Diane K. Foley - March 18, 1960 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Diane K. Foley, age 64, of rural Yuba, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2024. She was born on March 18, 1960, to the late Ernest and Marjorie (Steinmetz) Fanta in Richland Center. On November 29, 1980, Diane married Francis Foley in La Farge. Diane stayed home and took care of her children and the neighborhood children, making sure they had a safe place to be.
She was a hard worker when it came to loading hay bales and working on the potato farm with her husband. Diane loved the outdoors, spending time gardening and swimming. She also enjoyed painting and cooking. While living in Yuba, Diane spent time working at the voting polls and bartending, where people learned of her hardworking, yet opinionated nature.
Diane’s real passion was spending time with her family. She particularly enjoyed quality time with close family and friends while cooking or grilling out. Diane also helped raise her grandchildren while her children were working.
Diane is survived by her husband, Francis; her sons: Joe, Tony, and Josh; grandchildren: Mick, Logan, Elizabeth, Carter, Skylar, and Dominic; her siblings: Rick Fanta, Sandra Franks, and Rodney (Lois) Fanta; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Steven Fanta.

Sharon Sue Rose - November 14, 1940 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Sue (Gilman) Rose passed into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
She was born on November 14, 1940, in La Farge, the seventh of ten children born to Earl and Mae Gilman. Sharon grew up on the family farm, honing a work ethic that would be the envy of any three men combined. She learned to do a lot with a little, appreciate every blessing, honor her parents, and love the life she was given. There were stories of lean times and hardship, but there were far, far more of good times, laughter, food, mischief, euchre games that to this day remain legend, and love.
She attended elementary school in Fairview and enjoyed the long run home—all downhill, and most days, those short legs led the pack the whole way. She graduated from La Farge High School, class of 1958.
Her entire life, Sharon loved good music and dancing. It’s not surprising then, that she first laid eyes on the man she would fall in love with and eventually marry, Ward Rose, at Danceland. Her brother Pete would occasionally let her tag along on a night on the town after promising their mother he would not go to the bar in Rockton; Mae didn’t like the thought of him driving on that twisty road. True to his word, they did not go to Rockton and dutifully passed it by on their way to Ontario.
On July 11th, 1959, Ward and Sharon were married at the parsonage in West Lima. They were very well matched when it came to a strong work ethic, a persistent nature, a slight stubborn streak, and the desire and will to create a good life for their family. During their years together, they owned working farms near La Farge and Rockton, and in 1963, they bought the hardware store, running it for 25 years.
Sharon was proud of her hometown and made time to get involved in many community projects; the beautification of Main Street initiative, Girl Scouts, the Bicentennial celebration, and the creation of floats for countless parades are just a few. She also worked diligently with several pillars of the community in staunch support of the La Farge Lake and Dam project.
These occasions often allowed her to draw on her many artistic talents. She got in line twice when they were passing out those skills. She could draw, paint, embroider, quilt, was a calligrapher, wove baskets, worked in stained glass, created beautiful flower gardens, and enjoyed the challenge of simply trying something new.
After Ward passed away in 1986, she sold the store and went to work for S & S Cycle in Viola, until she retired. She was blessed to find love again in her life and married Charlie Drew on September 12, 2002. Throughout their life together, they traveled, enjoyed old-time country music, dancing, euchre, fishing along the Mississippi, and time spent with many good friends and family. They eventually moved to Kearney, MO, near her son, Wayne. When Charlie passed, Sharon moved back to Wisconsin. Sadly, at this point in her life, she was suffering from Alzheimer’s and spent her remaining years in care near her daughter, Cheryl.
Left to honor Sharon’s memory are her children: Wayne (Ann) of Liberty, MO, Cheryl (Bill) Wilder of Coloma, WI, Ardeen (Fred) Stoll of Maple, WI, and stepson, Randy (Mary) Rose of Colorado Springs, CO. She is further survived by eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and sibling, Valdo “Pete” (Shirley) Gilman.
She was preceded in death by Ward, her husband of 27 years; Charlie, her husband of 17 years; her parents; siblings: Earl Gilman Jr., Virgil Gilman, Iva Lea McCollough, Shirley Marshall, William “Bill” Gilman, and DeAnna Johnson; and infant twin sisters, Rita and Rae Gilman.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the excellent staff at Dimensions Living in Stevens Point and in particular to the cast of extraordinary people dedicated to helping her and her family through some difficult days.

