Lyle Lynn Thomas - August 13, 1945 - September 06, 2020

Departed: 09/06/2020 (Lake Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Lyle Lynn Thomas, 75, of Hastings, formerly of Allegan, fell asleep in death September 6, 2020 at Hastings Rehabilitation and Health Center after an extended battle with Vascular Dementia.  He was born August 13, 1945.  He often told his children that when the Japanese heard he had been born they surrendered.  He took credit for his birth ending World War II.
Lyle was the youngest child of Earl M and Leva Lucille (Frederick) Thomas.  There were three older brothers and one older sister.
Lyle was predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles (Mighty), his brother Robert (Bob), and grandson Alexander James Thomas.
Lyle is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mona, their sons Charles (Carrie) Thomas, Frederick (Cecilia) Thomas, daughters Julia (Matt) Christman, and Kathleen (John) Wass, grandsons Joseph and Henry Thomas, and granddaughter Honora Lea Wass, brother James (Phyllis) Thomas, sister Earleen (John) Barber, and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Lyle grew up on a farm and was no stranger to chores. His father would say “to find the easiest way to do a job, give it to the laziest person” and assign Lyle the task.  Being the youngest he occasionally found himself with some free time.  This gave him time to observe and appreciate the wonders of nature.
Lyle graduated from Allegan High School in 1963.  He joined the Marine Reserves and, after basic training, spent some time in Puerto Rico before his discharge in 1970.  He worked some printing related jobs in Kalamazoo before working with Wedge Office Machines in Allegan, doing both sales and service. He also sold and serviced sewing machines for various sewing related shops.  Lyle also worked as a projectionist at the Regent Theater in Allegan.  When he moved to Hastings in 1984 he established Advantage Business Machines and sold and serviced office and sewing machines independently.
Lyle loved live theater.  He volunteered countless hours with the Allegan Community Players working on lighting and sound designs and other technical aspects of live performances. He was equally happy backstage or as an audience member, loving to attend shows at the Augusta Barn, WMU’s Miller Auditorium, or a local high school or community theater group. He experienced extra thrills when his wife or one of his children were performing.
He also loved being outdoors.  Taking the family on camping trips and sharing his appreciation for the surroundings, and campfires, brought him great joy.  His children were given every opportunity to observe the awesome wonders of creation. They were taken to waterfalls, canyons, mountains, lakesides, zoos, forests, historic sites and places of scientific importance.
He took great delight in watching his children grow into the fantastic, well-rounded adults they are today. As each one found a mate and married, Lyle’s heart expanded to welcome the new family member. His greatest joy came with the birth of grandchildren. Dubbed Pop-pop, Lyle doted on each new baby as if it were the only baby in the universe.  Even in his last days a photo of the grandchildren would bring a smile to his face.
Lyle was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hastings, being baptized in 1998.  He had faith in the promise of an awakening from death. His family looks forward to welcoming him back and to Revelation 21:4 finally being fulfilled.
Respecting his wishes cremation has taken place.  A virtual memorial service is being planned. If you wish to make a charitable donation in Lyle’s name please consider a gift to the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, your favorite zoo, Elara Caring Hospice, or the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital NICU.
The family thanks the staff at Hastings Rehabilitation and Health Center and Elara Caring Hospice for the care they gave Lyle. The timing of his residency and the pandemic lockdown created challenges unlike anything we were prepared for. Thank you for your steadfast attention during these difficult times.
The family is also very grateful for the services provided by Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa.

