Tony Tuthill - June 10, 1975 - February 09, 2024

Departed: 02/09/2024 (Morrisville)
Obituary Preview: Tony Tuthill, born to Bill Tuthill and Ann Slayton on June 10, 1975, died suddenly on February 9, 2024.
The intent of this obituary is to offer another perspective of Tony, that his life had been so much more, filled with love, family and friends, and was not simply defined by addiction, despite it taking a terrible toll on him and all the ones who loved and cared for him.
Tony attended grade school in Hyde Park, VT and graduated from Lamoille Union High School 1993. In Tony’s younger days he showed considerable promise as a carpenter with his agile mind. Tony worked construction with his dad, for several years and K.A Harvey’s.
Tony was always smiling, had a wicked sense of humor; he was funny and smart and a constant teaser. Tony would always beat Jason at Atari and jigsaw puzzle assembly and wasn’t afraid to claim bragging rights. With his son Taryn he was often found shooting hoops, playing chess or card games, listening to music, tickling him and telling silly jokes. Tucker, Tony’s youngest, would cozy up with his dad while Tony read to him. One of Tony’s favorite things to do was to listen to country music and bluegrass.
Tony had a great circle of friends who were considered his “partners in crime”: Dan “Candyman” Bourdeau, Stevie Jones, Chad Graves “Vinnie”, Dana Bourdeau, Amy Magnan, Sara Griggs, Nathan Masi, Mike (Little Putty) Putvain, and, last but not least, David and Dennis Reen and the “Hyde Park Boys”.
Tony leaves behind so many, including his long-term partner Kristen Wilcox; sons Dylan Tuthill, Taryn and Tucker Tuthill; his devoted mother, Ann Slayton; his father Bill Tuthill and wife Carma Stark; his brother Jason and wife Gloria, daughter Tammy, his step-sister Aubrey Stark-Miller and his grandmother Ruth Tuthill. He was predeceased by his grandparents Wendall and Shirley Slayton and Bud Tuthill. Tony had special relationships with his grandmother Shirley Slayton, his only niece Tammy, cousin Kylee Bezio, Uncle Mike and Aunt Sue Bourdeau, as well as an expansively wide arc of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
It’s so remarkable how his life touched so many, and we are left with such a sense of loss and regret.
Though we don’t currently know what caused his death, it is reasonable to believe that his long-term substance abuse disorder, which eventually robbed him of his ability to choose a different path, was the ultimate cause.
There will be a memorial service on Sunday, February 18, 2024, 2:00 PM at Jenna’s Promise, 117 St Johns Rd, Johnson, VT 05656, with reception to follow.

Robert Alan Barton - June 10, 1949 - November 18, 2023

Departed: 11/18/2023 (Morrisville)
Obituary Preview: Robert Alan Barton, age 74, most recently of Morrisville and formerly of Madison, WI, passed away on the morning of November 18 at the UVM medical center. His was no long, courageous battle with cancer; it was a sudden and unexpected ambush, he died about a week after being diagnosed.
In his younger days, Rob was a stellar student at Peoples Academy, graduating at the top of his class. Then it was off to Cornell where he majored in mathematics and graduated in 1971. During that time he spent some summers as an intern at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. He also took a year off to work in NYC, fortuitously receiving a high number in the draft lottery that kept him out of Vietnam.
After a brief stint working at Social Security in Cairo, IL, he became a systems programmer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He remained there for the rest of his working life and lived at the same address for over 40 years.
When Rob was in his mid-40’s, he was found slumped at his desk at work, having suffered a stroke. From then on he lived with a disability, aphasia, a major impairment to his language abilities. He had difficulties with speech, usually speaking in single words or phrases. There were also problems with language comprehension, especially with proper nouns like geographical places or people’s names.
Those who knew Rob before his stroke would say he was extremely intelligent; he took advanced courses in mathematics and physics just for the fun of it. He studied languages on his own: German, Russian, and rudimentary Chinese. He traveled frequently, to places like Alaska, Europe, and Australia. Vegas was a common destination, he was a more-than-competent blackjack player and claimed he won more than he lost. He was also a savvy investor in the stock market and lived frugally.
Life with aphasia was an enormous change for Rob. Always an introvert, he now lived an even more internal life, and was not much for social interactions. He limited his travels mainly to family visits in Vermont. He could be stubborn and impatient, was often frustrated in making himself understood, his catch-phrases being “who knows,” “who cares,” and “maybe yes, maybe no.” Worse was when people assumed that because of his aphasia he was “stupid,” which was so far from the truth.
Still, he led a pretty good routine and simple life. He could be generous with his money and in 2000 bought a large, lakefront property in the Northeast Kingdom. Camp became the absolute center of our family life for six months every year, and Rob took yearly vacations to visit; two years ago he made the permanent move back to VT.
Rob enjoyed watching the lake and swimming, tracking the weather and lake temperatures, trips in the boat or to town, scrumptious meals at camp were the norm. He was expert at recognizing the cast members of classic movies, and was an aficionado of the 3 Stooges. He was a fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers, keeping a daily watch on their game results. Camp was where he had fun watching the next generation grow from children to adults, now with their own kids.
Robert is survived by his sisters Patti Morse and Ann Boyea, and brothers Tom, Jim, and Rick Barton. He had nine nephews and nieces, now ranging from their 20’s to their 50’s and spread throughout the east. At last count he had ten brilliant and joyful grandnephews and grandnieces, with another due in weeks. He was the absolute favorite of our Aunt Mary Barton from Brooklyn, recently deceased and the last of her generation.
If you had asked him if we might meet again in this universe or another, Rob’s answer would likely be “who knows?” We will all miss him at camp and in our lives. Pax vobiscum.

In 1957 he enlisted in the Rifle Brigade of the British Army for two years of National Service and was posted to Gambia. Peter began his working career with Cory Brothers in London. In 1969 he moved to Canada for what would be a life-long career working for Federal Commerce and Navigation (renamed Fednav Limited) based in Montreal. Peter retired in 1999 and moved permanently to the U.S. with his late wife, Jean. They resided in Quail Ridge Country Club, Fla., in the winters, and spent summer and fall in Stowe.
Peter was an enthusiastic rugby player, playing for Esher Rugby Club in England, and then for the Montreal Wanderers when he moved to Canada. He eventually had to retire from active play due to family and business travel, but even until shortly before he died, Peter, his brother Ken and Peter’s friend Carl in Cornwall would excitedly review recent high-profile matches. Peter was also a competitive tennis player. As Peter himself said, his moment of glory was when in 2005 his Vermont based men’s super-senior team “The Rusty Bolts” went on to win the National Championship in Kansas City. More recently he was a reluctant golfer, but being Peter, he loved the social gatherings surrounding all these sports.
After marrying Wendy, Peter continued to be the life and soul of the many cocktail parties and dinners that they would host for their friends. Peter developed an avid interest in being part of the Quail Ridge Choir during his years in Florida. He raised the level of the men’s tenor section with his usual gusto in making the best of what he offered, even better as he tried to learn to read music and took a series of private lessons to improve his sound. He looked forward to the annual concert held for family and friends in April and made many new friends during this pursuit of love of singing. Peter will be missed by all those whose lives he touched as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor.