Beverly “Becky” Tunks Winters - March 23, 1930 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Beverly “Becky” Jean (Dorschied) Tunks Winters, “The Entertainer,” age 93, of La Farge, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024. She was born on March 23, 1930, to Harold and Carol (Chambers) Dorschied on Salem Ridge, but grew up on Ma and Pa’s Park which was very important to her. She married George Tunks, Jr. on June 3, 1950, at the Dell United Methodist Church. They were married sixteen years and had three daughters: Barbara, Patti, and Cara.
George passed away at the age of 40, suffering a heart attack, on October 21, 1966. Becky was taught at that time to be strong, resilient, and to stick together, and the amount of sadness you feel is the amount of love you feel; and that is a good thing. Becky was always thinking of someone to help in any way that might be the one thing that would change their life forever. Her daughters will always remember that she loved them enough for two parents after their father’s passing.
She started playing the accordion when she was 13 years old, which her brother Bill brought back for her from out West. She said she played out in the barn a lot due to her family’s requests. Then, after a while Becky learned to play the piano, but she could never read a note; it was all by ear. She could hear a song on the radio and sit down and play it on the piano. It brought her so much joy, but it brought others even more joy. She played at LarryFest for 26 years with The In-Laws, including Virgil Sebranek and John Pesik, Sr., and also travelled to nursing homes in the area. She also played with Bill Dorschied and Kenny Hatfield at many events.
Becky is survived by her daughters, Cara (Jeff) Johnson and Patti (Bernie) Miller; grandchildren: Tyler (Amanda) Johnson, Lucas Johnson, Jordon Johnson, Brandon Hysel, Craig (Ashley) Hysel, Tracy Mislivecek, Tammie (Tim) McCune, and Rick (Lori) Mislivecek; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Adam, Aiden, Shaye, Chloe, Erica, Gabe, Kate, Cameron, and a baby due in September; and many nieces and nephews that she considered children. Becky is further survived by her life-long friend, Bonnie Daines Shird.
“…a time to weep and a time to mourn and a time to dance.” Mom is the happiest she has ever been with her family and friends that went before her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Jr. Tunks; her daughter, Barbara; her parents; her siblings: William “Bill” (Jo-Anne) Dorschied, Doris (John Sr.) Pesik, Darlene (James “Bud”) Copus, Joyce (Virgil) Sebranek; and many other in-laws.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the La Farge Community Center. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a time for story sharing and lunch after the service.

