Obituary Preview: Wanda Marie Nash passed away Monday, August 15, 2022.  She was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 2, 1962 the daughter of George and Mary Major Nash.  She graduated from Prairie View High School.  Marie worked for many years in the food service department at Swan Manor Nursing Home in La Cygne.  She was an avid reader, and talented painter and crafter.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Terry Nash, and a sister, Denise Nash.  Marie is survived by four brothers, Jeremy, Keith, David and Jackie Nash, four sisters, Brenda Nash, Alice Warren, Kathy Querry, and Amanda Nash, nieces nephews extended family and friends.

William John Adair, Sr. - January 14, 1948 - August 09, 2022

Obituary Preview: William John Adair, age 74, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2022.  He was born on January 14, 1948 in Kansas City, Kansas the son of Thomas and Lucy(Donley) Adair.  He began his working career being employed at the loading dock.  He eventually went to work for Kansas City Cold Storage.  It was here he was introduced to the trucking industry.  This began a lifelong career as an over the road truck driver.  Bill was united in marriage to his wife, Amanda Jones, on August 13, 1982.  Together they lived in Kansas City, Kansas, Colorado and finally in Memphis, Tennessee. Bill moved to the La Cygne area after the death of Amanda on May 17, 2019.  Bill recently suffered a stroke and then needed a hip replacement.  After these two problems he moved into Louisburg Health Care and Rehab to rehab and hopefully move back home with his granddaughter, Lacy.  While a resident, he made many friends including a special friend, Bob.  As a young man, Bill enjoyed playing baseball, pinball and fishing.  He took up bowling and playing pinochle, and liked to watch the World Poker Tour.  Every year, Bill and Amanda made sure a trip was taken in his RV.  The trips included stops all over the country to visit family and friends.   Bill was also preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Diana, and Deanna, a brother, Manny, and a granddaughter, Jane.  He is survived by a son, William Adair, Jr.(Misty), two brothers, Thomas Adair(Hazel), and Danny Saunders, two sisters, Darlene Orender, and Ida Sutherland(Frank), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Rosetta May Beard - June 02, 1923 - August 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Rosetta May Beard, age 99, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022.  She was born on June 2, 1923 in Boicourt, Kansas the daughter of Donald and Loretta(Conley) McGinnis.  Her father passed away when Rosetta was only three years old.  At the age of thirteen, the family moved to Seattle, Washington.  Rosetta was united in marriage to Frank Houston Beard on April 11, 1942.  She then traveled with Frank during his time in the United States Army.  After Frank's discharge, they both went to work for a department store working until retirement.  After retirement they resided in Florida until after Frank's death  on March 29, 2003.  She was also preceded in death by her parents.  Rosetta was a member of the Teamsters Union.  She enjoyed animals, especially cats.  She acquired a taste for Asian culture during the time Frank was in the Army.  She liked to walk the beach and collect sea shells, loved to travel, and cherry nut ice cream.  She celebrated her ninety ninth birthday with family, enjoying cake and balloons.  She seldom went to the doctor, never took any medications and still had her own teeth.  Rosetta is survived by two half brothers, Sid and Gary Jarvis, extended family and friends.

Bonnie Lou Tolly - October 19, 1927 - July 21, 2022

Obituary Preview: Bonnie Lou Tolly, age 94, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022.  She was born on October 19, 1927 in Spokane, Washington, the daughter of Charley and Myrtle Fransen Kirk.  She was united in marriage to Lester Tolly on April 5, 1944 in Jay, Oklahoma.  He preceded her in death on November 14, 1990.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Raymond Tolly, a brother, Stanley Kirk, a sister, Marie Grissom, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.  Bonnie worked as a seamstress and was a baby sitter.  The two most important things in her life was her relation with Jesus and her family.  Bonnie kept her ornery spirit up until the very end.  She was a member of the New Life Baptist Church.  She enjoyed gardening, playing Scrabble, painting and sewing.  She made and donated lap throws, bibs, and baby clothes to any organization that was in need. Bonnie is survived by three sons, Jimmy (Deborah), Johnny (Marcia) and Lewis Tolly, two daughters, Glorianna (Everett) Ford, and Margaret Melendy, seventeen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and numerous great great grandchildren.

