer and battled it for 15 years. Dorothy worked hard at her job at Prudential Insurance to provide for the family when his illness progressed. Dorothy also helped to care for her mother-in-law at home until her death. After her daughter married and moved to Cape May Court House, Dorothy moved too, and found a new joy helping to raise her granddaughter, Mackenzie. In 2021, Dorothy's health required a move to a nursing home, but she never stopped making friends (or working on her suntan).
Dorothy was an effortless beauty. At 15, she was entered into a beauty contest by her younger sister as a joke and went on to win. Music was Dorothy's joy and consolation, whether playing accordion with her siblings in their family band in Scotland, performing with her sister Jean in Southern NJ, or playing piano with her talented granddaughter. She was the kind of person that babies and animals adored, that people naturally liked, always looking for ways to help those who needed a hand. Dorothy had a strong spiritual connection and love of family which carried her through the many tough times.