Bernice Frances Schroeder - September 20, 1919 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Bernice Frances (Kenworthy) Schroeder, age 104, passed away peacefully at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, WI, on February 20, 2024. She spent the last four weeks of her life in their excellent care and that of St. Croix Hospice.
Bernice was born the second child of Juliette (Nale) and John Kenworthy on September 20, 1919, in Stark Township of Vernon County, Wisconsin, growing up on an 80-acre hillside homestead on South Jug Creek. She graduated from La Farge High School in 1937, and from Vernon County Normal School in 1939. She taught for seven years in rural schools in Vernon County including Otter Creek, Rockton, and Jug Creek where her duties included not only instruction but at a time when teachers carried in water and built fires before the students arrived.
On October 21,1946, she was united in marriage to Charles Harvey Schroeder and for the next 24 years they operated Schroeder Brother’s Mink Ranch in Stark Township, La Farge, WI. They retired from the fur business in 1969, when the property was claimed by the Federal Government for the Kickapoo Flood Control Project, an endeavor that was never completed. They remained in the Kickapoo Valley, building a retirement home overlooking the majestic hills and she moved to Viroqua shortly after her husband’s death. The last 14 years she lived independently in the Bethel Birchwood community with her beloved cats, Cali and Heidi.
Bernice had a great sense of community and service. She was a member of the La Farge United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and the United Methodist Women. She was instrumental in the building of the first medical clinic in La Farge and physician procurement, a member of the Star Valley School Board and was an award winning 4-H leader for the Kickapoo Rustlers. Bernice also served on the Vernon Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, Hospital Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary, Douglas Mental Health Services Board, Bethel Home Foundation, and the Historic Viroqua Temple Theater (ARTT). This year, she was recognized as a 50-year member of the Order of The Eastern Star Viroqua Chapter No. 35. Her passion for preserving history, especially the history of the land, is reflected in her life membership in the Vernon County Historical Society where she served as a volunteer. She lobbied for recognition of the former Kickapoo landowners who were displaced with the failed flood control Kickapoo Dam project which was halted due to environmental and monetary concerns. Their memory is now preserved at the Star Valley Memorial site that she co-founded on the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. This site contains many perennials that were relocated from the original home locations in which she had a hand in transplanting most of them. She was instrumental in establishing the KVR Community Garden located at the Visitor Center where she worked tirelessly as a volunteer which bears a plaque with her name inscribed as “Gardener and Friend.”
Bernice defined herself through love of nature and the land and the bounty it has to offer. From hunting deer and turkeys to planting thousands of trees to reforest a 70-acre parcel of pastured land she called “Schroeder Woodland” embodied her passion and joy to pass to future generations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Harvey; her brother, Eldon Kenworthy; sister-in-law, Betty Kenworthy; former sister-in-law, Beverly; niece, Marcia Kenworthy; son-in-law, Ron Hoffland; special friend, Kenneth Hanson; and feline companion, Cali along with many wonderful friends.
Remaining to carry on her legacy is her daughter, Kathleen Hoffland of La Farge/ Madison; son, Donald of Milwaukee; grandson, Kristofer Hoffland (Chad Lind) granddaughter, Jodee (Nick) Dushack; great grandson, Mason Dushack, all of Madison; her fur-baby, Heidi of Viroqua; and Roger Hanson and family of California.
Bernice’s family would like to thank Dr. James DeLine, Darlene Running and Jean Pintz-Olson (Heidi’s foster mom) of Bethel Helping Hands, Alene Hanson, Pat Rubasch, and Gary Hagen for their support for her to be able to live independently. They would also like to thank Norseland Nursing Home and St. Croix Hospice for their excellent end of life care.

Patsy Johnson - June 15, 1943 - September 24, 2023

Departed: 09/24/2023 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: La Farge – Our mom, Patsy Johnson, passed away on the morning of Sunday, September 24, 2023. Our mom was loving, kind, selfless, fun, and sassy. She had her tea every morning and watched Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every night. She loved all things organic and all things cotton. She loved feeding the birds, the sunshine, movies, and dark chocolate. She loved antiques and collectibles and even owned two antique shops during her lifetime. She loved dragonflies, bees, shells, gardening, morel mushrooms, reading, and her dog Annie Rose (Pipper). She loved going with her daughter to look at Christmas lights and celebrating each of her birthdays to the fullest (she turned 80 this past June). She also loved the Kickapoo Valley more than any place she had ever lived.
She disliked litterbugs, polyester, the humidity, and the colors mauve and peach. Before her health problems and her stroke, she ‘loved’ to dance, play scrabble, and go to garage sales. She gave THE BEST hugs ever to all. We will most certainly miss those hugs. Some, maybe most are thinking “this certainly isn’t the typical obituary,” but our mom wasn’t the typical person. She was better than that. She was unique.
She will be missed by her daughter, Traci (Doug) Albright; her son, Todd (Mary) Amidon; her grandchildren, Brad (Heather), Chris (Alli), and Tyler; great-granddaughter, Cora; her best friend, (Sis) Kathy; David and Angel, and her family and friends.
Special thanks to Tamsen Morgan, nurse Cassie, and to Leria for all the exceptional care and love you provided her with all these years. Thanks to the EMT’s for your trips and for helping her and to the staff at Vernon Manor for your compassion and care the last five months.
We will always miss her beauty, her laughter, and her kindness. We will miss you mom and will always love you more. We hope you are dancing freely without pain in the sunshine. You will forever and always be in our hearts.
Per her request, there will be no service. Instead, just smile when you think of her or when you dance or when you garden and know that she loved BIG.
Motherhood is eternal. Our influence does not stop when our children turn 18. It does not stop when they are 40, 50, or 60. It does not even stop when we pass away. Our fingerprints and wisdom touch the next generation and the one’s following. Love has no end. A mother’s love ripples to eternity.

