Mary Miller - January 03, 1942 - May 14, 2023

Departed: 05/14/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: Sister Mary Miller, OSB, 81, died on May 14, 2023, at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania after a short illness.
Sister Mary was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Sylvia Mae (Hart) and Bernard Miller and was baptized in their home parish of St. Agatha. She graduated from St. Agatha High School in 1960 and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in Erie, Pennsylvania, making final vows in 1969 and receiving the name Sister Gabrielle.
While a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Mary taught in elementary schools in the Diocese of Erie including Villa Maria, St. Ann, and St. Andrew in Erie and Notre Dame in Hermitage. She also served as principal at St. Andrew. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Villa Maria College, Erie, in 1967 followed by a Master of Education degree in religious education from Boston College in 1974.
Sister Mary served as religious coordinator at St. John the Baptist Parish in Erie until 1979 when she began working in social services, first at Community House for Women and then, from 1981 until her death, as director of Emmaus Soup Kitchen, an outreach of the Benedictine Sisters.
In 1984 Sister Mary began the transfer process from the Sisters of St. Joseph to the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, becoming fully incorporated in the Benedictine community in 1987.
During her 42 years leading Emmaus, its outreach grew from a soup kitchen that served a daily meal to Erie’s hungry to a multi-faceted ministry of service to the poor, Emmaus Ministries. Sister Mary oversaw the expansion and improvement of physical facilities in addition to an increase in programs including the Emmaus Food Pantry, Sister Gus’ Kids Cafe, and Emmaus Grove: The Erie Urban Farm School. The most recent Emmaus project was the establishment of The Studio at St. Mary’s: Space to Create that opened in the former St. Mary’s school building that also houses the Kids Cafe. The artistic space in the inner-city upholds the Emmaus mission of providing “bread for the body, care for the soul.” It also won a 2017 Greater Erie Award from Preservation Erie for the building renovation that added stability, spirituality, and beauty to the neighborhood.
Another oasis of beauty in the inner-city overseen by Sister Mary is the East 22nd Street Poetry Park. Sister Mary was a co-founder of the Trinity Square Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating the East 22nd Street neighborhood where she lived and where the park is located.
For her many contributions within the Erie community, Sister Mary has received numerous awards and commendations, including Erie Times-News Achiever of the Year, 1993, Mercy Center for Women Woman Making History, 1995, Erie County Community Service Award, 1999, Gannon University Distinguished Pennsylvanian, 1999, and Erie Times-News Five People Who Made a Difference and Her Times Extraordinary Woman, 2012, Oscar Romero Social Justice Award from Mercyhurst University, 2016, Notre Dame Alumni Club of Erie Humanitarian of the Year Award, 2016.
Sister Mary was often invited by organizations, church congregations, and groups throughout the city to speak about her work with Emmaus. Equally soft-spoken and passionate, the stories of her personal relationships with the guests who dine at Emmaus made visible for her hearers the lives of those in Erie who are most often forgotten and overlooked.
When she was not attending to the needs of others, Sister Mary enjoyed reading, gardening, and golf.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Anne Miller. She is survived by her brother, Sam, her Benedictine community, and by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Services will take place at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery: Tuesday, May 16, Visitation from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Service of Memories at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday May 17, Visitation from 2:00-5:00 p.m. followed by a Liturgical Celebration of the Life of Sister Mary at 5:30 p.m. Kloecker-Bailey Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4396 Iroquois Avenue, is handling arrangements. Dorothy Jane Ahlfield - May 03, 1936 - April 02, 2023

