Austin Grove Petry Jr. - December 16, 1951 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Arroyo Grande)
Obituary Preview: Austin was born in York, Pennsylvania, to parents Phyllis and Austin, Sr., Petry(predeceased). He has an older sister, Beverly, and younger brother, Daniel. Austin has a niece, Christina, and her family who live in Santa Ynez and two nephews, Derek and Brent, and one Granddaughter, Kylie.
Austin, Jr. lived in Japan long enough to be influenced by Japanese culture while his father was stationed there in the1950’s. Transferred to the Vandenberg Air Force Base, the rest of Austin’s youth was spent there, and attended Cabrillo High School in Lompoc. He was a wrestling star for their team.
During the summer after graduation, he learned to sail while working at Lopez Lake and the sailor was in him the rest of his life.
Austin went into the Air Force in 1972-1975, narrowly escaping Viet Nam. He was a Fire Fighter Specialist, trained and stationed at Vandenberg to fight jet fuel fires and crashes.
After the service, he worked at Diablo Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo until he was offered a sought-after position at California Men's Colony as a Correctional Officer. He had a distinguished career for 30 years. He was well-respected by fellow officers, as well as the inmates. Austin was a wonderful Dad to children Candy and Farrell and involved them in camping, hiking, and sailing as youngsters. Farrelll preceded Austin in death, 2022. Candy resides in Colorado, but was there, holding her father’s hand to the end in the hospital.h5fb
Austin’s Harley Davidson moniker was “Scooter Tramp”, riding motorcycles since his mid-teen years. He rode several Harleys over his lifetime and rode all over the United States and even transcontinental three times. Silly as it sounds, Austin was a champion slow racer: riding his huge Harley, fifty feet within a 3-foot lane without tipping over OR putting his foot down. He won every race, every time he entered.
Austin was also a Scuba diver, using his skills to fix the bottoms of his sail boats, monohull, catamarans, trimarans. He fished and had several recreational diving experiences in the Caribbean and Hawaii.
Austin was a natural at growing avocado trees and using grafting techniques to propagate avocados bigger than softballs; they were delicious. He also had a fondness for cacti, potted beautifully around his home. Austin was a fabulous dancer! From about 1998 he took lessons from numerous dance teachers and never stopped learning, even observing his teacher and classmates taking lessons and dancing when he could not a few weeks earlier. He even took notes!
Austin made the BEST BBQ sauce! And known for his fabulous ribs, tri tips and every other meat or vegetable. He was a “Grill Sargeant”.
Austin was adopted by a feral cat, “Raider”, who loved him very much. The cat was not liked by a roommate at the time, but was a devout Raider’s fan. So Austin named the cat “Raider” so the roommate would take a liking to her.
The most memorable thing about Austin was his deeply committed friendships with many people and especially the “Garage Guys”, friends over many years getting together at each other’s homes. They shared respect, kindness, caring and support during times of life’s troubles, playing pool, laughing, and joking when none. These were the friends who did everything to help Austin this last year when he went through grueling tests, treatments, both with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, for pancreatic cancer which metastasized.
There is a hole in the heart of everyone who ever knew him, and he will be remembered until the day we join him.
He will be cremated, and a Memorial Service is planned in the future at Lady Family Mortuary, 555 Fair Oaks, Arroyo Grande, CA .

Rudy L Savala - October 24, 1930 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Arroyo Grande)
Obituary Preview: Rudy Liscano Savala was born October 24, 1930 into a migrant farm labor family, the fifth of 10 children. His parents settled in Pinedale, California when he was 8 years old, and he began, speaking no English, to attend Clovis schools. He was a good student and went on to graduate from Fresno High school while working to help support the Savala family. He had excelled in school thanks to his mother’s encouragement and the mentoring of some special teachers in his life.
After high school, he initially joined the California National Guard saying it was to earn the one or two dollar stipend for attending Guard meetings; however, soon faced with the Korean War draft, he instead joined the Army in 1952. Fortunately, his battalion was stationed in the US occupied section of Germany. He spoke often about how much he liked the German people, his fellow army recruits, and the chance to do some traveling in Europe. It was an opportunity for him to study German, and he was enthusiastic about using his German to make friends in the local population. He said he would have liked to stay and live in Germany, but needed to return to his family in California when leaving the Army.
Back in California in 1955, he worked and attended school at Fresno State College (FSC). He graduated from FSC with a degree in mathematics and physics and a secondary teaching credential. Clovis and Fresno School Districts were blunt at that time about not hiring Mexican Americans, and he was frustrated that he could only act as a substitute teacher. A friend on the FSC faculty encouraged him to go to Berkeley to work at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory where Dr. Luis Alvarez was hiring data analysts with his academic background to work on the study of particle physics.
