Paul W. Kiessling - May 03, 1924 - October 15, 2023

Departed: 10/15/2023 (Marshall)
Obituary Preview: Paul W. Kiessling, age 99, of Ceresco, died on Sunday morning, October 15, 2023 in the loving care of his family and caregivers at the Colonial House West in Marshall Township.
Paul was born on May 3, 1924, at home in Hillsdale to Erwin W. and Audre R. (Martin) Kiessling.  When he was 2 years old his family moved him to Marshall Township on C Drive North where his family farmed.    Paul helped his parents with the farm growing up and attended country school at the old Conley School in Marshall Township.  Paul entered Marshall High School and graduated as a member of the Marshall High School Redskin Class of 1942.
Paul was married to Donna L. Hamilton on December 12, 1943.  It was the start of a fruitful and loving partnership that lasted until Donna’s death on October 28, 2009.
Paul went to work doing sales and service work for the R.M. Lutz and Sons John Deere dealership on Marshall Street in Ceresco.  Donna and Paul lived just a short walk down the street on Marshall Street.  Paul spent the rest of his life in that home where he and Donna raised their family.   The Dadow family purchased Lutz and Sons and Paul continued working for them for many years selling and servicing milking equipment for farmers in southern Michigan.  Paul retired from Dadow Power Equipment in 1986 after he turned 62. At that same time Paul became a beloved and trusted associate at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home (Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services) in Marshall.  He served his community at the funeral home until he was 96 years old!  Paul was a familiar and comforting figure at almost all the funerals conducted at Kempf’s during those years. Craig and all his colleagues called Paul “The General” because of his amazing leadership and work ethic.  Even in his mid-90’s he was a challenge to physically keep up with while setting up or cleaning up!
Paul was a committed community servant all his life.  In 1952 he was part of a group of men that formed what is now the Marshall Township Fire Department.  Paul served as the Assistant Fire Chief during the administration of E. Reed Vincent.  He was appointed as Marshall Township Fire Chief in 1981.  Paul retired as Chief when he turned 65 in 1989.  Paul was a Life Member of the State Fire Chief’s Association and the Western Michigan Fire Chief’s Association.   He was a member of the former Calhoun County Firefighters Association.
He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Marshall where he served 3 terms as Congregational President and numerous terms on the Board of Elders, as well pitching in to work at any church project needing hands on help.
Paul enjoyed his cabin up north, especially deer season when he and his sons and grandsons and son-in-law joined him for many years.  Fishing was another enjoyable hobby when he had time to do it!    Paul served as a Calhoun County 4-H Leader for many years.
In addition to the fire department, Paul served Marshall Township for many years as Chairman of the Fire Board, Board of Review and most recently as Assistant to the Township Supervisor until he became ill. Paul’s mind remained sharp all his life and his valuable counsel to many was always sought out and respected. Paul liked to travel with Donna.  They took a trip by car after they both retired in 1986 to tour the western states.   Paul and Donna hosted a group of German Firefighters and their families here in 1988.  They were invited to come to Germany by that group and in summer of 1989 they traveled to Germany, a trip that was a highlight for them!
Paul is survived by his beloved family, his daughter and son-in-law Jeannette and David Glen, sons and daughters-in-law David and Carol Kiessling and Robert and Marjorie Kiessling; 7 grandchildren, Tad (Jaime) Kiessling, Troy (Kathy)  Kiessling, Dan (Kimberly) Glen, Kelly Blaskie, Tamara (Matthew) Kiessling Strole, Jennifer Kiessling and Tina Green; 12 great-grandchildren. Marlene Janette Kinne - August 22, 1933 - October 03, 2023

