Obituary Preview: Ulyses ‘Sheen’ Burt, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024.
Born on August 2, 1947, to Russell and Marie (Morgan) Burt in Oxford Mississippi, Ulyses found his faith early in life, confessing his hope in Christ at Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi. He later relocated to Aurora, Illinois, where he became a dedicated member of Progressive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Robert Wesby and later Dr. Roy R. Brown. He served faithfully as an usher for many years and never lost his love for gospel music which brought a smile to his face.
One of twelve children, Ulyses possessed a natural curiosity and a love for working with his hands. He could take anything apart and put it back together. A talent that extended to his passion for cars. When outdoors, you could often find him enjoying nature or dominating the bowling alley with his signature curved ball. He was also a talented cook who enjoyed creating delicious meals and sharing them with his family and friends. For over 30 years, Ulyses was a dedicated employee at Allied Lock in St. Charles, later relocating to Dixon, Illinois. He retired in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his children: Ulyses Patrick (Feleisha) Burt Jr. of Detroit MI, Vanessa Burt or Redford MI, Valerie (Charles) Burt of Oxford MS, Rachel (Jaymes) Waller of Aurora IL, and Shala Carter (bonus child) of Houston TX; his grandchildren: Brittiny, Brandi, Shanita, Jaymes II, Jaxson, Pa'Jaye, Jada, and Aria; his great-grandchild: Jaylen; his sisters: Hattie Mae Fondren of Batesville MS, Mary Market Burt and Gwen Trotter both of Chicago IL, Margret Burt of Atlanta GA, Lois Burt of Aurora IL, and Dessie (Jimmie) Jones of Oxford MS; his brothers: James (Mattie) Burt of Oxford MS, Johnny (Jean) Burt and Andrew (Betty) Burt both of Aurora IL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his brothers: Willie and Leslie ‘Preacher’ Burt and bonus son: Gabriel ‘Punch’ McKinney. Ulyses will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Barbie Jean Saunders - January 22, 1957 - April 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: Barbie Jean Mathis was born on January 22, 1957, in Alton, Illinois, to the late Joe Willie Mathis Sr. “Joe Bill” and Annie Laura Slate Mathis.  Soon after she was born, they returned home to Oxford, Mississippi, with family to start their life.
Barbie Jean grew up in West Springhill Community of Oxford and enjoyed spending time with family and friends throughout the neighborhood. She received her early education in the Oxford Public School District, graduating with the Oxford High School class of 1975. Cooking delicious meals, taking care of her siblings, sewing, and designing clothing was just some of the gifts and talents that God blessed her with.   In 1979, at the age of 22, she decided to leave her hometown of Oxford, with her daughter, Shunetta, and began her new life in St. Louis, Missouri, where she stayed for more than 40 years.
Barbie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Rivers Hill Church of Christ in Oxford, Mississippi.  She later united with Oil of God Church, in St. Louis, Missouri, under the leadership of Apostle Ariette Williams.  In 2017, she returned home to Oxford, Mississippi and united in fellowship with His Harvest Ministries, under the leadership of Apostle Eyvonne Smith.
Barbie’s career began as a computer software engineer with Kellwood Company, Federal Reserve Bank, EDS, Verizon Wireless, and later retiring after 18 years of service from The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department as an IT engineer.
Barbie continued her educational journey and received her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a double Master’s in Business Management and Public Health, respectively, from Colorado Technical University.  She was on her way to pursuing her Doctorate degree when her mother fell ill 2017.
In 1984, Barbie met her beloved husband, Elbert Saunders, who proceeded her in death and to this union, two children were born (Nikisha Catherine and Nicholas Andrew). Barbie loved to be an angel to her family and friends and would help whenever and however you needed her.  She was truly a blessing, with a huge heart and a smile that would light up a room.  Her beauty and style were the epitome of elegance and good taste.
