Katherine C. Jensen - May 31, 1986 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (LEBANON)
Obituary Preview: Katherine Caroline “KC” Jensen experienced a beautiful and peaceful death among loved ones on April 15, 2024, at age 37. Her death took place on a sunny Spring day exactly one week after a total solar eclipse captivated the nation, and one week before Earth Day.
Loved ones who passed before KC include her namesake Aunt Katherine Lalor, maternal grandparents Captain Harold E. and Sherry Weaver, paternal grandparents Robert and Doris Jensen, her heart-horse Mozart, and many beloved dogs including Annie, Celia, Zhao, and Luna.
KC was born in Maryville, IL on May 31, 1986. She is survived by her parents, Susan Jensen and Keith Jensen (Janis); uncle Mark Weaver (Roxanne); siblings Christopher Jensen, Melissa Jensen (Sarah), and Justin Brase (Jen); niblings Connor, Cami and Avery; rescued quarter horse, Dragon; and a Borzoi named Carson. Her family meant the world to her.
Most people have a few close friends and a lot of acquaintances; KC had few acquaintances and a lot of close friends. KC understood that relationships are what matter most, and she created community wherever she went. To know KC was to experience love, loyalty, authenticity, and a rare and refreshing candor. She truly wanted the best for the animals she cared for and the people cared about. She had a knack for helping people excavate the very best versions of themselves. During life’s hardest moments, she showed up: with meals, thoughtful gifts, quality time, endless patience, and by creating a safe space for authentic expression, vulnerability, and growth.
In addition to a boundless love for animals large and small, KC enjoyed long hikes, cooking and enjoying quality food, poetry by Mary Oliver and Andrea Gibson, tea parties in the middle of the forest, porch talks, fantasy fiction, geology, epic road trips, apple picking, live music, motorcycle trips with her Dad, cross country road trips with her sister and friends, and traveling to other countries such as Australia, Thailand, India, Italy, Spain, and Canada. She believed in care-focused feminism and social and environmental justice. She was quietly confident and openly compassionate, incredibly curious, emotionally wise and introspective but also delightfully silly, and she possessed a fierce determination to live each day to the fullest.
KC's career was marked by many inspirational milestones. She joined Miami University’s Naval ROTC program in August 2004. After graduation she commissioned as a naval officer in 2008 and was selected to begin training in naval aviation. Upon earning her wings of gold as a Naval Aviator she was selected to fly the Navy’s P-3C Orion aircraft. During her career she flew missions worldwide and returned to the cradle of naval aviation to serve as a flight instructor, training the Navy’s next generation of naval aviators. She served honorably in the United States Navy for ten years, receiving multiple awards and earning the rank of Lieutenant. While assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy, KC found alignment between her passionate advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and naval service as the Brigade’s Command Management Equal Opportunity Officer. In that role, she served as an advocate and resource for over 4,000 future naval officers and their chains of command. Her dedication provided individualized support to ensure all midshipmen were treated with dignity and respect and had the ability to work and live in an environment free of harassment and discrimination. She spoke often and proudly of her Navy friends and mentors, many of whom she stayed in close contact with.
After her military service, KC completed a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kentucky in May 2019 and soon began work toward a Ph.D. While in Kentucky, she worked in Equine Assisted Therapy, using horses to reframe human relationships and heal trauma, a testament to her belief in the transformative power of connection. It was during this time that metastatic breast cancer upended her plans and her future. Somehow, even in hardship, KC's light could not be extinguished - she showed up for friends and family with the same generosity and compassion she had always embodied.
KC’s legacy will live on in her advocacy work for people living with cancer, through a scholarship being established in her name by her colleagues in the University of Kentucky’s Counseling Psychology program, as a cornea tissue donor, and in the naming of Ayla Katherine, the beloved child of two of KC’s dearest friends.
It has been said that KC’s superpower was finding good people, but the truth is more exquisite: she was a star whose light attracted beauty and goodness, and she nurtured those in her orbit with intention. May we all strive to live as fully as KC, spreading kindness and seeking the magic in every connection. Celebration of Life: Crystal Garden Banquet & Event Center, 1230 University Drive, Edwardsville, IL 62025 Saturday, May 4, 2024, 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. (service starts at 2:00 p.m.) Tea and coffee will be served immediately following the service

Leslie O'Connor - October 26, 1957 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (LEBANON)
Obituary Preview: A Radiant Spirit's Final Curtain Call
The world has grown a little dimmer with the passing of Leslie (Levy) O'Connor on March 10th, 2024 at her home in Collinsville, Illinois. Leslie departed this earth surrounded by the endless love of her beloved children at her bedside. She was 66 years old.
Born on October 26th, 1957 in Danville, Illinois, Leslie was the cherished only child of Paul and Joan (Ellsberry) Levy. She spent her childhood roaming the open fields and tending to the baby lambs on her mother's family farm - a working crop farm that remains a treasured legacy today. Her father, a renowned retailer, owned the iconic Deutsch Uptown store on Vermilion Street, transforming it into the premier destination for women's haute couture and designer fashions. After his untimely passing in 1974, Leslie's mother Joan took the reins, wisely employing her daughter as the store's bookkeeper, foreshadowing Leslie's future in the family business.
However, it was the stage that first captured Leslie's vibrant spirit. At Danville High School, she landed the leading role of the sultry yet strong-willed "Hot Lips Houlihan" in the school's production of MASH, garnering resounding acclaim for her performance. This spark was fanned into a roaring blaze at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia, where Leslie's tour-de-force portrayal of Annie Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker" was hailed as outstanding.
In April 1985, Leslie said "I do" to her beloved James Michael O'Connor. Though their journey briefly took them to Denver, Colorado, the couple returned to Leslie's roots in 1987 to welcome their son, Paul Maxwell "Max" O'Connor. Soon after, they planted new roots in Collinsville, Illinois, expanding their family with the arrival of daughter Gail Elizabeth "Betsy" O'Connor in 1989.
Leslie's loving light will forevermore shine in the hearts of her husband Mike O'Connor; children Max (Christina) O'Connor and Betsy (Brett Rowland); grandchildren Brian and Joan O'Connor; and the countless lifelong friends who bore witness to her warmth, wit, and zest for life.
A Celebration of Leslie's Life will be held on March 16th, 2024 at 12pm at Turtle Run Golf Club, 332 E. Liberty Lane, Danville, IL., where the echoes of her laughter and memories of her generous spirit will undoubtedly linger in the air. Though she has departed the stage, the show of her remarkable life will forever run in the minds of all who were fortunate enough to bask in her radiance.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Metro East Humane Society.
