Edith C. Keller - January 13, 1952 - August 12, 2018

Departed: 08/12/2018 (Easton)
Obituary Preview: EASTON----Edith Keller passed away peacefully at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton on August 12th. Mrs. Keller was born in 1952 in Concord to the late Admiral Irving H. and Mrs. Anne O. Chase. She grew up in the idyllic countryside of Concord's Fairhaven Hill. She graduated in 1970 from Concord Academy where she headed The Madrigals singing group and studied piano and harpsichord with Sandra Rosenblum. She has kept a number of friendships all her life from that school and from Concord. She earned a degree at Sarah Lawrence College in Piano Performance and spent time in Paris studying classical piano with the famous Nadia Boulanger.
Tragically, while in Paris the first symptoms of Bipolar Disorder set in. It would not stop her from the work of helping others and founded the Harbor Area Community Residences program in the early 1970's. This was a program for Developmentally Delayed and Mentally Retarded Adults.
She went on the study at UMass Amherst and became a devoted believer in the Baha'i Faith. She remained active in this religious community up until her death. She promoted interfaith and inter-racial unity and women's rights through her participation in Baha'i activities. Social activism was in her blood - no wonder, since she was a descendant of Lucretia Mott a well known worker in the Abolitionist and Women's Suffrage Movement in the 1800's. Lucretia and her sister, Edith's great great great grandmother, Martha Coffin Wright, were organizers of the first Women's Rights Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 with Katie Stanton. Martha's home served as part of the Underground Railroad for fleeing slaves, and her daughter Eliza Wright Osborne oversaw the finances of Harriet Tubman. Martha's sister Ellen married the son of the famous abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison. In the early 1900's Edith's great grandfather, Thomas Mott Osborne, was a prison reformer, going undercover as a prisoner at Auburn (New York) prison and serving also as the warden of Sing-Sing. He wrote the book "Within These Walls" in 1914 making him "the most prominent prison reform crusader of his day" according to the website from her family's Osborne Center for Social Justice in New York. Today the Osborne Association, founded in memory of Thomas and headquartered in New York, is a leader in the field, continuing his pioneering work in prison reform.
On 3/17/84 Edith married the love of her life, Robert Keller. They lived for many years in Easton. Multiple medical issues plagued Edith over the past 5 years especially, but Rob lovingly cared for her. When she moved to Braemoor Nursing Home she said on multiple occasions that "Rob's daily visits keep me going". Despite all of Edith's suffering, her mind remained on others and she was always attentive to other's needs and sufferings. She connected her family and mended its divisions when she found them.
She leaves behind her loving husband Robert, her brothers Col.Jonathan Chase of Carlisle, Kentucky, Warren Chase of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, sisters Helen Trainor of Boynton Beach, Florida, Mary Nicholson of Oxford, MA, and Lucy Osborne of Hull, MA, a nephew and five nieces. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 19th at 10 am in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA coordinated by Kane Funeral Home of Easton, MA. August 19, 2018 10:00 AM Sleepy Hollow Cemetery 34 Bedford Street Concord, MA 01742
