Marilyn Jean Castello - January 12, 1932 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Marilyn Jean Castello of Roswell, NM passed away from us on the morning of Saturday, April 3, 2022, with much of her family by her side or paused in prayer from their homes. She is reunited with her parents, all four of her siblings, and her life-long, one true love, Tom Castello Senior, who for sixty-three years of marriage made her laugh… and cuss some too.
Marilyn was born in Bucyrus, North Dakota on January 12, 1932, the second of three girls, with two older brothers that both doted on and terrorized them, as brothers do. After graduating from high school, where she played on the women’s basketball team, (yeah, who knew that?) she enrolled for classes at a teacher’s college in far flung Kansas City, Missouri and made her escape from farm life.
She eventually landed a job at the airport, selling tickets behind the counter for an airline. One day her roommate and bestie said her boyfriend had a buddy who not only had a good job, he had his very own car, AND no girlfriend. The ensuing blind date launched a love story that Hollywood is not fit to tell you.
They married and soon welcomed their firstborn son, Tom Junior. When they were told that any further additions to the family would have to be done by adoption, that’s just what they did. In 1964, they brought home a baby boy who would completely alter their understanding of how much, and how loudly, a toddler can talk. They named him Stephen Addington. Their love so deeply infused those boys that the only thing Steve has ever thought he was, was a Castello.
Marilyn loved God! She never found the worldly event of circumstance that was more powerful than the love of Jesus Christ. I am sure just as soon as he helps give her little corner of Heaven a good going over, including the outside windows, they will truly be at home with each other as old friends are.
Marilyn also loved her Immanuel Lutheran Church family and was honored to worship with and work alongside them all those years.
In another time and age, Marilyn Castello could have happily launched her keen mind and competitive spirit upon the corporate world, and consumers would have been the better for it. Whether she was quilting, gardening, square dancing, or simply using a wooden spoon to instill love-based values in the behinds of her boys, she never, ever, deviated from her defaults setting. Which was doing her very best at all times and knowing that luck, and God, favored those who worked for their prayers.
Marilyn was always a little shy and made herself reach out to people because she saw the rewards these actions could have. So, if you were her friend, please understand how special and interesting she found you.
Memorial services for Marilyn will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 22, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, afterwards she will lie in rest with her husband, as that amazing tale begins a new chapter.
Marilyn was our family’s True North Star. She was 90 years old. She was awesome.
She is survived by her two sons, Tom and Steve, daughters-in-law Brenda and Teresa, grandchildren, Nathan and Kristie, Colin, Max and Hannah, Dakota and Raven, and great-grandchild Maverick.

Donna "Deena" Jean Carter - June 29, 1956 - March 10, 2022

Departed: 03/10/2022 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Deena Carter lived life on her own terms. From the time she was little, she approached life's challenges with a fearlessness that gave her a unique world experience. Born Donna Jean Wall on June 29, 1956, in Carlsbad, N.M., she earned the name Deena from her sister who found it easier to pronounce. Deena passed away on March 10, 2022 after a brave battle with heart disease.
The eldest of five, Deena grew up in Utah with her four siblings, Cindy, Perry, Brett and Chad. Living in a rural area gave her an appreciation for nature. She had horses, dogs, cats, enjoyed camping, hiking and exploring. She cared for many stray animals through her life.
Deena was an avid reader and had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. An archeologist at heart, she would take solo trips camping and exploring the hills and deserts.
She married Gary Carter on July 11, 1974 and moved to Salt Lake City where their son Gabrial Lian Carter was born on September 13, 1976. Soon they moved to Maple Valley, Wash., to be closer to Deena's parents.
They moved to Ephrata, Wash., in 1982 and set up a small farm raising pigs, chickens, dogs, cockatiels and cats. Deena volunteered at a local mid-wife operation and wild animal refuge.
By 1990, Deena and Gary started their own landscaping business which continued until after Gabrial left for college in 1995. A few years later, Deena and Gary divorced.
In 2002, she and three cats traveled through the West; later joining her parents in Bullhead City, Ariz. until moving them to Washington in 2010. Deena became their caregiver for several years until they moved into assisted living.
Deena never loved the northwest climate and returned to New Mexico in 2017, reuniting with Mike Cunningham and rekindling a relationship started years before. They lived together where he lovingly cared for her throughout her final years. If you asked Deena about her life's greatest accomplishment, she'd say it was her son, Gabrial. She once said, "I never deserved such a perfect son, but God blessed me with one."
Deena is survived by her son Gabrial (Michele), two grandchildren, Aiden and Liam; four siblings, Cindy Wall (James Whipps); Perry Wall (Melody); Brett Wall (Misti); Chad Wall (Michelle); her partner, Mike Cunningham and two fur-babies, Kate the kitty and Chaos the cat. And numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Barbara Wall. She will be deeply missed by all her friends and family.
A private Celebration of Life for Deena will be held at Bitter Lake State Park at a later date.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the US Humane Society, 1255 23rd St. NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20037 or the Friends of Roswell Animals, PO Box 366, Roswell, NM 88202, https://forarescue.org in honor of  Deena's memory.