Departed: 10/03/2023 (Marshall)
Obituary Preview: Marlene Janette (Palmer) Kinne, 90, of Battle Creek, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. She passed away after withstanding a lengthy illness, which slowed her down, but it did not stop her. She handled it with her usual positive attitude.
Marlene was the firstborn of Fred and Lucille (French) Palmer on August 22, 1933 in Marshall, Michigan. She was the older sister to Ruth and Fred Jr. (Sonny). She graduated from Marshall High School in 1952 after being involved in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA) and Future Homemakers of America (FHA).
During her first marriage to Donald Tech in 1953, they lived in Kalamazoo and welcomed their children, John and Amy. They then moved to Red Hook, New York and had their third child, Mary. She enjoyed being a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. She made many close friends in Red Hook that remained life-long friends with many good memories.
After her marriage ended in divorce, she moved back to her hometown of Marshall with her children. Marlene worked as a secretary at Albion College, Warren-Sherer, and Sherer Gillett for several years while raising her children. She was then hired by the Calhoun Intermediate School District as Administrative Assistant at the Doris Klaussen Developmental Center in Battle Creek. Marlene always had  a soft-spot for helping others and connecting with people.
In 1990, Marlene reconnected with Rodney (Skip) Kinne at an American Legion dance. They immediately realized they knew each other from high school and had graduated together. They were inseparable from that day on and were married on November 30, 1990. They enjoyed many activities together over the next almost 33 years.
After she retired from Doris Klaussen in 1998, Marlene and Rodney traveled the country, visiting many states to see family, friends and attractions. They enjoyed traveling south for the winters, living at their trailer in Twin Palms in Lakeland, Florida. They also wintered in Texas and Arizona, making friends wherever they went. Marlene also enjoyed traveling on excursions with her mother in retirement.
In the last five years, Marlene survived many challenges to her health, but always had a passion for life and for her Savior. She attended the United Methodist Church in Marshall with her family when she was young and was a very active member in her church when she was in New York, teaching Sunday School and serving where needed. When she moved back to Marshall, she resumed worshiping at the United Methodist Church. After she met Rodney, she started attending Christ Lutheran Church with him and was active in the Children’s Ministry, serving faithfully at their Vacation Bible School for the last 25 years. She loved being of service to others and had a strong faith. She lived her faith every day. Marlene enjoyed everything! She lived her life to the fullest. Whether it was attending the Marshall Home Tour, strawberry (or blueberry, peach, apple…) picking, Cedar Point trips (with her children, then grandchildren, then great-grandchildren) or going on long road trips with her daughter, Mary & her family (like the Grand Canyon trip or the Boston trip), she was up for anything and rarely said ‘no’. Amongst many other things, she had a life-long love of reading, flower gardening, traveling, bowling, cooking, canning, baking, and shopping!
The thing Marlene loved the most in life was her family. Each child and grandchild was very special to her, but the great-grandchildren were the icing on the cake for her. She cherished each one and had a special connection with them. Over the years, she attended and supported her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their activities, sporting events, and family birthday parties, whenever possible.  Along with her children and grandchildren missing her tremendously, the ‘greats’ will miss her smiles, her hugs, her cookies, and letting them have ice cream before dinner.
Along with Rodney, Marlene volunteered her time serving others through Meals on Wheels, Safe Place, Haven of Rest, Fredonia Grange, the American Red Cross, and for other groups. She also worked as an Oaklawn Auxiliary volunteer in their Gift Shop. She loved animals, adopting many cats throughout the years.
Marlene is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Rodney Kinne; sister, Ruth (Don) St. John, brother Fred (Demaris) Palmer Jr., and sisters-in-law/brothers-in-law, Bonnie & John Bidwell, Paddy & Darrell Pifer, Peggy Kinne, & Mary LaFountain. Additionally, she is survived by her children: John (Kristi) Tech, Amy (Kevin) Darscheid, and Mary A. Murphy; and her grandchildren: John Tech Jr., Danielle (Jason) Sackett, Michael (Amy) Bocanegra, Lora (Ted) Finch, Diane (Jayme) Biljum, Daniel (Rayna) Sommers, Angela Sommers [Sopheaktra (Michael) Meng], Andrew (Kristen) Sommers, and Matthew Murphy. She also is survived by many great-grandchildren: Matthew Tech, Ashley Tech, Austin Sackett, Logan Sackett, Alex Finch, Lucas Finch, Allison Biljum, Emily Biljum, Jack Biljum, Hailey Shepherd, Molly Sommers, Stacy Sommers, Ellie Sopheaktra, Louis Sopheaktra, Kevin Sommers, and Macey Murphy. She is also survived by many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Sr. & Lucille Palmer, brothers-in-law Ronald Kinne & Romer "Mickey" Kinne, and many cherished grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, & brothers/sisters-in-law.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 10-11am at Christ Lutheran Church, 440 West Dr N, Marshall, Michigan 49068. Jean Pepper Rogers - November 05, 1928 - October 03, 2023

Departed: 10/03/2023 (Marshall)
Obituary Preview: Jean Pepper Rogers, passed away on Tuesday, 3 October 2023 in Escondido, California just short of her 95th birthday.
Jean was born in Pioneer, Kentucky on 5 November 1928, to Harvey and Mildred (Pepper) Hayes. She completed her high schooling at and graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky in 1950, majoring in music.  She taught music briefly before marrying Marion Thomas (Tom) Rogers, Jr. in Dayton, Ohio on Christmas Day, 1951.  Their first home was in Dexter, Missouri, where Tom was teaching aeronautics to new Air Force flight students.  Both of their children, daughter Cathy and son Rick, were born there.  They followed Tom’s work to Middletown, Ohio and then to Marshall in 1960.  In addition to being a full-time mother and homemaker, Jean worked at Michigan Air Activities, which she owned with her husband, at Corning Glass Works and later Walters Distributing Co., all in Marshall, as a bookkeeper.  She later served as Executive Director of Marshall United Way until her retirement in 2008.
The family made their home in Homer from 1970 to 1983, where Tom returned to farming, which he knew as a boy.  Jean and Tom began the adventure of a lifetime in 1983 when they moved to Point Mackenzie, Alaska to build a dairy farm from the ground up.  While successful in that undertaking, they decided to return to Marshall in 1995 to spend their golden years among life-long friends.  Tom passed away in Marshall in December 2008.
Jean continued her love of music throughout her life, and was a committed member and frequent soloist in her church choir at Marshall United Methodist Church until she reluctantly gave up singing to enjoy the choir as a service participant at the age of 80.
Jean loved playing games, particularly card games, and was a challenging opponent in multiple bridge groups until she left Marshall for what would be her last visit to California in December 2022.
Jean is lovingly remembered by her sister, Anne Montgomery, of Sierra Madre, California, her daughter Cathy (Jerry) Thomas of Poway, California, her son Rick of Marshall, her stepson Tom of Jamestown, Ohio, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be announced at a future date. The family invites you to express your thoughts and memories in the online guestbook at https://www.kempffuneralhome.com