Wayne North - September 07, 1934 - September 10, 2023

Departed: 09/10/2023 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Wayne North, age 89, of Sussex, formerly of La Farge, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023. He was born September 7, 1934, in Clyde, Wisconsin to his parents, Corda and Faye North.
Wayne’s family moved from Clyde to the Kickapoo Valley in the mid-thirties. While attending Bear Creek School, Wayne met the love of his life, Belinda Lou Winchel. His family moved to various farms throughout the Kickapoo Valley in his younger years.
At a young age, Wayne was interested in boats and built a small boat while living at a farm just outside of La Farge. This love for boats and the water inspired Wayne to join the U.S. Navy to serve during the Korean War Conflict at 16 years old. While on leave from the U.S. Navy, Wayne returned home long enough to marry the love of his life, Belinda Lou, and together they had two sons, Randy and Edwin.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Wayne started a career at Continental Can Company in Milwaukee as a steel worker. He worked at Continental Can for 42 years before retiring.
Wayne found Christ and served the Lord by becoming an elder with the Church of Christ. He was constantly helping others in need both in the Church and in his private life. When Wayne wasn’t helping others, he enjoyed nature and the outdoors. Wayne was always working outside at his home in Sussex, Wisconsin or at Chadwick Hollow in the Kickapoo Valley. He was the epitome of you can take the boy out of the Kickapoo, but you can’t take the Kickapoo out of the boy.
When Wayne’s gate was open at Chadwick Hollow, it was an invitation to anyone that wanted to come up visit have coffee or eat. A good game of euchre was always welcome. Wayne also loved time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on camping trips or just playing in the yard.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 70 years, Belinda; his son, Edwin (Suzanne) North; grandchildren: Eric North, Lori North (Brian Bigley), and Scott Patnode (Mayya Pechenova); and great-grandchildren: Ava Billodeau, Logan Billodeau, Odin Billodeau, Lincoln North, Brighten Bigley, and Rylen Bigley.

