Joseph W. Fitzgerald - November 28, 1944 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (West Roxbury)
Obituary Preview: Joe Fitzgerald of Norwood, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old. Joe was the devoted husband of the late Carol (Dawson) Fitzgerald. Loving father of Mike Fitzgerald and his wife Kerri of Foxboro, Kate Kelley and her husband Colin of Norwood and Tim Fitzgerald of Norwood. He was the loving and treasured Grampa of Xavier, Elaina and Keira Kelley, and Cameron and Skylar Fitzgerald. Loving son of the late Joseph and Virginia Fitzgerald. Dear brother of Bob Fitzgerald and his wife Tina of Norwood and Dee Fitzgerald of Westwood. Dear brother-in-law of Diane and Jerry Collins of Elmira, NY and the late John Dawson. Dear uncle of Kara and Ted Fannon, Ryan Fitzgerald, Brent and Lauren Fitzgerald, Stephanie and Dan Bronk and Tracy and Chris Vaughn, as well as many great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many cherished, lifelong friends.
Joe grew up in Roxbury and graduated from Christian High School in 1962. He went on to attend Mass Maritime Academy before pursuing his dream of becoming a writer. Joe interviewed at many newspapers before starting a job in St. Johnsbury, VT where he would meet his beautiful wife, Carol.
After marrying in 1966, they moved back to West Roxbury before ultimately settling in Norwood, where they built a life together. They loved spending time as a family and enjoying summers camping at Hermit Island, swimming in Mousam Lake, and taking yearly trips to Bermuda. Joe and Carol were married for forty-six years before her passing in 2012.
Joe would always say one his greatest blessings in life was being “Grampa” and “Poppa” to his five beautiful grandchildren. He loved watching them play and getting to spend time with them. They brought him immense joy, especially after Carol’s passing.
Joe was a columnist at the Boston Herald for four decades and was passionate about his writing. What he enjoyed most were the people he met throughout his career, many of whom became lifelong friends. Joe also wrote six books throughout his career and was co-host of the show Sports Beat on channel 38 in Boston. He was a wonderful storyteller and never forgot a name or detail.
One of the most important parts of Joe’s life was his deep devotion to his faith. Some of his greatest memories were of his days at Christian High, Dudley Street Church, and nights spent at Singspiration. Joe and Carol both had a love for Southern gospel music and together they created the nonprofit, Meetinghouse Concerts. They looked forward to their trips each year to the National Quartet conventions in Kentucky.
While Joe was most often known for what he did professionally, the people that knew him best knew that the three things most important to him were his family, his friends, and his faith. Joe would always say that he was blessed beyond measure.
Joe’s family would like to thank KP Poku, the staff at the Thomas Upham House, the staff at Traditions of Dedham and Gentiva Hospice for the love, kindness, and compassion you showed Joe. They are incredibly grateful for all the support you gave to Joe and his family over the last two years.
Joe’s Funeral Service will be from the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home 1248 Washington St. NORWOOD, Friday March 15 at 9 a.m. Funeral Service at United Church of Norwood at 10 a.m. Visiting Hours Thursday March 14, 2024 from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Kathleen Marie McNeal - October 27, 1944 - February 15, 2024

