Obituary Preview: Wendy Gayle Hunyady, 57, passed away at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Born in Johnston County on November 28, 1966, she was the daughter of Paul Willoughby and Marita Price Willoughby.
Wendy is survived by her husband, Timothy Hunyady; children, Amanda Hunyady and Garrett Hunyady; grandchildren, Addisyn, Corbin, and Camerin; half-brothers, Ritchie Willoughby and Paul Lynn Willoughby; and step-brother, Tommy Williams.
For many years, Wendy was a hair stylist and CNA at a local nursing home. Her love for her patients was evident in the way she cared for all her patients. When not at work, Wendy enjoyed being outside. While outdoors, Wendy enjoyed the various wildlife, especially birds and butterflies.
Wendy’s greatest joy in her life was family. She loved being with them and having fun. They would often travel together, going to the beach and various other locations. Being an avid thrill-seeker, there was no adventure too big for Wendy to tackle with her family right by her side. Each moment Wendy spent with her family was a moment she cherished forever. Wendy will be remembered as a loving mother and grandma.

Obituary Preview: Sally Edwards Watson, age 96, of Kenly, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Lillie Edwards, sister of Esther Shirley, Clarence Edwards, Ruth Edwards, and the wife of William Allen Watson, Sr (Bill) who was the love of her life.
Sally is survived by five children; Connie Watson, Deborah Watson, Bill Watson, Jr. and wife, Georgia, Teresa Watson, and Barbara Price and husband Jerry, nine grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren with one due in September.
Sally loved her family most of all. She loved each with their individual strengths and weaknesses. Sally enjoyed a blissful twenty-four years of marriage and raising their five children until Bill died suddenly in 1975. Widowed and the age of 47, Sally rose to the challenge of providing for her family alone. She was a hard-working woman and her work ethic was a trait she instilled in her children. She unselfishly held many jobs to make sure the family’s needs and wants were met. She worked at Kenly Manufacturing from 1964-1988, and Devil Dog manufacturing after that from 1988-2012.
An excellent seamstress, Sally retired at the age of 82. After retirement, she continued to sew and made alterations for many people. She was a very talented cook and preparing meals for her family brought her tremendous joy. Sally loved going to Kennels Beach, fresh flowers, traveling, sitting in her kitchen and watching birds. She loved her town and people in general.
The family will receive visitors at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Kenly Funeral Service with services following in the chapel at 3p.m. Burial will be held at Kenly Cemetery following the service.

Obituary Preview: Royce Bass, 88, of Lucama passed away Monday, February 26, 2024. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Kenly Funeral Service, 103 E 2nd St., Kenly, NC. A graveside service will be held at the Bass Family Cemetery officiated by Rev. De Wayne Eakes and Pastor Kelley Smart.
Royce was born in Black Creek, North Carolina on January 21, 1936. He was the son of the late Addie Bass and Lucraty Watson Bass. He attended Lucama High School. Royce proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. He became a welder by trade and worked hard throughout his life to provide for his family. Together, he and his wife started two successful businesses, Bass Welding Service and Bass Grocery.
Royce was a loving husband, Dad, and Grandpa. Given his humble upbringing, he always had a passion for helping others in need. Over the years, he shared his home with several family members. He also regularly drove friends and acquaintances to their appointments across the State. He loved to travel and made several cross-country trips with his wife and their friends.
Royce loved to bring everybody together evidenced by the many pig pickins’ and family gatherings that he and Sue hosted. He prided himself on his wood-fired barbeque that was cooked on grills and stoves that he had built.
Royce instilled in his children the love of family, the virtue of honesty, and the value of hard work.
Royce is survived by his children, Shelton Bass and wife Dawn of Sanford, Ronald Bass and wife Kathy of Columbia, SC, and Teresa Penninger of La Grande, OR. He had seven grandchildren: Christy Edmondson, Randy Bass, Katie Nobleman, Bailey Penninger, Weston Penninger, Tyler Bass, and, Abby Bass. He had six great grandchildren: Conner Bass, Colten Bass, Rachel Bass, Anakin Bass, Elizabeth Edmondson, and Louis Edmondson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Sue Bass, his sisters, Pearl Hamner, Lydia Watkins, Cleo Bass, and Margie Moss and his brothers, Autry Bass, Pierpon Bass, and Fuquay “Pap” Bass.

