Ann Marie Seifert - June 19, 1945 - November 04, 2023

Departed: 11/04/2023 (Sherburn)
Obituary Preview: Ann Seifert of St. Paul, Minnesota died on November 4, 2023, after fighting metastatic breast cancer.
Ann Marie Seifert was born on June 19, 1945 in Sherburn, Minnesota, the daughter of Ben and Ann Seifert (Yurcek). She grew up in Sherburn and graduated from Sherburn High School in 1963. Ann graduated from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a degree in Psychology in 1967.
Ann worked for the State of Minnesota for 34 years. There she worked for the Minnesota Department of Economic Security (MDES) and the Minnesota Department of Energy (MDE). Her position with MDE involved a great deal of travel and calling on agencies around the state. Ann enjoyed visiting many of Minnesota’s counties and meeting the staffs at the agencies she served. After her retirement from the State, Ann was employed at the Lake Wobegon USA Store at the Mall of America until it closed.
As a Girl Stater in high school, Ann returned home from St. Paul with enthusiasm and respect for community and civic service. So much so that she volunteered and served on countless committees and boards in the Twin Cities, including the Urban League, MAPE and the Landmark Center.
Ann enjoyed reading, singing, entertaining, cooking, theatre, music and traveling. She dedicated much of her life to volunteer service, and many of her volunteer activities included her diverse interests. She was one of those volunteers answering phones for TPT telethons, calling donors for MPR, shopping for Store to Door, talking to you from a booth at the State Fair, aiding travelers at the MSP airport, serving as an election judge, leading tours of the Japanese Garden at Como Park and working wherever needed at the Landmark Center. Ann also tutored elementary students in the St. Paul School District and brought them up to their reading grade levels. After Hurricane Katrina, she bought a bus ticket and rode to New Orleans and volunteered where needed for 10 days. Ann also gave car tours of Minneapolis and St. Paul for community and civic events.
Ann called the Twin Cities her home for 60 years. She lived in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Roseville and Inver Grove Heights, yet called “downtown St. Paul” her favorite home. Ann joined the Catholic churches where she lived and got involved in each of them from singing in the choir to serving as a reader or Eucharistic minister. Rick was called to his eternal rest on Thursday, August 17, 2023 in Minneapolis , Minnesota. Messages of Sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome.com
Richard William Brolsma, age 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 17, 2023 with his girls by his side. After he was given two weeks to live, Rick fought hard, showed his strength, and defied the odds for the next 13.5 months, ultimately losing his battle to cancer. Rick was born on July 17, 1960 to Richard and Shirley (Schnittger) Brolsma in Estherville, Iowa. He received his formal education in the Sherburn school district, later graduating with his favorite class of 1979. There he was the captain of the football and wrestling teams. He not only excelled at sports but was Miss Murphy’s favorite choir student (so we’re told) and had the band skills of a professional drummer.
After high school he went on numerous adventures with many friends in several different states. Those adventures/stories shall remain to be left with just Rick and his friends. After Rick decided to settle down, he met his former wife Tracy Culver in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To continue his adventures, he moved to northern Minnesota where he became the world’s best dad to his three daughters. Rick learned from all his different careers that he no longer wanted to be told what to do and wanted to be his own boss, finally making his hobby his way of life. His final adventure brought him to Sitka, Alaska where he bought a fishing boat and named it after his three daughters, the TarKaSar, and became a commercial fisherman. Rick made Sitka his home for 21 years with his dog Maggie Mae by his side, sharing his stories with all who listened, earning the title “King Slayer” and meeting lifelong friends. It was in his heart to share his Sitka home with family and friends, many of whom joined him on the TarKaSar receiving the “Rick tour guide experience”. His fishing legacy in Sitka Alaska will continue onto his three Grandsons at his favorite fishing hole Medvejie. One of his many accomplishments in Alaska was being named the #1 hand troller in a single season in Southeast Alaska, meaning he caught the most fish out of any hand troll permit holder.
After receiving the devastating cancer diagnosis, Rick moved back to Minnesota to be with his three daughters and family. The year was filled with unforgettable memories, ice fishing trips, camping trips, eating everything at the state fair, and welcoming his newest grandson Evan into the world. Another joy was having his three daughters, oldest grandchildren Easton and Leo, all together in his special place…. His home Sitka, Alaska.
He is survived by his mother Shirley Brolsma of Fairmont, his three daughters, Tara (Philip) of Minneapolis, Kayla (Randy) of Eagan, Sara (Joey) Osborn of Monticello. New, proud, loving, and the best grandfather to Easton Osborn, Leopold Osborn, and Evan Stevenson. Sisters Jodi (Mark) Hawkins of Fairmont, Lisa (Jay) Hanson of Detroit Lakes, Brother Heath, (Danielle) Brolsma of Plymouth. Many nieces, nephews and friends and family.
Rick was preceded in death by his father Dick Brolsma, infant sister Susan Brolsma, grandparents William and Doria Schnittger and Jacob and Hattie Brolsma, along with other relatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing and provide information about funeral or memorial services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and within 200-500 words. This allows for a brief summary of the person's life without overwhelming readers with too much information.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments, and can also spare loved ones from having to write it during a difficult time.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many libraries also maintain microfilm records of past newspapers that can be searched manually.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, printed obituaries in newspapers are typically final and cannot be altered once they've been published.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks to review and post the obituary.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add a personal touch to the obituary and help celebrate the person's life.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

This is optional and ultimately up to the family's discretion. Some people prefer to include this information as a way of raising awareness about a particular disease or condition, while others may choose not to disclose this detail.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an online obituary, contact the website or funeral home directly to request corrections. For printed obituaries, it may be more challenging to make changes, but you can try contacting the newspaper's corrections department.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

How do I write an obituary for someone who was private or had a complicated life?

This can be a sensitive topic. It's essential to approach the task with empathy and respect for the person's privacy. Focus on celebrating their positive qualities and accomplishments while being mindful of any sensitive information that may be best left unshared.

Can I create a video obituary?
