Ginko Nagaoka Lundin - December 13, 1932 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Maple Grove)
Obituary Preview: Ginko Lundin passed away from pneumonia on February 20th, 2024 at the age of 91.
Born in Kyoto, Japan in 1932, Ginko met her husband of 51 years, Morris, while working in the kitchen at the Army base where Morris was stationed as an officer after the Korean War. An interracial marriage in the 1950's was not an easy path and the Army discouraged soldiers from having any type of relationship with Japanese women – and the families of Japanese women weren't keen on the idea either.
The Army manufactured a story that Ginko had active tuberculosis and that she would be placed in a sanitorium for many months when they reached the States. Thankfully, doctors in the U.S. discovered it was not true and Ginko was not quarantined. Morris left the Army and won over Ginko's family as an artist and as an incredibly nice man. So, despite the odds, they fell in love, married and raised their son in Kyoto for the first two years of his life.
When it was time to make a home in the States in 1958, they traveled by freighter to California, where Morris' brother and his wife picked them up in a new car and trailer loaned from an aunt. They road tripped together to the Lundin homestead in northern Minnesota. Having been raised in a large city, Ginko remembers being homesick after seeing nothing but "earth and sky, earth and sky" as she looked across the prairie.
Morris landed a job in Minneapolis in book publishing, so Ginko was able to get back to city living. Eventually, they settled in Bloomington, MN, where all three of their kids grew up. Ginko quickly learned English and became a naturalized American citizen. Along the way, she was fortunate to have been taken under the wings of several wonderful American women, who helped her assimilate into her new life, including teaching her how to quilt. Over her lifetime, Ginko donated hundreds of gorgeous quilts to a variety of charities in addition to outfitting friends and family with her creations.
Ginko was a fabulous cook and private dinner parties soon turned into a catering business with her famous sukiyaki dinners. No one ever went hungry in the Lundin house! Ginko's generosity and open door was well known, both here and in Japan.
Morris and Ginko hosted many Japanese youngsters over the years—as exchange students or visitors to the U.S. trying to get their footing—and those kids became extended family. People knew of Ginko’s place as a safe place to land.
Ginko was the living example of the phrase “small but mighty” before that was even a thing—family friends called her a “dynamo.” She was always on the go, had somewhere to be, something to do, and never liked to sit still for too long (even at the dinner table).
Ginko loved to meet new people and made friends easily; she never met a stranger. She herself attributed her likability to her unique take on English—one-of-a-kind word mangling delivered in a Japanese accent—which she deliberately never tried to change despite decades of life in America. Many of those Ginko-isms continue to live on through her children and grandchildren.
Ginko's volunteerism extended to many Japanese American groups, and among them was The Nikkei Project, an organization for Japanese American senior citizens. In her later years, she transitioned from a volunteer to one of the seniors being served.
In 2012, Ginko was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. It was a long and interesting journey, and a little bit of the original Ginko was lost as each year passed. What remained was her love for hugs and holding hands. She became a favorite resident of her memory care unit for telling the staff how beautiful they were and for thanking them for everything they did.
Thank you, Ginko, for all of the memories that you've left us.
Ginko was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Morris Lundin, and survived by children Tom (Veirette) Lundin, Kat (Mark) Dalager, Randa Morioka [née Rhonda Lundin] (Kazuhiro Kiyosawa), six grandchildren and their partners (Elizabeth (Matt), Mitchell (Liz), Cacie (Lindsey), Dan (Jessie), Neva (Kevin), Augie (Setareh)), many bonus children (including Masami Suga) and bonus grandson (Koji).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, 12:30-4:00, at Yumi Restaurant in Edina. Memorials preferred to The Nikkei Project, 4533 Chowen Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55410.