Norwood served his country in the United States Air Force. Norwood had a keen and deep appreciation for the opportunities that the Air Force provided. Norwood worked as a mechanical engineer for many years. Following his retirement, Norwood could be seen on the golf course or by the water with a fishing pole in hand.
Nothing brought more joy to Norwood’s life than spending time with his family. He loved being able to cook and enjoy their company. His love for them knew no bounds and each moment spent with his family was a memory that he cherished forever.
A graveside service to celebrate Norwood’s life will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Kenly Cemetery with Pastor Aubrey Williamson presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

For many years, Ronald worked as a roofer. Many people would call on him for his quality and exceptional work. In his spare time, Ronald could be seen on the back of a horse or by the water with a fishing pole in hand. Ronald was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ. He was faithful to church and loved worshipping the Lord.
Family was paramount in Ronald’s life. His love for his family knew no bounds and each moment spent together with his family was a memory he would cherish forever. He loved having the whole family around, especially his grandbabies. Ronald will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and of course, grandfather.
A service to celebrate Ronald’s life will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Kenly Funeral Service with Pastor Sammy Evans and Pastor William Holland presiding. Internment services will be held at Kenly Cemetery immediately following the service. Betty Jo is survived by her daughter, Angela Parnell Killette and husband, Van Killette, Sr.; grandson, Van Killette, Jr. and wife, Jennifer; granddaughters, Melanie Parnell Warren, Stephanie Parnell, and Katie Killette; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Killette, Jordan Killette, Gracie Killette, Hunter Warren, Rachel Warren, Marshall Ricks, Noah Shoulars, and Aiden Sullivan; and great-great-grandson, Kash Warren. Betty Jo is also survived by several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Those who knew Betty Jo knew her love for sewing. She could be seen often doing several projects at once in order to be a blessing to others. Betty was an avid gardener and felt most comfortable outdoors. One of her favorite hobbies was making Christmas candy for all to enjoy.
Family was paramount to Betty Jo. Her love for family knew no bounds and each moment spent together with them was a memory she cherished forever.

Paul is survived by his daughter, Ann Wofford (husband, Jim); his son, Tim Carver (wife, Miriam). Grandchildren: Jonathan Wofford (wife, Kristen), Garrett Wofford (wife, Andrea), Laura Nixon (husband, Joe), Sarah Boota (husband, Aaron), Emily Suit (husband, Parker). Great-grandchildren: Eli, Katie, Liza, Mason and Kori Wofford; Lily, Cooper, and Brooks Nixon, and Levi Boota. Also there are several nieces and nephews, all who loved “Papa” affectionately and were greatly loved by Papa.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Hilda Grey Scott Carver; his brother, Jesse C. Carver, Jr.; sisters, Lessie Coleman, Clyde Johnson, and Doris Whitley.
Paul was a lover of music, especially Gospel quartet music. He sang in a Gospel quartet known as The Templemen / One Accord for decades. His professional career encompassed roles at Thurston Motor Lines, Exide Corporation, US Supply Company, Kaiser Permanente, and his own accounting business. He also served Temple Baptist Church in various roles including Temple Day School’s accountant, and Deacon. Many individuals and small businesses relied on him for assistance with income tax preparation and bookkeeping. He was also the family photographer and a huge fan of the beach where annual, all-inclusive family vacations were always enjoyed.
The family will receive friends on February 24th, 2024, from 10:30am until 12:00pm in the Family Life Center at Temple Baptist Church, 1417 Clifton St, Raleigh, NC. A celebration of life service will follow in the church sanctuary at 12:00pm to celebrate Paul’s life. There will be a private burial service in Kenly, NC.

Judy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Steve Cuddington; sons, Brian Cuddington and wife, Simone of Pine Level, Tim Cuddington and wife, Robin of Pine Level, and Chris Cuddington and wife, Michelle of Princeton; grandchildren, Ben Cuddington, Cameron Cuddington, Jaden Cuddington, Weslee Dove, Brayden Dove, Madison Cuddington, Callie Cuddington, and Willow Cuddington. Judy is also survived by two brothers, Jerry Hood of Grantham and Ronald Hood and wife, Donna, of Grantham, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Nothing was more important to Judy than her family. Her love for them knew no bounds and each moment spent together with them was a memory she cherished forever. Her grandchildren were the apples of her eye. Judy will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Judy was a faithful member of Kenly Original Free Will Baptist Church. Though we will miss Judy here on Earth, we know there was a celebration in Heaven when she walked the streets of gold with her Savior.
A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the visitation, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Kenly Cemetery.

