Obituary Preview: Frank J. Shusta, age 92, of Ely passed away to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus on Saturday March 26, 2022 at Boundary Waters Care in Ely.
He was born October 10, 1929, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Felix and Helen (Kowalsik) Shusta.
Frank served in the Navy after his high school graduation. He married Shirley Parks of Chisholm on June 2, 1951.
Frank worked for Chevrolet dealerships on the range until deciding to enter the insurance business as his long term career in 1965, shortly after, owning his own agency until retiring in 1995.
Frank was a member of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. His love of collecting antique cars and parts from all over showed in the cars he did get restored to enjoy driving and displaying at car shows. Frank was a long term member in many national, state and local antique car clubs.
Frank always had time to interact with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with family functions and events. He will be sorely missed by many but had taught some to follow in his footsteps.
Frank is survived by his wife Shirley, children Ron Shusta, of Duluth, MN; Tom (Bessie) Shusta, of Ramsey,  MN; Mick (Patty) Shusta, of Ely, MN; Jan (Lee) Shusta, of Blaine, MN: Greg (Karen) Shusta, of Otsego, MN; Val Brandt, of Lutsen, MN; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Siblings, Florence Sipsas, Ted (Diane) Shusta and Patricia (Butch) Ketchmark.

Obituary Preview: Tom Julian January 23, 1939 - March 11, 2022
Tom Julian, 83, of Babbitt passed away peacefully at home with loved ones by his side after a long and valiant fight with cancer.
Tom was born on January 23, 1939 to Eva (Northcutt) and Stanley Jones in St. Louis Missouri, where he grew up. He met his wife Kathy (Constant) while they were both living and working in Denver. He had a love of art, especially Native American art. He also designed and made many southwest style pieces of jewelry. He and Kathy owned and operated the Original Trading Post in Santa Fe, New Mexico for many years and after selling it, he then acted as a consultant & researcher between numerous Indian tribes and financial backers in the building of multiple casinos. He was a voracious reader - reading over old and current Indian treaties and was well versed in what they stated. He had a keen eye and mind for being able to read and interpret Indian laws and treaties. Many attorneys, as well as Indian tribes consulted with him on the legal findings. He helped many tribes with the legalities as well as the fine details of building the casinos and generating much needed income for them. It was also a passion of Tom’s to help reunite tribes with their ancestral artifacts that were held in museums or private collections. His love of what he was doing kept him working until 2020 when his health issues finally forced him to slow down.
Tom is survived by his wife of 46 years Kathy, sons Tommy (Vali) and Danny (Jennifer), brother Mike (Susan); sisters: MaryAnn (Tom) Foley; Barb (Gerry) Liebmann and Linda (Paul) Mataya,and sister-in-law Mary.
Sister-in-law Chris (Donny) Olson, brother-in-laws Denny (Phyllis) Constant and Paul Constant and sister-in-law Becky Constant; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Stan Jones, his brothers Bob and Jim; his daughter Patty Quintana; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Willard and Juanita Constant and brother-in-law Bill Constant, niece Billie Gayle and nephew Jayce.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Plus X Catholic Church in Babbitt at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one half hour prior to the service at the church on Friday, March 25, 2022. Inurnment and a celebration of his life will be held early summer.

Obituary Preview: (Laveta)  Anne Swenson, age 85, known as Anne, died at Virginia Regional Medical Center in Virginia, Minnesota on March 2, 2022.
She was born on March 27, 1936 in Blue Island, Illinois to Golda (Standard) and Eugene M. Swenson of Hazel Crest, IL.
Anne was the mother of two children: Nicholas and Sandra Anne. Anne Swenson was the publisher of the Ely Echo weekly newspaper from 1977 to 2021. She had also been employed as a waitress, payroll clerk, retail clerk, camp counselor, crafts instructor, book buyer, record buyer, assistant store manager, writer and columnist. Her column in the Echo was known as “From the miscellaneous drawer.”
During her lifetime she resided in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, California and Rome, Italy. She found her true home in Ely, Minnesota.
She attended classes in a variety of colleges including American Conservatory of Music (Chicago), Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, IA), University of Iowa, (Iowa City) University of California (Berkely), University of Minnesota (Duluth) and Roosevelt University (Chicago). She was married for two years to Iowan Douglas Hieber and 32 years to Warren Wognum.
She was a Girl Scout troop leader in Rome, Italy and Champaign, IL. She was a past president of an Illinois cooperative nursery school, past chairman of Winton Sawmill Days, Ely Design Review Commission, Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust and Ely Greenstone Public Arts Committee, served on the boards of: Vermilion Bicentennial Committee, Ely Chamber of Commerce, Northern Lakes Arts Association and Voyageur Winter Festival. She was a strong supporter of the World Press Institute through its visits to Ely. She co-authored the Winton Historical Booklet and was the editor of the book “Ely, Since 1888.”
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law Judith (Swenson) Figlio, and Lisa Swenson, and nephew Greg Pernia.
She is survived by her son Nick (Mary) Wognum and their children,  Megan, Evan (Nella); Jacob (Kyah) and Nick’s grandchild Kinlee.
She is also survived by daughter Sandra Wognum of Denver and her adopted sons John, Marquay, Tyson and Stephan; and missed by Anne’s special nieces Susan Baer Pernia and her children April and Cameron of San Diego, CA, and Ingrid (Andrew)Swenson of London, England. She also has a sister, Adela Swenson Baer and a brother, Norman (Ellen) Swenson and their adult children, Ken (Penny) Swenson and Karen, and their children.
There will be no ceremony. She chose to donate her body to science and the remainder to be cremated.