Richard "Ricky" Herken, Jr. - June 30, 1977 - June 26, 2023

Departed: 06/26/2023 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Richard “Ricky” Franklin Herken, Jr., age 45, of La Farge, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 26, leaving behind a legacy of pure love and happiness. Blessed with a big heart, Ricky was a bright light to all who knew him – a constant champion of the underdog, an adventurer with stellar dance moves, and a lover of all.
The youngest of seven kids, Ricky was born on June 30, 1977, in San Angelo, Texas, to Paula (Gabrielson) and Richard Herken. They moved back home to La Farge in 1979, where Ricky and his friends and siblings lived a “magical 80’s childhood.” He lived next door to his best friend and was part of a tight-knit group of friends who were well-known around town. They loved to ride their bikes through La Farge and swim in the Herken pool.
Ricky was imaginative and adventurous. He loved art and baseball, and he graduated from La Farge High School in 1996. He briefly studied art at UW-Stout before getting his pipefitting certificate and setting off on his next big adventure, working on the pipelines in Alaska, splitting three weeks at a time between there and home.
Ricky met the love of his life, Amber (Miller), in 2011, at a party. After asking around for her name, he messaged her on Facebook. A few months later, Amber finally saw the message and they decided to have dinner. He showed up with a box of produce and salmon, and she made him dig potatoes out of the garden for their first meal together. The next two weeks were a blur, hardly leaving each other’s side as they fell in love.
Amber would drive Ricky to the airport for his commute to Alaska. The days she saw his plane land back home again were the best. One day, the pair let the plane fly away without him. He decided he’d stay home for good.
They married on October 20, 2012, at their “Forever Ridge,” the ridgetop they called home in La Farge where they built a house, gardened, hosted friends and family, and raised their beloved animals.
Ricky was many things: an artist, an animal lover, a handyman, and the first one on a dance floor. He was proud of La Farge and his heritage, and he cherished coffee in the morning with his mom. He loved canoeing on the Kickapoo River, camping, music and painting. He loved the Green Bay Packers, especially when he was hosting his family to watch a game. He enjoyed getting dressed up to go dancing. He and Amber loved to travel, road tripping to San Francisco, not knowing which tent they’d stay at next, or just taking a drive to their favorite spot on the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. He loved all beings – from insects and birds to a stranger on the street who he could quickly befriend. He held social justice issues close to his heart and always believed in the little guy. He was witty, always there to greet you with a warm hug and a smile, and always ready for the next adventure. But most importantly, Ricky was a compassionate friend who would drop anything to help someone – sharing his Garbage Pail Kids playing cards with his enemy or camping out in his sister’s backyard after she lost her son, just in case she needed him. He was an incredibly loving, proud, and fun uncle. He was the best little brother, who – despite being the youngest – was an old soul who his siblings often turned to for advice and wisdom. He was a devoted and loving husband, who adored his life on the ridge with Amber so immensely. He loved and felt deeply. He was “the best of us.”
The day before he passed, Ricky was amazed by a double rainbow that had appeared on the ridge after a much-needed summer rain. He snapped a photo of it and sent it to his family and friends, sharing his love like he always did.
Ricky is survived by his wife, Amber and their pack of dogs: Hope, Minni Mouse, Pancho “Boogie,” and Gema. He is also survived by his siblings, who he loved dearly: Cindy (Jeff) Campbell, Blake (Amy) Herken, Jenny (Brad) Parker, Corri (Rich) Fisk, Richelle (Eric) Zimmerman, and RJ (Tanya) Herken; brothers-in-law, Mitch (Jennifer) Miller and Jammie (Jennifer) Miller; and many beloved nieces and nephews and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his cherished parents, Richard and Paula Herken; beloved nephew, Jesse Parker; sister-in-law, Amy Herken; and close friends, Jon Steinmetz and Cassidy Parker.

David Buroker Sr. - March 16, 1939 - April 25, 2023

Departed: 04/25/2023 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: David Buroker, age 84, of Reedsburg, WI, died Tuesday, April 25th, 2023, in Middleton, WI.
He was born on March 16th, 1939, in Vernon County, WI, the son of Rennie Buroker and Mildred (Atkins) Shumate. David was a graduate of West Lima High School.
He married Edna Hart on Dec 19th, 1957, the year of their high school graduation in La Farge, WI and had three children: David, Sandy, and Janet.
He joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard and worked at Huston’s mink ranch out of high school, then at Jeffers Truck Sales in La Farge, WI as a diesel mechanic, then later at Koenecke Equipment working on tractors and machinery and finally as a John Deere salesman near Viroqua.
He always said he was a Bears fan (that may have been joke to get a rise out of people). He was a deer, squirrel, and raccoon hunter. There were always coon hounds in the early years and later pet dogs. He liked to joke around and tell stories, though it was always best to keep on your toes as he liked to throw in a little BS often.
David’s 20 years in retirement were filled doing the things he enjoyed most. Large gardens with hundreds of tomatoes, cabbages, zucchini, and whatever new plant he tried out. He would can tons of tomatoes, ferment/can sauerkraut, make jams, jellies, etc. He combined an attraction to antiques with this hobby using old crocks, slicing boards and stompers. When his fall harvest was done, he was going to Amish growers for “just a few more” tomatoes or heads of cabbage. He always gave 95% of it away to family, friends, neighbors, or someone he just ran into. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage and was very particular about his yard and was always setting flowers, mowing and trimming it, as well as doing the same for neighbors and the local roadways.
He also loved driving the countryside with Edna, leisurely road cruises to look at the hills, valleys, and areas they grew up/worked in. When poor vision and Edna’s onset of Alzheimer’s stopped them from driving a car he got a John Deere Gator to drive around the neighborhood. He said it was safe because at 20 miles an hour he could see fine. He still managed countryside rides and outings with Edna but letting his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren drive.
He spent several years as Edna’s loyal guardian, protector, and provider when she could no longer take care of herself. It took a lot of coaxing from family and his own declining health to finally let her go to a memory care facility in December of 2021. He continued to visit her multiple times a week, always bearing pastry and sweets to try and brighten her day.
David is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edna Buroker; children: David Jr (Silvia), Sandy Meade (Veril), and Janet Stewart (Al); five grandchildren: Bridgit Buroker, Shannon Buroker (Nicole), Chad Meade, Larry Buroker, and Brad Meade (Megan); great-grandchildren, Valerie and Preston Buroker; his siblings, Fernie Rouse (Karl) and Sam Shumate (Pam); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rennie Buroker and Mildred Shumate and his siblings: Jennifer Wolfe, Jim Buroker, Larry Buroker, and Levi Shumate.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the La Farge Free Methodist Church. Pastor Mark Phillips will officiate. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of service with a luncheon to follow. David will be laid to rest at a later date.

