Jillian F. Betters - May 13, 1978 - March 16, 2022

Departed: 03/16/2022 (Montague)
Obituary Preview: Jillian Flynn (Mackin) Betters is at peace, March 16, 2022.  Born in Greenfield, MA on May 13, 1978, to Michael P. Mackin and Marcia J. Rodovich, she grew up in Turners Falls, MA. A 1996 graduate with honors, of Turners Falls High School, she was an outspoken leader of her peers as she served as class president and student body president during her four years there. Her competitive spirit was evident, not only in the classroom, but also on the playing field as a 3-sport athlete. Jillian immersed herself into, and excelled, at all her endeavors, softball, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, band, school clubs, class offices but especially at building lifelong bonds. Jillian moved on to the University of Rhode Island. There, she built many more friendships, was a Resident Assistant and graduated cum laude after six years, in 2002, as a Doctor of Pharmacy, financing her way with scholarships, loans, and hard work, always with the moral support of her family.  Taking her last final, Jill rushed home in time to meet her first love and nephew, Jakob, on the day he was born!
Jillian became a Pharmacist and joined Walmart where she served her clients for nearly twenty years, first in Gardner MA, then moving to the pharmacy in Orange, MA where she eventually became the Pharmacy Manager. Jillian loved her job and the people she served. She talked often about how happy her job made her and the relationships she made, not only with her team (Jillian, Sarah Carol, Emily, Annemarie, Tiffany, Lori, Stephanie, and Marybeth) but also with her many patients, that she loved, comforted, aided, educated, and teased, always with a smile and honest, heartfelt consideration. After the birth of her first son, Brayden, in December of 2004, her pride and joy, she finally settled in Erving, MA. She was a true believer that everything in life happens for a reason, and upon her move to Erving, she met the love of her life, Ryan Betters, and on September 2, 2007, they were married. Ryan was the man she had always hoped for in life, and he complimented her personality. She would always tease that she dragged him out of his shell, and he would keep her grounded, but together, life showed them what true love was all about. The birth of her soulmate, Jameson, followed in 2010 and finally the frosting on her cake, Gavin, in 2014. Her boys were Jillian's true love in life. She was a “Boy Mom” and loved them dearly. Her boys, along with her nieces and nephews, Jakob, Dylan, Cameron, Izabella and Rhea, were the joys of her life, her reason for being.  She was coici “the chuch” a most important title for this Irish girl! Jillian was all about making memories, and through the years she made many of them with her Bunky, Willy, B-B, Cambo, Jamo, Izzle, Gavey and sweet baby Rhey. Cheering at all their sporting events, birthday parties, school achievements and life experiences while being a moral leader, confidence builder and sympathetic ear. Coici was a role, no, a calling, in which she reveled!
Tradition became a big thing in the Betters home at the holidays as well, making sure her children knew how to make pierogis on Christmas Eve, was an important tradition in her husband's family, and she was proud to continue it.
She loved to travel with her boys making memories, always saying that if something should ever happen to her, she wanted them to be able to look back at the wonderful times they had together. They took annual trips to York Beach, Maine, they traveled to Spain, Disney, Niagara Falls, Washington D.C., and many local trips as well. She and her family purchased a camper in 2019 to take family trips with her beloved ECC. The memories made on those trips will last a lifetime. She had many memories of Lake Mattawa as a child and made sure her kids had “Mattawa memories” with their cousins and friends too.
Jillian and her sister Melanie built a circle of friends in their small town of Erving, MA, christened the “Erving Women’s Coalition” by Ryan. These women, their children, and extended families, have raised money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Dana Farber Jimmy Fund while forming a bond and friendships that have supported and celebrated each other since its beginning. This crew of companions have taken care of Jill’s family throughout and could never be repaid.
Being a competitive person throughout her life, and eager to challenge herself, Jilly trained in Tae Kwon Do at the Greenfield Tae Kwon Do Center under Master Dr. David Johnson. Increasing her circle of friends while working her way through the ranks. Jillian enjoyed the physical training, mental conditioning and fighting skills honed through many hours of practice and training. Determined to be a black belt by 40, she met many obstacles in that journey, with cancer being her largest opponent. She fought a hard and courageous battle and made it back to the DoJang to complete that goal, achieving a Red Belt in the summer of 2018 and being awarded her Black Belt in October 2021.
Jillian’s siblings were her strength, and she was theirs. Her sister Melanie was her big sister, but roles at times could switch and they pushed each other to get the most out of life. Jill championed her brother Josiah in all his pursuits and globetrotting, but she remained his hero. Her sister Shelagh was always ready for an expedition at the drop of the hat. When time eventually became short, these three stayed close and slept on the floor at her feet, protecting their sister from the unknown and comforting her till the end.
Jillian’s list of friends is expansive and infinite, but her best and longest friend, Shannon McCabe, has been her alter ego, confidant, and sister for her whole life. She remained the first-person Jill called and never more so than through this last hard-fought battle. Shannon was by her bedside, be it a hospital bed or her last bed. Jill loved her with her whole soul. Shannon and Steve Antonelli with Sofia, Bodie and Sully, meant the world to her. Shannon’s family always provided a welcoming home to Jill throughout her life, with Betty in Turners Falls and Jerry and Jennifer in Kennebunk.
Jillian was predeceased by her grandparents John and Annah Mackin and Joseph and Guyla Rodovich.  She leaves her father Michael Mackin of Turners Falls, her mother Marcia Payant and stepfather David Payant of Greenfield, her sister Melanie and Mark Burnett and their children Jakob, Dylan, and Cameron of Erving, brother Josiah Mackin of Utila, Honduras, sister Shelagh and Phil Andrikidis and their daughters Izabella and Rhea of Florence and youngest sister Sarah Smith and Adam Smith and their son Jake, of West Springfield. In-laws Gary and Paula Betters of Erving. Aunts and Uncles John and Barbara Mackin, MaryEllen Mackin, Tim and Ellen Mackin, Mary and Bruce Mainville, Diane and Ken Sumrall.  Cousins Shaun and Diana Mackin, Sarah Mackin and Luis Castilla, Kristyn and Rick Burke, Kelly and John Bell, Amanda and Mike Scola, Christopher Mackin and Jenny Cellucci, Kyle Mackin and Bryce Mainville, and many more extended family members. Jillian has left behind a personal legacy to always live each day as if it could be your last. Her motto, as many know, was “KFG” and that she did!
Jillian was well cared for and respected all her caregivers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital over the past few years, especially Dr. Kevin Elias, with whom Jillian and her family developed a personal rapport. She was well looked after by her visiting nurse Shadai Tirrell.
The family hopes people will remember Jilly Flynn with a smile, and maybe share a kindness with others as a way to celebrate the life lost too soon with too many good deeds left undone.
Death leaves a Heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a Memory no one can steal.
A Memorial Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday (3-23-22) at 10 AM at Our Lady of Peace Church 90 Seventh St, Turners Falls with Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit pastor officiating. Craig T. Belliveau - October 01, 1960 - January 07, 2022