Margaret “Peggy Jo”, best known as Peggy, grew up in Escondido, CA. She was always on the go, from raising rabbits for 4-H to playing sports. She attended Escondido Union High School where she excelled in basketball, speedball, synchronized swimming, and field hockey. In addition to her athletic pursuits, she was active in student government, acting as secretary and president. She was also in the audio/visual club, public speaking club, school play and girl’s league. She played the trumpet in band, was a drum majorette and a member of the A Capella Choir. Peggy worked at The Mercantile during high school, where she was a sales associate and modeled the newest fashion collections for patrons.
She attended Palomar College and earned her Associates degree in Education. She served as the class president and was a force on the debate team, winning several team and individual awards at the Southern California Forensic Tournament. Peggy then attended the University of California Santa Barbara for one and half years where she worked on her speech pathology degree and continued to hone her debate skills. She finished her teaching degree at Bakersfield College and earned her credentials as a teacher in 1967.
Peggy married the love of her life Michael John Hillman in 1957 and they moved to Farmington, NM where Mike worked in the oil fields. They moved to Bakersfield, CA in 1961, where a major portion of her life was spent supporting her husband and their four children. All friends and family of any age were always welcome in their home, and Peggy served as “second mom” to many of the children’s friends. Peggy especially enjoyed teaching first grade at Norris Elementary for several years. She attended and was very involved in the First United Methodist Church. Peggy still managed to fit in civic activities such as the Cancer Society and Junior League. Her final gift to Bakersfield was in providing the drive and inspiration behind building the John S. Hillman Memorial pool at California State Bakersfield. Peggy supported Bakersfield swimming for years with scholarships and moral support.
In 1980 Mike and Peggy bought a ranch in Cambridge, Idaho where they ran a cow calf operation and she entertained friends and family, fed the ranch crew and cared for the ranch dogs. She truly loved all her dogs, and we are sure she often preferred their company to ours! In 1993 Peggy and Mike bought the Red Bluff Ranch in Roswell, NM. Her involvement in the community included acting as an Ombudsman for residents in long term care facilities. Peggy spent many hours supporting the grandkids in youth sports, 4-H and rodeo. She was a voracious reader and loved to help out at her grandchildren’s schools by reading to students.
Peggy is survived by: her daughters Helen (Gary) DeMoss of Bliss, ID and Michele Hillman of Griffith, IN; son Ron (Licia) Hillman of Roswell, NM; granddaughters Chelsea (Paul) Valente of Griffith, IN, and Katie Hillman of Washington DC; Sister Sandy (Tom) Cobb of Rolling Hills, CA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Skip and Sue Hillman of Mayflower, AR; nephews Doug (Doris) Finch, Steven Finch, Jeff Cobb, Jason (Michelle) Cobb, and David Hillman; and nieces Jerriann (Quinton) Fleming and Dana (Chad) Holst.
Peggy was preceded in death by: her husband Michael J. Hillman; parents, Joe and Helen Huggans; son John Sanford Hillman; grandson Michael Edward Hillman; and sister and brother-in-law Dottie and Gene Finch.
At 85 years, even given all she had accomplished, hers was a life cut short. Peggy was always on the go, and being so active, she created many wonderful friendships along the way. Family and friends will miss her more than she would have imagined, but we are comforted in knowing that Peggy Jo is reunited with the many who passed before her.
At Peggy's request, no services will be conducted. If you wish to remember Peggy, her favorite charities are Patriot PAWS and Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.

