Obituary Preview: Our beloved Melissa Angelina Cornell was suddenly taken from us on Saturday, March 16, 2024 way too soon at the age of 46. Missy was the epitome of personality. She cherished her connections with friends and family. Her vibrant personality radiated kindness and she was always eager to lend a helping hand with a warm smile. She had limitless energy that was contagious to whomever she came in contact with. She was funny and genuine. If you didn’t want a hug, you got one anyway. The world just feels empty without her.
Melissa had a successful career as a Speech Pathologist where she touched the lives of the students she serviced as well as the colleagues she worked with.
She was an exceptional mother who enjoyed supporting her children in all aspects of their lives. She passionately cheered on her two sons at their athletic events and school activities. She is survived by her husband, Shawn, her two boys Will and Tyler, her parents, Maureen and Bill Mitchell, her sisters Jamie O’Keefe (Jon O’Keefe) and Suzanne Chmura (Doug Chmura). In-laws, Jean and Bill Cornell, sister-in-law Paula Burdick, brother-in-law Billy Burdick (Teresa Burdick), brother-in-law Bob Cornell and her 4 nephews and 4 nieces.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Liverpool First United Methodist Church, 604 Oswego Street, Liverpool with services immediately following at 11:00 AM. Burial will be immediately following the services at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, 8668 County Route 57, Baldwinsville, NY 13027

Pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, James O. Galloway in 2004 and sisters, Essie Ashbeck in 1984 and Bessie A. Fairchild in 2023.
Survived by: Four children: Christine Galloway, James M. (Kennidyann) Galloway, Michael J. Galloway and John C. Galloway.
Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one nephew.
Graveside services will be held on MONDAY, March 25, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Valley Cemetery, 2500 Valley Drive, Nedrow, NY .

Born at the former Sampson Air Force Base in Seneca County, he was the son of the late Lawrence M. Cronin and Joan F. (Bailey) Cronin.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Eric) Walters and one sister, Lauren (Michael) Bailey-Thomas.
Also surviving are four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Born on May 22, 1942 in Binghamton, NY to the late Clifton Vallier and Carolyn (Lewis) Vallier.
Dick had four siblings that pre-deceased him; Norma Meredith, twins Clayton and Dayton Vallier and Carol Smith.
He joined the US Army in 1960 and served three years in Baumholder and Berlin, Germany.
Dick worked as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Post Office for many years retiring in 1996.
Surviving his wife of 51 years, Catherine Svoboda Vallier, his brother-in-law, Raymond (Kathy) Svoboda and several nieces and nephews.
Dick was an avid reader, mainly history and he enjoyed horse racing and going to Saratoga. He enjoyed watching football games and loved his pets and taking care of all the backyard birds and animals. Funeral Services will be private