Russell "Butch" Lancaster - August 23, 1953 - January 06, 2023

Departed: 01/06/2023 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Russell, or known as Butch by his Family and Friends or as just Russ by many, passed away from a heart attack on Friday, January 6, 2023, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, WI. Russell was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer on 11/28/2022 and had just started chemotherapy two days before his death. He wanted time-whatever he could get - to help his Family make memories. Unfortunately, that Time wasn’t ours to have. Russell I. “Butch” Lancaster was born August 23, 1953, to Russell I. and Dorothy M. Lancaster in Platteville, WI. Butch, as he was named by his sister Jeanne, was raised in Platteville WI with his siblings, Jeanne, Connie, Bruce, Karen, and Molly. Russell graduated from Platteville High School – Class of 1972. Immediately after high school graduation he enlisted in the US Army. He spent his Army career in Germany as a Viet Nam Era Veteran from 1972-1975 when he was honorably discharged.
Russell returned to Platteville and worked at Northern Engraving in Lansing Iowa as Maintenance person of their plant from 1975-1978. He moved to Cashton, WI in 1978 and worked for Charlie Brothers in La Crescent, MN before choosing to further his education. Russell graduated from Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI on May 1984 from the HVAC/Refrigeration Associate Program. He was employed at various HVAC companies in the La Crosse and Vernon County area in a career that spanned 37 years. Winona Heating and Vent, Cargill, Cenex, Paul’s, Master Metals and Flock HVACS in addition to Trane and his own HVAC business. He also had a business installing and maintaining dairy pipelines in the Vernon County area. There really was not anything Russell wouldn’t try – and was the “go to” Guy in every job- hard working, dedicated and helpful to anyone he met. He was a talented wood worker who could create anything - from furniture for his children to tables and shelves for Family. Given an idea he would run with it creating beautiful pieces with love. Russell lived life to the fullest- each and every day. He was dedicated to his Family and there were always the hunting trips - from the Necedah woods and over the years with his boys and Grandchildren - the fishing trips to Lake Arbutus, the Mississippi or a trout stream and his hobbies of gardening and flowers. He loved to grow and to can everything from corn and green beans to gladiolas and pumpkins- always pumpkins for his Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews, and any child that needed a pumpkin. Fall would find him canning the fruits of the garden- with his wife- 400 quarts I believe this fall. He never arrived to visit without a box of “goodies”- his Family never knew what would be in the box- the best dill pickles in the world, sauerkraut to make your eyes roll, his concocted veggie mix he called “hash”, fruits, and jams- you name it. He shared his bounties with everyone he knew- a very generous man. He helped anyone that asked -no questions and usually a “catch me later” in payment. There were annual “Amish Flower Shopping” trips with his Family- Sisters, Jim and daughter in law Stefanie and Grandchildren singing (Christmas songs in April) behind him in the truck- that still makes our heart smile. He was a prankster and loved thinking up something new to torment and tease.
Russell married Peggy Strait Marx on June 8, 1999. Together they raised their blended family, Jessica (Bo) Copeland of Glendale, AZ, Charlie (Stefanie) Lancaster of Memphis, NE, Chris (Becca) Lancaster of LaFarge, WI and step-sons BJ (Trudy) and Dusty (Nicky) Marx. Russell had seven grandchildren- Brice and Ethan Milhone, Libby Ann, Eva, Nolan, Abalene, and Tiny (Austin) Lancaster and five step-Grandchildren Shortcake (Jara) Mickey (Miguel),Everest,Delphia and Gracie Marx- all of which adored and loved by their Grandpa Kitty or Papa. He was just blessed with a Great-Granddaughter Alleah Grace and was so excited to meet her. His freezer and goodie drawer was always stocked with ‘millions” of popsicles and candy. Nothing was ever “off limits” at Papas!! Russell supported his fellow Veterans in Chaseburg, Westby and Viroqua sites and dedicated his life to Family, Friends and Country. Our world will never be the same without his presence but will always be warm with the memories he gave us.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jeffery; his brother, Bruce and wife Shelly; his sister, Karen; brother in law Roger Wallenhorst; nephews, Jonathan White and Steven Wallenhorst; and stepson, Michael Marx and step-granddaughter Scarlet Marx. He is survived by his immediate Family and Sisters Jeanne (Jim) Dawson, Connie (Bruce) White and Molly Wallenhorst and many nieces and nephews.