Kay Rogers - December 14, 1938 - January 27, 2022

Departed: 01/27/2022 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Greta Kay Rogers December 14, 1938 – January 27, 2022
Kay was born in Tipton, OK on December 14, 1938, and grew up in Springlake/Earth, Texas on her family farm. Kay was the 4th baby girl born into her family, and anytime she wanted something that all the kids were clamoring for, she would say “Me second!” because she was pretty sure there was absolutely no chance of being first! Kay’s family moved to Elida, New Mexico when Kay was fourteen. When they moved to Elida, people warned her parents about rattlesnakes, but they never warned them about tall handsome cowboys! Soon after moving to Elida a local cowboy stole Kay’s heart. Dale and Kay Rogers were married in Earth, Texas in 1954, and in May of 2021 they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
In 1970, Kay and Dale moved to Roswell, purchased Roswell Livestock Auction and began ranching in Elida and Roswell. During their twelve years of ownership, their hard work and dedication led the Auction to become well respected in the ranching community and throughout Southeastern New Mexico. In 1984, they sold the Auction to Larry Wooton and concentrated their efforts on the “farm store”. Kay and Dale opened Roswell Livestock & Farm Supply in 1975, and worked tirelessly to create a store that would be a “one-stop shop” for people all over Southeastern New Mexico. As Kay always says, “We went to the store one day and forgot to go home”. The store was definitely a second home for Kay, and it gave her so much joy to be able to work alongside her family every day. She formed life-long relationships with the friends and customers that came through their doors, and she loved giving back to the community that she loved. She served on numerous boards and was involved in various civic organizations during her 50 years in Roswell, including Assurance Home board, Community Foundation of Chaves County, Chaves County EDC board, ENMU-R Foundation board and being past President and board member of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. Kay & Dale are members of Country Club Road Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Dale Rogers; her siblings Burton & Harriet Seymour and Ann Hedges; her children Rodney & Patti Rogers, Rance Rogers, Reba Rogers, Russ & Marla Rogers and ReChele & Kent Taylor; her grandchildren Paige & John Hodge, Desiree & Cody Rattan, Kimberly & Matt Dillon, Taryn & Brian Houghtalin, Jeremy Rogers & Monika Kosztyo, Matthew & Onnie Rogers, Bryce & Emily Taylor, Dillon Rogers and 12 great-grandchildren who she always called her precious ones, Michael, Jaxon, Leroy, Henry, Hadley, Miles, Martin, Lily, Annie, Lewis, Hawk and Ellen; along with countless nephews, nieces, cousins and a huge extended family that she loved so much.
Kay Rogers was one of a kind. She was so incredibly joyful, loving & caring, kind, wise, and most importantly constant. She never wavered. We knew that if we called her, no matter what it was about, she would drop everything and listen. Truly listen. And then she would talk things through with you until your mind was at peace. She put her all into everything that she did and into the people that she cared about. She was a friend to so many. She just had that “thing”. If she walked into a room, she spread joy to everyone she encountered. She truly was a light. One of our favorite “Kay-isms” was “That makes my heart happy” and she lived that sentiment - so many things made her heart happy. She loved people and was so incredibly generous and helped everywhere that she could. She loved her family and loved her employees like family. She just had such an open and giving heart that she shared with so many.
She lived her life to the fullest and gave such insight and wisdom to those who were blessed enough to be around her. She taught us to always look for the best in every situation, and to never allow life to bring you down. She taught us to never think you know so much that you can’t learn something new. She taught us to choose happiness and joy every day. She taught us the importance of family and how to be a constant source of stability and love. She taught us that one person can make such a difference in countless lives. And last but not least, she always told us to remember that we are Blessed, not lucky.
We are left with so many special memories of our dear Mama Kay. She loved doing anything and everything as long as her family was surrounding her. From sitting at the campfire at the ranch, to singing hymns, to telling stories from the past and laughing into the night, to playing 42 with her family, the list goes on and on. She was “that” person for us. We wouldn’t trade these years for anything. We will treasure the countless trips, talking endlessly about everything and nothing, all the laughter and sometimes tears. Even in the tears she would say, “No Stinkin’ Thinkin’” and then always pointed out the good in the situation. She never wavered. She was joyful and laughing to the very end. We are so incredibly blessed (Remember – Blessed, not lucky!) to have had such an incredible person to look up to, and we will work diligently to continue the legacy that she built. As much as we will miss her here on this earth, we know that she had a huge welcoming committee waiting in Heaven for her. There’s no doubt that when she walked through those pearly gates God said, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