Robert "Bob" J Durkee - August 24, 1946 - July 26, 2020

Departed: 07/26/2020 (Lake Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Robert J. (Bob) Durkee, 72, of Lake Odessa passed away on July 26, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.   He was born on August 24, 1946 to Ronald and Helen Imogene (Mutschler) Durkee in Lake Odessa.
Bob grew up on a family farm, he was the boy his dad was waiting for. He had two older sisters who helped raise him. He loved his cap guns.
He grew up farming, and had a natural ability at sports and fixing automobiles. He loved fishing and cutting wood.
While serving in Vietnam (driving a bulldozer) the Army taught him a few things. 1) He liked running a projector (going forward he became the family 8mm camera operator) 2) There is a limit to how much rice a farm boy from Michigan will eat, and he reached that limit. (We never saw him eat rice)
3) And even after offering to make him a helicopter pilot the Army life wasn't for him.
He came home and married Marian Benson and had three kids, he always worked hard and never turned down overtime. But he also never missed a gymnastics meet, baseball game, football game, softball game, wrestling meet, cross country, soccer game, choir concert, musical. And he didn't just set in the stands, he coached Baseball (having played himself) coached wrestling (not really knowing how) but that didn't stop him from wrestling with his sons on the living room carpet (until two black eyes ended his living room wrestling career). He officiated freestyle wrestling, and so did all three kids, including his daughter! (Something rarely seen in the 80's and 90's)
He didn't have just a strong back he also played Chess. This would sometimes end with the board being flipped. He enjoyed playing Euchre and was a regular poker player in Marty Johnson's garage.
As Grandkids came along he followed them thru their sports and was more than happy to teach them how to take care of their cars.
He loved liver and onions (only his daughter will carry that on), and gizzards. (Some grandkids like them) Rocky Mountain Oysters (No one, and I mean no one will eat those).
His shop was his "work place" after retirement from TRW in Portland. Before it had been his weekend place, then it became is daily job. He loved to hunt, and his Durkee Deer Camp is a thing of legends. Beer was drank (ok a lot of beer and maybe a shot or two), Stories were told, Chili was eaten and they might have bagged a deer or two. (As evidenced by the the antlers decorating the wall)
If the shop light was on, Bob was ready to tell you how you were not changing that wheel bearing the right way, often pushing you out of the way and doing it himself. (Which is what we secretly wanted him to do) He taught his daughter, sons, granddaughters and grandsons alike. Changing your oil, or a wheel bearing should and could be done by anyone. (And if you needed a haircut he'd let you know that too) When you were done the shop had to look like it did when you started. (You'd hear about it if a tool was out of place or left dirty)
The shop TV usually had MASH, Gunsmoke, John Wayne, College Wresting or Tiger baseball and for reasons none of us understood old gameshows. And we don't mean classics, he'd watch reruns of Steve Harvey's Family Feud.
While he could be a taskmaster, we also watched him lovingly care for his wife's broken bones, and in the last few months he grew quite attached to his great grandson. Even holding him as his arms grew weak from the ALS that may have bent him, but never broke his spirit.
The family offers a special thank you to Heather Rush (delivering groceries and spending time talking) and his granddaughter Christi (his minute by minute care giver in his final months and this allowed him to pass at home on the family farm) for all their extra effort.
And to all the people who have made dinners, checked in, and offered so much support we could not have done it without you.
He will be lovingly missed by: wife of 52 years Marian, children; Kevin (Amaya), Jan (Joey) Jackson and Kyle (Heather), grandchildren; Darrin (Margaret), Kyle, Brandon, Gabriel, Elias, LaReina, Christi, Joey III, John (Patrice), Cole, Remington, Kayli, Karli, Great-Grandchildren; Apollo, Cadance and James, sister Carolyn Mayhew, step father Stan Strickland along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death are: father Ronald Durkee, mother Helen Strickland, sister Lois Jackson, brother in law Bob Mayhew.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place and celebration will be held at the family farm 3425 Durkee Rd, Lake Odessa, MI 48849 on August 22, 2020 from 1pm – 5pm.  Donation to the Lakewood Wrestling Club in Lieu of flowers would be appreciated.