Edwin Leon Dennis - February 14, 1957 - June 28, 2022

Obituary Preview: Edwin Leon Dennis, born in Mountain Grove, Missouri on February 14, 1957 to Angilee and Leon Dennis, died unexpectedly on June 28, 2022 at the age of 65.  Edwin resided in Linn Valley, Kansas.  Throughout his life he was an avid rodeo cowboy, hunter, fisherman, welder, mechanic, handyman, and jack of all trades.  Edwin is survived by two siblings, his older sister, Charlotte Becker(John) of Butler, Missouri and a younger brother, Terry Dennis(Shirley) of Booneville, Arkansas.  Edwin was an uncle to many, and known to most as "Uncle Ed".  He was an ornery uncle and would walk by with knuckle rubs  on the head to Tracy Parks, Roger Parks, Janet Wason(James), and Teri-Rae Taylor(John).  Edwin is also survived by many great nephews and nieces that he loved spending time with, AJ Smith(Kim), Matthew Garr, Britney Winkler(Zach), Roger Parks Jr., Logan Parks, Cassie Wason, Jordan Taylor, and John Taylor.  He also had many great-great nieces and nephews that he adored to be around.  He is also survived by one aunt, Wanda Hardy, and two uncles, Wendell Dennis(Sharon) and Randall Dennis(Jan).  Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Obituary Preview: Harold Raymond Long, age 91, Paola, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022.  He was born in Jingo, Kansas on March 17, 1931 the son of George "Ivan" and Norma Russell Long.  He graduated valedictorian from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1951.  He attended Pittsburg State University for one year.  After high school he served his country in the United States National Guard.  Harold worked as a farmer, for Bendix and later retired from KDOT.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Leonard, George, and Dennis Long, and a sister, Berniece Ryan.  Harold is survived by ten nieces and nephews, Judy Patterson, Jerry Long, Joy Saxton, JoAnn Burtness, John Ryan, Rebecca Ryan, Patrick Ryan, Maria Artzinger-Bolten, Robert Long, and Kathy Schlegel, seventeen great nieces and nephews, and eight great great nieces and nephews.

She was born May 16, 1927, in Bacca County, Colorado, the daughter of Arthur Leonard and Ruth Elizabeth (Hensley) Conley. She attended the Mesa View Grade School in Colorado. At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Linn County, Kansas. There she attended Stony Point and Fair View grade schools and the La Cygne and Pleasanton high schools. After graduation from Pleasanton High School in 1945, she was employed by the Braemoor Coat Factory in Paola, Kansas. In 1946, she attended Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas. She then taught in the Boicourt Kansas Grade School. On August 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harvey A. LaMar in La Cygne, Kansas. To this union, one daughter and three sons were born. Eva was a member of the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church in Olathe, Kansas, where she sang in the church choir and was active in many church functions including: Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Librarian, Secretary and President of the Christian Women's Fellowship Group. Eva was active in the Little League Baseball Mothers Club for many years. She was a life member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, VFW Post 3712. She was a member of NARFE Chapter 2098 and KOFP&SMarmaton Valley, Fort Scott, Kansas. Eva worked for the TG&Y store and Patrons Insurance in Olathe, Kansas. She worked for the IRS in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1960 to 1964, the Selective Service in Olathe, Kansas, from 1966 to 1968, and the United States Department of Agriculture from 1968 to 1992. After retirement, she worked part time for H&R Block in Paola, Kansas. Eva was united in marriage to John W. Frazee on January 3, 1994. Eva was preceded in death by her first husband Harvey A. LaMar on January 28, 1988; daughter Ruth Marie Fuller; son Rick LaMar; a granddaughter; a great grandson; parents Arthur and Ruth Conley; siblings Earl Conley, Arthur Conley Jr., Marjorie Prentice, Louise Crisler; and second husband John W. Frazee on January 20, 2021. Eva is survived by two sons Buddy LaMar (Brenda, children Leslie and Andy) and Jerry Lee LaMar (Elaine, daughter Chloe); three stepsons Tommy (Jerri) Frazee, Lonnie Frazee, and Ronnie Lee (Kathy) Frazee; two sisters Marian Hayes and Leola Mundell; sister-in-law Anita Conley; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11 am Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Burial will immediately follow in the Brooklyn Cemetery. Obituary Preview: Patrick Wayne Marmon, age 79, Paola, Kansas passed away Wednesday June 8, 2022.  He was born in La Cygne, Kansas on August 26, 1942 the son of Harry and Mamie Wilderson Marmon.  He graduated from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1961.  He was united in marriage to Terry Tyrell in 1963.  He was employed as a painter working locally before moving to Meeker, Colorado working for Rio Blanco County.   He then moved to California and managed a duck hunting club.  He was very involved in protecting and hatching duck eggs through the D10 Wild Duck Eggs Salvage.  Patrick enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.  He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers, Kenneth, Clayton, Harry Ed, Harold, Kermit, Jay, Bob and Mike.  Patrick is survived by his wife, Terry Marmon, son, Shawn Marmon and sixteen young men he fostered and raised, daughter, Sherri Collmer and her children, Chase and Trey Collmer, and numerous great grandchildren.

