JACK HUGH BLEVINS - August 26, 1934 - April 14, 2022

Departed: 04/14/2022 (Palouse)
Obituary Preview: Our father, Jack H. Blevins of Genesee and formerly of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away at the age of 87, on April 14, 2022 at Aspen Park Care Facility in Moscow. He had resided and received care there for the last two years of his life.
Jack was born on August 26, 1934 to Joe and Ethel Blevins at the family ranch in Opportunity MT, southwest of Anaconda Montana. Dad talked a lot about growing up at the family ranch, a place that he loved.  He talked of spending his days helping to bring in the cattle on horseback, and of cutting and raking hay using only horses; He also spoke fondly of riding and exploring the vast areas around Anaconda. As a young man, Jack went to work at the smelter in Anaconda. It was there that he first became interested in masonry, and later became a bricklayer by trade. His trade kept the family on the move from town to town following jobs throughout Montana. The Blevins family eventually settled in Moscow in 1969.
Dad loved local motocross race tracks, he enjoyed getting to know the racers and their families; So much so that he was instrumental in creating and helping run the first motocross racetrack at the Fossil Bowl in Clarkia, Idaho in 1976.
Jack's hobbies were fly fishing, music, photography and writing. But most of all he loved working and operating his masonry business.
Jack is survived by his children, all of Moscow. Gayle Anderson (Rod), Doug Blevins (Edie), and Barry Blevins (Denise) who we lost in 2020. In addition, Jack is survived by his younger brother Bill (Stephanie) of Tucson, AZ.

Departed: 02/12/2022 (Palouse)
Obituary Preview: Gary James Qualmann
Gary Qualmann, 67, of Viola, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1954, to Margaret and Carl Qualmann in Troy, Mich. As a child he was an altar boy at the St. Thomas More Church, in Troy, Mich. Gary grew up near Detroit, and loved spending his summers at Grand Haven Michigan with his extended family on Lake Michigan. He went to Northern Michigan University and got a degree in conservation in the 1970s.
He came out west in 1979 and settled in St. Maries. He worked for the State of Idaho and the U.S. Forest Service on the St. Joe, at Red Ives and Clarkia, at first surveying. Gary found his passion in forest fire fighting, wildland fire. He was a ground pounder because he chose to be, not for lack of offers of promotion, staying on the fire line for most of his 25 year career. He was a crew boss, and later became a squad boss on the St. Joe Hot Shot fire crew. He fought fire doing many jobs, from Northern Canada to the Mexican Border. Washington to Tennessee. He also worked in fisheries, timber management, and other outdoor work during those 25 years. He was a delight to work with, so much that he had job offers pretty much wherever he went.
Gary loved being a fire spotter from airplanes doing air patrol after he could no longer do hot shot work. He was the consummate fireman. Strong, but always calm. Compassionate, but very hard working. A wry sense of humor we all loved. Around 1999 he started work at his other lifelong passion, hockey. He helped build the Palouse Ice Rink, bending rebar, starting from the ground up. To the customers, he was the face of the ice rink for years.
Although he had no children of his own, he had stepchildren from his first marriage to Marie Duke in 1990, and helped raise and love them like they were his own. They divorced in 1993. He loved kids and wherever he went he’d always gravitate towards the children. He loved his time volunteering at the Potlatch Elementary School. He met his second wife Suzanne Lay, working at the Palouse Ranger District doing stream improvement work. He was the love of her life. They married in 2000. Their first date was kayaking the St. Joe River, a pastime they shared for life. He loved music, hockey, skiing, volleyball, softball, bird watching and everything outdoors. He devoured books.
He is survived by his mother Marge Qualmann; wife, Suzanne Qualmann; his ex-wife Marie (Duke) Dymkoski; his stepdaughters Jennifer Erickson (Jesse) and Kristin Compton (Chuck); his stepgrandchildren, Savannah and Sabrina Erickson, Grant Compton; and his sisters Lori (Phil) Brown, Jill (Gary) Peck and their children Alex and Ryan Brown and Emma and Cameron Peck and his beloved brother Jeff Qualmann, and numerous favorite cousins. Gary was an amazing man. He gave of his time, and would have given you the shirt off his back. He made people smile wherever he went, especially children. He was the most patient gentle man you would ever meet. We’ll miss you Mr. Q!

DALE SLAGLE - August 27, 1925 - January 30, 2022

Departed: 01/30/2022 (Palouse)
Obituary Preview: Dale L Slagle was born on August 29, 1925, and passed away on January 30, 2022.  He was born in the home on the farm of his parents, Claude and Lietha Myrtle, on Deep Creek Road near Potlatch, Idaho.  He grew up on that farm.   He attended schools in Potlatch and graduated in June of 1944.
Dale joined the Army in July of 1944.  After boot camp he was sent to Saipan in the Pacific Front of WWII.  It was the end of the war so Dale said he was “kicked around to different duties.”   He was a cook’s helper for a while but eventually ended up in Personnel. That was a good place for him as he loved people and had a gift of gab.    When you were with Dale, you didn’t have to worry about how to keep a conversation going!   And when it comes to history, he was a walking, talking history book of the people he knew in the Potlatch area.   He was honorably discharged from the Army in July of 1946. From then until he returned to full time farming in 1981, his jobs ranged from working for the Potlatch Highway Department, pumping gas at a gas station in Las Vegas, being a truck driver out of Fairchild Air Force base to working at the PFI mill in Potlatch and Bennet Mill in Princeton, Idaho
Dale married Alice Johnson in June of 1952.  They had two daughters, Elaine and Linda.  They later divorced.  He married Bernice Solberg in April 1979.  They divorced in1991. From 1981 Dale stayed on the farm and was actively putting up hay until 2018.  Dale didn’t smoke but while swathing and bailing, he would light up a cigar “to keep the bugs away.”
Dale also loved sweets.  He willingly shared his mother’s Cry Babies cookie recipe and loved the baked and shared results of the recipe.
Dale is survived by his two daughters, Elaine Jackson and Linda Slagle, seven grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.  He will be missed by his many friends and neighbors.
Dale will be interred at the Slagle family plot in the Freeze Cemetery.  At Dale’s request, there will be no funeral service.
