Rose Miller Murdock - December 12, 1916 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Logansport)
Obituary Preview: Rose Miller Murdock, age 105, Logansport, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, February 6th, 2022, at Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Rose was born December 12, 1916, in Cut Knife, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Roderick and Adelaide A. Stewart Palmer.
The scene of her birth was a cabin built of sod with a rope as a lifeline connecting the house to the barn on the frozen tundra of the plains of Canada. Prairie Indians were present at her birth as the temperature was below freezing and Rose’s mother’s hair froze to the pillow.
The family eventually moved back to Roderick’s family home in Cambridge, England. When Rose reached the age of five the matriarch of the Palmer family insisted Rose attend boarding school. As this would cause Rose to move from the family home, Adelaide, her mother, flatly rejected this situation and after a time, Roderick, Adelaide and Rose moved back to Canada. They eventually packed and moved again, this time to the south, taking the railroad to a warmer climate. Dressed in fur coats, boots and hats, they ended up in Logansport, where they settled and continued to raise their family. After the birth of Pauline and Virginia, their family was complete.
On June 8, 1942, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Logansport, she was married to Frederick T. Miller, who preceded her in death on December 8, 1956. She later married William Sewell Murdock on March 22, 1968. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1987.
In 1978, Rose retired as manager of the Eastgate Branch of the F & M State Bank, where she had the unfortunate experience of having been robbed at gunpoint twice.  She had also worked at Bailey’s clothing store in later years.
A life-long, devout member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Rose was a familiar and welcome sight at most church dinners and activities. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) and had served as president as well as serving several terms on the church’s Vestry and other committees.
Rose was also a familiar and welcome sight in the Logansport community wherever she happened to be. She was a member of the Logansport Art Association, the Alpha Mu Chapter, Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority and the Mary Dykeman Guild, working as a volunteer in the Memorial Hospital gift shop.
Among many of life’s activities Rose especially enjoyed playing golf. In her later years, she continued her enjoyment of golf with partner and social companion, Dick Cassidy, Sr., a fellow-classmate of the Logansport High School Class of 1934.
Rose was immediately likeable and endlessly kind to anyone and everyone who ever met her. Few people could forget her characteristic smile, distinctive voice, gentle manner and impeccably well-groomed style. These were her trademarks throughout one hundred and five years of a healthy and independent life.
Surviving are her children, Fritz and Linda Miller, Trish and Dan Williams and Fr. Clark and Deb Miller, all of Logansport; Harriet Murdock Rincon, Munster; grandchildren, Eric and Jessica Miller, Ashburn, Virginia, Katie and Jason Hopper, Westfield, Matt and Sarah Williams, Phoenix, Jason and Emily Miller, Logansport, Kyle and Shannon Miller, Westfield, Marie and Kyle Shaffer, Frankfort, Rebecca and Alex Lorencz, Holt, MI; sixteen great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Friday, February 25th, at Kroeger Funeral Home and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, also at the funeral home.
A Requiem Mass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26th at Trinity Episcopal Church, with officiating, Bishop Douglas Sparks, Rev. Ted Neidlinger, and Rev. Clark Miller.
She will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery with a private ceremony.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 319 Seventh Street, Logansport, 46947.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral program to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can also serve as a historical record, allowing future generations to learn about their ancestors.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their pricing.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help capture the person's personality and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform, but many online obituaries remain available indefinitely. Some sites may offer options for archiving or preserving the obituary for future generations.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it's common to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the newspaper or platform immediately to request a correction. They may be able to make changes before publication or issue a correction notice.

Can I reuse an obituary from one publication in another?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private listing on some online platforms or choose not to publish it at all. However, keep in mind that this may limit its reach and impact.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or interests.

How do I decide what information to include in an obituary?

Think about what made the person unique and special. Consider their accomplishments, hobbies, relationships, and personality traits when deciding what information to include.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family, so it's perfectly fine to mention them in an obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider asking a friend or family member for help. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I update an existing obituary?

This depends on the platform or publication. Some may allow updates or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to check their policies before attempting to make changes.

How do I preserve an original copy of the obituary?