Departed: 02/15/2024 (West Roxbury)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen Marie (Turner) McNeal, age 79, passed away on February 15th. She is survived by her loving son, William David Jr., his wife Tracy, granddaughters Margaret, Eleanor, and Phoebe McNeal of Brookline, Massachusetts, her sister and brother-in-law, Marianne (Maggie) and Bill Murdock of Bozeman, Montana and their family. She is predeceased by her husbands William David Sr., and John Nolte, PhD.
Kathy was born to Henry and Anna Marie (Bertram) Turner in northern New Jersey where she grew up. She graduated from Fairlawn High School in 1962, where she excelled in cheerleading and socializing. She attended Tufts University where she majored in physical education. Kathy loved Boston, Massachusetts, from buying produce at Haymarket Station to watching Bobby Orr fly down the ice at the Boston Garden, to a chance sighting of JFK at a Harvard football game. She stayed in the area after graduating to teach at Marblehead High School for several years while also coaching the women’s tennis team. She had a tremendous sense of adventure which can best be summarized by the following: on Friday afternoons in the winter she would pack up her two door Triumph convertible and drive over 6 hours to northern Vermont where she was one of the only women on the ski patrol at Jay Peak. It was on the ski slopes that she would meet her future husband, William (Bill) McNeal.
Kathy obtained her masters degree in education from Salem State University. She married and relocated to upstate NY where she had a son, William David Jr. She briefly taught at Schenectady Community College, stayed home full time for Will’s early formative years, and was a substitute teacher in Queensbury, New York and the neighboring districts, for 15 years.
Kathy lived in Queensbury for over forty years. She made lifelong friends in her community, through volunteering and substitute teaching in Queensbury Schools, the Adirondack Youth Hockey Association, and Our Lady of the Annunciation parish. Although Kathy’s parents retired to their birthplace of New Orleans, and her only sibling Marianne (Murdock) moved to Bozeman, MT, this created ample opportunity for family vacations crisscrossing the country. Each summer under the dubious eye of their mother, Kathy and Marianne would pack their respective children into planes, trains, and automobiles (aka minivans) in pursuit of a new destination, from Disney World to the Canadien Rockies, and many places in between. These trips were epic in not only their scope, but also the number of memories they created for each family.
Years after Bill passed away suddenly, Kathy found a second chance at love when she reconnected with John (Jack) Nolte, whom she had previously dated decades earlier while living in Boston. Jack and Kathy enjoyed over 10 years together, marrying in 2007 and dividing their time between Tucson, AZ, where he taught at the University of Arizona, and Queensbury. In a span of four years Kathy welcomed her three granddaughters, who would subsequently give her lots of material with which to brag to her friends about. Jack predeceased Kathy in 2014, yet she continued being a snowbird for years to come. In addition to loving all things active, from skiing to tennis to jogging to rollerblading, Kathy loved animals, specifically dogs. This love was manifested in her volunteerism with the Tucson SPCA. Those who knew her will remember Kathy most for her seemingly endless energy and inexhaustible gift of gab. She was always the life of the party, lit up a room wherever she went, and will truly be missed.
Kathy's Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church located at 5 Linden Place in Brookline, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  A celebration of Kathy's life will be held this summer on Lake George in New York.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy’s memory can be made to your local SPCA chapter, or the charity of your choice.

Mary T. Ayoub - December 23, 1922 - February 11, 2024

Departed: 02/11/2024 (West Roxbury)
Obituary Preview: Mary was born during a snowstorm on December 23, 1922.  She was 3  1/2 pounds.  The story goes like this:  her grandmother (who lived to be 100) was cooking Irish bread.  The doctor arrived, removed the bread, lined the oven with bricks, rubbed olive oil on Mary and put her in.  She had to fight to live, and that fight remained with her entire life.
Mary married George in May of 1948 and moved into their home in Cambridge where she would spend the rest of her life.  She had seven children.  She lost George suddenly in 1994.
Mary was loving and caring and always the first to send a get-well, sympathy card, or make that call.  She was strong, tenacious, organized, creative and a feisty woman.  She hated change and her determination to stick with whatever she was involved with was legendary.  She had a great sense of humor.  She always told us her memory was better than ours, and she was right.
She lived her life how she wanted to live it. She was an avid reader up until a week before she passed.  She loved to knit, sew, and taught herself to crochet.  She could walk for miles and loved it.  Our dad would walk with her sometimes but did not enjoy it. They had a very rich and deep love for each other.
We wish to thank Peace of Mind caretakers and Good Shepherd Hospice for their close relationship and care for our mom.  She formed special bonds with some of them.
Mary was the dear and devoted wife of the late George Ayoub; beloved mother of Camille Joel of South Dennis and her late husband Karl, Ronald Ayoub of Cambridge, Nancy Ayoub of Cambridge, Karen Ayoub and her partner Bob Ross of Medford, Richard Ayoub and his wife Kathleen Ryan of Groton, Douglas Ayoub of Cambridge and his late wife Nanci Malone, and Eric Ayoub of Malden.  Mary was the dear "Nana" of 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  Loving sister of the late Thomas Messina.