Obituary Preview: Elden Jackson, born November 6, 1931, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, after reaching the age of 88 years old. After a brief time of failing health, he passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family – in person and in spirit. Elden had a love of painting, home building, farming, and serving others. He was honored to have had a piece of his artwork displayed at Art Prize. He donated many hours of his time and talent to numerous individuals and organizations, including moving the United Brethren Church onto a new foundation and then building an addition to the existing structure. He was also responsible for the construction of Faith Bible Church. Elden spent many months doing construction projects at Camp Living Waters. Many individuals have benefited from his help and experience, including the countless young men he mentored, helping them become productive, conscientious, and successful. Elden was known for his hard work and energetic spirit well into his later years. He took great pride in doing a job and doing it well; mediocrity or “good enough” were not part of his vocabulary. Elden’s innate belief in others’ abilities weren’t bound by age or gender; he expected everyone to pull their weight and contribute at the highest level – from having his children pick rocks in the field before school to enlisting his grandchildren to plant backyard gardens. Elden empowered and inspired everyone to show up, work hard, and do their best. Elden was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Thelma Jackson, his wife W. Numerous nieces and nephews and a slew of other Jacksons. Elden’s characteristic smile, bright blue eyes, checkered shirt and leather vest, and the generous use of “pot-licker” as a term of endearment, were a source of playfulness and comfort to his family and friends. Elden was a strong, generous, proud, and good man. He leaves a strong legacy of faith, work ethic, servant leadership, no-nonsense, and practical approach to life. He is loved and will be missed by many.

Phylis Doreen Armstrong - December 03, 1924 - June 23, 2020

Departed: 06/23/2020 (Lake Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Phylis Doreen Armstrong (December 2, 1924 - June 23, 2020)
Phylis Doreen Armstrong passed away at her home on June 23, 2020, from natural causes. Phylis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Harold and Beatrice Cutler, the second of five children George Darwin, Phylis Doreen, Theodore Lee, Margaret Clare, and David Arthur. Her father, a high school shop teacher, moved the family from the city to a farm near Middleville, Michigan during the Great Depression. There she completed her high school education while learning about life on a farm without indoor plumbing.
After graduation, Phylis found part-time work at a restaurant where she met Theodore (Ted) Armstrong, a local farmer. He quickly became a regular customer and the two were married on May 1, 1943. While operating the Armstrong family farm together with Ted, Phylis gave birth to their first son, Theodore Paul, on March 4, 1945. Phylis and Ted gave up the sandy hills of their Middleville farm and moved to 120 acres of flat fertile land in Lake Odessa to start a dairy farm with registered Holstein cattle. The family continued to grow with the birth of their second son, Thomas Jeffrey, on April 1, 1949, and daughter, Kathy Suzanne, on April 19, 1954. The dairy farm continued to grow to a total of 50-60 milk cows in the mid-1960s. Phylis was always involved in the business of farming -- milking cows, herding cows, feeding cows, preparing feasts for harvest crews, and an endless number of other tasks essential to farm life. Still, she always found time to make celebratory meals for the holidays, birthdays, and other special events, and spent many late nights caring for her family when they were ill or they needed something for school the next day. Her intense work ethic and high personal standards provided a powerful example for her children. During this time, Phylis and Ted’s main diversions were Saturday evening square dances, and once a year trips to Florida for some R and R.
Phylis and Ted gave up dairy farming in 1976 after Ted was injured by falling from a load of hay. Following a few tours around the country in a motorhome, Phylis and Ted entered the real estate business and moved from their farmhouse on Tupper Lake Road to a new home on M66. They were delighted to live on a paved road. Following ten years in real estate, Phylis and Ted officially retired. During their retirement, Ted made small woodcraft items in his workshop that Phylis, a talented artist, painted with great detail. She also created many landscape paintings that now adorn the homes of her surviving family and friends. In their later years, Phylis and Ted took special pleasure in an annual two-week gathering of friends for fishing and socializing on Lake Cadillac. Following Ted’s passing in 2011, Phylis moved into Lake Odessa where she oversaw the remodeling of her home and planted a perennial garden. She also became a regular patron of the Lake Odessa Public Library after moving into town.
Phylis was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church from the time she and Ted first moved to Lake Odessa in 1948. They made many close friends there. The family is grateful for all the support from the church community that helped make it possible for her to live in her own home during her final years.
Phylis is survived by her son Tom and his wife Mary, grandson David and his wife, Shannon Delahaye, great-granddaughter Maggie, granddaughter Katherine and her husband Andres Tellez, great-grandchildren William and Joanna Tellez, granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband Christopher Vidale, great-grandsons Francis and Max Vidale, granddaughter Suzanne Swift-Cook and great-grandchildren Nuriel Cook and Earen Zandstra, and granddaughter Rachel Anderson and her husband Travis, great-grandson Adam Anderson.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any donations in Phylis’ name be directed to the Lake Odessa Public Library or Central United Methodist Church of Lake Odessa.