It was a heady time for research in physics at Berkeley and he worked with and for many illustrious scientists. At the same time, he was exposed to the beginnings of the civil rights movement, especially Mexican American advocacy. He had been encouraged at FSC to join the young Democrats on campus and thus began a lifelong dedication to democratic policies and voting rights. If you met him in later life, his second question to you would be, “Are you registered”? If not, he could pull out a registration form and sign you up right there.
While in Berkeley, he was active with the fledgling Mexican American Political Association and found time to marry his wife, Mary, and start a family. A friend, admiring his energy and his passion for politics, suggested he consider the practice of law as a career. The University of San Francisco was offering a special evening law school program for veterans and Rudy was accepted in the program, commuting four nights a week to the University. After graduating from USF, he returned with his family to Fresno. He worked first for the California Rural Legal Association and later as a legislative assistant in Fresno to then Assemblyman, George Zenovich. In 1970, he opened his own office with Armando Rodriguez where he practiced law for over 45 years.
He maintained his civic and political involvement in Fresno over all that time, among other things, serving on Valley Medical Center Advisory Board, as chairman of the Democratic Central Committee, and initiating an education program to stress the dangers of driving drunk. He felt a great responsibility to mentor young attorneys as he had been mentored as a young man, and to be a help and advisor to other young men and the members of his family. He joined the League of Women Voters and the National Organization of Women and received an award for his advocacy to further equal rights and pay for women faculty at CSUF.
He loved to travel and prioritized time with his wife, Mary, to visit many places in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Mexico, and South America. His travels were a big part of his love of languages. He made great efforts to be able to speak at least a few words in Greek, French, Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese, while polishing his native language, Spanish, and his love of German. It made him very happy when he dreamed in German. He raised some eyebrows as the only non Greek adult in after-school Greek language classes. He was fond of Spanish dichos, sayings, and often repeated one of his favorites to family and friends so that they would remember, going forward: Los tiempos buenos, hay que gozarlos y los tiempos malos, hay que hacerlos mejor
The good times, enjoy them.
And the bad times, make them better.
Rudy leaves his wife, Mary, a son, John, of Santa Barbara, a son, Robert and his wife, Christa, and family in Mill Valley, a daughter, Kathy Castello, and her husband, Paul, in Nipomo, and a daughter, Elizabeth Fordyce, and her husband, Paul, and family in Arroyo Grande. He was “Opa” to eight very special grandchildren: Erica, John Paul, Mateo, Anton, Torin, Jade, Grant and Alison, all of whom he adored. He was the last survivor of his nine siblings and leaves many nieces and nephews, too numerous to name here. Services to be held at St. Paul Newman’s Center 1572 E Barstow Ave., Fresno, CA 93710
Monday April 29, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Reception to immediately follow at the Newman Center Hall

Edward A. Klause and Anna (Figueiredo) Klause - December 31, 1932 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Arroyo Grande)
Obituary Preview: Edward A. Klause and Anna (Figueiredo) Klause Edward A. Klause of Arroyo Grande, CA, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024. He was 91 years old. He joined his wife of almost 60 years, Anna, who passed away on May 21,
2022. Lovingly nicknamed “Bubby” by his family, he was born in Dover, Delaware to Edward and Susan Klause on December 31, 1932. He grew up in Piscataway, New Jersey. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served until 1955. His family moved to Pismo Beach, California in 1952. He joined his parents and three younger sisters after his military
service ended. He was an engineering student at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. There was no “Bubby” without his “Annie” or “Babe” as they fondly called one another. Anna was born on October 13, 1936 to John and Jessie Figueiredo. She graduated from Arroyo Grande
High School in 1955 and earned her Associate Degree from Allan Hancock College in 1957. Annie was best friends with Bubby’s sister, Dolores, and he was close friends with her brother,
John. The two fell in love and married on September 1, 1962. They settled in Santa Maria, California where Bubby worked at Columbia Record Factory while Annie worked for Bank of America. In 1975, they decided to leave the warmth of the California Central Coast and move to Alaska. It was an amazing adventure, but they felt called back to California a year later and settled in Arroyo Grande, California. Bubby joined his father-in-law who had a welding business in Grover Beach while Annie returned to Bank of America, spending much of her career in management and operations before retiring in 1995. Bubby eventually became the owner of Ed’s Welding