He was Born in Charlestown in 1946 as the oldest of 2 children, spending his youth playing on the streets of South Boston and Forest Hills and eventually raising his children in Medfield, a community he cherished for the rest of his life. But he felt most at home when he was by the ocean. He spent his early and late life summers in Old Orchard Beach and Ocean Park, Maine and loved spending time at his Cape house in Orleans.
Jim was a proud alumnus of Boston College High School (‘63), Boston College (‘68), and Suffolk Law School ('76). He dedicated his professional life as a court-appointed attorney, primarily representing children and providing protection to the most vulnerable in our court system.
Jim was not only a distinguished lawyer but could also be described as a “renaissance man” with a passion for history, music and the arts. He was a longtime member of the Neponset Choral Society and a self-taught art collector with a keen eye for talent and a special appreciation for impressionism and New England artists. His weekends often found him exploring antique shops and flea markets, on the hunt for hidden treasures, be it a unique and captivating painting or a vintage set of golf clubs. He delighted in gifting these discoveries to his family and friends.
Many know Jim as an avid sports enthusiast. He was a loyal fan of all his Boston sports teams, a long time runner (and proud finisher of many Boston Marathons), passionate golfer, and dedicated handball player, often spending many Saturdays at the West Roxbury YMCA. His love for sports extended beyond his personal enjoyment, as he generously shared his passion by founding and then coaching the Mount Alvernia girls golf team for over two decades – one of the most treasured highlights of his life.
Jim is survived by his loving partner, Nancy Burke, and his devoted children, Brendan Lyons and Emily Lyons Peet. He was a cherished father-in-law to Cari Lyons and Ryan Peet and a proud and loving grandfather to Jack, Tripp, Lucy, and Parker Lyons. Jim is survived by his brother, Kevin Lyons and his wife, Claudia Lyons. He is preceded by his mother, Kathleen Lyons and father, James Lyons Sr.
Jim Lyons leaves behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and generosity that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of being in his presence. He was especially known for going out of his way to help others in need. In Jim’s name, we kindly invite you to make a donation to "First Tee" at www.massgolf.org, or carry out a random act of kindness, just as he lived his life. A celebration of life will be held at “West on Centre” in West Roxbury, from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm on January 6, 2024; an informal, come-and-go event.

Kathleen Smith Locke - October 25, 1929 - December 02, 2023

Departed: 12/02/2023 (West Roxbury)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen Smith Locke, 94, passed away peacefully in Boston on December 2, 2023.
Born October 25, 1929, in Burlington, VT, to Stephen and Gladys (Pariseau Denton) Smith. Always a woman ahead of her time, Kathleen graduated from Burlington High School at age 16. She went on to earn her BA in zoology from the University of Vermont. After graduation she taught in the Chemistry Department at UVM and took graduate courses. For several years she taught high school sciences and math. She became technical librarian for the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, NY where she found her lifelong friends, the late Dr. Jay Moses and Irma Smith Moses, and married her husband, Joseph K. Locke. They had two daughters and after a pause, a son.
At the time of her son’s birth in 1972, amniocentesis was still experimental. Kathleen, always fascinated by advances in science, volunteered to be in a group of 14 pioneers chosen to participate. Her friends were unconvinced that a medical process could predict her child’s sex, but Kathleen proved them wrong.
Kathleen went on to earn her MS in biochemistry at UMass Boston. After her divorce she moved to Chicago and spent 14 years as a contract research manager in environmental air quality for the Gas Research Institute.
Kathleen’s greatest love was classical music, and she played her piano to the end. Her retirement years were filled with visits to the symphony, the opera and the Museum of Fine Arts. A voracious and eclectic reader, she maintained a keen interest in current events. Kathleen loved sewing, knitting and baking, traits shared with her daughter Alicia. She adored traveling, especially with her daughter Amy who will fondly remember their jaunts. Her son Stephen will miss the simple pleasures of binge-watching “Breaking Bad” with her. Kathleen wrote to her BHS classmates upon their 50th reunion:  “My life, like yours, has had its challenges and its rewards. I feel as young as ever until that moment when I look at a reflection in the store window and with sudden startling revelation realize that the familiar-looking old lady staring back is me! Then I am aware of the passing years.”
Kathleen is survived by her children, Alicia L. Lorenzo of Duxbury, VT, Amy S. Locke and Stephen Locke, both of Boston. The family deeply thanks John Nehme for being a caring second son.
Kathleen will be interred at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington in a private ceremony.
