Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or charitable organizations they were involved with.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, funeral home websites, and social media platforms. They may also be shared through email or printed copies distributed at funeral services or memorial gatherings.

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some online sites offer free listings, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or additional features such as photos or videos.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This allows them to have control over how they want to be remembered and can also serve as a therapeutic exercise.

What if I don't know all the details about the deceased?

If you're tasked with writing an obituary but lack certain information about the deceased, don't worry. You can still create a meaningful tribute by focusing on what you do know and sharing your personal memories and anecdotes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines and deadlines.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance on what to include, consider reaching out to a funeral home or mortuary for assistance. They often have experience with writing obituaries and can provide valuable support.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can post a link to the online obituary or share a brief summary along with a photo.

How long are online obituaries typically available?

The duration that online obituaries remain available varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep them active for months or even years, while others may remove them after a certain period.
