Michael John Doerr - September 17, 1935 - February 16, 2021

Departed: 02/16/2021 (St. Johns)
Obituary Preview: Michael J. Doerr, and though he left this world on Tuesday, February 16, he left plenty of tall tales, laughter and vivid memories in his wake. It's safe to say the Fat Tuesday celebration in the sky was a lively and well-attended reunion of relatives -- Mike being the center of attention, of course. Mike was born to Frank and Kathryn (Stadtfeld) Doerr at Mecosta, MI on September 17, 1935. He attended St. Michael’s Parochial and Remus consol. Dated schools, graduating in 1953. He was an Air Force veteran as a C-130 mechanic. He loved his country. Mike was proud of many things in his life, but working for Oldsmobile for 37 years, 29 as a millwright, was right near the top of the list. He was a Michigan man. Michigan men made cars for the nation. The large ruby Auto Workers of America ring was always on his finger. That, along with a wall clock from General Motors, were his prized possessions. Plant 3 and 5 in Lansing was his home away from home.
Mike loved to hunt spending many of his hunting trips in Wyoming as well as up in the Blanchard/Remus area with family and friends. He loved his sports - playing and coaching softball and bowling but generally, he was likely watching his beloved Michigan State Spartans on the hardwood or gridiron. Tigers baseball wasn't just background noise in the summer for Mike. Somehow, someway, he was invested to the end. Then there was "Barbie," Mike's beloved wife of 60 years. They celebrated that milestone on New Year's Eve, 2020. What began as a young military man and his beautiful bride, produced all of that love. Mike would often wander into Horrocks Farmers Market in Lansing, holding Barbara's hand. Barbie wanted to smell the spring flowers. Their unfiltered devotion to each other set the tone and example for generations. What would this world remember most about Mike? Well, that answer is about as simple as the man himself. Family. That came first. His many friendships, some lasting decades. Mike loved his riddles and one-liners. He was always "Gooder than hell" when you asked. He had nicknames for everyone, especially those grandkids. They were often on the wrong end of his intense six-handed -- not four -- Euchre games, too. You likely weren't beating him in cribbage either.
Along with that grin always came the twinkle in his eye. He wasn't simply telling you a story, he wanted you to live it with him. He loved his crossword puzzles in the morning paper and he was never too far away from his trusty drinking cup. If he wasn't swigging on it, one of the kids surely was.
When you ask Mike's family, they all refer to him as the "glue." The glue that held his very large family together. The glue that made family reunions a priority - his much-anticipated Doerr Reunion, which would reach into the hundreds of people.
Keeping his legacy alive is now his ultimate goal. Mike wouldn't have wanted a normal obituary. His life -- and larger-than-life personality was much more impactful than lines of names and a funeral date. We will always remember that smile, the stories and the unwavering love he gave. Whether you were a neighbor, a stranger, or Tom Izzo calling to wish you a happy birthday, everyone was family to Mike. Michael J. Doerr is survived by his loving wife Barbara Ann (Newhall). He is also survived by his children: Vincent (Vicki) Doerr of Casper, WY, Michele (Warren) Tack of St. Johns, MI., Susan (Tim) Brawner of St. Johns, MI, Laura (Alan) Post of Bannister, MI, Frank Doerr of St. Johns, MI, and Dianne Doerr of Ovid, MI. Thirteen grandchildren: Michael, Carmen, Anthony, Jessica, Emilee, Jamie, Joel, Jayson, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Michaela, Jordan and Jaxson, and 11 great-grandchildren and one due in July. Visitation will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home (Keck-Coleman Chapel), 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns, on Thursday, February 25, from 3-8PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7PM. *(For those friends attending the visitation, please call the funeral home at 989-224-4422 to schedule an hour between 3 & 8 to attend) Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden St., St. Johns, on Friday, February 26, at 11AM with the Rev. Gary VanOrsdol - December 27, 1935 - January 07, 2021

Departed: 01/07/2021 (St. Johns)
Obituary Preview: Gary Alan VanOrsdol, age 85, of St. Johns MI, passed away on Jan. 07, 2021 after living life to its fullest while battling Parkinson’s Disease for many years. Gary called his wife and two sons to his side on Dec. 16th, after two recent trips to Sparrow hospital, letting them know he was at peace with God his savior and his time here on earth. His determination and love for his family remained strong to his last day.