We never know the path God has for us, but we accept His Will and follow His path. Barbie’ path was redirected suddenly and on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at “Evelyn’s House Hospice Facility” in St. Louis, Missouri, her journey on this path was completed when she received the highest degree possible, her Doctorate of Eternal Life.
To cherish her memory, Barbie leaves three children, her daughters: Shunetta Marie (Kevin) Daugherty and Nikisha Catherine (Keith) McKinney, and her son: Nicholas Andrew, all of St. Louis, MO,  2 step sons Kirk Saunders and Dewayne Powell both of St. Louis, MO; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson: Kyren Jaran; 5 brothers: Joe Willie Mathis Jr., of Oxford, MS, Eddie Mathis of Olive Branch, MS, David and Daniel Mathis of Davenport, IA, and Calvin Mathis of Waukegan, IL; brother in law: Albert (Laquita) Saunders of St. Louis, MO; 2 aunts: Cassie Washington of St. Louis, MO and Faye (L.C.) Turner of St. Louis, MO; and 1 uncle: Roscoe Slate of Oxford, MS.  She also leaves to cherish her memory a special friend: Joe Barr and his daughter, Kaylee Barr; parents: Oddis & Loretta Barr and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Beverly Jean Nabors, daughter of the late Willie Fred Nabors and Claytie Evelyn Fisher Nabors, was born June 10, 1960 at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Beverly accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Jeffrie Chapel Missionary Baptis Church in Abbeville, MS.  In later years, she became a member of East St. Peter MB Church in Abbeville, MS, where she remained a member until her death.
She attended Gordon Elementary School in Abbeville, MS; Lafayette Elementary/Junior High/High School in Oxford, MS; Aurora Central High School, Aurora Colorado. Beverly was employed with Emerson Electric Company in Oxford, Mississippi for 0ver 20 years as a line worker, until retiring in 2005. Afterwards, she was employed at Belk's Department Store in Oxford, Mississippi, where she worked in retail sales. She loved fashion, especially pink and denim.
Beverly was a proud mother of three loving daughters, LaShonda, Shonta, and Ashley, and she was a woman who always wore a smile and never met a stranger. If you enjoyed a good conversation, then talk to Beverly, you would definitely get a good conversation.
Over the years, Beverly endured many health challenges and fought a good physical fight. However, she knew that the battle was not hers, it was the Lord's. So, early Sunday morning, April 21, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS, she said "I'm standing still, and I'm going to let The Lord fight my battle."  At 12:02 a.m. she was pronounced the winner of the battle, and she received the victory.
Beverly is lovingly remembered by her amazing daughters: LaShonda Shamekia Nabors and  Shonta LaTeshia Nabors (Tyrone) Williams, both of Memphis TN; and Ashley Monique Nabors of Oxford, MS; her sisters: Shari (Michael) Thomas of Madison MS, Angela (James) Whitfield of Memphis, TN, Joyce Nabors Mathis, Fulton, MS; sister-in-law  Anita Nabors, special sister/brother cousins: Cheretha Mithcell Yarber, James Elwood Mitchell, Darrell Bernard Mitchell, Jan Kay Sandra Mitchell; one aunt Mary (Earnest) Shumpert, Fulton, MS; Her special friend: Robert Smith, Sr.; ten (10) grandchildren (one that she raised: Montrael Shunvonte Nabors); and two great grandchildren: and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.

Obituary Preview: Laneika Bershell Wright, daughter of Luster and Gwen King, was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi, on November 25, 1980. "Neika," as she was affectionately known, was a beautiful, joyful child. She received her education in the Oxford School district and was a graduate of Oxford High School's class of 1999, where she was a member of the OHS Band. Neika continued her educational journey receiving her B.S. Degree and Master's Degree from the University of Phoenix and University of North Carolina at Pembroke, respectively. She was currently enrolled at The University of Florida College of Education pursing a doctoral degree.
Raised in a Christian home, Laneika accepted Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church where she worshipped and sang in the youth choir as a child. She was the proud mother of two wonderful children, Cameron and Taylor.