Sister Michelle Marie Lister, OSF - December 23, 1946 - February 20, 2024

Obituary Preview: Sister Michelle Marie went home to God on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, New York. Sister was born in Philadelphia, PA to Eugene and Theresa Buzby McCann. She was 77 years old and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 56 years.
Sister’s ministry of service to the people of God began as a teacher in New Jersey and New York. This was followed by ministry at Covenant House in NYC. The next years evidenced her great care and concern for assisting others as a Drug Counselor, Director of Spirit & Life Center, and Executive Director of L’ARCHE in Syracuse, NY, Director of Residential Services at Maryville Alcohol Treatment Center in Williamstown, NJ, Program Director in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, various counseling positions and finally Prayer Ministry at the Franciscan Villa.
Sister Michelle will be remembered for the love and devotion she gave to her younger sister “Little Michele”. She was tireless in including “Little Michele” in every part of her life. If Sister Michelle was in sight, “Little Michele” wasn’t far behind. She touched many lives with her quiet presence and gave of herself for any request of time or advice. One of her greatest joys was the Twelve Step Retreats she gave for those in recovery.
Sister Michelle was pre-deceased by her parents, adoptive father Robert J. Lister; two brothers Edward and Robert J. Lister, Ken Bachman, (brother-in-law) and her sister Michele Lister. She is survived by four sisters: Theresa Bachman, Deborah M. Lister, Kate (Michael) Nelson, Mary (John) Matthews; four brothers: Patrick (Kathy) Lister, Joseph (Patty) Lister, Charles (Deb) Lister, Richard (Sally) Lister, several nieces and nephews and the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Franciscan Villa Chapel, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, NY on Tuesday, February 27 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 am in the Chapel. Jean A. Becker - March 12, 1932 - February 16, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jean A. (Wagner) Becker passed away in her sleep on the morning of February 16, 2024 at Loretto Geriatric Center Cunningham 6th Floor about a month shy of 92 years old.
She was born to the late Howard and Henrietta (Roskopf) Wagner in Syracuse during March of 1932. She graduated from Assumption High School, Class of 1950. Jean worked as a Secretary at John Deere while it had an office in Syracuse for almost 30 years and took early retirement from the company when it announced it would be transferring much of its office to Ohio.
While working at John Deere, Jean’s parents knew Anna and Laurence Becker who arranged for Jean to meet their son, George Becker. Jean always said that was the happiest day of her life when she met George. After a few years of dating, they were married in Assumption Church and settled in Liverpool. After retirement from John Deere, she worked part-time at the Wegmans Taft Road store as a cashier where she stayed for over 20 years and had many regular customers.
When not working, Jean liked to shop for clothes at stores such as Chappell’s, Flah’s, Dey Brothers and JCPenney’s. She also loved to sing and was in the Assumption Church Choir for about 20 years while Glenn Armstrong was the director. Jean also had a love of dogs and cats taking care of several throughout the years.
Jean was predeceased by the love of her life, George in 2010 and her sister Patricia Costello Norris in 2011. She is survived by her loving son, Bob Becker of Liverpool and her nephew, Rob Costello in Binghamton.
Bob wishes to thank the staff of both the 11Th Floor and more recently the 6th Floor at Loretto Cunningham and her nurse, Julie. They gave Jean special care these past few years including all the COVID protocols, Zoom calls and telephone calls to stay in contact as much as possible when visits were not always allowed.
Visitation will be on WEDNESDAY, February 21, 2024 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Keegan-Osbelt-Knight Funeral Home, 900 N. Salina Street, Syracuse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on THURSDAY, February 22, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina Street, Syracuse.

Fr. Nevin Edwin Henry Hammon, OFM Conv. - October 15, 1936 - January 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: FR. NEVIN EDWIN HENRY HAMMON, OFM Conv.
Fr. Nevin Edwin Henry Hammon, OFM Conv., 87, a Franciscan Friar of Our Lady of the Angels Province, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 in Enfield, CT.
Born in Syracuse on October 15, 1936, he was one of four sons born to Robert and Marie (nee Mautz) Hammon. Having grown-up at Assumption Parish in Syracuse, Nevin entered the minor seminary of the Conventual Franciscans on Staten Island in 1951. He entered the Novitiate in Middleburg, NY in 1956, making his first profession of vows on August 12, 1957.
Friar Nevin then went to Rome, studying at the Pontifical University of St. Bonaventure (“the Seraphicum”), where he earned his S.T.L. in 1963. During that time, he professed his solemn vows in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, on December 11, 1960. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome, on February 17, 1963.
Fr. Nevin continued his studies at Lateran University in Rome, completing his J.C.D. in 1968. He then returned to the US, serving as Professor of Canon Law at St. Anthony-on-Hudson Seminary in Rensselaer, NY, a position he held until 1987.
From 1987-1991, Fr. Nevin ministered as Associate Pastor and Director of Adult Religious Education at St. John the Evangelist Parish in New York. Between 1991-1997, Fr. Nevin resided in Syracuse while caring for his dying mother. Following his mother’s death and final disposition of her estate, Fr. Nevin moved to Alabama, where he helped launch the seminary for the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, whose Constitutions and statutes he was responsible for composing.
In 1998, Fr. Nevin returned to Rome, beginning a thirteen-year ministry as a confessor at the Vatican Penitentiary. During that time, in 2008, he was installed as a Papal Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. Returning again to the US in 2012, he was first assigned in residence at Bridgeport, NY, before moving back to his native Syracuse. In 2022, his health beginning to fail, Fr. Nevin transitioned to Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Enfield, CT, where he remained until his death.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center, 1315 Enfield St., Enfield CT 06082, with a Franciscan Wake Service at 4:00 PM.
A second visitation will be on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina Street, Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on February 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Assumption Church.
The Rite of Committal and burial will be immediately following in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.