Service, setting up shop at his 5-acre home in Corralitos Canyon in Arroyo Grande. They delighted in living out in the country, watching the quail and the deer roam freely. As their
last name was Klause, Annie LOVED to collect Santa Clauses of all shapes, sizes and forms. Walking into their home was like a visit to Santa’s Village, all-year-round. The nieces and nephews once tried to count all the Santas, but lost count after reaching over 1,000. They even seemed to exemplify Santa and Mrs. Claus with their warmth, generosity and overwhelming hospitality. Annie could always be found in the kitchen, baking cookies, making pies or tasty soups and breads. She loved to decorate cakes and made countless cakes for family birthdays, weddings and special occasions. She loved to sew and was famous for making cloth shopping bags and aprons for family and friends in her later years. Bubby could be spotted outside at his “Santa Maria style” wood grill barbecue which he made himself as a skilled welder. Santa Maria tri-tip and linguica were family favorites at parties. They regularly donated bikes and toys to Marine Toys for Tots and other local holiday programs. They enjoyed traveling around the United States, enjoying the beauty of this nation that they loved dearly. They especially enjoyed camping at various sites throughout California and took their nieces and nephews along for the fun on many occasions. But, at their core, was their commitment to family. There wasn’t anything they wouldn’t do for their siblings and spouses, their nieces and nephews and their great nieces and nephews. Their acts of love were always given with selflessness, humor and overwhelming
joy. Ed is survived by his sisters, Patricia Lewis (Bob) and Nancy Davis, his sister-in-law Dianna Oldham, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, who sadly passed away two years before. He is also preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Peter Bonapace, his sister and brother-in-law Dolores and John
Penner, and his brothers-in-law Manuel Figueiredo, John Figueiredo and Claude Oldham. Our family would like to thank the staff from The Oaks in Nipomo who provided care to Bubby and Annie for the past two years. We are so grateful for the love and support from so many
family members, friends and neighbors during this difficult time.

Allan Craig Roske - October 01, 1956 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Arroyo Grande)
Obituary Preview: Allan, “Al”, “Big Al”, “Papa Rock”, “Bapa”, “Uncle Allan”, “Dear Brudder” etc., was home in human form. Before he walked into a room, you’d hear his boisterous laugh echoing throughout the neighborhood, and you’d know that you were about to receive the biggest hug and pats on your back. When he asked you about your life, you could expect the most enthusiastic exclamations of joy or concern or whatever response was exactly what you didn’t realize you needed to hear in that moment. One moment you’d be catching up on the basics of life, and the next he’d be sharing philosophical or spiritual truths that would fill your heart with hope.
Allan Craig Roske was born in Spokane, Washington to Allan Thomas Roske and Donna Nadine Roske (Howell) on October 1st, 1956. As a young boy, Allan enjoyed riding the bus to Spirit Lake High School games where his dad was the coach of the football and basketball teams. As a teenager at Oakmont High School, Allan became a dedicated football player, wrestler, and student body president. When Allan was attending school at Sierra College, he worked as a paratransit bus driver and unknowingly met his future mother-in-law one day, who insisted he meet her daughter. As the story goes, he walked in, smelled the most delicious aroma coming from the kitchen, and put his fingers in a giant pot of spaghetti before introducing himself to Lillian Roske (Baggett). The two were married for 27 years before her sudden passing in 2008. Together they shared a love of music, adventure, and their children.
Allan graduated from CSU Sacramento with a BA in Psychology in 1979. Next, he earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology, Fresno in 1985. Allan was a dedicated and caring soul to his many clients and colleagues over the course of his career as a clinical psychologist. His robust career included the establishment of his own private practice, Antelope Creek Counseling, where he provided mental health assessment and support to individuals and families. Other notable workplaces included Atascadero State Hospital, Pacific Health Center Medical Group, Placer County Conditional Release Program, California Men’s Colony, and teaching positions at numerous universities including CSU Sacramento and Chapman College. When he wasn’t providing care to clients, he enjoyed lunchtime runs, stopping to get delicious pastries at La Plaza Bakery on his way home from work at Salinas Valley State Prison, and writing reports in his beach chair while he watched the waves at Montana De Oro. Allan also contributed to psychological research, including the development of the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R).
Allan fiercely loved (and loves) his family and friends, and would do anything to offer support, a listening ear, and a message of love. Allan’s greatest joy was being a dad to his children and a “Bapa” to his granddaughters. He often proudly wore a T-Shirt that stated “Nothing Scares Me—I Have Three Daughters”.