Gerald Florian Baumgartner - September 01, 1938 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Maple Grove)
Obituary Preview: Gerald F. Baumgartner September 1, 1938 – February 18, 2024
Gerald Florian Baumgartner (Jerry) DDS, 85, passed away of natural causes on Sunday February 18th, 2024, at the Johanna Shores Retirement Community in Arden Hills, Minnesota (MN).
A celebration of life will be held at Kozlak Radulovich Funeral Chapel, 13745 Reimer Drive, Maple Grove, MN on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., followed by a memorial service and reception. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Seven Dolors Cemetery in Albany, MN.
Jerry was born on September 1, 1938, in St. Cloud, MN and grew up in Albany, MN. After graduating from Albany High School in 1956, he went on to complete his undergraduate degree at the University of St. Thomas in 1960, following in his father’s footsteps. Jerry then enrolled in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1965.
Soon after graduating dental school, Jerry started his own dental practice in Sauk Rapids, MN before moving his practice to downtown St. Cloud. Jerry practiced dentistry for 35 years.
Jerry was the oldest boy in a family of ten children – five boys and five girls. Being the oldest boy meant he had to accompany his father, the town doctor, on numerous house calls, including local horse farms to help bring new colts and fillies into the world.
Education was very important to Jerry, which he instilled in his two sons. He was proud of their accomplishments in life and wanted them to be well-rounded people. Jerry provided many memorable experiences for his sons, often through his love of travel to far away destinations and road trips to the national parks. Eventually his pride grew to include his two grandchildren, whom he heartily supported athletically and academically.
He was a fan of all sports and enjoyed playing golf with his family and friends well into his retirement. He loved going to various sporting events and regularly made the trip to the Twin Cities to attend Minnesota Twins games or St. Thomas football and basketball games.
Jerry’s trademark was being a sharp dresser. It did not matter if he was going to work, a doctor appointment, or even the grocery store – his philosophy was if you’re going out, you might as well go out with class … and that’s exactly what he did.
Surviving to honor his memory are his sons, Mark (Marsha Montague) and Brent (Angela); grandchildren Lauren and Luke; siblings Kathleen (Gardner) Hurlburt, Eileen, Maureen Curran, Tim (Linda), Tom (Janet Salk), Pat, Debbie Rush, Kevin (Jackie), Mary (Sarah Shriver) and nieces and nephews.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Florian and Kathleen (Keefe) Baumgartner, brothers in law Vince Rush and Ken Curran, and former wife and mother of his two sons, Mary Greuel.
The family would like to thank Johanna Shores Retirement Community for his robust care the last 18 months of his life, as well as the Optage Hospice team who comforted him with their devotion and nurturing these last few months.

Rebecca Sue Wagenbach - June 10, 1975 - January 20, 2024

Departed: 01/20/2024 (Maple Grove)
Obituary Preview: Rebecca Sue Wagenbach was born on June 10, 1975, in Waconia, Minnesota, the third child of Chuck and Suzzanne Hoese. With her two big brothers, Ben and Tim, Becky was the daughter they were hoping for and she was always known as Suzzanne’s ‘favorite daughter.’
Funeral services for Becky will be held at Kozlak Radulovich Funeral Chapel in Maple Grove, Minnesota, on Sunday, January 28, at 2 pm with Troy Matheson officiating. Visitation will start at 1 pm.
Growing up, Becky was loved by family and friends who enjoyed her quick smile, great sense of humor, along with her adventurous, can-do attitude. Becky grew up in Glencoe, Minnesota, where she discovered her skills in planning, organizing, and analytic thinking.
She seemed to be especially well suited to her high school job at Food and Fuel, a convenience store in hometown Glencoe, MN and then Tom Thumb in St Cloud, MN, where she attended St Cloud State University. She graduated in accounting, passed the exam to be a CPA, and went on to a successful career in accounting in the Twin Cities area. Becky thrived in this world of skyscrapers and airplanes, where she was recruited to positions of greater responsibility until she chose her own path of better work/life balance. She was so brave, moving to St. Cloud on her own, putting herself through college, taking a trip to Italy, skydiving in Las Vegas, and traveling for her job.
Becky and Rob Wagenbach were married from June 24, 2006 until 2022. They lived in New Hope and then Hanover. She and Rob enjoyed many camping trips with their children, Corey and Elsie. When she met Rob, Becky recognized immediately his strong family values and that he would be a good father. Becky enjoyed cooking, especially steaks on her Weber kettle, a good pot roast, and frosting cookies with her kids. She was a lover of dogs including Cymba, Wrigley, and her recent companion Sunny. She was a big fan of Willie Nelson and called a Sunday morning listening to classic country music her ‘church.’
She especially loved her two children, Corey and Elsie, spending as much time as she could outside with them biking, playing with their dog, and attending Corey’s and Elsie’s many activities.
Mental and physical health issues were a problem for Becky in recent years. The daily management of her diabetes became an unwelcome part-time job. The stresses of the pandemic, anxiety, and chronic pain were overwhelming. We watched Becky slowly withdraw into herself and we lost the happy, outgoing person we loved. We know she never quit trying, but her planning and organizational skills no longer worked for her. She died on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at her home in Hanover, Minnesota.
She will be greatly missed by her survivors Corey Wagenbach and Elsie Wagenbach of St. Michael; her mother Suzzanne Rye and step-dad Clayton Rye of Hanlontown, IA; her father Chuck Hoese of Sartell; her brothers Ben (Sarah) Hoese of St. Paul and Tim (Lynn) Hoese of St. Cloud; her niece Emma (Tristian) Kiffmeyer and nephews Theo Gilbertson, Andrew (Megan) Hoese and Graham (Casandra) Hoese; her step-siblings Sarah Rye, Amy Rye and Richard (Shelly) Rye; and her many, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Paul and Anita Hoese of Watertown, and Gerald and Donna Dee Rambow of Willmar.
Memorials may be designated to a trust fund for Corey and Elsie or to 2B Continued 2B Continued - https://www.2bcontinued.org/.

