Obituary Preview: A service to celebrate the life of Joyce Ann Scalf Smith, 72, of Jacksonville, will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Holiness Church. Rev. Bruce Johnson and Rev. Josh Smith will be officiating. Joyce Ann will be laid to rest in Hillcrest Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday, March 11, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. Joyce Ann met her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 8, 2024
Preceding Joyce Ann in death are her parents, Roy and Treva Inez Scalf; her husband, Marvin “Lytel” Smith; her daughter, Nancy Jean Smith; her son, Anthony Lytel “Bubby” Smith; her brother, Anthony Ray Scalf (Wanda); and her brother-in-law, Billy Johnson.
Those left to cherish the memory of Joyce Ann are her beloved daughter, Treva Michelle Smith; her siblings, Brenda G. Johnson, Jeff Scalf (Julie), and Linda F. Ealy (Brian); a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family; very special friends, Linda and Margie; and her fur-baby, Beethoven.
Pallbearers will be Josh Smith, Gerald Keel, Justin Bufford, Chris Wilkerson, Ricky Newton, Nathaniel White, Nathan Greer, and Andrew Greer. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Pleasant Valley Holiness Church.
Joyce Ann was a devoted saint of God who dearly loved the Lord. She was a charter member of Pleasant Valley Holiness Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Joyce Ann had a true gift for children of all ages, loving them unconditionally. She was an avid storyteller, livening the hearts of every child who listened. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, whom she greatly adored, and she also loved to sing. Joyce Ann was selfless and compassionate, giving to others in any way she could. She may not have had much to give, but she gave with her whole heart. Joyce Ann cherished every token and memento given to her over the years, always having a story about the individual who gave it to her. She was authentic in her personality, honest to a fault, and had a way of making others laugh and bringing a smile to their face. Obituary Preview: Estill Lee Powell, born May 29, 1939, in Jackson County passed away on February 28, 2024, at Berea Health & Rehabilitation at the age of 84. He was the son of Laffie Powell and Gladys (Click) Powell (Robinson).
Estill was a builder by trade. He was a hard-working, simple man; yet extremely amazing and inventive. Estill was excellent at improvising. He would often create the tool he needed to do the job. He was a master woodcarver and enjoyed creating things with his hands. He enjoyed gardening and was very skilled at it. He liked mowing, and always wanted the landscape to look nice. Estill loved to hunt himself, but loved it even more when his son Jeff, and grandson Joe, hunted. He loved watching his grandsons catch fish. He spent a lot of time with his special friends, sharing memories, both past and present. Knife collecting and whittling were two of his favorite hobbies. He loved all kinds of food, especially lemon meringue pie. More than anything, Estill loved his family and spending time with them. Pastor Doug Collins visited Estill several times during his illness and prayed with him. He indicated to Pastor Collins that he had peace with God.
Estill is survived by one son, Jeff (Valerie) Powell, one grandson, Joseph Kelley, one special step-grandson, Trenton Pigg, and former wife and caregiver, Shirley Powell. He is also survived by seven sisters: Beatrice (Cledious) Abner of Berea, Ky., Betty (Kenny) Berry of Berea, Ky., Reva Hisel of Hisel, Ky., Opal (Danny) Adams of McKee, Ky., Sue (Alvin) Vanwinkle of Paint Lick, Ky., Lois Gabbard Chapman of Richmond, Ky., and Wanda (Ronnie) Shepherd of Gray Hawk, Ky. He is survived by four stepbrothers: Otis Robinson, Ernest Robinson, Robert Robinson, and Ronald Robinson. Other survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition, Estill is survived by countless friends too numerous to mention.
Besides Estill’s parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdad, Lester Robinson, one brother, Paul Powell, one brother-in-law, Mason Hisel, one daughter-in-law, Debbie Powell, and one nephew, Justin Gabbard. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 PM at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Monroe Pearson officiating. Buriel will follow in Kerby Knob Cemetery. Nina was born on November 30, 1936, in Jackson County, KY to Nelve and Grethel (Gabbard) Berry. She met Fletcher Jones and they were married on November 1, 1952. They had 6 children together.
In 1973, Nina went to work as a machinist at Campbell Hausfeld until she retired. Outside of work, you would find her gardening or playing in her flower beds. She had a green thumb and would grow anything and everything. She enjoyed raising many different farm animals. Nina loved her family and enjoyed watching her family grow.
She left a lasting legacy of love starting with her children: Shereta (Lonzo) Cain, Alan (Nancy) Jones, Darliss (Gary) Wert, Jerry (Chauntel) Jones, Calvin (Leah Hand) Jones, and Colleen (Scott) Owen; cherished grandchildren: Michael (Lori), Mark (Bobbi), Mickey, & Marty Cain, Brandy (John) Calvert, Casey (Elizabeth) Jones, Sharee (Bubba) Welch, Ryian (Deborah) Grubbs, Timothy Mayfield, Sheila (Brad) Taylor, Autumn Wert, Jeremy Hubbard, Billie (Dave) Brayton, Calvin Jr. (Angela) Jones, Phillip (April) Brindley, Angela Jones, Crystal Young, Charles (Nikki) Broughton, and Rebecca Graham; wonderful great grandma to 46 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren.
Nina was preceded in death by her husband Fletcher Jones; sisters: Leona Abrams and Barbara Sue Berry; brother: Charles Berry; sons-in-law: Lonzo Cain and Gary Wert; grandson's: Jeremy Hubbard and Gabriel Brayton.
Visitation will be at Brater Winter Funeral Home on Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 1 pm until the time of the funeral at 3 pm with Rev. Mark Garrett officiating. Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 12 PM at Pine Grove Cemetery in McKee, KY.

She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Frankfort and sang in the church choir.
Polly loved gardening, animals, music, and outdoor activities of all kinds. She was known for her outgoing nature, generosity.