Phyllis was born in Winton on December 18, 1944 to Joseph and Mildred Koschak. Phyllis graduated from Ely Memorial High School. In 1967 she married Richard Olson and together they raised a son, Brad, and a daughter, Sarah.
Phyllis worked at the school for 37 years teaching special education.  She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women where she served on the state board. She served as the State Bylaws Chair for three terms and was also the State Nominating Committee Chair for one term and the State Vice President of Educational Funds for two terms.
She enjoyed socializing with her friends at bunco, coffee time and bible study. She also enjoyed traveling to many places across the world with family and friends with her favorite trip being to Egypt.
She is survived by her son Brad (Wendy) of Alexandria, daughter Sarah (Joe) Mattson of Britt. Grandchildren Megan, Nick (Lucy), and Tony Olson, Annikka, Maija, and Wyatt Mattson; sister Betty and furry friend Duke. She is also survived by two AFS daughters. Beatrice Schaer of Switzerland and Monika Vachlavova of Slovakia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dick, her parents and her brother Patrick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely with visitation one hour prior.

CARYN LEE COOK - October 30, 1974 - February 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Caryn Lee Cook passed away in her home in Winton, Minnesota on February 4, 2022 at the age of 47. She was born at the Colorado Springs Air Force Base. The view from the room was spectacular and the deer would peer in often, probably awakening her love of nature early on.
Anyone who ever met Caryn understood the intensity of her presence. Her smile could light up a room. She was kind, caring, compassionate and always wanting to help others. She brought light to everyone she came across, making their world just a little bit brighter, a little more meaningful. She lived an incredibly full and adventurous life, supported by family and friends from all corners of this earth.
She was a natural as a Tour Manager, a position she held for many years with Collette Vacations; guests would feel like they were traveling with a friend.
Whether serving wine in California or backpacking in New Zealand; opening the eyes of newcomers to Portugal, kayaking in Rhode Island or fishing in the Boundary Waters, Caryn’s love of life was incredibly contagious.
Caryn was an amazing mother to her French Bulldog Gus, who was her absolute partner through any changes or moves.
She called many places home, including Minnesota, Rhode Island, California, Oregon and Washington but her north star was always drawn back to Ely.
Caryn is remembered and celebrated by a great network of people who will keep her in their hearts forever.
She is survived by her parents Monica (John) Miklaucic, Tommy (Rosemary) Sheets, sister Sara (Kim Beggs) Sheets, nephew James Sauter and numerous relatives. Special friends include David Cook, Joanie Somyk and Heather Larson.
She was preceded in death by her brother Brian Sheets.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.