Gerald Wendell Parks - March 01, 1950 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Maple Grove)
Obituary Preview: Gerald (Jerry) Wendell Parks
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Jerry Parks on Jan. 19, 2024, in Plymouth, MN. Jerry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen (Flakne), children Kelly (Josh) Max, Kristi (Matt) Klee, Katie (Erik) Cochran, and Rob (Jenna) Parks, 11 grandchildren, sisters Lyn (Bruce) Jutila and Audrey Smith, and service dog Lucy. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Wendell and Evangeline Parks, and sister Nancy Swanson.
Born on March 1, 1950, in Cloquet, MN, Jerry’s life was one of resilience and compassion. Jerry, the third of four children and the only son, brought vibrancy to his childhood, always keeping his parents on their toes. Jerry graduated from Cloquet High School in 1968 and later from UW-Stout in 1973 with a B.S. in Construction Management. He cherished lifelong connections with his Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers, frequently retelling tales of his formative years.
Jerry met his future wife, Karen, on a blind date and just 3 months later they were engaged. Their marriage on April 12, 1975, marked the beginning of a family that included four children. He was a fiercely devoted husband, caring father, and doting grandfather.
Jerry’s career focused on overseeing large commercial and industrial projects. As Vice President for MA Mortenson’s Industrial Division, Jerry showcased his strong ability to assemble talent, mentor others, and execute new business ventures. However, his professional journey was cut short when diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) at age 56.
From onset, Jerry dedicated his life to changing the face of AD, by participation in research, clinical trials, and advocating for a national plan and funding. Jerry found great joy and lasting friends through his involvement with “The Gathering” and “Giving Voice Chorus”. Jerry’s vision led to the development of Parks’ Place, a community redefining memory care, which opened in 2019 and is home to 30 residents.
Jerry spent his final two years at Parks’ Place, surrounded by love, caring staff, and the loyal companionship of his wife and service dog, Lucy. Throughout life, Jerry remained upbeat and positive. Jerry’s laughter and mischievous chuckle were infectious. His legacy changed the face of AD, leaving a lasting mark on those he touched.
Visitation will be held from 4-7pm on February 1, 2024 at Kozlak-Radulovich Chapel (13745 Reimer Dr. Maple Grove, MN).
Funeral service will be held at 11am on February 2, 2024 with visitation one hour prior at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (7401 Cty. Rd. 101, Maple Grove, MN). Luncheon and burial to follow.

His love for playing football continued through college at St. Cloud State University and professional football in the CFL (Canadian Football League) for the Las Vegas Posse as a linebacker and in the Arena Football League, playing four seasons with the Milwaukee Mustangs.