Alongside his powerful love for others, Allan was called throughout his life to explore nature, which he saw as a sacred connection to the depths of the soul, God, and each other—to name a few adventures: sea-kayaking, sailing, surfing, hiking, driving his much-envied VW van, adventuring with his ’47 Kenskill Teardrop camper, jamming at Live Oak Music Festival, Baja Ha-Ha’s with Uncle Chuck/Randy, joyous family reunions, time spent at Cave Lake, dancing (which his daughters affectionately referred to as his “noodle dancing”), and of course infinite rides on his motorcycle aka his “FCB” (Fuck Cancer Bike).
In 2011, Allan was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that metastasized to his brain at the age of 55, and he was initially given a prognosis of 6 months to live. This day marked a shift in Allan’s life, whereafter he was determined to be present for as many days laughing with his loved ones that he could get. With his ever-present strength, determination, and what he referred to as his “happy-go-lucky”, he forged ahead through treatments, eventually finding a clinical trial with UC Irvine Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. With the guidance of his oncologist, Dr. Sai-Hong Ignatius Ou, Allan was admitted to a clinical trial of the cancer drug “Crizotinib”, which he and his family recognize as one of the largest factors in him living 12 full years past his original prognosis. Over the course of the last decade, Allan’s dad, Tom, consistently drove him to and from treatment at UC Irvine, which they recently calculated as over 200,000 miles of stories, laughs, naps, wrong turns, tasty food, and love.
Allan’s love for life, his passion for dreamwork, and his unyielding spirit were his armor. On the days when life felt overwhelming, his motorcycle was his companion and his bearer of lessons about resilience and power of the present moment. He reminded himself and his loved ones to “be here now” on the journey of life. He found solace in the laughter of his children and grandchildren (who were likely laughing at his own wild laugh or ridiculous dad jokes). He found strength and love in the unwavering support and camaraderie of family and friends. Allan’s journey is one of profound love, learning, and legacy. He taught us the value of cherishing every moment, the importance of facing our fears with courage, and the beauty of finding joy in the current moment, no matter what pain it held. His legacy is defined by the love he shared and the indomitable spirit that inspired all who knew him. Allan left us for his next adventure, and the lessons of his life journey continue to guide us. In our hearts, Allan rides on, his spirit free as the open road, his memory a beacon of love, resilience, and the profound joy of living.
Allan was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Roske (Howell), his wife Lillian Roske (Baggett), his mother-in-law Frances Baggett, and numerous treasured aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, and friends who surely welcomed him home with loving arms. Allan is survived by his beloved father, Tom Roske; his dear sister Nadine Martinez, his loving children Danielle Roske, Dana Roske, Danielle Wilt, and Thomas Hutchinson; and his sweet grandchildren June Hames, Ariela Hames, Joe Hutchinson, and Sydney Hutchinson. Allan was also a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews, a devoted and caring cousin, nephew, father-in-law, and friend to many, who he loves dearly.

Deni Elaine Gonzales - June 17, 1951 - January 04, 2024

Departed: 01/04/2024 (Arroyo Grande)
Obituary Preview: ENI ELAINE GONZALES June 17, 1951 January 4, 2024
We are devastated to announce the passing of Deni Elaine Gonzales.
Deni was born on June 17, 1951 in Bakersfield, California to Aldon and Dorothy Rose. She passed away on January 4, 2024. She attended kindergarten and 1st grade in Wasco, CA (1954-57), 2nd & 3rd grade in Burbank, CA (1958-59) and in 1960 her family moved back to Bakersfield where she completed her elementary years and attended South High School.
Deni met her husband Raul (aka Ralph) in 1972 and had four children; Rachel, Christopher, Amber, and Anthony. She followed in her mother's footsteps and embarked on a 30-year career in banking, where she developed lasting relationships with her many loyal customers. After retiring she lived out her golden years with her feet in the sand, surrounded by the sea air. She loved to laugh, sing, dance, play the piano, take family vacations, dress up, and shopping, shopping, and more shopping. Our mother had the gift of creativity and had recently rediscovered a love of crafting and making jewelry. She also had a knack for making beautiful hand painted bottles that her friends and family were so in awe of that she spent most of her time fulfilling their requests.
If you were lucky enough to witness one of her laughing episodes, you would know she had an infectious laugh, and would find yourself laughing along hysterically with her without knowing why. She always made everyone she interacted with feel special. Our mother had an unwavering dedication to her family and friends, and above all, she ensured that her children knew they were adored, cherished, and loved by her.
Deni was preceded into heaven by her mother Dorothy whom she missed dearly and many dear family and friends.