Laneika and her family moved to Florida in 2022, where she gained employment with IMG Academy, a preparatory boarding school in Bradenton, Florida, as a teacher. Laneika was married to  Alexander Wright, Jr., and with him, she gained two bonus children, Chance and Awilli.
Laneika fought a hard battle, knowing that in the end, she was going to win. On Friday morning, April 12th, 2024, while in Orlando Bay Front Hospital, she won and gained her victory wings when her battle ended. (Faith isn't about asking God to stop the storm. Faith is about trusting God to help you through the storm) Her storm is over.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband: Alexander Wright, Jr. of Bradenton, FL; her children: Cameron Davis of El Paso, TX and Taylor Davis of Winston-Salem, NC; her bonus children: Chance Wright and Awilli Wright of Jacksonville, FL; her parents: Luster and Gwen King of Oxford, MS: her sisters: Sylvia Dixon of Southaven, MS and Dr. Candy P. Jenkins of Birmingham, AL, her nephew: Brien Kimmons of Southaven, MS; and her mother-in-law: Rosanna Wright of Fayetteville, NC. Dewanna attended Oxford High School. On September 18, 2015, she blessed the family with our “Miracle Baby” Carter Blake Messiah Holmes, her only son and her bonus daughter, Zy’Kerria Harris.
Dewanna was raised in church and embodied her love for Christ. She had such a special gift to inspire others. Dewanna was impetuous about family time, fashion, “looking good”, and creative crafts, but most passionate about being a mom to her loving son, Carter. On April 5, 2024, Dewanna transitioned peacefully at her residence to be with the Lord.

He was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age at The Way, Truth, and Life Apostolic Faith Church. He received his education at the Lafayette school district and later received his GED. He began his employment with Martin Painting Service with his father, Barney Martin Sr. Later, he moved to Texas and became a self-employed contractor. He was passionate about music, fishing, hunting, and caring for animals. Most of all, he loved his family.
Even though his family loved him very much, God loved him more. On Tuesday March 26, 2024, he was called home after a car crash. He will be missed deeply by his family and all that loved him.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Adolph Carr, was born January 16, 1944, to the late Reedie and Eulene Wright Carr in Batesville, Mississippi. Adolph accepted Christ at an early age and united with Eureka A.M.E. Zion Church. He received his early education at Patton Lane High School.
Adolph, affectionately known as "Hoppy," enjoyed outdoor life. He loved to play baseball. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and farm work and worked on the farm for John David Johnson. He was united in matrimony to Emma Thomas.
Hoppy loved to laugh and he never met a stranger. Everybody was his friend. He loved his great great grandnieces and nephews, and not only did he love the children in his family, he loved all children. On Wednesday, March 24, 2024, at Batesville Nursing Home, Hoppy closed his eyes and went peacefully went to the other side. When he opened his eyes on the other side, awaiting him with open were his parents: Reedie and Eulene Carr;  his sister: Robbie Carr Brassell: his brothers: George Wright, Robert Carr, and Walter Carr; his nephew: Stanley Wayne Carr; and other relatives. What a great family reunion. Welcome Home.

Obituary Preview: Sherrita LaShae "Shae" Murray, also affectionately called "Pooh Bear" and "Rat," was born January 11, 1983, in Oxford, Mississippi, and was the oldest of two children born to the union of James and Bettie Young.
Shae accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Hammitt Hill United Methodist, which later merged with Burns United Methodist Church which later became known as Oxford First United Methodist Church. Shae was very active in church. She sang in the Inspirational Choir and worked with the youth along with Minister Tressie. She loved singing and sung with a gospel quartet group called "Faith" which later became known as "One Accord" where she was lead singer.
She received her education in the Oxford School District and graduated from Oxford High School. Shae continued her educational studies at the University of Mississippi and was presently working on her Bachelor's Degree. Shae was blessed with a son, TyVuyrea "Ty" and she gained a bonus daughter, Heaven, in 2020, when she married her soul mate, Neil Murray.