RICHARD "DICK" H ZAHN - October 19, 1933 - February 02, 2022

Obituary Preview: Richard H (Dick) Zahn, 88, of Ely, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth.
Dick was born October 19, 1933 in Lac Qui Parle County Minnesota to John and Vida (La Tourelle) Zahn.
Dick attended Boyd, Madison, and country schools. He graduated from Vermilion Community College in 1976 with AA and AAS degrees.
Dick joined the Minnesota Nation Guard at Madison, MN in July 1950.  In January 1951 the Minnesota Guard was activated for the Korean War. His division, 47th Infantry, was sent to Camp Rucker, Alabama In July 1951 Dick was sent to Korea with the C Btry 31st FA Bat. 7th Infantry Division.  He returned to the states in July 1952 and was released from active duty.
Dick worked in Chicago for General Retail Corporation as an assistant manager of Hardy Shoe store on Chicago’s south side.
In July 1953 he joined the U.S. Navy and medically retired in April 1972 as a Chief Gunners Mate with over 21 years of service. Dick was a Tin Can Sailor, he served on five different destroyers, with deployments to England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and the Persian Gulf with the sixth fleet.  His last three ships were in the Pacific 7th fleet with tours in the Straits of Formosa, Japan, Viet Nam, and off the coast of Korea when Pueblo was taken.
He attended Navy schools for the weapon systems he worked on as a Gunners Mate also for his role in leadership. He had two tours of shore duty at the Naval Reserve Training Center as an Instructor Chief of the Center and Recruiter for the Naval Reserve.
After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. EPA on the Shagawa Lake Restoration Project in Ely, MN as the operator supervisor.  He then worked for Inland Steel at the Minorca Mine for 10 years in Virginia, MN as a millwright.  Next he took a position with Layton International as a Maintenance Specialist and Instructor in maintenance and operations of various types of processes for water treatment. He held an Oklahoma B certification in both water and wastewater and a Texas A certification in wastewater.  He later worked for San Antonio College as the primary instructor for all phases of wastewater treatment and authored its curriculum.  Dick also co-authored the chapter on Biological Rotating Contractors for the Texas Wastewater Manual.
Dick taught Driver’s Education for six years in Ely, Babbitt, and Tower for Range Drivers Training.  He had over 650 students and loved every minute of it.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans, Fleet Reserve Association, Tin Can Sailors, 40 and Eight, and the NRA. Dick was the 8th District Commander, Department of Minnesota, for the VFW and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Valoris and Desmond, sister Yvonne, his wife Joanne and granddaughter Hannah Jo. Dick is survived by his daughters Pamela (Grant) Netzer and Wendy Jo (Mike) Sibley, grandchildren, Silas (Heather) Simone, Athena (Alex) Thomsen, Chrissy (Aric) Schumacher, Nathan Baseman, and Chantal Netzer. Great grandchildren Hailey and Allison Bandelow, Margaret, Ruth, and Hattie Simone, and Hazel Jo and Michael Demel
Funeral services will be at LedgeRock Community Church, on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, with visitation at 11:00 and service at noon.
Dick and Joanne’s ashes will be interned at the Ely Veteran’s Cemetery in Ely, MN at a later date.

She was  born 4th of 14 children on October 19, 1927 to Earl and Meta Cornwell (Dutzle) in  Hannibal, Wisconsin.   She worked on the farm with her dad growing up. She married Wallace Kuehl on Jan 4, 1947.  She made her choice to serve the Lord  in 1966. She drove school bus for 15 years.  She loved to fish, snowmobile, garden, hunt, shop, and always have kids around.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Wallace Kuehl (2018), siblings: Amelia, Frieda, Calvin, Eva, Earl, David and Meta,  and a granddaughter, Lucinda (Cindy Lou) Kuehl (2018).
She is survived by her seven children: Wally (Joyce), Elroy, Linda (Alan Holden), William (Evelyn), Harriet (Roger Moen), Jacqueline (Andres Gomez),  and Katherine (Daniel Ojala). Grandchildren: Reggie, Danielle, James, Suzette, Scott, Jessica, Rodney, Aaron, Travis, Roger, Karen, Benjamin, Barett, her Siblings Vernon, Leland, Gladys, Herbie, Lois, and Phyllis, and more than 30 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
Funeral service Saturday, February 5th at the Clair Nelson Center, Finland, 11am.  Visitation 10am. Lunch immediately following.

Obituary Preview: Mona Rae Maki, 60, of Ely, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, following a long battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Boundary Waters Care Center.
Mona was born on March 8, 1961, in Ely to Ralph ‘Clyde’ and Margaret (Pechek) Maki. Mona shared her life with longtime spouse James ‘Mort’ Tome and raised 2 daughters together, Nora and Tara.
Mona found her passion caring for others through working at Carefree Living on Lakeside and in Babbitt. She always enjoyed being around and getting to know the residents and anybody she came in contact with.
Mona enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She adored spending time with her daughters, nieces, and great-nieces. She loved to play croquet, cribbage, smear, and excelled at bowling, being able to go to many tournaments. Mona loved spending the summers outside, playing croquet, and soaking in the sun. Her favorite holiday was the 4th of July being able to watch the parade, fireworks, and most importantly, playing in the annual croquet tournament of tournaments with friends and family. Mona made an impression on everyone she crossed paths with her kind heart, infectious laugh, and warm hugs. She will be sadly missed by many.
Mona is survived by her children: Nora Thoren of Grand Rapids, and Tara Tome of Ely; her longtime spouse James ‘Mort’ Tome of Ely; sister Tonya Maki of Ely; brother Brian (Sue) Maki of Ely, nieces Anna (Colin) Yahnke of Ely, Christine (Geoff) Maki of St. Paul; brother Kevin (Roxanne) Maki of Saginaw, niece Kalyn (Matt) Zimmer of Duluth, nephew Caleb Maki of Esko; brother Leroy ‘PeeWee’ (Shirley Kidd) Maki of Ely; Sister-in-laws Mary (Pete Swanson) Grahek of Ely, Barbara (Bill) Godlin of Ely, Valerie Felmus of Ely; numerous cousins, great-nieces, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Margaret (Pecheck) Maki and In-laws Frank and Kathy (Kurie) Tome.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Boundary Waters Care Center, especially the nurses and CNAs. They treated Mona like family, and she loved interacting with each and every one of the staff.
There will be a celebration of life in the summer of 2022 - details to follow as it gets closer.