Darlene R. Hysel - June 26, 1939 - December 30, 2022

Departed: 12/30/2022 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Darlene Rae (Miller) Hysel passed away peacefully mid-afternoon December 30, 2022.
She was born June 26, 1939, to Agnes and Fay Miller who raised their family in the Ottervale area. She was a graduate of the La Farge High School’s Class of ’57. Darlene was crowned Queen of their junior prom, and married her King, Charles Hysel, after they graduated. Family and friends delighted in giving them a Shiveree and they celebrated 62 anniversaries thereafter.
The couple soon made farming their livelihood and lived in the Tunnelville area most of their lives, interrupted by a year on a farm in the Janesville area and about 10 years in Illinois.
Darlene was a hard worker her entire life. In addition to farming and being a homemaker, she would flush mink for an area mink rancher, and she had a number of factory jobs over the years including at Decamet, O’Brien Brothers and Rockwell International in Gardner IL. It was then a move back to Tunnelville. Charles had become employed in OTR truck driving and not liking being alone nor being separated, Darlene made her next career move – she obtained a CDL license, a great accomplishment for a woman at 65! This allowed her the ability to travel with Charles and they became Team drivers under Tri-State Expedited. She finally was able to go far and wide and see many cities and sights; she loved that! Other enjoyments were gardening, canning, cooking, baking, reading, watching Brewers and Packers games. All the hired farmhands would confirm she’s a great cook and all the deer hunters who gathered at the farmhouse each year could attest to her hospitality. Her homemade cinnamon rolls were to live for, and oh so many cakes and pies and bars, too!
Darlene is survived by five of her six children: Steven (Barb Edwards) Hysel, La Crosse; Pamela Hysel, La Farge; Douglas (Kathie) Hysel, Hillsboro; Carl Hysel, Sylvan; Sandra Hysel, Sparta. Sisters and Brother: Anna Rose Collas, Sun Prairie; Minnie Lou Provenzano, Dowagiac MI; Karen Waddell (Lloyd Hargis), Janesville; Bernie (Patty) Miller, La Farge. Survivors also include Great-Aunt Florence Wilkison, 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and “greats,” plus many friends, especially loyal friends Cookie Potter and Janet Williams.
Preceding her in death were Husband, Charles; Son, K.C. Hysel; a sister, Marilyn Ernst; a brother, Larry Miller; Brothers/Sisters-in-Law George Collas, Floyd Waddell, Ralph Provenzano, Harvey “Skip” Ernst, Danny Hysel, Charlotte Hysel and Bob Hysel; Grandson Joshua McCauley; Nephews David Waddell, Darrin Waddell, Jeff Collas.