Alice Laverne Widner - March 18, 1931 - June 05, 2022

Obituary Preview: Alice Laverne Stude Widner was born March 18, 1931 in Haskell County, Kansas to John and Grace Jones Stude.  She grew up and attended school in Copeland, Kansas.  She departed this life June 5, 2022.  On September 4, 1949, Alice married LaMonte(Lem) Widner and they spent the first few years of their married life in New Jersey where their son, Jim, and daughter Roselynn, were born.  They returned to Copeland, Kansas in 1955 and lived there until 1965.  During that time, Alice was busy raising her children, now numbering four with the addition of son, Danny, and daughter, Jeannie.  In 1965, Alice and Lem and family moved to El Dorado Springs, Missouri where they owned and operated the C&H Motel.  Alice also had a part-time job as a disc-jockey with the local radio station, KESM.  In 1970 the family moved to La Cygne, Kansas.  Alice and Lem worked for the Allendale Camps as caretakers.  A few years later they moved to Trading Post to run the Trading Post Museum.  In 1998, Lem lost his battle with cancer.  Alice continued to run the museum until 2014 when she finally retired at the age of 82.  During the years at Trading Post, Alice wrote a byline, "Trading Post News", for the county newspaper, The  Linn County News.  She usually included local historical tidbits in her articles.  Alice became a devoted genealogist of local families and often gathered information for out-of-county people who had ancestors from this area.  She was also a Civil War buff and became an expert on Linn County and its part in the Civil War.  After retiring, Alice moved to La Cygne and had her own apartment.  She enjoyed being an advisor, and a surrogate mother and grandmother to her friends and neighbors in her apartment complex.  At the age of 90, Alice was no longer able to live by herself.  She moved to the Louisburg Healthcare and Rehab Center and lived her remaining days there.  Those of her family called home before her include her parents, five brothers, Lawrence, Howard, John, Vernon and Frank, and a sister, June StudeSumpter.  Her husband, Lem, son, Danny and his wife Cathy, daughter, Jeannie, and her husband, John Orth, daughter-in-law, Sherry Widner and grandson, Matthew Widner, also pre-deceased her.   Those surviving include a son, Jim Widner, of Adrian, MIssouri, and daughter, Roselynn, and her husband, Wilbur Armstrong, of La Cygne.  Surviving grandchildren are Jeremy, Jennifer, and Jared(Lindsey) Armstrong, Dustin(Lauren) Widner, Logan(Lisa) Widner, Jodi(James) Meeks, Katie(Brent) Knop, Alexis Widner, and Krystal(Austin) Davidson.  Alice also had 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 11 am Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at the Calvary Baptist Church, La Cygne, Kansas.  Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, June 21 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel.  Private burial later in Riverview Cemetery.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Linn County Historical Society.  Online condolences can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.