Departed: 01/07/2022 (Montague)
Obituary Preview: Due to complications associated with Diabetes, Craig passed in his sleep at home on January 7, 2022. He is survived by his mother, Bobbie Rosenau, his sister Tracey Belliveau, his brother-in-law Ed Aronson, his niece Lorna Aronson, and his step-siblings, Thea Prostko, Kristen Marion and Bill Rosenau.  Craig was born in Worcester, Ma, and grew up in Easthampton, MA, where he graduated from Easthampton High School. He earned an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. He worked as a chef in a variety of restaurants in Florida and Massachusetts before becoming our mother’s caregiver. He lived to bake cheesecakes and cook for gatherings of family and friends. His menus always included steamers and mussels.  Craig was a Boston Bruins fan and played hockey for the Easthampton Hockey Association and Easthampton High School. He was an excellent defenseman and earned the nickname Casper, after coming off a too lengthy ice time, looking white as a ghost.  Craig enjoyed Jazz, Blues, and Rock and Roll. His taste in music was varied, and he counted Wynton Marsalis, Eric Clapton and Joe Bonamassa among his favorites. He had an extensive collection of CDs and always had a radio playing.  As our mother’s caregiver, Craig took her to appointments, cooked for her and maintained the house and the 10 acres of land that surround it. He would always leave her a reassuring note if she napped , telling her that he was out in the field, mowing. He painted the farm house last year by himself. Our mother has enjoyed feeding the birds her whole life, and Craig always made sure that her feeders were full. Bike riding, golf, darts, his Mazda Miata and the daily Greenfield Recorder crossword puzzle with Mom were a few of his pastimes. Craig loved tie-dye. His T-shirts, his bandanas worn cooking and working outside, his COVID masks, and chef’s pants all displayed those cheerful colors. The flights on his darts were obviously tie-dyed. Craig loved dogs and cats, and sported quite a few t-shirts with the faces of both. He is survived by his beloved cat, Leggs.  Donations to the Dakin Humane Society in honor of Craig can be made here: https:// www.dakinhumane.org/tribute-donation.html A celebration of Craig’s life will follow in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kostanski Funeral Home.  For condolences, please visit www.kostanskifuenralhome.com.

