Obituary Preview: Sylvia Bort
With sadness, we announce the passing of Sylvia A. Bort, 86, of Prairietown, on Sunday, April 28, 2024.  Born February 7, 1938 at Litchfield Hospital, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Cordelia Heine Bunte.  Sylvia was baptized on March 6, 1938 and was confirmed on March 18, 1951 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.  She grew up in Prairietown on a farm with her three sisters, Janice (Bunte) Hill, Connie (Bunte) Schaefer and Linda (Bunte) Hartley.  She attended St. Peter's Lutheran School and church in Prairietown, Illinois.  She graduated from Edwardsville High School in June 1956.
Sylvia met the love of her life, Fred. G Bort, and they married on June 13, 1959 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.  They had four children, Mary, Melinda, Marina and Fred.  Sylvia initially worked as a secretary and then became a stay at home mother soon after having her children.  She loved raising her family and always placed God and Church first.  She loved to cook, sew, and embroidery many gifts and quilts.  Sylvia watched over great nieces and neighbor's children before and after school.  She was the secretary of St. Peter's Lutheran Sunday School for 25 years, a member of Ladies Aid, Choir, and held many other positions in Sunday School, Church and Community.
As a servant leader, she was always there to help when needed with family, friends and church.  She loved having her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren near.  She and Fred were together with great friends often dancing, playing cards or just being together.  Sylvia and Fred often traveled to every family celebration especially for baptisms, confirmations, graduations, weddings, vacations and sporting events.
Fred and Sylvia were blessed to be together over 64 plus years.  Dad often referred to mom as "His Angel."  We know now that mom is in Heaven with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.   She will be truly missed by her family and friends.  We love you mom.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Fred G. Bort of Prairietown, IL, sister, Connie (Gerald) Schaefer of Prairietown, IL, children, Mary (Steve) Hobus of Meriden, KS, Melinda (Sam) McIntyre of Conroe, TX, Marina Bettorf of Bunker Hill, IL, Fred (Mary) Bort of New Ross, IN, grandchildren, Amanda (Rev. Dr. Brian) Gautheir, Andrew (Nicole) Hobus, Isaiah (Erica) Hobus, Seth (Ashley) McIntyre, Joel (Abbey) McIntyre, Amy Cotton, Amber Gieseking, Brittany (Kyle) Lucas, Fred Nicholas Bort, Kole (Ally) Bort, Kamron Bort, Kala (Morgan) Pepper, Karley Hovermale (Jim Marsh), Ben Hovermale, great grandchildren, Ezra, Aviva, and Alice Gautheir, Brooklynn, Andrew, Matthew Hobus, Auden and Arlo McIntyre, Joel McIntyre, Olivia Bacca, Nolan and Sylvia Cotton, Kennedy, Kobi, Kami and Krosby Gieseking, Olivia Pepper, Calvin Marsh, Nastassia and Nick Brown, Felecia and Ryan Herman and Aaron and Saleen Lucas, great great grandchildren, Liana Herman, Lucas Herman, Shiloh Lucas, cousins, great nieces, nephews and many friends.  Sylvia was preceded in death by her son in law, Zeke (Oscar) Bettorf, parents, Theodore and Cordelia Bunte, mother and father in law, Fred and Edith Bort, sisters and brothers in law, Janice (Robert) Hill and Linda (Dennis) Hartley, brothers and sisters in law, Bruce and Irene Bort, Jerald and Joyce Bort, sister in law and brother in law, Helena & Rev. Dr. Walter DeMoss.
Mrs. Sylvia Bort has been a blessing to all of us and we will dearly miss her but rejoice in the day when we will meet her again in Heaven.
Visitation is Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Friday, May 3, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.  Funeral services are Friday, May 3, 2024 at 10:00 am at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.  Burial will follow at Prairietown Cemetery. He was born December 20, 1935 in Macoupin County, IL to Andrew James Duty and Lillie Mae (Angelo) Duty. He married Elsie Cathorall on June 8, 1956 at Fosterburg Baptist Church. Elsie passed away on February 19, 2014.
Lloyd retired from Shell Oil and then worked full time on his farm. Jeff Shupenus was his good friend and partner in the cattle business for many years.
Lloyd is survived by his three children Don (Connie) Duty of Steilacoom, WA, Sandra (Tim) Carman of Wyaconda, MO, and David (Sarah) Duty of Bunker Hill.
His grandchildren are Jim (Rebecca) Duty of Oakdale, CA, Abigail (Duty) and Tsuma Ngala of Chaska MN, Megan (Carman) and Mike Burns of Ames, IA, Brett Carman of Marion, IA, Beth (Duty) and Dylan Trimm of Bunker Hill, and Amy (Duty) and Caleb Brace of Ankeny, IA.
He is survived by his sisters Nancy Williams of Brighton, Lilly (Ray) James of Brandon, FL, Nettie Marie Bilbruck, of Cambridge, IL, and brother John (Kathy) Duty of Louisville, KY, 10 great-grandchildren, sister in law’s Helen Manns of Godfrey, Carolyn Golden of Cocoa, FL, brother in laws Dan and Kay Cathorall of Pitsfield, IL and Mike and Jodi Cathorall of Alton, numerous nieces and nephews.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Francis Duty.

Gary Dean “Harvey” Morrison, 77 of Bunker Hill passed away January 13, 2024. He was born April 27, 1946 in Alton, IL to Harry and Vera Friedline Morrison. He attended Bunker Hill High School graduating in 1964. He worked and retired from Olin Brass after 41 years. Following his retirement, he enjoyed working seasonally as a tender truck driver for CHS. He enjoyed watching sports, auto racing, and meeting for coffee with his friends everyday. He loved spending time with his family, and especially loved spending time with his grandson, Otto.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Vera Morrison, and his mother/father in law Roy and Becky Wieseman.