Mark James Heckart - February 05, 1958 - October 10, 2022

Departed: 10/10/2022 (La Farge)
Obituary Preview: Mark James Heckart, the beloved son of Richard and Nanalee (Pacl) Heckart, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022, a year after his father, at the age of 64. He was born at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. He attended Kindergarten in Fremont, Nebraska and grade school and high school in La Farge, Wisconsin. After graduation, he worked at the feed mill in La Farge for Lee Gudgeon. He also worked for his father who at that time was in the plumbing and soft water business. He delivered the salt for the softeners to the customers. Later, he went to work at Elroy Rayovac for a couple of years. Then, he went to work for Clarence Jeffers for 13 years in the body shop. This was a job he dearly loved, restoring people’s cars and trucks and some of Clarence’s bigger equipment. He also worked at a dealership in Tomah.
Due to health conditions, he started making all kinds of crafts out of different kinds of wood for 13 years, from small shelves to large pieces of furniture. He and his mother attended craft fairs for another 13 years in La Farge, Ontario, Cashton, Kendall, and Viola.
Mark made four box gardens for his yard and two box gardens for his mother’s yard. That is how we raised our gardens waist high for easy picking and weeding all kinds of plants. Each year Mark would can 50 quarts of tomato juice for his mom from a section of one of those gardens. Each year they were fertilized, and the dirt dug deep. He bought a large farm gate, cut it in half and placed it in a couple box gardens to have the cucumbers rise onto, making it high for picking. Imagine reaching above your head to pick cucumbers.
Mark was a very good cook. He made his own seasonings and had them to share with his friends. Mark had many talents and even worked, no matter how painful he became. He took care of his father the last two months of his father’s life, treating him to all special kinds of things to eat.
After his father died, he made arrangements for his mother to be taken care of. Mark had a SPECIAL LOVE for his mother and father, and all the things he did for us over his 64 years of life. May God rest his body and soul in Heaven. Tell Dad hi and be looking for me soon!!
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Rockton Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.

Audrey was an avid reader and always loved a good book. She also loved her time in the kitchen and entertaining others with post-game gatherings, card parties, and family events. Anybody that knew her remembers her as an outstanding cook that brought great of joy to anybody lucky enough to eat her cooking.
During her early and mid-adult years, she loved canoeing with her family, and she was a passionate bowler accumulating many awards including an amateur singles state championship. She also loved decorating her homes for whatever the next holiday or season was. Later in life, she formed a special bond with some people in the Amish community and took great pride in providing them transportation and various other forms of service. Above all else, nothing was more important nor brought more joy to Audrey than her family. She always went above and beyond her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. With a generous and joyful heart, she always extended everything that she had to offer to take care of her family. Her giving spirit was such that she would give the coat off her back if it meant keeping somebody else warm.
Audrey is survived by PeeWee, her husband of over 64+ years; her children: Deb Ham (63) and husband Danny of Pardeeville, Mark (61) of LaFarge, and Jim (58) of Lake Mills, WI; her grandchildren: Craig Fay (41) of Cambria, WI, Scott Fay (36) of Oregon, WI, David “DJ” Clift (31) of Lake Mills, Brett Clift (26) and wife Jessica of Sun Prairie, WI, Jessica “Jessie” Clift (21) of Port Edwards, WI, adopted grandson Andrew Kaminsky (27) of LaCrosse; great grandson, Archer “Archie” Clift (3) of Sun Prairie, WI; and nephews, Tom Ernst (64) and wife Karen of LaFarge and Tim Ernst (61) of Winona, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, “Butch and Evie” Ernst; brother, Harvey “Skip” Ernst; and grandson, William “Will” Clift of Lake Mills, WI.
Per Audrey’s request, there will not be a funeral, but a small family dinner and get-together. There will be a social gathering for those wishing to visit PeeWee and the family on November 5, 2022, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the LaFarge Community Center.
A very special thank you to all of those who visited both Audrey and PeeWee during her time in nursing care and to the compassionate hospice care at Wisconsin Dells Healthcare.

After her 8th grade graduation from Johnny Cake School the family moved to Bear Creek in rural Viola, WI, where she attended West Lima High School, graduating in 1940.
