Years later she met a strapping young man named Kenneth Smith, who many knew as “Shorty”. She became a mother of Shorty’s three children Mike, Butch, and Kimberly. Betty Jean Russell - May 08, 1937 - January 25, 2022

Departed: 01/25/2022 (Pawhuska)
Obituary Preview: Beloved longtime Pawhuska resident Betty Jean Russell passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at her home in Pawhuska, Ok. She was 84.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 12, 11:00AM, at the First United Methodist Church of Pawhuska.
Betty was born May 8, 1937 in El Paso, Tx to John Thomas and Hazel T Heath nee Armstrong. She grew up in Van Horn, Tx with her older brothers Johnny and Bubba. There she had many dear friends and was a very popular, active student who participated in activities such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, band. She served on student council, was a majorette and held honors as Football Sweetheart, FFA Sweetheart, Cantaloupe Queen and Cotton Queen.
She was only 17 when she met Raymond, a handsome young cowboy, bull-rider, roper, and bareback bronc rider from Ysleta, Tx. From there began a romance that would go down in history. It didn’t take long before they knew they were soul mates.  They married on March 26, 1955 at the home of Raymond’s sister and brother-in-law, Loree and Lee Richards of Carlsbad, NM.
Betty’s first job was as a telephone switchboard operator. In those days to make a phone call you had to go through the operator, who could listen in on your calls. Betty COULD have told many stories about neighbors far and wide, but she always kept the secrets to herself! Betty & Raymond had many adventures as young newlyweds. Their honeymoon was spent driving a cattle truck to California. Raymond’s jobs as a driver and ranch foreman took them many places over those first years, from California, Arizona, and New Mexico then back to Texas again in 1964 where they opened a grocery store in Sierra Blanca, Tx. A few months later, Betty and Raymond adopted a spirited, blue-eyed baby girl they named Rae Jean. Within a couple of years Raymond joined the Hudspeth County sheriff’s department as a deputy. Then in 1969 they completed their family with the adoption of Sharon Kaye. Then with some good luck and God’s perfect plan, Raymond’s job as a Special Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association brought them to Pawhuska, OK in 1971.
When Sharon began school, Betty went to work as a Special Reading Aide and later went on to become the Media Center Coordinator, both jobs filled her heart with joy. She made some of her dearest, long-time friends working at the school. She taught many young children to read and passed on a love of books to her students. Later when she joined the literacy council, she taught adults to read. Even when she retired, she could not resist being a part of the school and became the School Board Treasurer.
Although Betty didn’t think she was creative, Rae and Sharon can attest otherwise. She was constantly doing crafts and projects with the girls and even designed a craft room when their new house was built. Her creative nature, no doubt, was passed down to the girls.
She loved her First United Methodist Church family with all her heart and was very active in that community. She taught Sunday school, was a member of United Methodist Women, and served on many church committees and groups. She was a member of, Eastern Star, PEO, and Mary Martha served as a Brownie, Girl Scout and 4-H leader.
Once they retired, Betty and Raymond took time to travel. They loved going on road trips and discovering new places. They would often meet up with friends and family at their destinations. One of their favorite places to travel to was Canada. They loved the scenery and the people.
In recent years, Betty played Bridge and was a member of Bridge Club. She loved getting together with her friends and hosting bridge tournaments. Although Betty had many accomplishments in her life, what she was most proud of was her husband, Raymond, daughters Rae Jean and Sharon, and her grand kids, SueEllen and Brennan.
Betty’s heart for service was never ending. She and Raymond were long-time volunteers for Meals on Wheels. She showed her love through food, encouragement, and kindness. She really understood the power of a kind gesture. As her daughters will tell you “Mamma wrote hundreds, maybe even thousands of cards and notes throughout her life. Each one with love and true heart behind it; Notes of thanks, sympathy, encouragement, celebration and sometimes just to say she was thinking of you.” And if you wrote her a card, it was categorically filed away so that she could re-read them on a rainy day. She never threw a card away, Perhaps because she lived every day with a heart full of gratitude, and a deep love for her Father in Heaven. Her strong faith and kindness were apparent in her interactions with everyone she met. She was always thinking of others and always striving to help.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas and Hazel T Heath nee Armstrong. Her brothers John Thomas Heath, Jr. and Don “Bubba” Heath, Sister-in-law Gisela Fischer Heath, Nephew, Steve Heath.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her husband and best friend of 66 years, Raymond Russell, daughters Rae Jean Russell, Fort Collins, CO, and Sharon Albrecht (Ed) Georgetown, TX, Grandson Brennan Albrecht, Georgetown, TX and Granddaughter SueEllen Albrecht, Lubbock, TX. Other beloved family members include sister-in-law, Nez Heath, niece Cynthia Heath, Marshall, Tx, great nephew Corby Heath (Tephy) Miami, Fl, nephew John Thomas Heath, III., (Nancy), Great nephew John (Perky) Mt. Enterprise TX, nephew Dave Heath, Alamogordo NM; Niece Janine Heath, Van Horn, Tx. Nephew Don Heath (Lorie), great nieces Brittney Heath, Seattle Wa, Courtney Heath Dianda (Marcus), great-great nephew, Carson Joe Dianda, all of San Angelo, Tx; Nephew, Ronnie Heath (Jessica), great nephew Hudson, all of Midland, Michigan. Niece Susie Heath (Steve, dec’d.), Liberty Hill, Tx
Betty was passionate about her church and School of the Ozarks, and she gave to both regularly. Memorials may be given in Betty’s name to College of the Ozarks, and the First United Methodist Church.