He is survived by his wife, Monica (Wieseman) Morrison, son Max (Hannah) Morrison, daughter Caleigh (Nathaniel) Stolte, and grandson Otto Stolte. Also a sister Linda Burch, sister in law Nancy Purdun, a great niece and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Gary Gene Rull, 83, of Bunker Hill, IL, passed away on Thursday, September 07, 2023, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.  He was born December 18, 1939, in Carlinville, IL, to Warner John Rull and Lucille (Tiek) Rull Acuncius.  He married Judy (Hammond) Rull on June 20, 1964, at First Congregational Church in Bunker Hill, IL.   He graduated from SIU at Edwardsville in 1963.  He worked as a math and biology teacher first in Roxana, IL, and later in Jerseyville, IL.  In 1978, Judy and he purchased South Lawn Sheltered Care Home in Bunker Hill, where both remained as owners and administrators at the time of his death.  He also was a real estate salesperson for 30 years, income tax preparer/advisor for 10 years, and auctioneer for 5 years.
Gary was devoted to his hometown and his church.   He served on the Bunker Hill Community Unit #8 Board of Education for 18 years and was a volunteer fireman for the BHFPD for 13 years.  He was a volunteer Hunter Safety Master Instructor for the Illinois Department of Natural resources for 45 years.  He was also elected to the Macoupin Country Board.  He served on the Board of Directors for the First Congregational Church (FCC) where he was also chairman for some of that time.  He was chairman of the church building committee responsible for the FCC church addition.  He served as a deacon for the church for many years, too, and was recognized for his dedication and contributions to FCC by being named a deacon emeritus in June 2023.
Gary loved all of his family but particularly enjoyed doting on his grandchildren and supporting them in their scholastic and sports activities.  He also enjoyed staying active.  He played in a softball league up until the age of 80.  He was a lifetime bowler and participated in leagues at the SuperBowl in Gillespie, IL, and Airport Plaza Bowl in Bethalto, IL.  He was also a diehard hunter and enjoyed teaching young and old about hunter safety.
Gary is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy of Bunker Hill; his children Kimberly (Efrem) Tate of Edwardsville, IL, Shelle (Paul) Markel of Collinsville, IL, Dr. Gary M. Rull of Springfield, IL, and Brandon Rull of Bunker Hill; his grandchildren Dr. Jordan (Olivia) Markel of Gadsden, AL, Dr. Shelby Markel of Bethalto, IL, Sophie and Nick Rull of Bunker Hill, and William Tate of Edwardsville; siblings Dean (Arlena) Rull of Bunker Hill, Joan Catalpa of Collinsville, IL, Cheryl (David) Wilson of Fosterburg, IL, and Bonnie (Tom) Goestenkors of Pocahontas, IL.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Mason Acuncius, half-brother Michael Acuncius, daughter-in-law Beth Rull, and brother-in-law Gene Catalpa.

Dad was born October 10, 1937 at home in Dorsey, IL to William D and Minnie P (Johnson) Bertels. He was the youngest of four. The true baby with eleven years between dad and his youngest brother Bob. Dad chose a different route than the family farm. He graduated from Bunker Hill High School at the age of 16 and later served in the Army Reserves at Ft Leonard Wood, MO until May 3,1958 when he and our mom, Norma (Miller) eloped to Hernando, MS. This year they celebrated 65 years of marriage. Together they had the four of us, Dale (Lynette) Bertels, Dana (Lisa) Bertels, Darryl Bertels and Angela Wright (Ray). They were blessed with grandchildren Melinda (Ricky) Ludwig, Drs Kyle (Bo) Wright, Nicholas (Becca) Bertels, Ethan (Tiffany) Wright, Megan Wright (Hadley) and Lena, two great granddaughters Madelyn Quinn Bertels and Josephine Wyoming Ludwig.  Dad is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Bertels and Linda Miller, step-grandson, Billy DeConcini, step-great grandsons, Will and Dylan DeConcini. In his earlier years, dad worked for Alton Brick Co and later Omark Industries before finding his niche in real estate. He was a licensed agent, broker and an appraiser, working for many agencies over a vast 50-year career. Wooff Realty, Don Bryant Gallery of Homes, Ira E Berry, Coldwell Banker Paslay Realtors  and most recently Landmark Realty. Dad still had an active brokers license and contemplated retiring next April. In 1980, Dad even delved into his own real estate company, Future World Realty. He also served as a past President of the Alton-Wood River Board of Realtors. Dad taught Sunday School, umpired Khoury League and served many years as a Madison County Election Judge.  He selflessly donated many liters of blood until he was no longer able to Mom was the cook, but Dad did the grilling. He cranked a lot of homemade ice cream for us as kids and never missed a Cardinals game. You always knew when dad was around, either honking at you driving by in his little red truck or whistling when he walked through the door. He will be missed immensely, by us and by many.Dad was predeceased by our mom, his wife, Norma, parents; William D and Minnie P Bertels,  father and mother-in-law; Aden and Virginia (Grizzle) Miller, brother-in-law; Aden Wm (Bill) Miller, siblings; Leonard (Edna May) Bertels, Lena (Ed) Rust, Robert Bertels and daughter-in-law Cathy Bertels. Can you imagine their reunion in heaven! Visitation will be on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church, Bethalto from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.  Funeral services are Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 12:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, Bethalto.  Burial will be at Emmaus Lutheran Cemetery, Dorsey, IL.  Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church and School, 625 Church Drive, Bethalto, IL 62010.  Anyone wishing to send an online condolence may do so at www.kravanyafuneral.com.  Kravanya Funeral Home, Bunker Hill, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
