Betty Jean Perino - January 13, 1931 - January 17, 2024

Departed: 01/17/2024 (Roebling)
Obituary Preview: BETTY JEAN [PANARO] PERINO
Betty Jean "BJ" Perino, a lifelong Florence resident, passed into God's eternal care on January 17th, 2024. She passed peacefully in her sleep at home surrounded by her loving children, at the age of 93 years and 4 days. She remained healthy, active and engaged in her hobbies and interests until her recent illness. In one of the many family talks around her bed in her final days, she said she couldn't have asked for a better ending to a wonderful life – loved and cared for by her children, and surrounded by loving family and friends. She was born to Michaelangelo and Nellie [Cowan] Panaro on January 13th, 1931 in Florence, NJ. She acquired her legendary "green thumb" by following her father around the family business, the Florence Green House. She attended Florence High School (Class of 1948) where she met the love of her life, Anthony "Tony" Perino. They married on January 8th, 1951 in Reno, NV and until his death in 2020, celebrated every anniversary by recreating their first meal as a married couple – lamb chops, asparagus, and baked potato. Tony built the family home, and together they filled it with children, laughter, love, and memories to last a lifetime. Betty Jean had many superpowers. She loved gardening and growing flowers and could grow anything. She once tucked the seed from an orange she was eating into a potted plant on her desk. Ten years and seven feet later, Dad had to make a rolling platform for it so she could move it around seasonally. She was a gifted seamstress who somehow found the time to sew most of the clothes for her seven children and all of the neighborhood Barbie dolls. A notoriously picky eater herself, her cooking and baking skills were unsurpassed even for food she wouldn't eat. Her gnocchi could float off the plate, and you were lucky to be the recipient of a box of her fudge at Christmas. She was creative and artistic and mastered any craft she undertook. Together with daughter Michele, they sold their crafts at many bazaars and craft shows as "Mom and Me." Late in life, when she finally had time to sit down and take a breath, she discovered two new loves: reading books and watching "The Gilmore Girls" over and over again. She was their biggest fan. She loved boating at the Jersey shore with Tony and her family and spent many hours in the waters off Tuckerton aboard their boat, the "Miss Toni Jean."
Betty Jean worked at Griffin Pipe Products (Florence, NJ) where she started as the switchboard operator and retired from the Shipping Office. She made many lifelong friends at Griffin and kept in regular contact with many of them. Her Christmas card list was extensive. This was the first year she missed the Griffin Ladies Lunch.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, Betty Jean is survived by her sons Ernest (Lori), Michael (Alyson) and Anthony Jr. (Patricia); daughters Donna Ballas (Mike), Kim Perino-Michael (Stephen), and Michele King (Les), son-in-law, Robert Semptimphelter, 17 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren and 2 on the way! Many nieces and nephews also mourn her loss. She was predeceased by her husband Tony, her daughter Toni Jean Semptimphelter, her parents, and all of her siblings - brothers Robert, Daniel, Alvin, Dave, and Edward Panaro, and sisters Helen Henderson and Lois Pieretti. Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Avenue, Roebling, New Jersey with Rev. Cesar Anson officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Florence. Flowers are appreciated as are donations to the Florence Township Emergency Medical Services, 401 Firehouse Lane, Florence, NJ 08518. Condolences may be sent to www.koschekandporterfuneralhome.com

Marion E. Hay - April 13, 1943 - November 30, 2023

Departed: 11/30/2023 (Roebling)
Obituary Preview: Marion Eleanor Hay Obituary
It is with great sorrow and bittersweet gratitude that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sis, and dear friend: Marion Eleanor Hay on November, 30th 2023. She returned to God peacefully at home with her husband by her side.
Marion was born on April 13, 1943 in the town of Hulmeville, PA. Her move to New Jersey brought her education from Rider University and her beloved husband of 60 years, Donald Maurice Hay.
Together, in Columbus, NJ, Marion and Don raised 4 daughters and shared the passing of a 5th daughter. They lived in homes built and decorated with their own hands. They taught their daughters to grow their own food, care for a variety of animals, the meaning of conservation and sharing, the foundational ideals of family, and the bonds of loyalty.
Marion worked full-time as Deputy Clerk for the Township of Mansfield until she retired. She has always been active with her church, Columbus Methodist, but she dedicated much of her time and energy after retirement to church administrative tasks and to the choir. Her faith in God was unyielding as was her church family.
Within her community, she devoted her energy and leadership skills to the Garden Club and the Homeowner’s Association. Her fondness for books, conversation, gardening, swimming, sewing, baking, and traveling kept her mind and body nourished. Like a mermaid, the ocean was her sanctuary, and she passed on her love for the water and the outdoors to her family.
Most notably, Marion was known for her warm and inviting smile and personality. In fact, she was nicknamed “Susie Sunshine” by those closest to her. Her compassion and love for every person she met was unforgettable. Though she lived with blood cancer for 20 years, her own needs never took the forefront. She gave rather than received. She was grateful to Dr. Seth Berk and his team for the excellent medical care and empathy they provided for over 20 years.

Ronald G. Marinelli - May 26, 1944 - November 20, 2023

Departed: 11/20/2023 (Roebling)
Obituary Preview: Ronald G. Marinelli, of Florence, New Jersey passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023. He was 79 years old.
Born in Seattle, Washington to Romeo and Olga (Ovacz) Marinelli in May of 1944, baby Ronnie and his mom took the train back east, where family lived, as dad Romeo deployed to the Philippines.
Feisty since the day he was born, Ronnie was sent to Catholic school to begin his pious path. It was during his early days at school, when a classmate was reading about Prince Matchabelli, and dubbed Ronnie, “The Prince,” a nickname which stuck with him for his entire life.
It was while attending Holy Cross High School, where he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Faye Chiaccio, whom he married in 1967. They were married for 49 years until Faye’s untimely death in 2017.
After high school, Ron, following in his dad and grandfather Dominic’s footsteps, served his country by joining the New Jersey National Guard.
Ron became a popular businessman in town, working side by side with his parents at their hair salon, Romeo and Son’s Hairstyling. They treated their costumers like family and had many lifelong loyal customers.
Ron was especially close with his beloved mother, Olga, often telling the story of how she saved his life when he was an infant.
Being in the beauty industry, Ron took great pride in how things looked, such as his appearance, his home, his lawn and his Riviera cars. He enjoyed doing yard work and tending to his garden.
He also was proud of his Italian and Hungarian heritage and loved the delicious foods from these cultures, smelts on Christmas Eve and bacon bread on the 4th of July.
He enjoyed vacationing at the Jersey shore with his family and eventually purchased a beach house in Seaside Park, NJ where he would fish, crab, and entertain family and friends.
Ron was a member of the Marconi Lodge and served as the treasurer for many years. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the club and had many lasting friendships from the club days.
He was also a member of the Florence American Legion Post 194 and a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He was a history buff and storyteller. His sharp recall and memory came in handy when relaying facts in conversations and telling stories to family and friends, a skill he was quite proud of. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Faye. He is survived by his daughters, Alisa (Dave) Brotz and Gina (David) Zimecki. He is also survived by his sister Maria Csik, many nieces, nephews, and favorite cousin Ann Ovacz.