In addition to his mother, Mickey is survived by his children, Clarence “Corky” Jackson and wife, Tammy, Lee Jackson and wife, Janet, and Lori Jackson; grandchildren, Heather Barbour, Kaylee Jackson, Kaleb Durham and wife, Alysha, Ethan Durham, Brandon Hill, and Adam Hill; great-grandchildren, Emily Barbour, Riley Hill, and Kayden Durham; siblings, Donna E. Jackson, and Steve Jackson and wife, Hope.
For many years, Mickey could be seen all over Eastern North Carolina on construction sites. No matter if it was laying out plans, or being a superintendent on a job site, everyone knew to go to him for his expertise. When not at work, Mickey could be seen with a fishing rod in hand trying to catch a trophy fish. Mickey could also be seen in his spare time enjoying a game of billiards. Mickey was drafted into the United States Army where he courageously served time for his country. Mickey had a keen and deep appreciation for his country and its veterans.
A graveside service to celebrate Mickey’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Jackson Cemetery in Kenly with Pastor Andy Stovall presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Sallie enjoyed many years as a customer service representative in the banking industry. She shared many fond memories of her co-workers and time they spent together. She loved spending time with her family, friends, and Piney Grove Church Community. She always shared a smile, offered a meal or just a laugh around the table. She was very proud of her grandchildren and especially loved bragging about her great-grands. She will be missed by all but we know Jesus welcomed home an angel on Christmas Day. As mother would say, "Every Day Is Christmas".
Sallie is survived by her daughters, Sandra Phillips(Doug), Sallie Jo Boyette(Randy), Susan Peele(Louis); three grandchildren, Sterling Phillips(April), Ryan Phillips(Shannon), Ethan Boyette; two great-grandchildren, Dallas Phillips, Shaylyn Phillips; sister, Faye Bass Hall; brother-in-law, Harold Hinnant; sister-in-law, Patsy Purvis; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Vernon Purvis, Jr. and her sister, Janyce Bass Hinnant.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday, December 29, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. A service to celebrate Sallie’s life will be held in the chapel at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Reverend Gavin Daniels officiating. Interment will conclude at the Dixon Family Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: George Harvey White, 84, passed away at Rex Hospital on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Born in Durango, Colorado on February 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Loyd White and Sally “Sue” Mullenix White.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Janice Pope White and brother, Loyd R. White.
George is survived by his special nieces and nephew, DonnaSue Graham and husband, Terry, Sonya Pope, and Jeffrey White; sister-in-laws, Faye McLain, Cindy Hooks, Brenda Lewis, and Joyce Pope. He is also survived by several other nieces and nephews and cousins that he loved dearly.
George had a heart for education. For many years, he served as a superintendent in Alaska for the public school system. George could often be seen reading. Being a history buff, his favorite books were historical novels.
A service to celebrate George’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Internment services will be held in Kenly Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Joyce Ann Brothers, 74, passed away at UNC Johnston Health in Smithfield on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Born in St. Lawrence, New York on December 22, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Lavine and Elizabeth Oney Lavine.
For many years, Joyce worked as a clerk with the New York DMV. After her retirement, Joyce could be seen out enjoying watching birds and many other wild animals. When not outside, Joyce would be enjoying a good book.
Per her request, no formal services will be held.
Joyce is survived by her son, Blake Webber; and brother, Theordore W. Lavine, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her son, Robert Webber; brother, Jack Lavine; and sister, Helen Petra.

The family will greet friends prior to the service, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Faye Squires, Henry Garris, Percy Horne and Arthie Mae Horne.

