Obituary Preview: Frieda “Joy” Williams, 83, of Union Mills, passed away peacefully at 10:00 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2024, at home, surrounded by her family.
Joy was born on January 21, 1941, in Bayonne, New Jersey, to Arthur and Helen (Marga) Hirsch. She was raised in Jersey City and graduated Dickinson High School in 1959. On October 28, 1961, she married Douglas Wakefield Williams who preceded her in death. This marriage was blessed with five children.
For many years, Joy and her family lived in East Orange, New Jersey. She was a wonderful, loving mother and was a “second mom” to many kids in the inner-city neighborhood where she lived. The door to her home was always open. She was a maternal figure, whose nurturing, loving attributes, and wisdom had a strong and lasting impact in the lives of many in her community.
Joy believed that there was no other work more rewarding than service to others. She enjoyed volunteering for various schools and organizations. She also served as a den leader and den leader coach in the local Cub Scout pack.
Through her work with the cub scouts, she focused on projects that helped improve her neighborhood. She taught her children and scouts about the environment and conservation and always hoped that these lessons were carried with them through their lives. She formed a neighborhood block association and worked with neighbors and city officials to find solutions to various neighborhood problems. Joy worked as executive secretary for the New Jersey Division of the United Nations Association. This work helped her envision a better world for all people.
She helped support UNICEF activities to obtain financial relief and rehabilitation aid for flood victims overseas. She also worked with a non-profit educational organization, Global Learning, to provide resources and develop curriculum for sustainable development and conflict resolution.
In 1991, Joy and her family moved to a rural area in Union Mills, Indiana. Shortly after this move, her husband passed away, leaving her to provide for her three youngest children. Joy found employment in the communications department at Valparaiso University where she worked for 19 years as editor of Alumnotes, the university’s alumni magazine. During her time as the Alumnotes editor, she became known for her “fine eye” and “swift red pen”. Her wisdom, outgoing personality, quick wit, and sense of humor helped cultivate long lasting friendships with her colleagues. Joy truly lived up to her name and brought “JOY” to all she encountered.
Joy learned to appreciate the rural environment in Union Mills. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, communing with nature, yard work, and reading while sipping on a nice cup of tea. Joy also liked reconnecting and reminiscing with the people whose lives she influenced. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
