Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, flowers, and charitable donations in memory of the person who has passed.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist with writing the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Some online platforms may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate their life and make the tribute more engaging.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submitting it for publication.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private posting on an online platform or share it only with close friends and family through email or social media.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person who has passed and continue their legacy.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration that an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or publication. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

This depends on the platform's capabilities. Some online platforms may allow you to include links to memorial funds, photo albums, or other relevant resources.

How do I ensure that an online obituary is easily found by search engines?