Departed: 04/02/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Jane Ahlfield Date of Birth:  May 3, 1936 Date of Death: April 2, 2023
Having lived a long and fulfilling life, Dorothy Jane Ahlfield, of North East, Pennsylvania, passed away quietly on April 2, 2023, at the UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, PA.  She was 86 years old.  Jane, as she was known by all, was the daughter of the late Richard B. Schlaudecker and the late Dorothy Jane (Dede) Schlaudecker Ryberg, born to them on May 3, 1936, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Erie, PA.
Jane loved recalling how, as a young girl growing up in Erie and known fondly by friends as DJ, she would walk through all kinds of weather...including the bitter snows of winter... to and from Harding Elementary School and later, in her middle grades, Strong Vincent School.  As a high school senior, she graduated in 1954 from what was then Mercyhurst Seminary, known today as Mercyhurst Preparatory School.  For several semesters beyond high school, she attended St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana.  Afterwards, during her first marriage to Joseph Conrath, also of Erie, she gave birth to two sons, cited below.
Jane was predeceased by her eldest sister, Roylee Simpson McCullough of Alexandria, VA.  Thankfully though, she is survived by many: her husband of 46 years, Richard E. Ahlfield, her two sons (Richard J. Conrath (Timi) of Loudoun County, VA.; David A. Conrath (Deena) of Louisa County, VA.), her daughter (Jane Elizabeth Ahlfield of Richmond, VA.), her two younger sisters (Marcella (Marcy) Schlaudecker Bowles of Erie, PA.; Dixie Schlaudecker Sayles of Erie, PA.), two grandsons (Hunter R. Conrath of Henrico, VA. and Parker H. Conrath of Broomfield, CO.), and a loving cohort of nephews and nieces.
Throughout her life, Jane was immensely creative, talented, and productive.  As her mother observed, “that child can do anything with her hands!”  Time proved that statement correct.  Whether she was knitting, cross-stitching, sewing, or making macramé wall hangings, her creations were always inventive, visually appealing, and reflective of advanced craftsmanship. However, pottery and basketry were her true creative passions.  She exhibited and marketed her works continuously during a 25-year period, during which time she achieved professional recognition and acclaim.  She specialized in high-fired functional stoneware, primitive pit-fired sculptural pieces, and exquisite artisan baskets made of natural materials gathered from the woods.  Her work served as an inspiration for many and rendered objects of great pleasure and satisfaction to the advanced aesthetic eye.
Beyond her artistic output, Jane was employed for 12 years in the Mathews Memorial Library, where she became known to children and their parents as “Miss Jane.”  Many a child enjoyed the weekly story times and many a parent was grateful for the sensitivity and care Miss Jane provided to “her” children.
Jane was a devoted mother, an avid reader, a nature lover and bird watcher, a lifelong dog owner, and a collector of period American antiques that were compatible with her 19th century wood-framed country home in Mathews County, VA.  During her later years, Jane divided her time between Mathews County and North East, PA.  She found great inner peace by living alongside large bodies of water, including her beloved James River, the Chesapeake Bay, and again...later in life... Lake Erie.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date, followed by a private interment at Trinity Cemetery in Erie, PA.  In support of strong communities and all who read or are learning to read, donations may be made to Mathews Memorial Library in Mathews, VA. or to McCord Memorial Library in North East, PA.
Family members wish to acknowledge the Kloecker-Bailey Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. which assisted with final arrangements.

Margaret Carol Litzinger - November 21, 1942 - January 18, 2023

Departed: 01/18/2023 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: Margaret Carol Litzinger, or Carol as she was known to everyone, left this world January 18, 2023, joining Mike, her husband of 60 Years. Faithful sister to Kathy and Stanley. Devoted mother to Heidi, Beth, Gretchen, Mary and Randy. Obliging mother-in-law to Chuck, John, Stephen, Erik and Michele. Adoring grandmother to Lucas, Dylan, Matthew, Victoria, Avery, Michael, Hunter, Myla, and Mackenzie. Thrilled grandmother-in-law to Deidra, Avery and Allyson. Amazing great-grandmother to Charleigh and Emerson. Endearing aunt to Chrissy, Keri, Vinnie, Amelia, Andy, and Tommy. A feeder of many and friend to all.
Carol raised five children with her husband Mike without the aid of the internet.  Since this was the seventies, she was the primary caregiver, cook, cleaner, chauffeur, advocate, nurse, and therapist.  Her diminutive stature and her cheerful disposition belied her nerves of steel and powers of perception.  Grown men often feared her. Never a victim to the shortage of time and lack of disposable income, her children never went without a uniform, a dress to wear to a dance or a new pair of jeans for the first day of school.  She could and often did feed five children with five dollars and on at least one occasion, with the coins she found in the couch. However, she could sense from the kitchen if you were doing something wrong in the sunroom.  She was a stay-at-home mom who was too busy to actually stay home. As her children grew and left the house, she let others stay at her home, some related, some not.
She was a young mother whose reward was that she became a young grandmother. She lavished attention on her grandchildren and conveniently forgot the rules she had placed on her own children. With a Tupperware of cookies in hand, Carol attended every game, meet, match, recital, parade, and grandparent’s day she could get her hands on.  Her pride and devotion to her grandchildren was unwavering.
When she could have relaxed, with her youngest in high school, she went back to school obtaining certification as a nurse’s aide. She worked at Twinbrook Nursing Home serving the elderly. As she did in all facets of her life, she went above and beyond what was asked of her.
Most people find excuses to not help those in need. Carol worked tirelessly as a volunteer throughout her life - as a young mother, new to the workforce or in retirement. In years when it seemed men’s volunteer organizations made all the rules and therefor received the credit, Carol led several women’s auxiliary organizations, serving in the background, often unsung.  Carol ran the rummage sale at the United Methodist Church, which not only funded the church, but provided supplies to neighbors in need. In later years, she also worked at Kid’s Cafe, mentoring children, and providing meals, knowing that a hungry child cannot learn.
One of Carol’s delightful quirks was her inability to finish telling a story.  Perhaps it is fitting that we struggled to sum up her story in a few paragraphs.  If her husband was the personality and voice of the family, Carol was certainly its heart and its backbone.  Her impact on this world was focused and yet somehow everlasting. With the door continuously unlocked, and the kitchen never closed, no one left Carol’s home hungry or unhappy.

