Donald Ray Eddy - February 13, 1936 - November 22, 2023

Departed: 11/22/2023 (Wheeling)
Obituary Preview: Donald R. Eddy passed away on November 22, 2023. He was born on February 13, 1936.
He was the son of the late Clifford and Verna Eddy of Fairmont, WV. He is preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Jerry and is survived by his sisters Linda (Otis) Kelley and Patty (Ron) Evans. He was married to Martha Eddy for 63 years. Mark (Renee) and Meredith are their children; and a grandson, Jack Donald Eddy "J.D." (Kimber). He has several nieces and nephews.
During his senior year at West Fairmont High School (’54), he led the state in scoring in basketball (29 points per game). He received a scholarship to continue his career at West Virginia University. This was “golden age” of WVU sports. The football teams had many bowl appearances; many athletes would have stellar careers in the NFL, NBA and Olympics; and during Don’s senior year (’57-‘58), the basketball team was ranked #1 for nearly the entire season. He maintained a close connection to WVU athletics. After graduating, he had a short stint in business in the Akron area, then he and Martha relocated to Wheeling, where Don worked as a sales manager for Centre Foundry. In December of 1972, he was offered ownership of the long established but struggling Saturn Bronze, Inc. With the unpredictable changes in the mining and steel industries in the ‘70s and ‘80s, he revitalized Saturn as a reliable
machine shop for the Valley’s industrial base. He was able to maintain a loyal and talented staff that eventually serviced mines far outside of the Valley. Don owned Saturn Bronze for nearly 25 years. Don proudly sat on the board of directors for the Bank of McMechen, where he was glad to help people obtain the dreams they sought. He worked for many years with the Boy Scouts, assisting to mold character. He was a member of the Symposiarchs.
Don led a life of integrity, rooted in Chrisitan principles, and expected it in return. He told it like it was but remained humble.
There will be a short memorial service at Vance Church on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 11 AM followed by the interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
If one would like to make a contribution, please make it to the charity of your choice in Don’s name.
Arrangements by Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003 (304-232-2732).

Mary Ellen Harmon - September 10, 1928 - October 20, 2023

Departed: 10/20/2023 (Wheeling)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Harmon September 10, 1928 – October 20, 2023
After fulfilling all of her duties as the consummate wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Ellen Harmon (nee Brown) died on October 20, 2023 at the Passavant Retirement Community where she had made her home since 2013 to be nearer to her children and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, John David and Marjorie Walter Brown, her three brothers, John, Shannon and William, and her high school sweetheart and husband of nearly 70 years, Dr. Roy Campbell Harmon, Jr. in 2018. She is survived by her three children and their spouses (all of Pittsburgh); David (Susan), John (Anne) and June Navid (Forozan); eight grandchildren; Dave (Greta), Eric (Katie), Marjorie Weiner (Jared), Emily Weimer (Daniel), Roy, Walter, Nora and Sadie Navid; and ten great-grandchildren, Claire, Audrey, William, Rosemary and Summer Harmon, Andrew and Christian Weimer, and Eleanor, Charles and Dorothy Weiner.
Raised and spending almost all of her life (until her move to the Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople) in Wheeling, West Virginia, she attended Triadelphia High School and West Liberty University. She married young and devoted herself to the care and support of her husband and their family with keen commitment.
In the 50's, 60's and 70's, she participated in various auxiliary organizations: the Wheeling Symphony Society, the Ohio Valley Medical Center (through her local Twig), and her church through the Lutheran Church Women. She was an avid, if not expert, golfer, a voracious reader, a superb cook, an accomplished dancer, and a creative and expert seamstress. But her principal focus was always her family and included an extended family of any and all children and young people in the neighborhood or in some way associated with her own children, with guests around the dinner table on many nights of the week.
After her children were grown, she spent the 80's, 90's and 00's serving as office manager for her husband's podiatry practice and was well known to and much beloved by his patients.
Noted for her physical beauty throughout her life, she will be remembered by her family and friends for the inner beauty that illumined her every interaction with others. Never demanding nor coaxing of her family, she simply had standards and expectations for each member of her family who, in their turn, strove to achieve them and will remain always grateful for the outcomes of the efforts to meet those expectations in their lives.
The family expresses its profound thanks to the kind and giving staff of Passavant Retirement Community for their loving care of their mother and grandmother.
There will be no public visitation. There will be a Requiem Eucharist at Seaman Memorial Chapel at the Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople at 2 PM on Saturday, October 28, with the Reverend Freda Snyder, Chaplain of Passavant Retirement Community, as preacher and the Reverend Brian Evans, Senior Pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Pittsburgh, as the celebrant. Arrangements have been made by Kepner Funeral Homes of Wheeling. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oglebay Foundation in care of Eriks Janelsins, 465 Lodge Drive, Wheeling, WV 26003-1967. Resurgam.