Shae begin her employment with Larson's Big Star and Angel Ranch, but with a desire to be the best that she could be, she was determined to move up a little higher. So she pursued other jobs at the University of Mississippi, in places like the Counseling Center, South Oxford Center (SOC), The Law School, and the Math & Science Building.
Shae was raised in church and she loved her church. She had a passion for singing and cooking, and she loved her family. Even though her family loved her very much, God loved her more and on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, while in Baptist Memorial Hospital/NM, Sherita LaShae Murray, received a call from the one who loved her most, letting her know that her battle was over and He needed her to take His hand and she went home to be with the Lord.
She will be missed deeply missed by her family and all that loved her. She leaves a legacy of memories with the love of her life, her husband: Neil Murray of Oxford MS; her son: TyVuyrea "Ty" Campbell and her bonus daughter: Heaven Murray, both of Oxford MS; her parents: James and Betty Young of Oxford MS; her brother: Kevin Young of Oxford MS; her father and mother-in-law: Hubert and Stella Murray of Oxford MS; her nieces and nephews: Kasiyah, Anijah, Kaiden, Kileigh, Ashton, and Alondyn; two great aunts: Georgia Bryant and Emma Perry both of Oxford MS; best friend: Rhonda Bush; and a host of close aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: A native of Lafayette County, Mildred N. Egerson was born May 11, 1919, to the late Jerry and Vermacy Holt Norphlet and was the eldest of ten children. Mildred received her early education at Mt. Hope School and Taylor Vocational High School. She confessed a hope in Christ at Mt. Hope M. B. Church at an early age and served faithfully until her health no longer allowed her to physically attend. In her years of church ministry, she served on the Mother’s Board, Sunday School Teacher, Sick and Prayer List,  Choir Member, Mission Ministry, B.T.U. and Bible Study
Mildred was united in matrimony to the late Reverend Lee Egerson on February 10, 1935, and to this union, 12 children were born.  She was gainfully employed at the Oxford-Lafayette County Hospital (presently known as Baptist Memorial Hospital – North MS). While there, she held the positions of Laundry Press Operator and later Operating Room Transporter. She retired after twenty-seven years of dedicated service.
Mildred was the kind of woman that asked very little of others, yet shared of herself through her gardening, cooking, canning, and raising baby chickens. She also enjoyed working in her flower bed and making sure that her grand,  great grand and great-great grandchildren had breakfast before school. In 1950, "Emeritus Matron Mildred" became a member of The Heroines of Jericho, Taylor Court #95, where she held various positions, such as: Assistant Secretary, Secretary, and Most Ancient Matron. She was a member of the Loyal Lady Herald of the Golden Circle in Oxford, MS and received the Elnora McGowan Award in Jackson, MS, in 2015 and she loved it when the family got together for 5th Sunday Dinners and Christmas Dinners.
On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, with her loving family by her side, Mildred departed this life and went home to receive her heavenly wings. She will be forever loved, and her legacy cherished and carried on by her surviving six children: Luther (JoAnn) Egerson, and Relva (CW) Hairston of Taylor, MS, Cenora McGee of Oxford, MS, Vermacy D. Corbitt of Taylor, MS, Alma (Lynn) Corbitt of Jackson, MS, and Thelma (Jimmy) Willingham of Taylor, MS; her daughter-in-law: Earlene Egerson of Racine, WI. And the family tree branches spread to 45 grandchildren, 112 great grandchildren, 133 great-great grandchildren, 14 great-great-great grandchildren.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parents: Jerry and Vermacy Holt Norphlet; her husband: Reverend Lee Egerson; her children: Nina B. Brown, Cora Johnson, Mildred J. Townsend, Wesley Egerson, Martha Ivy and Jeremiah Egerson; her brothers: McKinley Norphlet, James Norphlet, Hezekiah Norphlet, Moses Lockhart, and Twilton Lockhart; her sisters: Geneva Egerson, Cherry Tyson, Emma Rockette, Mae Phyllis Fondren, and Lorinne Lockhart.