DAVID MICHAEL MAYEN - October 31, 1945 - January 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: David Michael Mayen, 76, passed away at his temporary residence in Babbitt from natural causes.
David was born Oct. 31, 1945, in St. Paul, Minn., to George and Virginia Mayen. He graduated from St. Paul’s Johnson High School, and was one of the nation’s first computer programmers, working as a computer system analyst for many prominent companies across the U.S., while traveling with his family across the nation as work required. In 1980 he settled in Ely, the place he loved most of all.
He is survived by children: Russell Mayen, Debra (Craig) Pulley, Amber Mayen; mother of children, Carol Saatela; grandchildren: Megan Pulley, Anna Mills, Morgan Entner; brothers: Jeff Mayen, Michael (Joan) Mayen, Gary (Rayette) Mayen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, George and Virginia Mayen of North Branch; brother, Steven Mayen of Bovey; his grandparents; many special aunts and uncles; and nephew, Brandon Mayen.
He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus, always carried his Bible with him, and enjoyed translating scripture from Hebrew and Greek.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Not one to wish people to be sad or serious, we know Dave’s wish was for people to celebrate his life with joy.

He graduated from Highland Sr. High School in 1987 and continued his education at Purdue University and Vermilion Community College. Matt enjoyed going to Fortune Bay, playing Texas hold ‘em, having the companionship of his many dogs through the years, watching football and baseball (Go, Cubs!), and attending his nieces’ and nephews’ sporting events.
Matt is survived by his mother, Mary Frances, of Indian Land, SC; brother Tim (Stephanie) Smolen of Olympia, WA; sister Megan (Todd) Heiman, of Ely; sister Marci (Tim) Dobos of Charlotte, NC; nieces Kelly Dobos and Katie Dobos; nephews Michael (Allison) Heiman, Patrick (Haley) Heiman, Mark Heiman, Joshua Heiman, Jimmy Smolen, Kevin Dobos, and Kyle Dobos; many friends, and many caregivers who worked hard to help him live independently and with dignity as he struggled with MS.
He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas; brother, Joe; and niece, Emily Smolen.
No formal services will be held at this time. The family is planning a celebration of life to take place this summer.

Obituary Preview: John Andrew Debeltz, 83 years young of Ely MN, passed away January 17, 2022 at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother & pastor. John was born in Ely on May 13, 1938 to Joseph and Anne (Amitrano) Debeltz and was a life-long resident of Ely. He was a hard loyal worker from an early age working with his father as a masonry, worked at the Zenith mine until it shut down then married his wife Cheryl of 57 years soon after he started working at the Reserve Mine. After Reserve shut down he worked for Razor’s Edge until he retired. He was a long-time member and also had many positions at the Ely Gospel Church
John was always there to lend a helping hand  to whomever and with whatever was needed, and was loved by very many.
You may have seen him being walked by his Shih Tzu dog Trixie, shopping at Zup’s or driving in his GMC truck through town.
John loved and enjoyed spending time with his family who he is was very proud of.
John is survived by his loving wife Cheryl Debeltz, children John L. Obituary Preview: Frances “Frana” Marie Cherico was a caring individual, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world suddenly on January 14, 2022 at age 77. She was born to Adolph and Marie Dolenshak on April 8, 1944. After graduating from high school, Frana chased her dreams and traveled the country, she had married and had 3 children: Tony Cherico of Bentonville, AR, Sean & Karla Cherico of Sedan, KS, and Nicole & Darren Wallace of Frisco, TX and 6 grandchildren: Rico, Griffin, Luciano and Atelen Cherico, Austin and Channing Wallace and 1 great grandchild: Beckham Cherico. She leave this world with 2 sisters Darlene Leek and Adrienne Micklich and one brother Rudy Dolenshak. She proceeds death with one sister Mary Jean Krizner and her parents. Frana loved spending time gardening and painting, she was a very spiritual person with an incredibly huge heart. She moved back to Ely, MN in the early 90’s to open a B&B and to get back to her original roots and to live in the house her father built. She lived in various places throughout her life including Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon to mention a few, but her love and home has always been the Boundary Waters area.