Betty B Kauffman - July 09, 1935 - June 01, 2020

Departed: 06/01/2020 (Lake Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Betty B (Leazenby) Kauffman of Lake Odessa, passed on to God’s glorious garden on Monday, June 1, 2020 after an extended illness.
Born in Hastings on July 9, 1935, she was the daughter of Linzey and Opal (Heaven) Leazenby and grew up on the family farm in Clarksville. She graduated in 1953 from Saranac High School where she met the love of her life, Roger. They were married after graduation and started a family soon after. Roger and Betty lived in several small homes before settling their own farm on Campbell Road. Farm life suited Betty well, and she grew a flower and vegetable garden that was the envy of the county.
Along with gardening, Betty’s favorite hobbies also included collecting recipes, cooking, playing cards and finding yard sale bargains. She was known by many names including Grandma Florida, Skip Bo Queen, and “penny pincher”. Her negotiating skills were top notch as she was well known for offering a nickel for something priced at 10 cents.
After raising their family, Roger and Betty moved to Bradenton, Florida where they resided for over 33 years. Betty enjoyed the change of scenery and learning how to grow tropical plants. The warm weather year around also allowed her to double down on yard sales and she expanded her Christmas decorations to include villages and spent weeks hanging hundreds of outdoor lights for the holidays. It was also in Florida that Betty began adopting miniature Pinscher dogs, including Bruiser, Minnie, and Pinnie who was with her until the end.
Betty sowed many seeds that flourished into wonderful, loving people. She is survived by four children; Dennis (Karen) Kauffman, David (Melanie) Kauffman, Darlene Kauffman, and Deb Kauffman (Matt Buche); 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Phyllis Lindhaut and Joy Boger. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Roger; her oldest son, Dan and her oldest daughter, Diane; grandchildren Derek and Tadum;  brother, Wayne; step-brother, Tom and step-sister, Wanita.
Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6 for a graveside service at Woodland Cemetery, officiated by nephew and pastor, Bob Hudberg. The family welcomes extended family and friends to a backyard garden open house to visit and reminisce from 1 to 3 p.m. at Betty’s home 918 Sixth Avenue in Lake Odessa.
In lieu of sending flowers, please plant something beautiful outdoors in her honor.

Norma Bever - November 21, 1919 - May 19, 2020

Departed: 05/19/2020 (Lake Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Norma Bever, known to many as “Grandma B”, found her way home to Heaven the morning of May 19th, 2020, at 100 years old. Norma was born November 21st, 1919 to Arlow and Mildred (Leak) Aves in Sebewa Township. She was the second of four sisters, following older sister Elaine Austin and followed by sisters Christine Towner and Marjorie Swiler. Norma married Marshall Bever on October 12, 1940, who was later killed in battle in WWII. Norma never remarried. Norma is reunited with her parents, all three sisters, and husband, but leaves a large family. Norma and Marshall had two daughters, Barbara Teichmann and Arlene Sandborn, Seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Norma lived her life by sharing everything she had. She was an active member of the Sebewa Baptist Church, Ionia and Hastings 4-H for over 40 years and serving anyone who walked through her front door. She was happiest when she was laughing about the past, watching the birds and swaying Hollyhocks through the window, being surrounded by friends and family, and sharing an iced tea or her famous apple pie squares. Grandma B did not fear death, maybe it is because she will never fully die. The sunshine in her soul created a light in everyone she met, a light that no darkness could defeat. One could not fit the century of Norma’s life into a novel, let alone a short obituary. Please help celebrate Norma Bever’s life with her family at a later date. Special thanks to Emily Sandborn for putting together the obituary for grandma.
