Ray Stanley - March 17, 1938 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Tullahoma)
Obituary Preview: Ray Stanley, of Tullahoma, Tennessee crossed over to his eternal reward on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024. Ray passed away peacefully, of natural causes, in the presence of his wife and children. Born in Miracle, Kentucky on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1938, to the Reverend Beckham Stanley and Eva Moses Stanley, Ray was an excellent athlete and student, and demonstrated a remarkable work ethic from an early age. Upon graduation from Bell County High School, he joined the United States Air Force and began a highly successful professional career. Within a year of joining the Air Force, Mr. Stanley proposed to his wife of sixty-six years, Mrs. Ernestine (formerly Wilson) Stanley, and they began their life together. Their life was an absolute adventure, that combined their love of family, joy for travel, quest for knowledge, steadfast integrity, loyalty to University of Kentucky Athletics and St. Louis Cardinal Baseball, and service to their church and community. After four years of active-duty service, Mr. Stanley took advantage of his military training in electronics and accepted a job with General Dynamics Corporation, in Fort Worth, Texas. His eldest child, Barbara Stanley (Whitaker) was born in Fort Worth, and the young family began to grow. He soon learned of another career opportunity in Tullahoma, Tennessee with Arnold Engineering Development Corporation (AEDC). He took this job in 1962, and soon after the family moved to Tullahoma, where his next daughter, Susan Stanley, was born, and shortly after that, his third child, David Stanley, was born. Ray spent the remainder of his long and distinguished professional career in the Rocket Division of AEDC, adding to what would eventually culminate as nearly 40 years of total service to his nation. During this timeframe and the years that followed, he was an active member of the Tullahoma First Baptist Church, and excelled as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Friends and family will long remember being invited to enter the Stanley household, by Ray’s booming voice and familiar and inviting refrain “Come in this house!” Every member of his family will always recall his smiling face and his sincere desire to contribute to their lives, education, and joy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and was admired and adored by every person in his life, especially his children and grandchildren. He worked hard to be present in their lives and they will always carry him in their hearts. Most importantly, he and Ernestine, set the example for their children, by investing their time and love in their grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s lives. Their children learned how to love and invest their love from Ray. His leadership, in this very important regard, will pass through the many happy generations to come. An extremely well-traveled man, Ray took great pride in knowing he had spent time in all 50 states and 35 foreign nations. He spent additional time reading and learning about the places he had visited and those places he hoped to visit. He was fond of explaining to his grandchildren and great grandchildren that “a person who has not traveled remains on the first page of life, by his own decision.” He was a generous and Godly man who was slow to anger and fast to laugh. He made friends easily and retained them for life. Those who knew him recall a sweet, kind soul who they admired and loved to be around. Every child, in-law, grandchild, and great grandchild will forever recall a man who would drop what he was doing to come to their rescue, help solve a problem, or simply look them in the eye and really talk to them. He took the time and made the effort to be in the moment for those fortunate to be in his life. Ray Stanley understood the importance of serving as a role model in this regard for his family and friends and they are all better because of his extraordinary example. He was a very special man, indeed. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Stanley, and three children, Barbara Whitaker (Richard), Susan Stanley, and David Stanley (Lisa). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kimberlyn, Lauren, Sophie, Ava, Jackson, and Beckham. Finally, he is survived by six great grandchildren, Kensley, Lily, Amelia, Connor, Chase, and Easton. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024 at Kilgore Funeral Home from 12:00-2:00pm with the funeral service to immediately follow at 2:00pm with Bro. Andy Stallings officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Hope Lodge, 2008 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37246. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kilgore Funeral Home.

