Departed: 04/11/2022 (Cisco)
Obituary Preview: Gilbert Q. Garces, a longtime Eastland resident, passed away on Monday, April 11th, 2022.
He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.  Gilbert was born on September 10th, 1932 in Kennedy, Texas.  His early years were spent in San Antonio and Kerrville, Texas.  He then moved to West Texas as a teen, working in the oilfield.  Moving to Eastland, he then met the love of his life, Mary Rose Torres, married and celebrated marriage for the next 65 years.
Living in Cisco during the early years, they moved to Eastland in 1969 where he owned/operated Gilbert’s Gulf on Main Street.  Later, he opened his service station in Cisco, known as “Gilbert’s.”  He led an very active civic life in the community, being a member of the Lion’s Club, Booster Club and the Knights of Columbus.  Taking care of his customers was his greatest priority and joy.  Great customer service was a necessity and nothing less would be expected.  His laugh was contagious and the jokes never ran dry to anyone who loved his humor.  His “stories” will live in infamy.  His family was always his number one priority and loved being a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cisco.  His hobbies were watching and cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, where he took his family to many games during the early glory years.  But his favorite hobby was being with his family, watching “all” his kids growing up.  His presence, smile and laugh will be greatly missed.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his father, Eliceo Sr., mother Evarista, sisters Dominga, Genoveva, Petra, Julia and Juanita.  Brothers Eliceo, Pedro, Amado, Santos and Gilfredo.  Granddaughter Bethlanda Newton.
Survivors include his sister, Alma Moreno. Wife, Mary Rose Torres Garces.  Daughter, Sylvia and husband David Newton;  Son, Leonard and wife Stacy Garces.  Grandchildren, Jessica and Jeremy Newton, Yolanda Newton, Tyler Garces, Chloe and Tanner Garces and Tate Garces.  Great-granddaughter Kensley Newton.  He was excited to see his future great-grandchildren from Chloe/Tanner and Jessica/Jeremy.  They will have to learn of their loving and caring “Tito” from the rest of us.  He also enjoyed the numerous nephews and nieces that gave his life such tremendous meaning.
Eastland County truly lost a heart-filled man with joy that could light up any room.  The stories will continue for years.
A Rosary will be held on Wednesday, April 13th in Cisco at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  Mass will continue at 12:00.  Following burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco, a luncheon will be held at the Parish Hall, Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Pallbearers are Jeremy Newton, Yolanda Newton, Tyler Garces, Tanner Garces and Tate Garces.

Departed: 02/02/2022 (Cisco)
Obituary Preview: Mildred “Berniece” Hunt was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who passed away in Granbury, TX on February 2, 2022. She was born in Gorman, Texas, to Ray and Hope Kinser on October 10, 1933. After graduating from Gorman High School in Eastland County, Texas in 1952, she pursued farming and ranching with her family. Berniece soon met her would-be-husband, Donald “Max” Hunt, whose family were neighboring farmers. Berniece and Max continued to see one another from a distance while he was in the Army, and they were married on February 28, 1954. Her and Max bought a farm near family outside of Cisco, Texas, where she loved to spend time outdoors. They eventually moved to Odessa, Texas, where they had two sons, Shane and Zachary. On December 9, 1976, her husband, Max, passed away after a long battle with cancer.
After Max’s passing, Berniece moved her family back to the farm in Cisco, where she enjoyed raising her sons near her parents and extended family. The Hunts flourished in their life in Cisco, often coming together with cousins to play bluegrass and folk music, fish and hunt, play gin rummy, and enjoy homemade ice cream. Berniece was a wonderful mother to her boys, teaching them about the colorful life of the farm and its lessons. She always made time for fun and stressed the importance of a spiritual life.
Berniece loved being outside and was a master gardener, always having a beautiful yard and blooming plants that she held deep pride in. She loved to travel and explore, with a fascination for distant places and a love for road trips to the “Hill Country” (her favorite place in Texas). Like her mother, Berniece had an incredible memory, with an ability to recall vivid details that brought life to her stories. She also had a notable sense of humor with a certain flair for the mischievous, known for her infamous pranks on family and friends. She had several occupations that included banking, education, and farming.
She was very close to her younger sister, Margaret Starr, and younger brother, Gene Kinser, whom she spent much time with. As a grandmother (“Grandma BC” and “Grandma BB”), she cherished her time with her four grandchildren, Logan, Bronwyn, Colton, and Tori Hunt; attending their activities and introducing them to antiquing and rock and arrowhead hunting—while passing down her love for classic films (far past bedtime). She dearly loved her large extended family that included many brothers and sisters-in law; aunts and uncles; cousins; and nieces and nephews, and she loved to plan family gatherings and reunions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact the newspaper's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their submission process and any specific requirements they may have.

Can I write my own obituary?

What if I'm struggling to find the right words for an obituary?

If you're having trouble finding the right words, consider seeking help from a friend, family member, or professional writer. You might also look at examples of other obituaries for inspiration.

Can I update an online obituary over time?

Sometimes! Depending on the online platform or website hosting the obituary, you may be able to update it with new information or photos over time. Be sure to check their policies before publishing.
