Heyward "Trey" Preston Scott - August 14, 1976 - August 05, 2021

Departed: 08/05/2021 (Seneca)
Obituary Preview: “For the entrepreneur, it’s not a job. It’s a lifestyle. It defines them.” There are no truer words for Heyward Preston Scott, III who passed away Thursday morning, August 5, 2021. “Trey” was always looking for the next business to embark on and the next new adventure to begin. Trey’s latest adventure was owner and operator of Keowee Funeral Services of Oconee County. His path to assisting others began years ago when he joined law enforcement, where he proudly served a multitude of agencies over many years. This drive continued, even after his police service, through operating the Seneca-based funeral home.
Trey’s legacy goes beyond his passion for his business, however. He was the epitome of a people person; his personality was a culmination of positive attributes. While helping other families celebrate the lives of loved ones who’ve passed on was his day-to-day job, his generosity didn’t stop there. He continuously strived to instill pure joy in everyone he met and never hesitated to give or share with those in his community. His love for life, selflessness, and magnanimity was unmatched. Sharing was not his only way to showcase his love for people, though. Trey was the life of the party and a force of goofy nature to be reckoned with. He aspired to make everyone in the room laugh, even if it meant executing a harmless prank because he always had one up his sleeve. Trey was always the primary source of laughter in any room he walked in.
Born on August 14, 1976 in Dacusville, South Carolina, Trey was the son of the late Heyward Preston Scott, Jr. and Jeannie Andrews Scott.
He is survived by wife of many years, best friend, and mother of his three children, Bridget Bagwell Scott. He was the proud father of three sons - Andrew Thompson, Avery Thompson and Preston Scott. He also leaves behind his adopted daughter, Amber Justice Watts (Curtis) and Trey's grandson, Asher Watts. Also left to share in his beautiful memory is his loving and faithful girlfriend, Linda McAlister. He is also survived by his brother Jeff Scott (Karen) and sister Kim Scott. He was predeceased by his brother David Scott (Sherrill).
Trey will be greatly missed by his staff at Keowee Funeral Services.
On behalf of Trey Scott and the staff of Keowee Funeral Services, it has been a great honor to serve this wonderful community. Thank you for putting your trust in us to care for your loved ones in your time of need. We love each and every family that we have served.
His beloved funeral home will honor him by hosting designated hours to view the body on Friday, August 13th from 1pm-6pm. His celebration of life service will be on Trey’s 45th birthday on Saturday, August 14 at 4pm in the parking lot of the Keowee Funeral Services at 101 E North 2nd Street, Seneca, South Carolina. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair. There will be a PA system for those who choose to sit in their vehicles.
Burial will be at Mt View Cemetery in Seneca, SC following service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral program to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can also serve as a historical record, allowing future generations to learn about their ancestors.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their pricing.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help capture the person's personality and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the text of the obituary, as well as any photos or other materials.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com or Tributes.com. These sites often offer additional features like guest books and photo galleries.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform, but many online obituaries remain available indefinitely. Some sites may offer options for archiving or preserving the obituary for future generations.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it's common to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the newspaper or platform immediately to request a correction. They may be able to make changes before publication or issue a correction notice.

Can I reuse an obituary from one publication in another?

It's generally okay to reuse an obituary from one publication in another, but be sure to check with each publication first to confirm their policies.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private listing on some online platforms or choose not to publish it at all. However, keep in mind that this may limit its reach and impact.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or interests.

How do I decide what information to include in an obituary?

Think about what made the person unique and special. Consider their accomplishments, hobbies, relationships, and personality traits when deciding what information to include.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider asking a friend or family member for help. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I update an existing obituary?

This depends on the platform or publication. Some may allow updates or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to check their policies before attempting to make changes.

How do I preserve an original copy of the obituary?

You can save a physical copy of the newspaper or print out a copy from online. You may also want to consider laminating or framing it for safekeeping.