All things are possible through Jesus Christ, who strengthens me (Phil: 4:13). A godly mother is the launching pad that provides the rocket our young children need to soar, so they can reach those high levels of success. We thank God for the gift of family because this is the tie that binds us to one another in sickness and health or joy and sorrow.

Glen, as he was affectionately known, accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church in Argo, IL, and was a graduate of Argo Community High School where he played basketball.
After high school, Glen enlisted in the United States Army and served from June 30, 1988, to April 9, 1993. In 2003, Glen relocated from Illinois to Oxford, Mississippi where he then joined Clear Creek M.B. Church and gained employment with Whirlpool Corporation. In 2010, he enrolled at Northwest Community College pursuing a trade in welding.
Glen was united in matrimony to Carolyn Annette Coleman-Beene. He was a lover of the Chicago Bears and enjoyed watching baseball. Even though Glen was VERY afraid of a small little fish that he caught on his first fishing outing with his mother, he truly gained a love for fishing as an adult.
On Sunday, March 10, 2024, Glen made his transition to a new home, and he leaves to cherish his memory, his wife: Carolyn Beene of Crenshaw, MS; his mother: Florence (Wall Doxey) Lynch of Oxford, MS; two sons: Glendon Beene, Jr. of Atlanta, GA and Andrew Beene of Douglasville, GA; a daughter: DeGenira Beene of Germany and grandson: Braxton Beene;  and two sisters: Renetta M. Griffin of Las Vegas, NV and Lana L. Kennedy of Grandview, IL; Glen is also remembered by many other family members and friends. Murray was honorably discharged in 1979 with the rank of SGT. He was employed at Georgia Pacific Corporation  and Roseburg Plant in Oxford, Mississippi. His favorite past time was traveling.
Murray was married to Mary 'Tina" (Jones) Sisk and to this union three daughters were born, Tashara Jones, Toinetta Sisk and Tish Sisk. He later united in matrimony to Elizabeth Tallie Jones and they remained together for 24 years before the Lord saw fit to call him home.
Murray departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. Obituary Preview: Edna Rene (Pegues) Dickens was born August 2, 1953 to the late Pauline (Hilliard) Pegues and Henderson Nolan Pegues.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Philadelphia M.B. Church where she served on the Usher Board, Choir Member and on the church finance committee.
Edna graduated from Oxford High School with the Class of 1972. She retired from the University of Mississippi after 20 years of service at the University's Physical Plant. She was also a Foster grandparent at NMRC and worked at Cobra Security.
Edna was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Philadelphia Chapter 287, where she served as Treasurer. She was a member of the Board of Retiree Club. Edna always had a smile whenever you saw her. She loveed spending time and traveling with her family and her church family.  She would always leave you with “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” Edna was united in wedlock to Carl B. Dickens who preceded her in death.
On Thursday, February 29, 2024 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital/NM in Oxford MS, she peacefully went home to be with the Lord.
Edna is survived by her son: Charles Wesley Pegues; five grandchildren: Shanterrica, Justin, LaQuitha, Wesley and Torrianna; five great grandchildren: Kielon, Major, Haizley, Austin and Izaiah; siblings: Murlean, Mae, Robert G. (Mary) and Willie G. Pegues;  bonus siblings: Phyllis (James), James and Peaches;  several nieces and nephews; two aunts: Bessie Bright, and Estelle Campbell; brother in laws: Lawrence Bell, Arthur Dickens, William Dickens, and John Dickens; sister in laws: Lurlean Dickens, Minnie Morton, Lillie Hayes and Shirley Pegues;   God daughters, Tammy, Gia, Kim and Tracy; special friends, Janice, Pam, Carrie and Minnie;  and the Class of ‘1972.
Edna is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her son: Carl Rico Dickens; her siblings: Corrine, James Murry, Charlie, Alice and a host of aunts and uncles.