Tara M. Bannister - March 29, 1971 - December 20, 2021

Departed: 12/20/2021 (Montague)
Obituary Preview: Tara M. Bannister, 50, of Davis St. passed away on Monday (12/20/21) at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. She was born at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT on March 29, 1971 the daughter of Cedric and Geraldine (Hurlbut) Bannister.
Growing up in Turners Falls, she attended local schools until she attended Stoneleigh Burnham School in Greenfield, MA. At Stoneleigh Burnham, she was an avid singer and dancer. She was also very prominent in the Student Council and an extraordinary debater. She was a very proud Alumna who frequently spoke about how her all-girls school education was the backbone of all she endeavored.
Debate provided her with the opportunity to compete at the college level as she attended The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. She spent a semester at American University, but ended up graduating from USC on 1993 with the double majors of Political Science and International Relations.
Not surprisingly, Tara started a chapter of the Young Democrats at USC and later became the California Delegate to the National Young Democrats Association.
Tara had a keen interest in election law and it propelled her to work for many politicians like Mike Dukakis, Mike Woo, Kathleen Connell, and most notably as the Scheduler to the Lieutenant Governor of California, Gray Davis. Tara became the Senior Advisor to Governor Davis, when he was elected. She even ran for City Councilor of her District in Los Angeles, CA.
Recently, Tara was the Executive Director of the Apartment Owners Association of LA County. She had also been dabbling in entrepreneurship of small women owned businesses.
Although Tara lived in Southern California until September of 2020, she was proud to remind people that she worked to find funding for the Turners Falls High School renovation and that she also worked in the Connecticut State Government for a year.
Tara was a devout Christian. She attended All Saints’ Church in Beverly Hills, CA for 30 years. She was always signing a joyful noise in church and in one of her flashy convertibles. She would send gospel songs to her sister weekly when they touched her heart.
Tara is survived by the love of her life, her rescued dog, Moonshine; her father Cedric of Turners Falls and her sister Colleen Bannister of Greenfield. She was beloved by her many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins in New York, California, Ireland, and Wales. She was predeceased by her mother Geraldine “Jeri” on June20, 2021
Services will be at the convenience of her family.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Churches of St James and St Andrews, 8 Church St, Greenfield, MA 01301 or to Stoneleigh Burnham School, 574 Bernardston Rd, Greenfield, MA 01301.

Daniel J. Chevalier - October 13, 1947 - December 15, 2021

Departed: 12/15/2021 (Montague)
Obituary Preview: Daniel J. Chevalier, 74, of Turnpike Rd. passed away Wednesday (12-15-21) at home. Born in Holyoke, MA October 13, 1947 the son of James H. and Elizabeth F. (Laycock) Chevalier, Dan attended local schools and was a 1965 graduate of South Hadley High School. He graduated from U of Mass 1970 with BS in Wildlife Biology. Dan was awarded Conscientious Objector Status during the Vietnam draft and joined the Peace Corps.
Two sons were born four years and one day apart. Raised with a hard work ethic, they were shown love by action. Dan rarely if ever missed sporting events or the needs of his kids. In many cases actively coaching their teams, baseball and soccer, in which they excelled.
Dan was a lifelong learner but also a master of his trades. He taught himself construction by building his own post foundation home. His mechanical licenses, Master Plumber and Master Electrician were gained through hard work, study, building, and repairs. He then built several other duplex homes locally, before going on to develop, with a partner, the Randall Wood Circle in Montague. Always self-employed, Dan’s businesses included Happy Valley Handyman, Associated Plumbing and Electrical Co and Chevalier Plumbing and Electrical Co. He served as President of the FC Master Plumbers Association for one year. He had multiple business partners throughout his years in the trades.
While Dan had many interests, his passion for birdwatching was a lifelong pursuit. It included many travels to Central and South America. “Life bird” spotting included the Resplendent Quetzal from Guatemala and the Horned Guan from Central Mexico among many others. Dan exhibited the same approach to learning navigation and gaining a US Coast Guard license. A 40ft seaworthy trawler named Sea Star was purchased so his family could sail away, see the world, and gain priceless perspective. Diving certificates were attained to explore the gorgeous reefs sailed over. Honduran islands, Belize reefs and remote offshore places such as Roncador Bank required freediving and spearfishing skills to “live off the land”
Returning from the sabbatical year, Randall Wood was nearing completion and Dan was considering more travel. At his retirement he and Kathryn returned to the Western Caribbean on a new boat, sailing out of Florida and for 10 years “living the dream”. Dan’s ocean travel experiences and mechanical skills helped many boaters, and he will be missed in the community.
The family is grateful to the doctors and nurses of M.G.H.and C.D.H. who administered trials and treatment on Dan’s behalf. His courageous battle was lost nearly three years after a StageIV lung cancer diagnosis came out of the blue.
Dan leaves his wife of 51 years Kathryn (Augustine) Chevalier, his sons; Steven D. Chevalier wife Christa, and two granddaughters and Thomas J. Chevalier, wife Anina Kostecki and one granddaughter . Dan enjoyed some time with his three grandchildren. He also leaves his nephew Steven Chevalier (the Elder) and his niece Sharra Canan. Besides his parents Dan was predeceased by his brother James H. Chevalier Jr. in 1959.
A Celebration of Life will be at a later time and date to be announced.