Mary Agnes Perry passed early on Saturday morning, January 13, 2024 at the Commons on Saint Anthony in Auburn, NY, where she had resided in Memory Care for over 2 years.
She was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on September 2, 1940 and grew up in the Syracuse NY area where she attended the Cathedral school, downtown. With her marriage to Richard Perry, she moved to western NY to live & work and raise her family.
Mary was a true western NY person, a “Buffalo Gal” who lived in Batavia, Eden, Orchard Park and Hamburg during her long life. Along with her son Robert Perry, she possessed a deep passion for antiques and became a well known antiques buyer and seller in that area.
She was preceded in death by her former husband Richard Perry in 2012 and by her beloved son, Robert Perry in 2018.
Mary is survived by her sister Catherine Block (Mark) of Camillus, NY; sister Theresa McLellan of Syracuse, NY; brother Thomas McLellan (Rebecca) of Gladstone, OR; niece Ellen Block Olivieri of Syracuse NY and niece Audrey Block of Chester, VT. Also her son Richard Perry Jr. (Debra) of Cheyanne WY and grandchildren.
Along with family, Mary leaves behind her many dear friends that she made during her life long antiques career. She is also survived by her dearest friend, Kenneth Both of Hamburg, NY, with whom she found companionship, joy and love during her later years.
A private memorial gathering will be held in the Spring in Orchard Park, the town that she considered to be her home for so many years.

Born in Arlington, Virginia to the late Walter K. Davis and Alice (Blackwell) Davis.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and one brother, John Davis.
Carl lived quite an interesting life. He lived in Manila and Malaysia and enjoyed visiting Rome. He often told his friends about “hanging out with princes from Pakistan” and traveling the world.
He will be very missed. He was always available to listen and to help whomever he could. Carl played lead and bass guitar and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice.
In one of his essays that Carl wrote years ago, he wrote his advice for an ideal life. “An ideal life would be no war, no hate, no sickness, no poverty or cruelty. Fair prices for all”. Rest in peace. Find your Rock-n-Roll heaven---I’m sure you are the star you wanted to be! Kathy was born in Auburn on June 7,1951 to the late Kathleen and Paul Bishop Sr.
She worked many years as a Home Health Aide in the Syracuse area. She graduated from West High School in Auburn and she was an active member and was blessed with many friends from the Brown Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Don Stoughtenger and her two daughters, Karen Vogelsang and Kimberley Seeber.
She is survived by her son, Brian Vogelsang, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Seven sisters Mary Breeze, Betsy Pash, Laura Delaney, Kelly Wejko, Martha, Maggie and Anne Bishop and two brothers Peter Bishop and Paul E Bishop Jr. She is also survived by many close friends.
Kathy was a registered organ donor and will hopefully help others with her gift.
A Celebration of Kathy’s life will take place at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church (228 Davis Street, Syracuse, NY) on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM.