Dr. Jerry Ledford Kennedy - January 11, 1942 - February 03, 2024

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Tullahoma)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Jerry L. Kennedy at the age of 82 passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 3, 2024. He was born on January 11, 1942 in Knoxville, TN to parents Helen Crosby and Ausbie Ledford Kennedy. He was the second of three children (Brother Charles Kennedy, MD, deceased, and surviving sister Nancy Thomas of Winter Haven, Florida). As Jerry grew up, he was quickly identified as a creative thinker, a dedicated caregiver, a man of action, a devoted family man, and a loving, faithful servant of God. He will long be remembered by his family, his friends, and his community for his generous spirit and his loving compassion. He devoted his life to making the world a warmer, happier place.
He attended University of Tennessee and graduated the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1966. He completed his residency at Chattanooga’s Baroness Erlanger Hospital in General Surgery from 1966-1971, serving as Chief Resident of surgery. During that time, he met and married his sweetheart, Elizabeth Solomon, in 1969. Immediately after leaving Erlanger he joined the Air Force and served his active duty at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas. While there, he was appointed Deputy Commander of Professional Services, and Chief of Surgical Services. He earned his promotion to Major before leaving McConnell. He was proud to wear his Veteran’s hat and eager to talk to other service people about their military experiences. Upon completion of his military term, he and Liz moved to Tullahoma where he started his medical practice.
As a caregiver, Jerry was a dedicated physician and surgeon. He came to Harton Hospital as the first Board Certified Surgeon and proud Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was blessed to practice surgery for 48 years, 40 of which were in Tullahoma. For many years he served as Chief of Staff at Harton Regional Medical Center, now known as Vanderbilt Medical Center. He also served on the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Alumni Council. He also served the military as the clinic doctor on the AEDC Air Force Base for 18 years. Known for his caring bedside manner to his patients throughout the years, earning their tremendous loyalty as an expert diagnostician and a highly skilled surgeon, known for his steady hands and sensitive, caring bedside manner. He often went way beyond appointment times as he carefully listened and integrated whole person care and attention to detail. He retired on December 13, 2013—hanging up his professional shingle to begin another active phase of life.
As a man of action, Jerry donated many hours to his volunteer work—always offering a hand out to help and a hand up for those in need. He was a 30-plus-year member of Tullahoma Rotary Club, he was closely associated with Motlow State College for decades, and he served on the UTSI Advisory Board for dozens of years. He was a builder and engineer at heart, adding construction jobs and doing repair projects at home. He loved to “Jerry-rig” things and took great pride in his economical problem-solving skills.
As a devoted family man, Jerry had tremendous energy to laugh, play, pull pranks, and carry out practical jokes. He loved Halloween and always looked forward to handing out treats (especially when he found a good deal on candy!). He celebrated Christmas like a true Santa Claus, with bulging pockets and sweet surprises. Likewise, Easter and Derby Day were occasions for big celebrations. He loved to water ski and fish off his boat and went on numerous fishing trips with his buddies. He was full of wanderlust and eagerly jumped at the opportunity for a trip, whether to his favorite city of Chicago, the beach, the mountains, or halfway around the world to countries throughout Europe and later, Israel and Egypt. Perhaps his greatest love was becoming a full-time Grandad. He looked forward to driving his Grands to all their lessons, recitals, and especially to picking them up from school when he got the excited first hand re-telling of their day. He loved to go to musicals, theater, and plays. Jerry was always ready for fun and knew how to create good times and great memories.
As a man of God, Jerry practiced his faith daily. He was a member of First Christian Church of Tullahoma for more than 50 years. When away, he made sure to check out the local churches and seldom missed attending services, regardless of where he traveled. Jerry served in a number of church positions throughout the years, especially offering his wisdom and guidance as a Deacon and an Elder. He loved singing in the church choir, and the Sonshine Singers; his full baritone added richness and depth to many cantatas and special choir performances. Jerry will be sadly missed by his survivors: wife Elizabeth, children Karen Kennedy of Queens, New York, and Dr. Clark Kennedy (wife Dena), and Kelly Kennedy, granddaughters Catelyn Kennedy, Evalee Kennedy and Zoey Kennedy, all of Chattanooga, sister Nancy, and several nieces and nephews. His beloved dog Bea will greatly miss her walks and long car rides with her gentle master.
The world truly lost a great man with Jerry’s death. He seldom met a stranger, and that person never remained a stranger for very long because he reached out and touched his new acquaintances. Jerry left them grateful to have made a new friend whose hearty laugh, twinkling blue Irish eyes, had warmed their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 10:00am-12:00pm at First Christian Church with a memorial service to immediately follow at 12:00pm with Rev. Tom Murdock officiating.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about their funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, while also providing a sense of closure and allowing people to pay their respects. They also provide a historical record of a person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Some may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary, while others may require you to contact them directly by phone or in person.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of a person's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it as well.

What if I need to make changes to an obituary after it's been published?
