Thao Ellis - April 14, 1950 - October 17, 2022

Departed: 10/17/2022 (Killeen)
Obituary Preview: Homemaker and gardener, Thao Ellis loved nature and all its spenders. She loved life and wanted more time with her family. Thao passed away on October 17, 2022 at the age of 72 after a long-fought battle with cancer and other complications. She passed away knowing her kids love her and with her oldest daughter at her side.
Thao came to America at a young age with limited understanding of its language, let alone its culture. This was not including being newly married with two young kids to support and raise. Thao persevered through this thing we call life and made a place for her family to grow and prosper.
Thao was an amazing chief of Asian or as she would correct me “Vietnams” cuisine. She loved to try new recipes and was never afraid to add her own twist to it. Thao loved gardening and growing her produce using the knowledge and experience carried down from her family. Thao’s ambition never wavered when it came to being self-reliant as she expanded into raising small farm animals. I am sure Thao is up there right now arguing with our lord that she can make a better garden.
Funeral Services will be held on October 30, 2022 scheduled for 10:00 AM at Killeen Memorial Park and Cemetery 3516 Lake Rd. Killeen, TX.

Pat Harvey Kern - December 07, 1936 - October 12, 2022

Departed: 10/12/2022 (Killeen)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness and much love that the family of Pat Harvey Kern announces and mourns his passing on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the age of 85.
Mr. Kern died quietly and peacefully at a facility in Temple, Texas where he was receiving treatment. Pat was born December 7, 1936, in the small Texas panhandle town of Wellington to Harley and Ruth Arlo Kern. He was the youngest of four, with two elder sisters, Ardis and Adelle, and an older brother, Jim. His family eventually moved to Temple, Texas so their father could be closer to his profitable hog farm. Harker Heights, Texas now encompasses this farm and is named in honor of its founder, Harley Kern.
The family moved to Killeen during his 9th-grade year where he attended Killeen High School. Pat became known for his athletic abilities and very large stature, making him easy to spot on the football field. As captain of his team his senior year, he and his teammates along with their coaches were honored to participate in the 1954 state playoffs. Although it wasn’t a win for the team that year, the Kangaroo football team of 1991, “settled the score for '54.” This win for the Roos was a huge source of pride for Pat. While in high school, he also met the love of his life, Bonnie Mierzwik. After they graduated in 1955, they were married a year later at the First Baptist Church of Killeen. They were married almost 59 years before Bonnie’s death in 2015.
Mr. Kern could have pursued a college football career and played for either Baylor or Texas A&M University, but Pat had a vision, even as a young man, for the land his family owned. He became a land developer and an entrepreneur and is considered a founding father of Harker Heights, Texas.
Pat’s greatest passions were the outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed sharing these activities with his family and friends. Pat and Bonnie were known for getting away to their cabin in Colorado for trips of solitude, fishing, and hunting. But their greatest joy was sharing that cabin with family and friends where many precious memories were made.
Pat is preceded in death by his loving wife, Bonnie Kern, a daughter, Sheri Arti Kern, his parents, Harley and Ruth Arlo Kern, and his two sisters and brother, Ardis, Adelle, and Jim.
Left with loving memories are his 2 children, daughter Stacie Dishon, husband George, son Patrick Kern and wife Krista, grandchildren, Jacqueline Sulak, husband Cody, Alex Dishon, wife Annette, Chase Kern, wife Erin, and Ty Kern. Two great-grandsons, Rhett Sulak and Thomas Kern. Sister-in-law, companion, and confidante after our mother's passing, Barbara Clore, and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
A life celebration will be held on Friday, October 21 at 11 am at Crawford and Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Family visitation will also be held on Thursday, October 20 from 5-7 pm at Crawford and Bowers in Killeen.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Hambone, Mr. Yacka, Daddy and Grandpa’’, Milton began a post military life in Killeen, Texas on Jefferies Avenue as an entrepreneur opening a store, Carroll’s TV Rentals and Repairs. Later he started a successful construction business and built a house on Love Road, the perfect spot for his ever-growing family to visit and his grandkids to come and play. Milton and Jewel attended Anderson Chapel A.M.E Church and Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas. The two served faithfully as choir members and ushers.
2006 found Milton and Jewel relocating to Waco, Texas to live amongst their daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. There the family took care of Jewel until her passing in 2011. Milton and Jewel were lovingly united in marriage for 56 years.
Milton ultimately found his way back to Caldwell to live out his days peacefully and happy on “the hill”. His daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other relatives gathered in Caldwell often to eat, laugh and create lifelong memories. It was here Milton resided until his passing, May 29th, the same day as his beloved Jewel 11 years earlier.
Milton is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Ophelia Carroll, wife Jewel Carroll, son Roy Carroll, great-grand daughter Journee Griggs, four brothers Richard Dell Carroll, James Earl Carroll Sr., Lee Marion Carroll, Malvin Carroll and four sisters Jerline Robinson, Gladys Manuel, Ruthie Mae Rivers, and Edna Wright.
Milton is survived by his daughters Pearl Tyrone, Gwen Jackson, Jackie Gaines, Janice Carroll, 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, three sisters Rubye Middleton, Dorothy Spencer, Teresa Sims and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The Carroll family would especially like to thank Leon Chisolm and Chisolm’s Family Funeral Home for lovingly taking care of our family during this time.