Rev. Wilbur James Votraw - March 29, 1929 - November 14, 2023

Obituary Preview: Rev. Wilbur J. Votraw, 94 of Syracuse died on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Native and life resident of Syracuse, Father was born on March 29, 1929, to the late Wilbur and Emma Votraw.
Graduate of St. Anthony of Padua, Class of 1947, Father attended Lemoyne College for two years then entered St. Bernard’s Seminary. He graduated with a BA and a Master of Divinity in both Philosophy and Theology.
Father Votraw was ordained on February 2, 1955, by the late Bishop Walter Foery in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Father held many positions in his lifetime including being Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Whitney Point from 1970 to 1974; St. Andrew’s in Binghamton from 1974- to 1985. In 1985, Father returned to Syracuse and resided at St. Vincent de Paul and in the late 1980’s, he became Chaplain at Crouse Hospital and later became the Director of Pastoral Care until 1993.
In 1993, Father took a Sabbatical year and studied scripture at Washington Theological Union in Silver Springs, MD. In the Fall of 1994, Father returned to Syracuse and became the Chaplain at Loretto Geriatric Center for six years. In 2000, he officially “retired” and lived in residence at St. Vincent de Paul Church assisting the church when he was called upon. In 2005, Father became the Administrator of St. Vincent’s and he remained there until his second retirement.
Member of the Canon Law Society and an Associate member of the Catholic Biblical Association.
Father was very active in the Marriage Tribunal of the Syracuse Diocese and as an Associate Judge of the Inter-Diocesan Tribunal of the State of New York. He also taught for a number of years in the Syracuse Diocesan Deaconate Program.
Father Votraw loved to travel, loved all religions, fine dining, exotic foods, swimming, spending time at “The River” with family, exploring the Adirondacks, chocolate and Bloody Mary’s.
Survived by three nieces: Dr. Mary (Dr. Richard Barth) Delaney of Bethesda, MD, Susan DeLaney of Syracuse and Anne (David) Morton of Mt. Airy, MD.
Several grand nieces and nephews.
Father donated his body to SUNY Upstate Medical University Anatomical Donation Program.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 342 Vine Street, Syracuse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 14, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church with the Most Rev. Bishop Douglas Lucia presiding.
The Rite of Committal and burial will be immediately following in St. Mary's Cemetery (Randall Road entrance) in Dewitt.

Frank was born in Syracuse, New York and lived most of his adult life in Liverpool, New York. He proudly served as a Veteran in the US Navy.
He was a member of the Bricklayers Union, Local 519 where he worked as a Cement Finisher for many years.
Frank enjoyed his horses and had a love for animals and gardening. He loved being outdoors surrounded by nature and had a love for drawing cartoon characters. He cherished his “Precious Moments” figurine collection.

Obituary Preview: Sister M. Ferdinand (Jane) Hudak embraced Sister Death on September 28, 2023 at the Franciscan Villa. She was 93 years of age and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 64 years.
Jane was born in Binghamton, NY, to Martin E. and Helen Frances (Lubelec) Hudak. After graduating from Johnson City High School, she worked in secretarial positions for Ansco, General Electric and IBM. During these years, she was a top amateur athlete – she played 3rd base for the state champion Triple Cities All Star Team, was a top scorer on her company basketball teams, was one of the top bowlers in the region and golfed in tournaments, twice winning first place. During these years Jane enjoyed a happy active life, but always felt something was missing. After becoming acquainted with the Sisters of St. Francis, she was drawn to religious life and entered in 1959 and received the name of Sister Mary Ferdinand.
Sister’s ministry first found her doing secretarial work at Mercy Hospital in Auburn, NY, and then teaching at Chadwick’s Catechetical Center. Her years of community service included Registrar at Maria Regina College, secretary to Mother Viola Kiernan, OSF, Registrar and Secretary for Pen & Pages Tutorial Center, Secretary and enthusiastic Fundraiser in the Community Development Office, Escort/Driver for sisters at Jolenta Covent, and Prayer Minister at the Franciscan Villa.
Sister was a devoted, loving servant of God and the people of God. She possessed an outgoing personality, a great sense of humor and a passionate love of sports.
Sister is predeceased by her parents, twin brother James, brother Martin; two sisters, Helen Kinney and Dolores Mastronardi. She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis and her nieces Louise (Scott) Avery, Cindy (Dennis) Burris, Joan (Mike) Freeman, Linda (Ryan) Klunk, Julie (Jim) Steed, Elizabeth (Mark) Swenson, one nephew Thomas (Olga) Kinney and many great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Franciscan Villa Chapel, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, NY 13212. Calling hours will be from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM in the Chapel. Masks will be required. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