Surviving Gary are Diana (Green), his wife of 63 years, sons Harley (Cyndy) VanOrsdol, Rodney (Julie) VanOrsdol along with six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and five great- great- grandchildren. There are three brother in laws – Lyle Brewer, Bruce (Ruth) Field, Jerry (Sandy) Green, and two sister in laws – Linda (Tim) Crowell, Ramona (Scott) Smith, and their families. Gary also has many cousins from the Vaniman family.
Gary was born in Owosso on Dec. 27, 1935 to Amos Harley VanOrsdol and Laura Elnore (Vaniman) VanOrsdol of Ovid who proceeded him in death. He had one sister, Jill (Lyle) Brewer who also proceeded him in death. He graduated from Ovid High School and attended General Motors Institute. Gary and Diana started their family in Ovid, MI. They moved to St. Johns in 1965 and lived in the basement for several years while Gary finished building the home he designed. Gary worked for Oldsmobile from 1953 until his retirement in 1991. He began his career in Tool Design, with promotions to Manufacturing Engineer, Supervisor of Tool Design, Manager of Manufacturing Engineering and Master Mechanic. Gary was very analytical and meticulous. He was a man of strong commitment and dedication, constantly offering his help to family and friends.
In 1970 Gary and Diana purchased the first of two vacation homes on Higgins Lake which have been a source of many fond memories for his entire family. The boys frequently took friends with them to the lake where they would begin a Saturday morning by waking up their Dad at 7:00 am so he would drive the ski boat until all the boys had taken at least two turns water skiing. Occasionally he might take a turn on the skies himself before everyone headed to the house where Diana had a big breakfast ready for them. Chores followed breakfast and came before the next round of fun and games. Gary enjoyed Jarts, badminton or tether ball with the boys or taking several of them out on his Super Porpoise sailboat. The family continues to enjoy “the lake” and build memories to this day. This is one on many countless examples of Gary and Diana’s commitment to raising their boys to appreciate hard work, it’s rewards, family and friends.
Diana and Gary made many trips to their winter home on Anna Maria Island in FL for several years after his retirement. This allowed them time to be close to Rod and his family as their granddaughters, Mikayla and Rylie, grew up. The multiple driving trips to Florida each year gave them a chance to explore alternate routes and destinations. Gary and Diana also enjoyed fall color tours and visiting lighthouses each year for their anniversary. All family members will tell you that holidays and family get togethers (in St Johns or at “the lake”) with Grandma and Grandpa have always been something special.
The family will receive family and friends at McGeehan Funeral Homes (Keck-Coleman Chapel), 1500 Waterford Pkwy, St. Johns on Friday, Jan. 15 from 2:00 – 8:00pm. The family requests everyone follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks during visitation and services.
The family will receive family and friends at McGeehan Funeral Homes (Keck-Coleman Chapel), 1500 Waterford Pkwy, St. Johns on Friday, Jan. 15 from 2:00 – 8:00pm.  The family will gather for a private Funeral Service on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1:00 pm with a graveside service to follow at South Ovid Cemetery. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share details about their life, and offer a sense of closure.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, personality, and accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. They may require specific information and formatting guidelines.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can ensure that your life story is told in your own words and can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the person's life or death, it's essential to approach the topic with tact and respect. Consider consulting with family members or a professional writer for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms can publish immediately, while newspapers may have a delay of several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. It's essential to proofread carefully before submission to ensure accuracy and avoid errors.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?