Obituary Preview: Thurman C. Wall, Jr., known affectionately as T.C., peacefully passed away on December 17, 2023, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at the age of 91. He was born on January 19, 1932, in Micro, North Carolina, and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
T.C. was a faithful member of Currituck Bible Baptist Church in Grandy, where he served as a deacon for three years during the early years of the church. His dedication to his faith and his involvement in the church community brought him much joy and fulfillment throughout his life. T.C. was an Army veteran who served honorably in the Korean War.
T.C. will be deeply missed by his wife, LaRae Wall; as well as his daughter, Donna Hobbs, and her husband, Cecil Hobbs, and their family of Virginia Beach, VA; his sons, Gary W. Wall, and his wife Susan C. Wall, and their family from Wilmington, North Carolina; Joseph B. Wall and his wife Teresa Wall, and their family from Jarvisburg, North Carolina; his sister, Nancy Evans Radford, and her husband Sheldon Radford of Kenly, North Carolina; his brother, Nerry T. Wall, Sr. of Pink Hill, North Carolina; and by his numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. His kind and generous nature touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
T.C. was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace E. Wall; his parents, Letha Ann Wall and Thurman C. Wall, Sr.; and his sister, Faye Johnson.
A celebration of T.C.’s life will be held at Currituck Bible Baptist Church later in January. The date and time will be announced when plans are finalized.  Private interment will take place at the Kenly Cemetery.

In addition to her mother, Ludie was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Charlie Renfrow.
Ludie is survived by her daughters, Pamela Wilson and husband, T.B. of Kenly, Dale Renfrow of the home, Lynn Moss and husband, Ricky of Wendell; son, Rev. Jasper Renfrow and wife, Sandra; grandchildren, Crystal W. Oravits and husband, Chris, Jason Renfrow and wife, Amy, and Derek Wilson and wife, Lee Anna; great-grandchildren, Austin Oravits, Colby Oravits, JonAvery Oravits, Davis Renfrow, J.P. Renfrow, and Katie Wilson.
Ludie was a member of New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly. She worked for many years with J & J Apparel in Kenly.
Ludie sang with her family that made up The New Jerusalem Way Singers for over 20 years. She was chosen as the Queen of Gospel Music by the East Coast Gospel Music Association in 1987.
Ludie loved her family and will be remembered as a faithful wife, mother, and granny.
A graveside service to celebrate Ludie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023 at the Renfrow Family Cemetery with her son, Rev. Jasper Renfrow officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.

Billy is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Horne Sullivan of Middlesex; children, Billy Ray Sullivan, Jr. and wife, Christy of Dunn, Cristy Miles and husband, Johnny of Zebulon, and Bradley Sullivan and wife, Melissa of Middlesex; stepchildren, Sharon Wright and husband, Roger of South Carolina, and Richard “Ricky” Barnes and wife, Vicky of Middlesex; grandchildren, Jordan Sullivan, Derek Miles, Tyler Miles, Alayna Sullivan, and Kaylee Sullivan; 10 step-grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Billy is also survived by his siblings, Vicky Bailey of Middlesex, Patricia Godwin and husband, W.N, of Middlesex, and Tim Sullivan and wife, Jan of Middlesex.

Obituary Preview: John Melville, Jr., 78, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023 at UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield. Born in Painsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late John Melville, Sr. and Florence Rose Melville.
John is survived by his wife, Mary Hintelmann Melville; daughter, Meredith Melville (Brad); grandchildren, Haley Aldrich (Maurice) and Mackenzie Melville; and great-granddaughter, Zoey.
John served his country in the United State Air Force. After his service time, he owned and operated a horse farm along with his daughter. Together, they formed an unbreakable bond. John was notorious for his green thumb. Nothing pleased him more than being outdoors. John would not go anywhere without his service dog, Mya. The two formed an inseparable bond like no other.
Per John’s request, no formal serviced will be held.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Brianna Jean.

Demps was an auto mechanic for more than 40 years. In his retirement he loved to work in his shop designing and making things. He designed, made, and flew numerous model aircraft. He could fix or make nearly anything. His last love was making stringed musical instruments.
John is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Pittman Bailey; daughter, Wendy Thorpe and husband, Allen; son, Frank Bailey and wife, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Jeffrey Bailey and wife, Amber, Harvey “Rat” Whitley and wife, Ashlee, Brandi Mitchell and husband, George, Ashlynn Bailey, Josh Bailey and wife, Alaina, Noah Bailey, Dustin Collins; six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Susie Rutledge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncle, John Bailey, his sister, LaRue Tosto and his daughter, Sandra Collins.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 7, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. for a time of visitation at Kenly Funeral Service. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Frank Bailey officiating. Interment will be held on Friday, December, 8, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the Kenly Cemetery.
