Sophie Harbuziuk - December 25, 1928 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Lombard)
Obituary Preview: Sophia "Sophie" Harbuziuk, a member of the Ukrainian Baptist Church of Chicago since 1949, and a longtime resident of Elmhurst, entered the presence of Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the age of 95.
She was the widow of well-known Ukrainian Baptist pastor, preacher, radio broadcaster, church association leader and magazine editor Rev. Olexa R. Harbuziuk, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Harbuziuk took her last breath on Earth in the evening while being treated in a hospital in a suburb of Chicago. Mrs. Harbuziuk had resided in Elmhurst for about 57 years, then had been living for nine years at the Holmstad, a retirement community in Batavia, Illinois.
Sophia was born December 25, 1928, in the village of Rudka, Poland. The village used to be part of Ukraine.
When Sophia was 14 years old, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized by immersion at the local Baptist church.
As a young teenager during World War II, Sophia left home for Germany as a refugee. She was forced to work in a labor camp, where she felt God's protection. The labor camp eventually was freed by the American Army. That is where she met the love of her life and married Olexa in 1946. They had two children in Germany.
Then in 1949, a ship brought the family to America and a train brought them to Chicago, where Olexa became pastor of the Ukrainian Baptist Church.
Five more children were born in America. Sophie spent her married life being a devoted and loving wife and mother rearing her seven children.
Sister Harbuziuk sang in the church choir for many years and was an active member of the women's circle.
A highlight in Sophie's life came in 1990, when she and her husband visited Ukraine. Sophia was able to see her siblings for the first time since about 1944.
Surviving Sophie are her seven children: Helen (Phil) Bus, Alex (Luba), Irene DeWolf, Leela (Ray) Lohr, Vera (Ken) Gustafson, Wayne (Hannah), and Elizabeth (Ed) Bius; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He did everything from working at the circus to moving casino tables to working at the Odeum. He proudly earned his GED and became a US citizen in 1996. Arturo was a hard worker who did his best to provide for his family, sometimes having only an hour between jobs to take a quick nap. He retired from CEF Industries in 2011 and worked as a volunteer for Elmhurst Hospital for a while. After his volunteering stint, he traveled with Rosie and devoted himself to his children and grandchildren.
Arturo was a vibrant, charismatic man who was loved by everyone he met-he always "knew a guy" because he had friends everywhere. However, he was most devoted to his wife Rosie, as well as his children and grandchildren. He was the epitome of fashion, always dressed in a freshly pressed button-down shirt and dress pants with his fedora of the day and his dress shoes when he picked up his granddaughters from school. He cheered on his grandsons as they played football and baseball throughout the years, and proudly attended his granddaughters' various concerts and performances. He enjoyed watching terrible movies with his sons, loved going on road trips with his daughter, and especially loved going to his favorite stores and restaurants. Life with Arturo was never boring, and his loved ones will miss their adventures with him.
Arturo is survived by his children: John (Erin) Herrera, Diane (Eddie) Piña, and James Herrera, as well as his grandchildren Alex Herrera, Jacob (Denali) Herrera, Allie Piña, Andrew Herrera and Mila Piña. He is also survived by his siblings Consuelo (Juan) Davila, Josefina (Rosario) Perez, Patricia (Jesus) Garcia, and Armando (Rosy) Herrera, and his many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Estella and Miguel; his siblings Josefina, Roberto, Ruben and Jose Jesus; his beautiful wife Rosemary Herrera and his son David Herrera.