Susan Marie Pease - September 02, 1937 - June 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Susan Marie Ross Pease, age 84, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Friday, June 3, 2022.  She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 2, 1937 the daughter of Dan and Marie Potter Ross.  She graduated from La Cygne Rural High School in the Class of 1955.  She attended Pittsburg State University and later Kansas State University receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.  Susan was united in marriage to her high-school sweetheart Donald M. Pease on June 15, 1957, and together they spent 48 years devoted to each other.
Together they built a life they loved, filled with laughter, travel, and adventure. A large part of her life centered around the Linn County Bank, owned by the family from 1946 - 2000, of which she was an integral member of the daily operations and the Board of Directors. Susan has been a life-long member of the LaCygne United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed being the organist for 20 years. She was an active member of P.E.O and Past State president, as well as a member of Junior Service League in Olathe, Woman of Year for Alpha Sigma Alpha, proud member of the K-State Singers, and most recently served on the Finance Committee for Tallgrass Creek and took pleasure in being a member of the ukulele group.
Don preceded her in death on July 15, 2005.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Linda Mary Ross DeHoff.  Susan is survived by two daughters, Danna Ahnemann and husband Gregg, and Donna Sue Foreman and husband Patrick, two nieces, Brandy Kalinka and Kristin Ross that she treated and loved as her own, three grandchildren, Daniel Peterson, Donielle Edwards, and Dalinda Foreman, six great grandchildren, Layken, Casen, Henry, Charlotte, Violet, and London, and two step grandchildren, John Ahnemann, Diana Ahnemann Torgerson.
Funeral service will be 2 pm Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the La Cygne United Methodist Church.  Private family committal service at a later date in Oak Lawn Cemetery.  Susan will lie in state from 1 pm to 6 pm Monday June 6, 2022 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel.  Memorial contributions are suggested to P.E.O. Chapter C.V., or La Cygne United Methodist Church.  Online condolences can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.

Esther Eveline Shields - July 20, 1933 - May 29, 2022

Obituary Preview: Esther Eveline Phalen Johnston Shields Esther was born on a farm southeast of La Cygne July 20, 1933. She was the second daughter to Bernard L. and Dorothy Lucille Good Phalen. She started her journey to be with her savior on May 29, 2022 at Olathe Health Hospice House. Esther was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Dorothy, sister Betty Sue Phalen Eberts and husband Walter Raymond Shields. Esther is survived by her children Robert Bernard Johnston and wife Susan, Laura Dennae Shields Burke and William Alan Shields and wife Kelley. Three grandsons Corey Jason Burke and wife Natalie, Philip Phalen Johnston and wife Nikki and Matthew Vincent Johnston and wife Jacquie. She also leaves 8 very special great grand-children. Esther was very proud of her children and the wonderful families they created. She gave up her senior year of high school to marry Roy Noble Johnston on July 22, 1951. To this union Robert Bernard Johnston was born May 30, 1953. Although they divorced in 1954 they remained lifelong friends. On December 11, 1954 Esther married Walter Raymond Shields and to this union Laura Dennae Shields and William Alan Shields were born. Esther returned to school in the fall of 1962 graduating with the class of 1963. Even though this was a very busy year for her the accomplishment was well worth the effort and she made many lifelong friends. Esther worked in many jobs over her years. In her teen years she worked for Grace Gettings in her café and helped her parents in the Mobil Gas station at 4th & Market Street. Other jobs included helping mom in Phalen’s Café, book keeper for Wade Quarry, City Clerk for both La Cygne and Pleasanton for nearly 25 years. She also catered alumni banquets as well as weddings and rehearsal dinners. She was also a certified Emergency Medical Technician working for both Linn County and Osawatomie Ambulance service. During the construction of the power plant she bought two houses along Market Street to provide rooms for construction workers along with most evening meals. Esther had many special skills. Among them was singing which she shared with her church and, as requested, many funerals and weddings. She also loved to paint becoming a certified instructor. She set up shop in the old City Hall building as Esther’s Easel, teaching and sharing her art with others. She was also an avid quilter and her family and friends enjoy many of them. She was always available for any project that would improve her home town, La Cygne. She volunteered her time to the La Cygne and Linn County Historical Society, La Cygne Alumni Board, Lincoln Township Secretary/Treasurer, Lincoln and Scott Township Hospital Board as well as the La Cygne City Council.
Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the Calvary Baptist Church, La Cygne, Kansas.  Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Friday, June 3 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel.  Contributions are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church, La Cygne Historical Society or Olathe Hospice House.  Online condolences can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.