Pamela A Chrzanowski - January 29, 1947 - October 20, 2022

Departed: 10/20/2022 (Erie)
Obituary Preview: Pamela A. (Pomorski) Chrzanowski January 29, 1947 – October 20, 2022 She lived her life believing you don’t “sweat the small stuff.”
The beloved family of Pam Chrzanowski sadly announces her passing on Thursday, October 20, 2022. She was 75 years young.
Devoted wife, mom, grandma, sister, daughter, and friend, Pam died surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with Leukemia.
A lifelong resident of Erie, Pam and her loving husband of 54 years, John, spent their time at their home in Erie during the colder winter months with roaring fires and good home cooking and then at their cottage, Shorehaven, on Lake Erie during the more relaxing spring and summer seasons watching blazing sunsets and dining al fresco.
Friends and family always were welcome to “come on in,” sit, talk, laugh and eat.
Her life was a celebration.
Home is the place that when you go there they have to let you in, Pam and John welcomed all. Whether at Erie or the cottage, Pam, John, their children, Patrick Chrzanowski, wife, Denise, and Laurie Uhlir, significant other, Mike Lanci, and six grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Danielle and Amanda Chrzanowski, and Garrett and Daphne Uhlir celebrated their family with long held traditions like the Polish Wigelia on Christmas Eve and Lobster Fest parties at the cottage.
Every Saturday night was a date night to explore and prepare new recipes with music, wine, and ice cold beer. She loved a few Bud Lights, listening to Abba’s “Dancing Queen'' and often would grab your hand to spontaneously dance in the kitchen or sunroom. Their homes reflected her love of interior design and her flower gardens showcased her passion to fill their landscapes with blooming colors.
She and John met at East High School, became sweethearts and attended prom. They knew even then their love would last a lifetime.
Pam supported John during his tour in Vietnam with long written love letters across foreign borders. He sent his military checks back home to pay for their upcoming wedding, which happened on Easter Monday, April 15, 1968.
Pam finished her schooling as a Radiology technician with a two-year degree at Hamot Hospital and later Metro Health Medical Center, where she led the CATscan department in its inception under the guidance of Dr. Gallagher and Dr. Zurbonia, and then advanced to provide mammography and ultrasound. Her patients often remarked about her kind and beautiful eyes. She evoked love through simple acts of kindness. Pam lived a life so as to be missed.
Pam’s love for her family began with the example of love that her parents, Martin and Sally Pomorski provided for her and her siblings, Larry Pomorski (Camille), David Pomorski (deceased), Patricia Benison (Frank) and dear Uncle Eddie Jares (deceased).
Pam often imitated the weekday dinners of her childhood for her family with a roast chicken in the oven on afternoons when Polka music would stream though the windows. A “Polish girl from home”, Pam held strong to her Polish nationality and traditions and passed those long held family beliefs and pride on to her children and grandchildren.
She loved home, but also loved to travel. She and John explored through several tropical islands, New York City, England, Scotland and on cruises, but most enjoyed the trip they shared with 18 cousins and spouses to Poland in 2018. Through the Polish salt mines and exploring our cultural history, mom’s pierogi, sausage and horseradish recipes just got better and better for Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday.
She loved us all - adventures on the rails with her sister Patricia in Colorado, navigating the seas in a small sailboat in the bay of San Diego, with her daughter-in-law, Denise, changing diapers of her grandkids, buying riding boots for first shows in the arena, and steaming lobsters in the pot on Saturday nights with the Beatles playing lightly behind.
Her love is forever etched in our hearts and on our shoreline.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hetty Carraway and Dr. John Molina of the Cleveland Clinic Leukemia Unit, Dr. Jan Rothman of UPMC Hamot, and the staff of the Hillman Cancer Center.
Family and friends will be received at the Kloecker-Bailey Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 4396 Iroquois Ave, Erie, Pa 16511 on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 3-7p.m. Friends are also invited to the funeral home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 for the prayer service at 9:45am followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, 2635 Buffalo Road, Erie, Pa 16510. Burial will be private.
